This won't affect anyone on Windows 10 22H2 with ESUs, but if your plan to continue using Windows 10 involves using the LTSC version of 21H2 (EOL next year for non-IoT) or 1809 (EOL 2029), or you have a folder on your server (<2025, as 2022 is 21H2) syncing scanned documents (like we do) then you'll not be getting any more security or bugfix updates for OneDrive. Message Centre post: https://admin.cloud.microsoft/?ref=MessageCenter/:/messages/MC1426708 (including a copy below as the formatting on the message makes it unreadable - also note that they say 22H1 or earlier, but that doesn't exist as they moved to annual for the last year of W10)

Hi, Been asked to spec a server for a average sized primary school. How would you spec this server? Processor? Ram? Don't want to go majorly overkill but do want enough power and 'futureproof' in the box for it to last. Are you able to recommend a server? Preferably a tower server due to the location! Many thanks

Afternoon all, Profile manager is driving me nuts. Basically I'm moving from a 10.9 and Workgroup Manager server environment to a 10.9 client and 10.10 server running profile manager. I have a set of test machines which point at the new mac server running profile manager - I'm not crossing the streams with any current / old systems. I will re-image the estate once (if ever) profile manager is sturdy. My main question is, are there any techies out there who have a successful Profile Manager environment within an education establishment? We have an AD domain and use OD to piggy back on to it. Basically the Mac server just sets user accounts and machine settings - no network files as such are stored on the mac server. Workgroup manager worked a treat and I'm quite comfortable with editing custom plists. Profile manager however just seems to clunky with failed profile installs here and there. Things that I've not got solid yet on the Profile Manager set up are : - desktop wallpaper set from a central network location - sidebar favourites intermittent - exchange settings intermittent (setting server location and username etc) - plus I'm sure lots more that will become apparent

Hi, All our servers runs on on-premise VMware cluster. We have Active Directory with multiple child domains. We have recently migrated from on-premise Exchange to the Office 365 for the emails. Few departments use SharePoint to store the teaching/learning resources (Site-Pages/Documents library). We use Veeam for the backup; DR site has critical servers replicated by the Veeam. Do you guys use Azure VM/Storage or any Azure services for your school ? If you do then could you please share your experience on what do you use it for ? Thank you

Hi Guys, I've setup WDS many times, this time is the first time I've ever set it up on a network with multiple VLANs and having WDS installed on it's own server, usually I've had it installed on the domain controller. I have it running, it works on multiple VLANs and I've used t to deploy multiple custom images to various Laptops and desktops. My images are x64 UEFI. I have a work bench setup solely for deploying images via WDS. So my Switch and switch port are exactly the same, there's been no network changes and i can still use WDS on other devices successfully. This one PC (Lenovo Thinkcentre Edge72) I've went through BIOS multiple times. I've disabled secure boot and changed the boot time to UEFI Only. I've checked all other settings and nothing else is relevant. I used to get something along the lines of "NBP File too large for memory" Now after fiddling I get "TFTP Error, access violation" I can't seem to get past this for this single machine. Any ideas other than grab a large hammer?

Just wondering if anyone knows what needs doing on the tills if we change the cashless catering server address? Can't be that difficult but don't want to miss anything. Contacted Civica about changing server IP address and they want £1652 +VAT to change the 3 tills that we have! I have asked them to justify the cost in terms of number of days / engineers on site and they haven't responded. TIA Neil

I've recently been given the choice between the above two servers, to be used as a development server. However, I'm unsure which would best suit my needs. My development environment will essentially be VMWare host running 2 or 3 VM's. On the vm's will be running MS Small Business Server, Terminal Services and maybe a web server. Your thoughts please and thanks in advance

EduGeek I have an urgent request for assistance with my Server 2012 domain controller. I have 2 DC’s, both HP DL380 (Latest model) DC1- Hold all the FSMO roles and hosts a couple of hyper-v virtual servers. We had an issue with Sophos not functioning / Sophos services not starting Sophos advised to restart the server, and then remove Sophos. I restarted the server and it now fails to boot and hangs on applying computer settings. I have restarted and try booting into safemode without joy. The DC is currently hung in safe mode boot with the message “failure configuring windows features reverting changes, do not turn off your computer” and the little circle wheel spinning round. This has been like this for about two hours. Can anyone give me some advice / ideas ? Thankyou

I'm trying to configure 2 RAID arrays on a Dell R410 server which seems to be problematic. The server has a PERC6i card installed along with the factory shipped LSI SAS controller. When looking at the RAID configuration from the BIOS I cant see any physical drives although there are 4x 1TB drives attached to the drive bays at the front. The PERC6i card I have is attached to to a riser and which was shipped as part of the initial server build and also has the LSI SAS controller attached, there is a SAS cable that runs from the hot plug back plane (HDD backplane) to the riser which all seems to be working but no physical drives are being detected or showing in the RAID configuration. Bios has SATA mode set to RAID. Could the issue be that the Perc card Im using is incompatible or is there something else Im missing? Thanks Matt

Afternoon Guys, Got yet another issue with DPM. working with DPM 2012r2 and im trying to backup an exchange 2013 server as a VM. It creates the initial replica then it tries to do the first sync and i immediately get this error. An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Call context cannot be accessed after call completed (0x80010117) Ive googled this and have had pretty much no luck at all, the call context cannot be accessed part of the error seems to be a generic error that covers a wide variety of issues, just wondered if anyone has come across this error before with DPM Ive checked the event viewer and there are no errors logged related to this, unless im looking in the wrong place? im checking the application logs and asking DPM to publish alerts to EV just tells me the same error that DPM is showing any help would be greatly appreciated -Vicky Tofield IT technician for The Hatton Academies Trust

Dear all, I've recently set up 2 windows servers, running server 2008. At the login screen after your press CTRL ALT DEL it used to give the format: **OurDomainName\Administrator e.g. mydomain\Administrator However now it's for some reason giving the format: **OurFullyQualifiedDomainName\Administrator e.g. mydomain.internal\Administrator Being relatively new to windows server 2008, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated as to why this has suddenly changed. Many Thanks.

I currently run 2 Server 2003 DCs and have a number of non-Windows clients - Debian Lenny (Samba version is 3.2.5), OS X (Tiger and Leopard) and Sun 7110 stroage boxes... plus a couple of web apps like GLPI that auth against AD. Now the question that I can't find a definitive answer to is this... if I install a Server 2008R2 DC, I believe the cryptography algorithms will change which may stop things authenticating. There is a workaround noted at The Net Logon service on Windows Server 2008 and on Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controllers does not allow the use of older cryptography algorithms that are compatible with Windows NT 4.0 by default but I don't want to implement that if I don't have to... so will everything break when I create the 2008R2 DC?

Hello Everyone, We are just trialing what i thought was a great product. It installs like a dream, is super easy to use and ticks all the boxes we need. However, when using it we found that it couldn't find our wireless laptops and then discovered the broadcast / multicast settings that are needed. This doesn't work for a few reasons, a) we have 5 vlans, student desktop/wireless, staff desktop/wireless and server network. so straight away the 3 network options means we cant run it on all 5 vlans b) Broadcast traffic, it says in a manual I have been sent that my managed switches need to be configured to allow this traffic. Are you for real? Do i need to change all my switches for your software to work? c) If I am a techie who wants to use the tool for remote access I can use channel 0 (great stuff) but the the above vlan issue will stop it working how i need it to. Now I am wondering if I am completly wrong about all this and there is something I am missing, if anyone works in environment where you have this working, working well in a managed switch VLAN environment please let me know how you overcame these issues. Thanks Matt

Anyone tried installing Office 2007 to a share then getting users to run it from there? is there a limit to the connections? basically, we would rather not have to RIS and then install Office 2007 to every PC in our building, so this could be one solution, to get round that. (we have several issues installing Office 2007 on our PC's which usually requires a clean build to get many things inside the suite working)

What is the difference between single, dual and quad ranked memory? What is best? I think I know the differences, but can't put this information into real world use. Some old information on the Kingston web site implies that some chipsets restrict the total number of ranks available. So going for dual or quad rank memory my restrict total memory. I checked on the Dell specification website for this machine and specified a machine with 8 x 4GB dual ranked modules to give 32GB RAM so it looks like dual rank memory does not affect the max memory of this machine. (I could have done same with 8GB RDIMMs and get 64GB but went with 4GB RDIMMs as that was what we were looking to buy).

Hi all, I have recently joined a school and it is my responsibility to ensure that we have enough licenses for all our computers etc. I was wondering if there was a way that I can check to see how many licenses we currently have for Server 2003 and how it works. For example, if I were to buy two more computers then how would I know that we have enough licenses for these computers? The bursar seems to think that we need to get more licenses but I do not know who holds our licenses - nobody here seems to know how many we have or the contact details of a company who may be able to help me (previously I have used Rameseys at other schools). Can I check on the server how many CALs we have? And does it work in the same way for Exchange?

Hi All, We have just installed a new managed wireless network on site. We used to have Ranger installed on the laptops which had to be taken off as Ranger Network was not designed for wireless networks. My question is how do i lock down the student areas similar to Ranger, will the new settigns conflict with the existing Ranger GPO settings? Are there other tools i could use in parallel with Ranger that can be installed on laptops only? We are running a Windows 2003 environment with XP clients. Regards A

Citrix have just announced a new version of their free Xen Server, version 5.5 The bullet points: * Consolidated Backup allows third-party backup vendors to interface directly with XenServer to provide full and incremental, in-guest, file and image backups of virtual machines. The new consolidated backup capabilities in XenServer also provide customers with the ability to execute full GUI-based snapshots directly from the XenCenter central management console. * Enhanced Conversion Tools make it easy to convert virtual machines created in the VMDK format (commonly used by VMware) into the VHD format (commonly used by Citrix XenServer and Microsoft Hyper-V). The new XenConvert tools also make it easy to seamlessly convert between any of the common open virtualization format packages, including OVF (open virtualization format), OVA (open virtual appliance) and XVA (XenServer virtual appliance). * Enhanced Search enables customers to view and manage XenServer environments by a range of criteria including VM name, resource pool, location, server, storage repository, snapshot time, and network name – all from a single location. It also provides the ability to create custom views or folders. * Active Directory Integration makes it easy for customers to use their AD credentials to mange XenServer hosts as well as log and audit user activity. * Expanded Guest Support adds SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, Debian 5.0 and RedHat/CentOS/Oracle 5.3 to a growing list of supported guests that includes virtually every version of the Windows and Linux operating systems. The beta, as well as a 30-day trial version of Citrix Essentials, is available at Citrix Systems » Citrix XenServer: Efficient Virtual Server Software. The beta version of the new Citrix XenServer 5.5 is also available today and can be downloaded free of charge from Citrix Systems » Products » -- XenServer/Essentials » XenServer. The 5.5 version of both product lines will be generally available June 19. Linky: Citrix Systems » Citrix Upgrades Server Virtualization Product Lines for XenServer and Hyper-V

Hi Chaps, I hope you're all enjoying your summer holidays! Shortly before the start of the summer hols I finally took ownership of my first house and have spent the last 4-5 weeks doing various refurbishment works to turn it in to the sort of house I want to live in. For part of these works I was hoping to turn my small (~1mx~1.5m) airing cupboard into a server room, as I have just had the boiler replaced with a combi boiler, meaning no hot water cylinder, and basically no heat in the airing cupboard at all. I have oodles of storage space for towels, bed stuff etc which leaves me with this room fairly idle. As bed3, which neighbours the airing cupboard, is to be my office/den/games room I am hoping to sit my UPS, my server (poweredge 1800) and my day to day gaming workstation in the airing cupboard and feed all cables through the stud wall in to my office which should hopefully provide a relatively quiet working/gaming environment. I have gone through great discomfort (itchiness mostly) in more thoroughly insulating the house and now realise I really need to worry about getting rid of some of the heat that will build up in the airing cupboard. The airing cupboard is a little more than a door width wide, has a stud wall either side of it neighbouring bed3 and the bathroom and the other wall being the external wall on the back of the house. The reason I am asking for advice here is, I am aware that many smaller schools (possibly primary schools?) potentially have little more equipment in their server rooms, and possibly similar sized server rooms and felt that there would at least be someone out there who has already thought about the scenario and may be able to offer me some advice. Can I get away with some form of extractor fan (perhaps thermostatically controlled) pushing heat through the outside wall, or am I likely to need to go the whole hog and install an A/C unit for the room? Having already spent a considerable amount on developing the house I don't want to go nutty here but at the same time I'm not looking to cook my server/games machine! Any advice boys n girls? Thanks
