Hello, Ive searched far and wide for a solution to this issue, and have stumbled across similar answers and some very unhelpful ones too. Basically, all of our computers have several media players installed. WMP, WinAmp and VLC. Winamp is currently the default, we would like to change this back to WMP. I know you can go onto a machine individually and reset the file associations or go through the "Set Default Programs and Access" option within control panel. But I am having difficulty trying to work out how to do this in a batch job. I thought of deploying a reg fix through an adm in group policy, but cant for the life of me find where this setting is stored in the registry. I also know that there is no out of the box gpo for this either. Any help/ideas would be much appreciated. This is where i miss having Impero's key/mouse stroke script creator!

We're using HP Procurve manager to track network traffic over our 100Mbps intersite link. We run one AD based network over both sites. Before half term everything was fine. Since half term there have been periods of activity where the link becomes saturated one way, sending data from the site with our main servers on it to he other site. All we changed over half term was printing. Each site's PCs print to a local print server so it shouldn't be a print related issue. There is no pattern to it either, it mainly happens at lesson changeover but not always. We have 200 staff so asking all of them if they are using a large files at these times would be too onerous a task especially as few would actually know if the files they use are large. We're using wireshark to try to track packets but we've not found a way of analysing the stats this collects to see who or what is creating these packet bursts. Does anyone know how we can analyse/track the packets to identify source and destination of the top 10 so that we can then look at these machines to see what the data is? We suspect is there is a way to track this on the servers too. Our "video" server is on the main site so teachers viewing videos would create this large volume one way traffic. We're in the process of replicating this to a local server to reduce this intersite traffic but we need to prioritise which resources to replicate. Is there a way on a windows 2008 server to see who has which files open so we can study these during a "period of saturation"? I tried the sysinternals tools (Procmon (used to be filemon)) but had no luck. Any help appreciated. ChrisJ

Well, I have another issue I'd like ideas on: Our new student information system (Star Student) has been recently installed and runs on Oracle, using 3 different servers. We access the system through a web browser, though the servers are hosted in our network. (They can be accessed from outside the school system as well). The system uses the Java plugin and requires no higher build than 6 update 7 (of the JRE I believe). To make a long story somewhat shorter, the program locks up at various times of the day, for various users. I have Star's support team looking at the server logs to see if there is anything noted on that end of things. We recently rolled out new XP machines to admin staff, and some of these users are noticing this lock up issue; however, not all users of Star with these new computers are experiencing it. I'm very weak in the network troubleshooting area (as is the rest of our staff) and would love any advice on how to troubleshoot this area. I either need to pinpoint the problem or be able to conclusively rule this out as a problem; many higher-up staff believe this to be a network problem as we have had sporadic network issues in the past. Alternatively, I may be able to run to Java console logger to see if the program is throwing any Java errors. The users don't report any errors coming up; the program simply freezes. Aside from whatever the servers may suggest (and any Oracle troubleshooting ideas couldn't hurt), what else can I do? Would a packet sniffer (like Snort?) be an idea? Thanks as always.

Hi, We have a problem with SIMS.net on Vista and Windows 7 Laptops where the error missing or incorrect s:\sims\connect.ini is sometimes shown. In the XP era this always meant the network wasn't connected either by wire or wireless and was easy to fix. It is equally easy to fix on vista\7 by going into my computer and seeing that s:\ has a cross through it, double clicking it reconnects the drive and makes sims work again. (missing network is still also a possibility). This happens a lot and there must be a way to prevent it. Is there a group policy or reg change to prevent this network disconnecting procedure in the newer OS's? Thanks,

Hey guys, So... I've recently explained to my boss about this piece of software that is able to view live-desktops in various computer labs (iTALC) And for the past week, I've been slowly getting through each computer, even though there is only like 25... However... The install on all of them has gone fine, without a hitch. Key files are all setup, pointing to UNC file paths on the LAN - I've tested the permissions on these, and they are working fine, so is authentication. However, when it comes to setting up the iTALC application on master computers, there is a little hitch-up which is making me want rip. my. hair. out. I can connect the computers fine to them, I can see them being interacted with, however, after about 30 minutes, the iTALC application on the master computer will crash, completely, requiring the program to be restarted. It keeps telling me that the application (ica.exe) has encountered an error and had to close... This is extremely annoying. I have tried installing this on multiple iTALC versions - 2.0 and 1.9.7 But, it is still crashing, which I find to be very weird... All the clients are running Windows XP Professional SP3 - Norton is installed on the clients, but I don't see how this could be affecting them? The master computers are all running the same except for the main server, which is running Windows Server 2008 Standard 64 bit If you guys have any Idea what could be causing this, could you please, please let me know? P.S - Would any of you know what the VPN feature of the program does, I am looking into a way that we could remote view students who are not currently in the lab but are at home doing work for their respective classes using some sort of a VPN/Terminal Server solution? Thanks, - James.

Hi guys, I am wondering if there is a little problem with which you can help me out. We have recently changed our music department over from Mac's to PC's and we are now using the Sibelius software. It took me a week to sort out how I would install the sounds across the network to some 20-something machines, however that has worked but now I have a bigger issue. I cannot seem to locate where the configuration files for the Audio Engine Options are being stored, I need to find out as we have been able to change the settings to get 11ms latency (compared to the 90+ms we had before) however there seems to be: 1) No way of storing these beyond a user's session. 2) No way of delivering these settings to all of the music computers in the music room. Do any of you have any experience with this? I just appear to be at a loss at the moment. Thanks in advance.

At my schools the generic network is vlan 1, servers and managment vlan 20 and wireless vlan 100. right now they are static vlans. We are a 100% hp procurve shop. 5406 core, 3500ly edge I could use some advice on "laptop mobile lab carts". we purchased 8 and they have our ap installed in them. so a teacher can check one out, take it to class plug in the carts network jack and power, off they go. so inorder for the ap in the cart to get vlan 100, i either tag all ports on all switches in vlan 100 or use gvrp (read this is a possible nightmare) or other (not sure of any other option). i don't see an issue with tagging everything vlan 100, destops will continue to operate on vlan 1 and ignore the tagged traffic. But does anyone have any other suggestion? Thanks!

Hello everyone, We teach Digital Photography and they have a set of laptops that they use Photoshop on. However, the problem is that they are slow to load up PSD documents and due to the size of the image files that they are working tend to crash. The department have asked for some new and up to date laptops, however, we believe that it is the wireless network that is slowing these laptops down and causing them to crash when saving large image files onto the network server. The wireless network is N. With a Gigabit uplink all the way to the server. My question is, has anyone else found themselves in the same situation as us and how have they gone about solving it. There is no room for any hard-wired desktops and as the room is multi use between being used for art and digital photography we cannot really implement any permanent solution, so keeping the laptops wireless offers flexibility. Any help/advice regarding the above would be appreciated greatly. Thanks in advance. J.Worth.

When trying to download content from a particular site, it is really slow. This problem only shows up for any sites that fall within a range of IP addresses that the web server is hosted on. Going through a proxy server from different countries, there appears to be no problem. I've done a traceroute and everything appears fine. The problem clearly has to do with HTTP, has nothing to do with the host server and probably isn't a problem with any of the routers along the way, although it can't be entirely ruled out. That leaves me with the impression that my LAN or local router is having problem with the HTTP content. I have no firewall active. If I attempt to download a 550 kb text file from the remote server, it takes nearly a minute to complete and you can see it downloading in chunks. The problem shows up in all browsers. If the problem has something to do with my LAN or computer, I'm stumped as to figure out how to locate the problem. The problem is only within a certain range of IP addresses and you cannot see a problem with Ping or traceroute, meaning that it is not a TCP/IP problem but a HTTP problem. Where can I look to figure out what is causing the latency?

Hi, If anyone else out there uses Autograph? I know that running Autograph 3.2 from a network location not strictly supported, however, for us with over 200 PCs, this is the most convenient(!), Deploying via AD is not an option. I am investigating if this is possible. (we do have a network site licence). I have got the program running without issue over the network from a network share (without installing on any workstation). The only problem is, Autograph does not pick up the licence. I know it is stored in the registry of a machine that has it installed, but when i merge this registry key on a machine that does not have it installed autograph still does not pick it up. Is there anything i can do to get autograph to detect the license key? Help is appreciated! Thanks
