Hi everyone, I use Group Policy Preferences (user configuration) to deploy a copier at a small office. The copier is the only printer on the network. The GPP option has always been set to "Create", and I've left it there so anyone who logs in on a machine they haven't logged into before simply gets the new printer. Done. Easy. Now, they've just received a new copier. The copier share name is the same, since the new copier is simply replacing the old copier. I replaced the driver on the server for that printer, set the options in the driver, and then changed the GPP option from "Create" to "Replace". This works. Everyone received the new copier the next time they logged in, as the GPP deleted the old printer connection and re-made it with the new one. My question is how long do I keep the "Replace" in there before switching it back to "Create"? In my mind, I'm thinking I'd have to leave it there before every user who's potentially logged into any machine before has logged into that machine again and had their printer connections swapped. Right now, the users won't be able to create their own preferences for that printer, because the copier connection will be deleted and re-added every time they log in. I was hesitant to set the GPP to "Update", since A, I didn't know if the drivers would change properly from the old ones, and B, I didn't know if that would overwrite custom settings set by the user in their driver every time. So what do you guys do? Should I leave the GPP set to Replace indefinitely? Should I set the "Run Once" box? Should I leave it at Replace for a couple more weeks then set it back to Create? If I leave it at Replace and Run Once, will new users who have never logged into a particular computer before receive the connection as if it was set to Create? What do you think? Thanks in advance!

Was not quite sure what section to post this in; but our school is now looking to buy our first laser. I have been asked to gather some information as I am the IT guy and am most familiar with this stuff! lol Does anyone know a good place to start? We are thinking about an A3 size printer. Aside from that I know little about them Any advice would be greatly received. Thanks

We have a printer shared via Group Policy and Print Management. To save money management wish the default settings to print in black and white. Users can change to colour output if they wish to. If they do change to print in colour, should the settings be reset to default (black and white) at any time? When the group policy is applied at login, for example?

A big massive thank you to Ben Whitemore! After countless hours spent researching how to bypass universal print and deploy out a network printer I found a 100% working solution. The best thing is that it is actually really simple to deploy. So... The process is the following, we are going to create a Win32 App which has all of the printer drivers and two powershell scripts, one is a install script and the other is a uninstall script. We do not edit the scripts at all and instead set all of our parameters for printer ip, driver names etc in the install command itself. 1. Create a folder wherever you want to work out of, I chose C:\Temp 2. Download IntuneWinAppUtil.exe and place it in the temp folder 3. Create a new folder in Temp called Printer (C:\Temp\Printer) 4. Create two powershell scripts in the Printer folder by copying and pasting the code below Install-printer.ps1 Uninstall-printer.ps1 5. Download the printer driver for the printer and place all the files in the C:\Temp\Printer folder, the printer driver files will be where the .inf file is 6. Find out what the printer driver name is by opening the .INF file or by installing the printer driver and getting the driver name from the list 7. Open CMD as a Administrator and run the following command cd C:\Temp\ .\IntuneWinAppUtil.exe Source Folder: C:\Temp\Printer Setup File: Install-Printer.ps1 Output Folder: C:\Temp\Printer Catalog: N We have now created the Win32 App in C:\Temp\Printer and are now going to deploy the app via Intune 8. Go to Intune Admin Center, Apps, Add a App, Win32App and select the Win32App you just made 9. Enter the Install and Uninstall command and obviously change it to your driver name, ip etc (the bits in bold) Install Command: powershell.exe -executionpolicy bypass -file .\Install-Printer.ps1 -PortName "IP_192.168.1.1" -PrinterIP "192.168.1.1" -PrinterName "Printer Colour" -DriverName "TOSHIBA Universal Printer 2" -INFFile "eSf6u.inf" Uninstall Command: powershell.exe -executionpolicy bypass -file .\Uninstall-Printer.ps1 -PrinterName "Printer Colour" 10. Set the requirements to the below: 11. Set the Detection Rule to the following but change the bold text, so at the end of the keypath needs to be the printer name and the value needs to be the printer name. Rule Type: Registry Key Path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Printers\Printer Colour Value Name: Name Detection Method: String Comparison Operator: Equals Value: Printer Colour 12. Set your deployment groups / users 13. Thank this post 14. Have a great day! Do you need technical advice, SharePoint migration assistance, or have general Microsoft Cloud queries? Running a small mono HP printer at home and it works fine even though it’s USB and we have to plug the cable into our laptops. It’s cheap to run and still using the same cartridge I fitted 8 years ago. Now the wife wants a colour printer so looking for something that has a small footprint and cheap to use. What do you suggest?

Hi all, At the school I work in we are trying to build up a case against the people who sold us the printers in that we were oversold. In order to do this we need an accurate counter list, for this to be accurate we need to find out when the counter list is from. I KNOW it is from when we got the printers, but without physical proof they aren't worth sod all. Does anybody know how, or if, I can get access to that? The printer is a Ricoh C5110s, we have access to Machine Admin, Superviser, and Service Mode if any of that is necessary.

Morning All, I have a bit of an issue, i am trying to get a member of staff to print from a hp laerjet 5550 printer however when i try to print it prints the following: PCL XL error Subsystem :KERNEL Error: Illegaloperatorsequence Operator: Endsession Position: 428 But if i print it from my machine that added the printer it prints fine. Any idea's? Thanks in advance.

Hi all, Have a query with regards to printer security permissions on our 2003 domain... I have a printer that I need to deny access to. Basically kids printing to it from other areas of the school (should only be the computers in that room that can print to it). This is what I've done: added computer accounts that shouldn't print to it to a security group. Added that security group to the printer, with a deny 'print' tick box. However, I was still able to add the printer and print to it from one of those PCs! Where am I going wrong? Thanks!

We've been looking at replacement cartridges for our printers and have noticed that our normal supplier (Misco) has started selling 'Inkrite' branded non-OEM cartridges for about half the price of the HP branded equivalent. What's everyone's experience of non-OEM toner cartridges? Are they a worthwhile saving from manufacturers who've been ripping us off or are they a false economy and more hassle than they're worth? TIA

Hello, I've been having a problem with a few of our netbooks. They are all Windows 7. I have two which will not save the Printer drivers. I have to keep logging on to the server to reinstall the drivers. I have tried resetting the printer spoiler. I seriously have no other clues on a fix. I'm pretty much new to the technician world. So there might eb aobvious things I'm mission out. So please if you know of a fix. Please tell me! Thank you everyone who comments.

Just incase anyone else has this now or in the future we have found HP TCP/IP drivers cause a rather large memory leak. We have had a server falling over with a complete freeze, not able to log on physically or remotely. Afterwards it was saying that there was no non-paged memory pool left. We finally got a chance to track it down with arious tools and found it was the printers on that server using the HP TCP/IP port. Solution: Recreate all the ports as Standard TCP/IP Ports and reasign the printers to them instead. Then the HP ports can be deleted. Ok, countdown to the first person to say "Didn't you know this all ready?!"

How do you get rid of your waste toners? We used to be paid for ours but now we are looking at paying approx £100 \ 60 litre box which we recon we will fill 2 of every month. Ideally we'd like to avoid them going straight to landfill. Chris

Hi, we have a lot of kit that we loan to teachers and students, and are looking to use the Access IT software we use in the library, to manage whos got what etc. We now need to find a cheap way of generating barcode labels. Does anyone have any bomb proof methods, or software that generates barcodes and then prints onto small avery labels. Preferably free. Thanks in Advance

Hello, we have a few HP 4515's in computer labs around our campus with anywhere between 28-33 machines connected to them. VERY sporadically, they will print a job that will continue printing out pages indefinitely, comprised only of random characters on a single line near the top of the page. This tends to be a problem mostly during busier times, when a handful of students may be printing around the same time. If left unchecked, it will easily empty out all of the paper in the machine, and stop any further print jobs until it is at least power cycled. I made sure that the firmware is up to date (Firmware: 20120112 04.160.9) and we have made sure the drivers were up to date as well. We haven't been able to reproduce the problem ourselves, so it is difficult to find out the exact cause. We were hoping to nail it down to possibly the size/format of a file being printed, but no luck. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any advice, Will

Hi, Have a computer on one subnet trying to print to printer on another subnet, but "printer is not responding" when print job is sent. The set up is: Router on 192.168.10.0/24 with connected printer using 192.168.10.49 The router is connected to a second Router's WAN port, and that second router is providing 192.168.20.0/22, which has a computer connected to it 192.168.20.50 OS X Computer 192.168.20.50 can ping Xerox Printer 192.168.10.49, but can't actually print to it. Attempting to use IIP printing protocol, since Bonjour is no good over subnets. If computer can get ping response from printer, why can't it print to it?

Hi We have a Toshiba eStudio 6560c Multifunction Printer in school and we are trying to get it to print in Booklet mode on the Apple Mac's. I can get the Fold down the Page but it does not flip the Page to 1 sheet It is currnetley printing like this, and would like to print like this, On a Windows PC I have the option of a colour booklet profile but mac does not :-( Any help would be great,

I picked up a very lightly used Pixma780 for home. Having just embarked on a CD production project for for work, I thought I'd just experiment with printing a label on a CD (just to see how it worked, how long etc) but I find I need a special tray for the disk. I'll go back to where it came from, but I'm not optimistic! Does anyone have one they don't need (unlikely), know where I could buy one, or even if one could be fudged out of some tackyback plastic and cardboard? Failing that, what would you recommend that we buy? 50-100 disk batches I suppose, colour would be a luxury, although I suppose there may not be a choice.

Morning all, We're looking at purchasing a few small printers for our classrooms, we have a few Richo printers but had allot of issues with them. Looking to replace them with high mono laser printers, of course something that is cheap to run, and toner that works and won't cost a bomb! If anyone can point me in the right direction? Ta!

Hi, Our school is finally replacing 60+ printers for a fleet of 10 MFD managed printers. I am wondering if anyone here knows of a legal way of selling these older printers to save some money for the school rather than just scrapping them or donating them to a charity. The business manager is worried that we cant sell them on ebay for example, as this may affect our funding rights (as printers were bought without VAT) or be classed as fraudulent, so is wondering if there is any legitimate avenues for selling these onto a third part company (Midlands area). Even if it generates £10-£20 per device that would be something the school could use to put back in for our students. Any advice or info greatly received.
