Hello, We've had a new batch of Lenovo laptops this year with a different network card to previous models. If I try and PXE boot the laptop, using the current WIM file, it errors with an error message saying no driver present. I have tracked down the right driver and I have imported this into MDT (I know it's the right one as I can PXE Boot fine if I specify the drivers on an attached USB stick), and I have Updated the deployment share, with and without rebuilding boot images. The problem I’m having is that even after updating the share, the existing WIM still complains about the driver (I’m assuming this is expected behaviour.) But when I try and PXE off of the new LiteTouch WIM file, which I have imported into WDS, Windows starts to load and then instantly crashes (BSOD) with an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL error message. Has anybody come across this before? I’m still fairly new to MDT as this is the first year we've made changes to it since it was installed last summer as part of BSF. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Hi, We use the YHGFL SMS vpn solution in our schools but I am unable to address the server by host name in a couple of our schools running Server 2012 R2 environments. Connection to vpn is successful but when trying to access drives mapped by \\hostname\Share fails with the following error. "The system detected a possible attempt to compromise security. Please ensure that you can contact the server that authenticated you"- I can access without issue by IP address only but I do not wish to use ip mappings in these schools A bit about the environment - single server 2012R2 DFL and FFL. Clients running Windows 7 with a host file entry for the server - server runs infrastructure services, ADDS, dhcp, dns, file and print etc. I stumbled across an article that suggested opening port 88 (udp & tcp) on the server firewall - this has been done - I also noticed that group policy updates etc fail due to lack of connectivity to the server and that the vpn adaptor uses an ip on a 24 bit subnet where as the schools are on 21bit. I digress, posting this in hopes that someone has seen and fixed this problem or one of the tech bod's at Y & H have the answer? Thanks in advance, Chris (MINT)

I just wondered if anyone has set-up Windows Server Update Services on server 2012? If so, is there anything specific to look out for compared with older server operating systems? I've read this article and wondered if the the steps are the same as it doesn't mention Server 2012 under the 'applies to:'. Windows Server Update Services 3.0 SP2 Step By Step Guide I've not set this up before so I am reluctant to go ahead before doing a little bit of research. Any help or advice would be appreciated. Wasn't sure where to post this, hope this will suffice -- sorry if the wording is simple, I've never done anything like this before. I've set up a WordPress server with Microsoft WebMatrix on a VM running Server 2012. I have it working on our network (via http://servername/ to the point that I'm ready to open it for public viewing. I've been given an external IP address which points to the internal IP address of the server. Our domain is registered with 123-reg, so I've added in a type A DNS entry for "blog" (for blog.ourdomain.org) pointing to the external address. I assume I need to change the URL the WordPress installation recognises itself as being at, however currently there's not even a response to a ping of the external IP address, and visiting blog.ourdomain.org directs to 123-reg.co.uk -- Am I missing a step? (Pinging blog.ourdomain.org attempts to ping the correct IP address, so presumably the DNS entry is working). Help would be hugely appreciated.

hello everyone, Here is a quick look at what I currently have. We have ConfigManager 2012 sp1 running on a vm which is 2008r2. Up to now, we had just been playing with the system, trying to get familiarized with it. It IS added to the domain and i guess, somewhat integrated already. Now, my question is, if I wanted to put it onto a Server2012 vm instead, what would i really need to do to migrate over? Would a fresh start be best? And would uninstalling it from the old box cause issues inside of my network? Like AD issues.. I look forward to any insight you may have. thanks guys!

I'm working on organizing my companies folder permissions. We have a set of folders that we create for each of our Products, that has 5 sub folders under it. Something like the following below. I am looking for a script I can run to apply group permissions to each folder. Each subfolder has its own set of user groups and permissions. Does anyone know of such a script that is easily modified to match my groups and folder structure. Products Folder ----Folder 1 ----Folder 2 ----Folder 3 ----Folder 4 Thanks for your help. Fred

Hi there, I just wanted to get other peoples thoughts on the best way to implement a file server solution that allows HA. Currently we have a Dell Equallogic SAN which we will be using for storage and what I was thinking was to use Server 2012 as a means of presenting that storage to the users on the network. The 2 ways I see that I could possibly do this is to either make 2 X virtual 2012 servers in a cluster which will then connect via iSCSI to the SAN. Then use Classic File share with continuous availability. However all of my client pc's that will be connecting to this share are Windows 7 for the foreseeable future and from what I read if a client was performing a large file transfer when one of the nodes goes down then they get an error about the location no longer existing. While this is not likely to happen every day (the large transfers I mean) it does occasionally happen between certain departments. Or my other thought on this to have those server 2012's running with Network load balance IP between them with an appropriate record pointing to said IP that would be the new file server name that we use. But I am not sure if this may cause conflicts with both servers being connected to the SAN and if say one user was load balanced to one server and accessed the same data that another user would be using while connected through the other server. Any advice that you could offer regarding this would be appreciated.

Hi, Was running DirSync to sync my AD with Microsoft cloud. The process has wrecked my primary DC. (I do have a secondary DC operating OK although is not FSMO) I have no NETLOGON or SYSVOL shares on the primary DC. I can't browse the network - only using IP addresses although DNS looks fine. Whenever I try to open any AD console e.g. 'AD Users and Computers' I get the error 'Naming information cannot be located because: The directory or file cannot be created. Contact your system admin to verify that your domain is properly configured and online' DcDiag gives me ...(file attached) dcdiag output.txt Properly stumped.... any help out there please !!!! Thinking of promoting the second DC to FSMO, reinstalling the primary then promote primary back to FSMO. Machine is a VM and I don't have a recent enough snapshot to avoid re-doing a lot of work Properly stumped.... any help out there please !!!! Cheers in advance

Hi, I've taken over from a technician who used to store pupil desktops locally on each machine. I want to redirect student desktops to one location. I've applied the redirection which appears to be working as I can see a test redirect folder on student desktops. The problem I have, however, is that old desktop items that are stored locally are also showing on the desktop, despite the redirect in place. I would expect only the test redirect folder to be shown, and not a mix of server side and local items. The settings are as follows: Basic - redirect everyone's folder to the same location Target - redirect to the following location Root path: \\server\PupilDesktop Setting tab: I've only ticked: Also apply redirection policy to windows 2000.... Policy Removal: Leave the folder in the new location when policy is removed. How can I remove the desktop items stored locally so that the desktop only looks to the redirected folder. We run server 2012 and windows 7 clients. Any advice would be welcome.

Hi everyone, I'm running into a weird NTFS/group permissions issue that I just can't wrap my head around at all. I'm really hoping someone can help me make sense of this. I have created a Server 2012 Active Directory domain and have created a second domain administrator account by creating a new user and adding that new user to the exact same groups as the default "Administrator" account. Seems simple, right? I've also created a default file share to be shared by all staff, as a test. The file share is in C:\Shares\SharedFolder, for simplicity sake. I've disabled inheritance on the "SharedFolder" and crafted my own permissions [keep in mind in Server 2000 and Server 2003 I have always done this and had absolutely no issues]. For share permissions, DOMAIN\Administrators = full control, and DOMAIN\Staff = full control. Both of these are groups. For Security, I have DOMAIN\Administrators = full control, and DOMAIN\Staff = modify. Again, both of these are groups. Then SYSTEM also has full control in Security. Great. Looks good. The identical setup on the previous Server 2003 network works flawlessly and always has. Now, because one of the 2003 servers is being carried over to the new network and virtualized, I've already used Disk2Vhd and converted it to a virtual machine, removed it from the previous domain, and added it to this domain as a test member server within Hyper-V on the domain controller. So, I then log out of the domain controller after making the group and security changes for the share. I have a login script that adds the share as a drive letter. Now, I log in to the domain controller [via RDP, same way I did the configuration with DOMAIN\Administrator] as the new test admin account, in the identical groups as the default Administrator account, and I notice I can't access the share. I see it in Computer, but I can't open it because I don't have permissions. Now, since the actual share folder resides on THAT machine that I'm RDP'd into, I open C:\Shares, and when I double click on SharedFolder, I got the "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click Continue to permanently get access to this folder." message, and then the Continue with UAC shield button. What's worse, is if I open a second RDP session and login as Administrator, and create just a new folder in the root of C, and then switch back to my test admin RDP session, I can't delete the folder without first right clicking on it, editing permissions, adding the test user that I'm logged in with, giving myself full control, applying, and THEN I can delete the folder. Just for fun, I logged in to the test VM I had carried over, running Server 2003, which is now on this network as a member server. I was able to log into that machine locally via Hyper-V manager, using the test domain admin account, and permissions worked perfectly. I could access the share with absolutely no issues and create and delete files/folders inside of it. Can someone please explain to me why this doesn't work in Server 2012, despite the test user having identical group permissions to the default Administrator account for the domain? I thought the idea was to be able to use groups whenever possible, but this share doesn't work unless I specifically define the individual user account of the new domain admin user. Thanks!

Has anyone else come across an issue where your windows 7 clients (all except 1st to connect) are very slow to access the network. This includes, logging in, access mapped drives and network start menu's. My 1st client will log in within 10 seconds the rest take up to a minuet. If i was to set a local desktop rather than network desktop they are all equally fast. Once they have logged in and I hit start on the machines, the 1st menu will load, the rest are slow as above. This is a Primary Network with 1 x Server 2012 Server running all services. If i add a second server as a member server and transfer the data to this system there are no issues.

Hi all, We've been having a problem with one of our servers over the past week. The LanmanServer service keeps hanging, and once it does it can't be restarted through the services MMC or using taskkill without force restarting the whole server (normal shutdown / restart just wait on the 'Restarting' screen). When it hangs, file shares become unresponsive and users are not able to log on or access files. There is nothing obvious logged in the event logs leading up to the problem, and it happens at random times during the day (it's happened twice within an hour and a half today, and not just when students are logging on for lessons). The server is fully responsive if you log into the console via Hyper-V manager (through RDP does not work) and there are no spikes or high usage logged in task manager or resource montor. I have tried to log it through Process Monitor, but it crashes out and doesn't save the backing files. Over the weekend this problem was not happening (as in I could browse file shares throughout the weekend, but there weren't any other users on the network) and all of our servers were restarted just in case there was something funny going on between them. The server in question is a Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V client, running AD, DNS and user home file shares, and the problem started last Tuesday. I have only been able to find one other question like this on the Internet, located here Windows Server Enterprise server service flakes out - Stack Overflow Members of our SMT are now asking what is causing it and for it to be resolved, but so far all that definitely fixes the problem for a temporary measure is force restarting the server which obviously isn't ideal. Any help or advice will be appreciated. Please ask if you need more information or clarifications.

Hi Has anyone else suffered this problem - on networked machines all working fine then a member of staff logs on does some work in office and tried to print and they get the message "No Printers installed :(" with the sad face! Have tried many solutions office repair, removing office, reinstalling office, But the only thing that seems to cure it is a re-image which is a bit of an extreme for a missing printer issue! (also scanned using Sophos to ensure its not a virus etc . .) We have a print server where all printers are installed that are shared out using classlink (11) running on server 2012 and we use a virtual print queue in paper cut. All machines are windows 7. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi there, Looking for some help in moving a set of virtual servers from one Hyper-V cluster to another. We have one cluster comprised of 5 servers connected to its own SAN (lets call it cluster 1), but we have just setup a new cluster running Server 2012 and connected it to its own NAS (cluster 2). We are still in the early stages so we do not want to migrate all the VMs in the entire cluster, rather one VM at a time. At the moment we have to export a VM in cluster 1 to a local storage location, copy it across the network to a node in cluster 2 and re-import it. Very time consuming. Is there a better way to get a server from one cluster to another? Thanks

I have installed Remote Desktop Services under Server 2012 in order that staff might get a feel for how Windows 8 works. Under my admin domain profile (the one used to install Office et al) the Start screen has tiles for office and a few other desktop applications but when a standard domain user logs in they simply get the default tiles and not office. I have added the office shortcuts to the "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu" directory in the hope that this would cause the shortcuts to appear but they don't. Am I missing something really obvious here? It would be nice to get the Office tiles to come up for all users instead of having to tell them to search for word and then pin to start. any help appreciated.

Hi, I hope everybody is having a good Easter. Here's a quick one as I'm probably being thick. I am running WSUS which appears to be doing everything it says on the tin. When updates are synced, I receive an email with a list. A large chunk of updates which have been downloaded are months old. I've been running it for about 2 years so it doesn't need to catch up with anything. There are links to security updates published back in 2014. The malicious software removal tool is often 6 months out of date. Is this just me being thick? Cheers, Paul.

Hi, I'm after a bit of advice really on the best way to setup our planned 2012 hyper-v cluster, we currently have hyper-v failover cluster running on 2008R2 but are not happy with the way it was setup (my fault, new to clustering and made a few bad decisions). I've attached a image of our proposed network config that I've cobbled together from MS Tech articles and best practices. In short what we will end up with is; *EDIT - Sorry about the diagram, visio isn't the best tool. Does this sound overkill? Is it even correct? Any help/guidance greatly appreciated. Mark

We are using local profiles in a 2012 domain. Currently have an issue with Chrome and students creating a shortcut on the desktop to C: We have used GP to block Chrome from accessing File:/// (working) but the Students can then drag that URL to the desktop, which in turn creates a working shortcut to C: For now we have restricted the use of Chrome, but struggling to find a resolution to this shortcut issue. Probably missing something very obvious. Anybody encountered this issue?

Hi Guys and Girls, This is my first post, so I'll combine my intro with a question :-) I'm from South Africa, and currently employed as a Network Administrator at a small - to medium size company (we have approx 250 users, and 10 servers). I'm certified in Microsoft and Cisco, but someday I hope to do only Cisco - I'm getting a bit tired of Microsoft... I have a MCTS: Windows 7 Configuring, CCENT and CCNA: Routing and Switching. Currently busy with my CCNP: R&S (i've already written and passed my first exam, CCNP: SWITCH) Question: I have just installed our first Server 2012 host - to be used as our new Thin Client server. (Hate the OS.........) I have configured everything, and all works very well, but as soon as I enable port redirection on the Thin Client - and the try establish the RDP connection, it pops up with a "The publisher of this remote connection cant be identified. Do you want to connect anyway?" message.... No matter what I do, it asks me this every time, even if I select "don't ask me again for connections to this computer." tick box at the bottom... How can I get rid of this popup? I want to make the experience as smooth as possible for the end users... Thank you in advance!!

Hello, We are currently running Windows Server 2012 Std with Volume Activation services enabled. Windows 8/7 and office 2010/2013 activate against this server but now we have our Windows 8.1 KMS key which we would like to add to this server. Is there something I need to do to add this? I remember there was a patch to activate windows 8 clients against a 2008R2 server but cant find anything for 8.1. Any ideas? Thank you, William
