Hi I am just experimenting with some virtualisation. i have setup a VMWare ESXi 6 host and added a couple of VMs. I have installed vSphere on my Windows 7 station and can connect to the ESXi 6 host with no trouble and administer it. I have downloaded and installed Veeam 8 Free. It is installed on my Windows 7 station and the installation went smoothly and it opens and everything appears to be OK. So, when I try to add a server, it asks me for the DNS name or IP address of the VMWare server. I am assuming this is the IP address of the ESXi host which I am entering. Next, it asks me for the server administrators credentials. Are these the credentials of the ESXi host i.e. the root account or the credentails of the machine where vSphere is installed. I would really appreciate any advice on this. Thanks.

Hey all, Last weekend my VMWare host crashed out big time - whole network was out on Monday morning - DC's, print servers, everything. Could have been something wrong with the power in the room. Nothing in the UPS logs though! In addition to that, Smoothwall was hung, CCTV and a couple of switches hung. RAID needed rebuilding on a backup NAS. I have no idea what happened and logs don't point me in any specific direction! Nothing consistent except I suspect power problems. A full reboot sorted it, and a reboot/restore of all the guest machines. What I'm getting at is where my VMWare host is concerned is it possible to configure a 2nd host to 'hot' migrate. e.g. if Host 1 goes down, guests are in a 'hot' up to date state to take over ? I know this won't help some of the issues above but I'm planning on implementing a 2nd host at Easter and would like to do this rather than load balance. Is it possible ? We're running Esxi 5.5 Essentials plus (will be upgrading to v6 at Easter) and also using Veeam. Will vMotion do this for me ? Cheers in advance

We run VSphere 6 and are about to attempt it. Never done it before and last time it was done (before my time) we had to do a baremetal recover the virtual server. Can anybody please give us some advise such what to look out for ... or even "dont do it !!" These are the instructions we found : http://https://www.experts-exchange.com/articles/12938/HOW-TO-Shrink-a-VMware-Virtual-Machine-Disk-VMDK-in-15-minutes.html

Hi, All our servers runs on on-premise VMware cluster. We have Active Directory with multiple child domains. We have recently migrated from on-premise Exchange to the Office 365 for the emails. Few departments use SharePoint to store the teaching/learning resources (Site-Pages/Documents library). We use Veeam for the backup; DR site has critical servers replicated by the Veeam. Do you guys use Azure VM/Storage or any Azure services for your school ? If you do then could you please share your experience on what do you use it for ? Thank you

Hello everyone, I have recently started to provide support to a small secondary school. They have a Server 2019 VM running on ESX and it's just started to Blue Screen. The VM is running the school's RD Gateway. The BSODs are either SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION or ATTEMPTED_WRITE_TO_READONLY_MEMORY and it also shows NTFS.sys. Has anyone else come across this before and if so, how did you go about resolving it? Many thanks in advance.

Morning All We will be having our SIMS server P2V'd over the summer and the existing hardware brining into our Cluster. Although I'm less optimistic about this after reading this: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/168374-users-reported-using-sims-very-slow-how-improve-performance-sims.html The company we would usually use for this has quoted over £1,300 just for the P2V element, which I personally feel is very excessive given the actual work that it involves. I have been looking at taking the P2V element of this work on myself but the fact that it is the SIMS server is making me uneasy. Is there anything in particular that needs to be done with SIMS to ensure a successful P2V? What my basic understanding suggests, keeping everyone off SIMS for the duration: Install VMware Converter on the SIMS Server. Stop all SQL instances and all non Microsoft services. Select an appropriate ESX host by IP and an appropriate storage location. Keep the workstation name the same. Remove any local mapped drives from being moved. Make sure that the network interface is not connected at power on. After the migration completes. Remove any unnecessary hardware mappings like serial and parallel ports from the VM. Power off physical SIMS server and bring virtual server online. Re-Map any removed shares. Restart all stopped services and SQL instances. Test, test and test some more. Like I said, anything other than the SIMS server and I'd be quite happy to take a swing at it. Or would I be better off paying for it to be moved and removing the what if factor? Any advice or suggestions welcome.

I have a script that takes a snapshot backup of VMs sitting on an ESXi host on a weekly basis to a backup PC. Since last week I have now come across a spare server that's been donated on a temporary basis and decided I'd set it up as another host just for testing purposes. I copied the backed up VMs over to the new host to see if they boot up; imported it the .VMX's into the inventory and, lo and behold, they don't. I get an error message popping up saying "File not found." I have double checked everything to make sure all files were copied over. I even opened up some of the files in notepad to see if their names had got muddled up, or it was referencing something it shouldn't, and I couldn't see anything obvious. I copied the VMs from a HP ML 350 G5 to a ML 370 G5. Where have I gone wrong?

Hi All, I've got one physical Server which has got Windows Server 2008 Datacenter sticker on it and based on this document: http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/about-licensing/virtualization.aspx i can deploy unlimited any version of Windows Server 2000-2003-2008 VM on my ESXi, now the question is that "Which serial number should I use for those VM ?" can anyone share your experience in deploying VM under Datacenter 2008 license please ? Thanks.

Hi All, I'd like to perform database application transactional and concurrent load testing which requires approx. 100 IP address in a single host (Windows Server 2003 box) so that one NIC can have multiple IP address. Is there any quick way (Powershell / NetSH) to create those IP address in one single box ? example: VM-Simulator1 - 10.2.1.1 10.2.1.2 10.2.1.3 10.2.1.4 10.2.1.5 . . . 10.2.1.102 VM-Simulator2 - 10.2.2.1 10.2.2.2 10.2.2.3 10.2.2.4 10.2.2.5 . . . 10.2.2.102 i know how to do it in Windows Server 2003 manually one by one but that's too daunting to do it manually. Thanks.

Does anyone know how to get vmware player to load up with out any tool bar options and to stop students from changing settings to the image? I have had it setup in MS Virtual PC 2007 and got it just how I wanted it but then no usb support so I have had to import the image into vmware player. We want to have a desktop for students to use visual studio but this has problems on our system with security so a virtual desktop is a great option but when i try to create one in vmware player V3 the student has options on the tool bar even if I set it up to full screen mode. any ideas? or anyone explain how to get a usb drive to work in MS virtual PC 2007 Allan

I know a lot of people use VMware, Virtual PC etc to create a base image that they sysprep and then deploy to their network PCs. My query is how does one go about removing, say, VMware drivers from their image after sysprepping and instead it picks up the relevant ones from under 'out-of-box' drivers in MDT when deployed? My image works fine but at the same time you'll find in C:\Drivers there'll be the workstation's drivers as well as VMware drivers.

Hi guys! I am fairly new to the world of desktop virtualization. And I have a question some of you may find funny due to its noobish nature. I am also new here, so if I missed anything or did something against the norms of this forum, I apologize in advance. First, I will explain the process: My client has a server that holds X number of images (.TIFF files). Multiple computers access that server via Citrix to work on those image files. The extent of the 'work' mentioned only includes: 1. Labeling - by inserting a line of text on the image, like a watermark of sort. 2. Validation - the image is a scanned copy of documents. Image quality is not that important, as long as it is readable. The Fineprint: 1. Server is located on a different continent. 2. As a security measure, image files cannot be downloaded, thus the need to access the server via Citrix. All applications needed to work on the images are also published/virtualized from there. 3. There is no minimum screen resolution requirement to view the images as long as it is readable. 4. Connection to the client is via MPLS/IPBB (40Mbps). Some Notes: 1. Version of Citrix being used TBD. 2. Assuming they are using v4.5 or later, and SpeedScreen is already enabled (well, it is enabled by default). lol 3. Other image compression tools were already used. THE QUESTION(S): Is Citrix the best tool for this job? What are my alternatives/options given this kind of task? The client finds the image rendering too slow and cumbersome, even with the image compression activated. From what I have read, Citrix employs lossy compression while VMWare, lossless. There is still a lot of gray area in this scenario. I have already sent my set of questions to the client (will get the answers next week as soon as the person responsible comes back from vacation), and I will be posting them here as soon as I get them. TL;DR: Working on image files on a remote server using Citrix and the client finds the image rendering too slow. What are my other options aside from Citrix? Thank you!

Hi All, I'm looking and wondering if there is any backup solution which capable of doing backup from my iSCSI SAN into the ESXi local datastore that can be automated with the support of file level restore ? the VM is having a RDM LUN so i need to be able to restore a single file in case the VM failed or the RDM LUN got corrupted. Any idea or suggestion in how to do it please ? Thanks.

I can deal with most things in ePortal but after installing the Facility Data Server and ePortal onto a newly installed Citrix XenServer virtual 2003 Server, I am getting this error when connecting to ePortal. Has anyone ever seen this before? If so, can you shed some light on the cause? Unable to perform taks. Error: The specified call count is not a number

Hi all, I've been playing with Xen, VMware ESX and Hyper-V for a little while and I was just wondering if there seems to be a consensus of which is most popular in a school environment? If you are using one of these virtualisation technologies in a school/education system or are likely to soon, would you mind voting in the poll to show your preference? If you look at threads like this one then you can see a huge use of VMware in more enterprise-level setups, and certainly everything I've read and seen would suggest VMware ESX is the most powerful virtualisation technology out there. However, here are my personal experiences with the three technologies: Hyper-V - Disappointing, far more complex to set up than it needs to be, and only supports Windows (and SUSE Enterprise) guest VMs. Even in it's Core form, I personally find Server 2008 to be much more work to configure and manage than setting up a ESX or Xen host. If you want to do things properly then you need SCVMM (and a MS SQL server). Costs are good as it will be mostly 'free' for those who have MS volume licensing. Xen - I considered Xen to be the underdog as it hasn't got the large deployments of VMware or the big name of Microsoft behind it, but so far it has really impressed me. It is so unbelievably easy to set up and use, the XenCenter console take two minutes to install and configure, and there's no dependence on a central management server or SQL database to control your setup. Does anyone know where the pool config is stored with Xen - presumably it's replicated across the hosts? VMware ESX - I really wanted to love this product, but so far it hasn't impressed me that much. Maybe vSphere will be better? The ESX Hardware Compatibility List seems pickier than Xen (not a problem if you're buying new servers, but it was a real pain to have to buy new NICs to fit in brand new Dell desktops for testing), it requires a dedicated VCenter Server that needs an SQL database (you can't really virtualise this box so does it not become a single point of failure?), and seems far more awkward to set up than Xen. My Xen setup was as simple as building a couple of hosts (five minute each), installing XenCenter (two minutes), configure a LUN on a SAN (two minutes), create a Pool on XenCenter, add the hosts and a Storage Repository from the SAN (five minutes), tick High Availability (two seconds) and I've got a failover-level setup... With Hyper-V and ESX doing this seems a lot more complicated, or is it just me? Many thanks, Chris

Hi all, I know this is kind of a virtualisation question, but since most of the S7000 users are in here I figured it was the best place to ask. I'm just about to do some benchmarking using our Sun 7410 and VMware with NFS. The iSCSI figures have been excellent so I'm hoping for good results with NFS, but I've never used it before so I'm a bit in the dark! I've made a new share on the 7410, set NFS as read/write (NFS is enabled and running), added some basic 'Domain Admins' permissions on the Root Directory, but left the Share Level permissions blank as it's not a CIFS share. When I try to add the NFS share in vSphere I give it the hostname, the export path and pick a datastore name, it gives me: Error during the configuration of the host: Cannot open volume: /vmfs/volumes/whatever I don't suppose anyone would be able to point me in the right direction, and also explain how NFS permissions work? With iSCSI I can set initiator security and CHAP, what stops any random user accessing my NFS share? Many thanks in advance, Chris

Hi guys, I've been using this forum for a while, and its great! This is the first time I've got round to posting something, but I hope to keep it up now. Basically, we were looking at virtual servers, and decided to implement a basic system over the summer. We are using the now-free VMware ESXi server, hosting a few Windows servers and a Linux LAMP server (the one on virtual appliances is v-easy to setup). I'm loving the VMware software, its all so easy, but the only thing I can't figure out how to do is backup the vmx's and vmdk's. We use Symantec Backup exec 12, and don't want to have to install an agent on each virtual machine (£200+ per machine, not fun!). Does anyone have any experience with this and can you advise please? Thanks in advance, David
