Hi guys! We are looking to upgrade our current instance of DPM to the latest version of 2016. We will also be upgrading the OS. Just wondered if anyone out there has performed this upgrade yet, how did it go, what sort of issues did you come across. More importantly we are looking at the way that the new version of DPM handles storage. From what ive read you can create volumes now. Ive found information on creating new protection groups but how does it handle the exisiting replicas on disk that are using the older file system Vicky IT Technician Hatton academies trust

Exactly that. Currently Office 2013 site wide. Is it worth the upgrade to go to Office 2016 yet? I've installed it on my laptop and can't see many differences. Done a bit of research on it and again can't really spot any amazing must have features in it? Any opinions on it? I do however like to have the new shiny stuff!!!! thankyou!

Hi, Been asked to spec a server for a average sized primary school. How would you spec this server? Processor? Ram? Don't want to go majorly overkill but do want enough power and 'futureproof' in the box for it to last. Are you able to recommend a server? Preferably a tower server due to the location! Many thanks

I'm looking at installing a 2016 DC in our network but when checking that everything is running smoothly before proceeding I'm seeing lots of schannel 36886 warnings on the current DC's (2012r2). We don't have an enterprise CA, can I ignore them or do I need to investigate further and what would be the best way to do this.

Hi, Our fleet of 60 Fujitsu LifeBook Laptops used for pupils are around 6 years old and keyboards are failing left, right and centre. We recently upgraded the Server and upgraded everything to Windows 10 and since then moved to Teams for remote learning. The Laptops just aren't up to it anymore. I have asked out offsite IT support to stop Teams loading at startup as it's easier and quicker to use the Web version. I have spoken to the SLT on a a number of occasions suggesting that they need to start planning for a replacement but unless I start this off it is not going to happen. The SLT have suggested that we will continue to use MS Teams, but a number of year groups have migrated back to Smart Notebook and storing files on the Server!! I am now looking for upgrade ideas, the HT has and I am sure will mention ChromeBooks again and I will have to explain why this would mean a complete change in the way we currently operate and to do this properly would need a complete business review which no one would do. So what would be a cost effective upgrade to retain a Windows 10 Server / Client setup? Open to any other suggestions?

Yes, I have a (windows 10 education) 1809 rollout image with everything acceptable. I'd noticed a few odd desktops in the last few days and have discovered PCs running 1903. What?

Hello all, We have just purchased a license for Net2 Pro and plan to update our v5 lite installation to v6 pro. Has anyone updated lite to pro on here? Is is a simple over the top / in place upgrade, or is it likely to nuke the v5 lite installation?

Have 5 Lenovo touch screen laptops which were bought by a school (I didn't advise on this purchase) that have Windows 8.1 standard installed. I asked out admin dept to get a quote to upgrade to 8.1 Pro and was told today it can't be done and that the school would have to buy a full licence with educational discount for £113. I can't see this is correct and wondered if anyone else has come across this and if anyone has any advise as to where the school could go out and buy an upgrade license at a more respectable price. Also, as a slide twist on this I'd like to start with a fresh install of Pro using the upgrade licence - so run the disk, choose to carry over any data and let it go for it... I'm guessing there would be no issues with using the upgrade key to do this (although ultimately I'd have a play anyway and image back if all goes horribly wrong!) Thanks as always...

I currently have exchange 2007 and o365 setup. I found out that enabling email for the pupils in o365 is a disaster as it crashes without the mailbox first being migrated. I was thinking of upgrading my local exchange2007 to 2010 and enabling hybrid. Will this allow pupils to access their email through o365 without me having to migrate the mailbox immediately? Is it hard to do this retrospectively? Will I still have to setup a real (not self signed cert) for the OWA?

Hello. I upgraded from an older version of Notebook 10 to: Software version 10.0.392.6 Driver version 10.0.392.6 Notebook version 10.0.596.3 After doing this an anoying "Digital ink Layer" is activated as soon as I lift a pen, and I'm no longer able to use my fingers as a mouse or do a left-click (if I click the right-click button on the board I'm able to right-click). How do I disable this, so I can go back to the SMARTboard we're used to?

Good morning everyone, I'm new on this forum, I've already looked for the information of this post, please if there is any other post similar to this point it to me. I work on a private school in Uruguay, we have PREP, Form and Higher education, with local and IB diploma. Currently we have a large MIS system developped inside the school since about 2006 with lots of the main functionality of the big MIS systems. We are having problems on the maintenance, all our time is spent on correcting errors, and the implementation of new functionality also takes too long time, tipical problems of a bad maintenance of the system and poor development. I started to work here from about 6 months ago. Also we have a complete Administration program, fully integrated with the academic program developped in house, which is very old too and users are demanding reports and functionalities very hard to do (and in some cases imposible, like a cashflow) on this system. This is why we began the process of acquiring a new MIS system. By now I found three big candidates: SIMS, Bromcom, Aspen. The question is to have some references/experiences/recomendations of those of you that already past this process. Would like to share some questions/comments on this process. I used to work on a pharmaceutical company with a large world class ERP system on different countries and sites, so I'm very familiar with large systems and their implementation. Also if any of you can point to documents or web pages with analysis on this it would be really appreciated. Please let me know if some of you would like to spend some time on this or if I can post some questions here. Many thanks.

Hi, I'm sure this is a simple question: I am trying to complete my first Moodle Upgrade (i know, i'm a late starter) and im only going from 2.7.? to 2.7.?+ but when i backup the /var/ww/html/moodle folder and the extract the new .taz.gz to be the new /var/www/html/moodle folder and then copy my config.php back in - i get just a white webpage and no site at all. If i dont copy my old config.php back in the site works, starts asking setup questions, but i am worried that this will be a new install and not use my existing db/content/settings. Please can someone point me in the right direction here? I am using moodle 2.7/ubuntu14/command line only. If anyone has an upgrade guide they swear by, please share, i would be interested to take a look.

Hi all. Just thought I'd throw this out there for your opinions. Have inherited an aging network as part of a new systems manager job. Girls school, 800 students, 100 or so staff, 300 workstations. 10 existing servers, all but 1 is over 8 years old, as follows: 1. PDC. 8 Year old Dell Poweredge. AD, DHCP, DNS and currently hosting Musac SMS data 2. FILE SERVER. 9 year old Proliant P3 3. ITM 8 Year old Dell Poweredge, hosting eTrust and Sibelius S/W 4. PRINT 9 year old Dell Poweredge. Printer, PapertCut NG and superVisor.net\ 5. MONITOR. PC Box, running management software for swipe card print boxes 6. BACKUP. 8 Year old Proliant P3. Failed Exabyte Tape system 7. DCBACKUP. PC Box, P3, 512mb. Backup Domain Controller 8. WEB Proliant DL140. 3 Years old. Intranet and Moodle server 9. WEB TEST Dell PowerEdge 10 Years old. Internal student websites 10. TECH. Proilant ML350, 6 Years old. Tech (installers, WSUS etc.) Gigabit from servers to main switching, 100Mb copper within buildings, 100Mb Fibre between buildings. Variety of 100Mb Switches around school. Fairly typical Replacement plan is: 1. New 'Systems' server to host Antivirus, Print and Monitor, Ghost and backup with new LTO4 backup drive. Virtual servers for AV, Print and Monitor. Retire existing ITM, PRINT, MONITOR, BACKUP and TECH Servers 2. New server for Domain Controller. Retire existing PDC 3. New 'Apps' server to host SMS and any other network based apps 4. New File server or SAN/NAS for file storage. Retire existing FILE SERVER 5. Keep existing web server, migrate test web server to virtual server on this box Hope this makes sense. Basically I want to consolidate the important, but non critical roles (AV, PRINT, GHOST, BACKUP etc.) onto one box, put a new PDC in, move file storage to 1 box and continue to use existing Web Server. Any thoughts on this? I can provide more info if necessary

Recently we upgraded SCCM from SQL 2012 to SQL 2017. Ever since we have found that the Software Update Point Synchronization is now taking 1 hour 45 minutes to sync in the console from Microsoft Update and then show as completed, in the WSUS console though it is showing as finished in minutes. Has anyone seen this before? Thanks

Hey all, Long time reader, first time poster, please go easy... I've worked at my current school as one of 3 Techs for around 3 years now. We're making the move to Windows 10 on our Student network (we have two domains) and It's a massive job, but we're planning and planning and planning. Server Upgrade and Migration, 400 Workstation Redeployment to Win 10, GPO Reconfiguration etc all over the first week of the summer holidays. One thing we're stuck on is a new network management solution. Currently we use the vastly outdated but still super great Ranger Remote Control and LANRanger. Unfortunately they aren't compatible with Windows Server 2016 & Windows 10 1803 (and for some reason RRC stops our AV from updating its definition) so we need to move onto something else. I've been looking at all sorts of solutions, me and one other Tech went to BETT where we saw a great bunch, however it was all quite sales-y and we didn't get the most in-depth look at them. We've made a list of crucial and good-to-have points of what our current system gives us and I just can't find any one (or two) softwares that include it all. The exception is Impero, however we're a fairly rural public school and as such budget is tight... So far I've looked into Impero, NetSupport, Senso, ABTutor, GoverLAN, and LANSchool. Here's what we're looking for in our network management - - Remote Control + Workstation sorted into 'Room' categories - Control of room by room of Workstations - Disable Internet access per workstation on the fly - Teacher Access (Cross Domain or Internet Browser UI) - Restrict Maximum Logons Per User - Title Checks (Auto-Close window based on partial/full title match from list of words) - Run software/apps/scripts en masse per room on the fly - Scheduled Workstation Power Off - Workstation activity Logs (event logs) We use PDQ Deploy and Inventory so that covers a lot of deployment and Wake on LAN etc. We have a few iPads so it'd be a plus If it was cross OS, but not essential... Some Storage Quota control would be nice but push comes to shove we can control that through Windows Server. We're using GPO to lock down a lot of things, so really it's that list above that we just need to be able to manage... Sorry to pour all this on, there are just too many options and none of them seem to do everything we need! Will

This is an FYI to Promethean and a warning to others. I deployed version 1.6.5 last week over 1.6.43. Group policy did not automatically place 1.6.43 in the "Packages that this package will upgrade" section of the deployment's properties. As a result, 1.6.5 installed over 1.6.43 rather than it uninstalling it beforehand. The desktop shortcuts on teachers' computers were left pointing to 1.6.43 which attempted an MSI repair but this halted with a warning about a newer version being installed. Similarly for file associations, flip-charts were associated with 1.6.43 and a repair was attempted when trying to open them. ActivInspire could not be opened by any teachers in the school. The quick fix is to deploy a simple shortcut to the ActivInspire executable and have teachers use this instead of the 1.6.43 Windows Installer shortcut still on their desktops. The full fix is to uninstall 1.6.5, then uninstall 1.6.43, then install 1.6.5 again. (start - run - msiexec /uninstall \\path\to\ActivInspire.msi) For others to avoid this happening, after adding the MSI to your group policy object, choose Advanced rather than Assign (or go into properties after) and under the Upgrades tab, manually add any previous versions of ActivInspire (from that or other group policy objects). To Promethean, I think it's just a matter of adding a GUID into the Upgrade table of the MSI. I don't really know enough to point out exactly, but Group Policy should know what MSIs to upgrade. In this case, it did mark 1.4 for upgrading, so maybe it's something to do with point releases vs. build. This happened before with a previous version of ActivInspire but has never occurred with anything else I've deployed with Group Policy, so please look into it!
