If I use LANSpeedtest against a network share I'm only getting 700mbps write and 350mbsp read. Thats 85 MB/s ish on the write. All switches are gigabit Cisco's going down shortish lengths (<50m) of CAT5e. All server NICs are at least duals mostly quads. Cient NICs are all gigabit. Why is it so slow ?

Hi We have now got our new backup server for our virtual and physical environment, we are using a mix of veeam and backup exec 2010. I am just in the process of setting it up and was after any suggestions for best performance speed, we have a tl2000 tape library hung of this via sas for archive. The Server has 24tb of raw storage in it and 1 x quad nic and 2 x onboard. Thanks in advance

Any help would be welcomed. We have two ms terminal servers 2003 and mix of clients, mostly Sunrays but some converted old machines that use MsRdp connections (no Citrix). Up until recently nobody bothered with the high end graphics programs but they are installed on the Ts machines. Now we've got a (rightly) keen ICT teacher who has the kids using Macromedia Fireworks and Flash. You will not be astonished to hear that this slows the performance of the Ts machines right down. Does anyone know of any way to improve the performance, or of a graphics program which will operates within Ts efficiently. From what I can see each use of Fireworks is taking it's own bit of the processor. Thanks in advance. Jay

Has anyone used an external company to film their school nativity performance? Our Head would like to record this year's performance with a view to letting parents purchase copies of it. Ideally it would be an arrangement with no financial risk to the school if we didn't sell enough copies.

Has anybody experimented with using Windows 10 on workstations yet? We're currently considering completely redoing the domain and upgrading to Windows Server 2016 and Windows 10. One of the issues we may face is that a fair portion of the workstations are over 5 years old, and run on Core 2 Duo (if I recall) processors. They currently run Windows 7...just about. Logging in takes a few minutes, and tasks such as opening SIMS/IE/Office takes half a minute or so. So I was wondering if anybody has any observations about the performance of Windows 10 on older hardware. Is the OS optimised in such cases, or will the workstations just run even slower? Is 'Tablet Mode' anything worth looking into? Also is logging in on a domain any faster than it is with Windows 7? Our users are constantly complaining that logging in takes forever; though we have found that replacing HDDs with SSDs massively improves the time it takes.

using local sims with full SQL.. I was wondering how fast it should be. 1000 pupils big.. it takes 2-3 seconds to get a list of pupils from the search and about 3-4 seconds to bring up their record.. Not bad, Not great. I was going through student records and it feels so much slower that the numbers show. any pro tips for making it faster? 8gb ram 4 cores of xeon 4110, full sql. 6gb database. on a dell raid 6 direct sas.

We've got about 6 Samsung N140 netbooks doing nowt. They have Win 7 on them but they're really sluggish and we need them to be faster- especially with today's demanding requirements for speed and efficiency. Anyone got any ideas what i could do to get them rocking?

Hiya, Just looking for some advice if I could please? I want to upgrade the current HDD, running my operating system on my Desktop PC, to an SSD. Now obviously I am looking at this upgrade to speed my PC up ... as running Windows 7 on an IDE drive (yes, I know) rus a bit sluggish. Now my question .... what other factors do I have to think about, if I'm looking at this upgrade from a speed point of view. Is the memory, CPU, etc going to counteract what I am doing, and therefore, me not see a difference? I cant tell you the exact specs of my machine, my memory isn't brilliant, and I'm only 18 ... but this is a rough guess ... : Core2Duo Processor (I'm pretty sure its an E6 model, so lets say its between 2GHz - 3 GHz, 1333MHz RAM (4 GB [3GB Usable 32Bit Operating System] DDR2 PC2-5300 @ 667MHz) Are there any other factors that I will have to think about, and with them specs do you think I will notice a difference in the speed of my operating system. Thanks in advance Tom

Hi, I have been looking into some SIMS Performance issues, i have tried a lot of obvious stuff but can't seem to get anywhere with it. it can take up to about 10 mins to log in and open a register. (the server performance is not too bad it takes about 1min to login and open a register) I have logged this with Capita but this is a prime example of a "Not our problem" case, therefore i am not expecting much assistance from them. So into the problems I have identified a bottleneck on the network which is causing issues on at least 4 machines, it can take up to 30mins to transfer 200mb of data to the effected machines. i have tested this numerous times with the same result each time, and the IT provider is aware of this. With that said i also know of 4 machines that are working exceptionally on the network with gigabit speeds, although these 4 machines are also reporting 10-15 mins to log in and open a register. I am wondering if the 4 machines effected by the bottleneck would have a detrimental effect on the other machines across the school? I'm not sure if there is an easy way for me to test this as i suspect in order to rule this out i would have to make sure the 4 slow machines are either turned off or not connected to the network. At this point i am just looking for suggestions on what i can try as i have tried just about everything i can think of and i'm at a loss, we have had issues like this before at other schools but we were never able to resolve the issues. Possible resolutions already tried Reindex patch Database diagnostics SQL memory usage is not restricted archive attendance marks shrinking log file Server Details: Virtual Windows server 2012 R2 SQL 2012 : 11.0.2100.60 Memory: 12GB Intel Xeon CPU E5-2620 @ 2.1GHz Plenty of Disk space This is an MIS server, so only SIMS and 3rd part apps are installed on it. I hope this makes sense and thanks in advance for any suggestions

Our Head of Performing Arts is looking for a new camcorder for filming performances for the Exam Board and for other filming purposes for Drama. Obviously you can get some pretty awesome camcorders these days for a reasonable figure, but I wondered if anyone could recommend any in particular. He doesn't really have a particular budget in mind (other than it being less then £1000) but I would be interested if anyone could recommend anything in £250-£350 price range, but also options for the £600 kind of price range. Specific requirements he would like are: Easy to transfer from Camera to computer Easy to browse through recorded videos when using the actual camera (i.e the ability to quickly view things recorded from a week before) Allow the usage of an External Microphone - sometimes he films outside, so a external mic may be useful to allow for windshield etc Hope someone has some suggestions I've been having a look through review sites as well, and have a couple in mind, but thought I'd see what other people suggested.

We've just replaced our aging Quantum LTO1 Valueloader with a bit more capacious Quantum LTO3 Superloader 3 - but performance under Backup Exec 12 on a Windows 2008 server seems, well, pants- to put not too fine a point on it! With the old valueloader on the same server, we were seeing data transfer rates over 500Mb/min - but with the new Superloader 3, we're getting only 5Mb/min! It starts off around the 600Mb/min mark, then plummets steadily and quickly in the first few minutes of the job until it bottoms out around 5Mb/min. A recent 800Mb test job (backing up the program files folder from the media server itself, to rule out any agent issues) took nearly 3 hours to complete! Obviously this isn't great when trying to back up nearly a terabyte of data overnight - it just isn't going to happen. I've checked and confirmed SCSI connections - it's on an Adaptec 29160LP adaptor: not the newest HBA, but it worked fine with the other one. Changed cables, changed terminators. Still the same. We've even gone to the extremes of completely reinstalling the server to ensure any old drivers from the original Valueloader have been well and truly removed from the environment. No change. We're using the Quantum driver for the autoloader mechanism, and the Symantec driver for the tape drive. Autoloader operations complete fine and in a timely manner suggesting the quantum driver is OK. We've updated the Symantec drivers using a hotfix from their website, and applied SP3 for Backup Exec 12, still no change. We're using brand new Sony LTO3 media throughout. Given Backup Exec will use a network folder as a target for backup, and record throuput in the region of 300Mb / min when it does so, we're comfortable that it's not an agent issue pulling files from machines, or that the software itself is rubbish. It seems confined to this autoloader - which suggests SCSI, driver, or physical device issue. However we've been on to Quantum, who have inspected the device logs and had us run some test software against the device only to find no fault. Under the test software, it is returning the expected data transfer rates and they're insisting the device is working fine - it must be something else. Any suggestions? I think there can only be a config problem left - but I'm beating my head against a brick wall over what it could be as I've spent so long staring at it without success! Seeing woods for trees, and all that. I can see that I'm going to have to buy in another SCSI HBA just so I can do some swap-out testing, or even upgrade to Backup Exec 12.5 to rule out 12, but I'd rather not spend precious wodges of my budgets if I can avoid it! Thanks in advance! Jim
