Hello everyone, I was wondering if someone can help, we currently have a mix of Windows 7 computers and some new Surface 3s running Windows 10. For the last few years we have used mandatory profiles on windows 7 which has worked well. However with the new Surfaces running Windows 10 I have created a new .v5 profile which works however the default apps such camera don't seem to work. Has anyone got them working or knows of a way to get them working. Let me know if you need anymore information? Kind Regards

Hi, Does anyone know where I might get hold of a Windows Movie Maker MSI installer for Windows 7? If not, what are the best practices for deploying it? Thanks in advance! Andy

I am running Windows 7 Workstations and Windows Server 2016 Datacenter Domain Controller. I am using group policy to manage printers on my workstations. When I push out these policies it will apply to most of the PCs in a classroom but not all. I have had this issue with multiple group policies in the past and can never workout why they aren't applying. As far as I can see there is no pattern, it is never the same PCs that policies dont apply. Does anyone know any reasons why policies wouldn't apply. James Taylor ICT Technician

Hi, I am using MDT 2012 on a 2008R2 Server. Have been trying to build a laptop via a Task Sequence that I havent tweaked in any way since I created it a long time ago and it is still building a week later (admittedly I am only at the school half a day per week). It was takings its time installing Windows Updates so I have removed the two steps from the Task Sequence. Are there any other steps that get added in as standard that I can remove to speed up the deployment process?

We are trying to set the proxy in IE 11 on Windows 7 and having problems with every method we've tried. Group policy preferences doesn't work, the registry method doesn't work when a user logs on but if gpupdate is run the settings are applied, we tried putting the regkeys into a logon script but they don't always apply either. We have tried different types of accounts (roaming and mandatory) and still have problems. We've even created an OU with no other GPO's in other than the proxy registry policy and added an one account and one PC but it still doesn't apply. Adding a fake regkey in the same policy works, is there anything else that we've not looked at.

When using my laptop on domain, everything is tickety-boo. Go home and log in and no desktop background, no shortcuts working on taskbar or on Start Menu. And MS Outlook will not open. Any ideas on what I have wrong with roaming profiles? All laptops are the same so it is not a CSC issue (I think). Windows XP has none of these issues. Only my W7 machines. As I am entirely phasing out XP, I need a solution. Any ideas? Anyone? Did not set up this domain environment but, Folder redirection and roaming profiles look in place. Thanks in advance.

Hi, I just got a new ASUS Laptop that's running Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium. I installed steam with no issues, but whenever i try to login Steam stops responding. At first it would not go past the login screen, but after switching to Windows Vista Compatibility mode, it now goes to the "connecting to account: accountname" screen and then stops responding. It now goes this far no matter what mode it is in. I downloaded the latest video card drivers and 1 set of windows updates and am waiting on a second set (only a 128kbps connection avaliable here). I also tried re-installing steam. Any ideas on what i should do? Laptop Specs: Processor: Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor Speed: 2.53GHz System Memory (RAM): 6GB Type of Memory (RAM): DDR2 Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M Video Memory: 1GB GDDR3 VRAM Operating System Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit

As title, we're experimenting with the Windows Live version of Movie Maker because Microsoft saw fit to remove it from Windows 7 and we have a number of lesson plans that incorporate it. Although Movie Maker itself seems to work fine, it stubbornly refuses to add content from a network location. That's going to be a big problem for us, and many other schools I suspect - we don't just give students or staff access to the local disk or a writable desktop folder to dump stuff into - can anyone else confirm this failure to add from a network location is indeed normal behaviour for the new version of Movie Maker and not just me having a moment? Ta!

Hi all I'm gonna to scream in a minute but i cant quite fathom whats occurin' with this one. Difficult to explain this one without giving some insight as to what we have setup so here we go: With our computer replacement scheme, and some long hours by me, we've got a Windows 7 deployment system setup, along with a DFS Storage Share where the win7 roaming profiles and redirected folders point to (which as far as i can see / tested / used, is working a treat). However, user naturally have to use shared documents on older storage systems - think the big old EMC Celera's type NAS systems - as this is a gradual process at the moment. We've discovered, quite annoyingly, that users are getting a very strange issue when they access files on shared documents of these other storage systems that arent the roaming profile store. For example, Word 2010 seems to create a .tmp file when the user uses a document from this shared area (permissions shouldnt be a problem as on this particular folder on this share, as 'Everyone' is set with Full Control), he's able to edit the document as normal, but when he saves it, it doesnt save it in the UNC path, although transparent to the user, it has, but it seems to have only saved it in the user's cache on his machine, and this .tmp file gets left in the UNC location. Seemingly, this is Windows automatically caching files that the user uses on the network, however, I dont recall asking windows to do this, so is this "by design" and is there a way to turn it off so that only the roaming profile / redirected folders does it, and not every file on a share that the user connects with? To note, I did try using the GPO setting "Prohibit 'Make Availabe Offline' for these files and folders" and removing the CSC etc etc, which after sorting out the users' profile, didnt seem to have the files re-cache, and I was hoping that this would help prevent it from happening but no dice unfortunately As the description of that GP setting shows, it seems very much a GUI / prevent users from manually choosing to do it etc. Cant seem to find any [obvious] setting to prevent windows from doing this.... just wondered if anyone has any ideas on this as this obviously is pretty rubbish and delaying me from finalising our new deployment of win7 etc, along with the few users that are piloting it at the moment. Many thanks for anyone that can help with this one or has ideas on it Nath.

Hi, I have windows 7 setup to use mandatory profiles for students which run off a network share. It works OK but isn't as easy to manage as xp was e.g. I have installed Photoshop elements and premiere elements and want the acceptance agreement that shows each time a user uses it to go away. In xp I would set the load the program and setup the desktop as wanted then copy the profile to the share and make it mandatory. I can't do this in 7 because the copy button is now disabled. I tried making a profile using sysprep but ended up breaking a machine trying. I fixed a similar problem with office using a showoptin key. Does anyone know the regkey for pse and pre that stop the acceptance agreement? Or is there a better way to achieve what I'm after? Thanks

I use the evil technology that is offline files on staff laptops. One of my users did some work offline over the summer and these files just flat out refuse to synchronise. Another user suffered a similar problem on Windows XP and I simply used CSCCMD 1.1 to extract the un-synchronised files and copied them. I'm guessing a similar fix woould work here but the CSCCMD tool doesn't work on Windows 7 (or Vista for that matter) so I'm a bit stuck. How do I extract these files from the offline files cache???

Hello all, I have a strange strange problem that I can't find a solution to on the internet. We have just setup a new 2008 domain, all member servers are 2k8. All client machines are win7. However, all clients are registering a forward lookup, but nothing for the reverse. DHCP is set to Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records and to discard when lease is deleted. As a test, I have set group policy to tell the clients to manually register their PTR in computer configuration > Administrative templates > Network > DNS Client > Register PTR Record but this hasn't worked either. In the (A) record, Update associated pointer is ticked. There is also nothing in the DNS event logs, so I am at a loss as to what could be causing this issue. Has anyone had experience of this issue?

I'm in the process of locking down Windows 7 for our students and have hit a snag... I'm trying to allow them to search from the start menu but it doesn't find anything because we have hidden and disabled access to the c: drive via gpo. If i remove the "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" setting then they can search but it is then possible for them to browse the c: drive when opening/saving a file. It's still hidden in My Computer because of the "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" setting. Is there any way i can allow them to search (just needs the start menu folder(s)) but not leave it open so that they can see the drive through other ways? Thanks in advance

I do like a number of the improvements and fixes that have been included into the RC but have to say that the speed has definitely gone down hill from the beta. The test box that I have running it is slower running the W7 RC than it is with Vista. It may just be specific to the system and to do with drivers or something but it is not encouraging. I even get mouse stalls where the mouse stops moving for short periods of time when the system is doing something challanging - like changing to a resize cursor at the edge of a window . I had none of these issues with the original beta so I hope that this kind of nonscence is ironed out before release or at least only affects a very few machines. The system if kind of old but should cope, its lowst rateing is a 3 so I kind of expect more from it. I do like the maths entry program though, that looks very useful for entering formulas and the like.

Dear All I apologise if this is a repeated post but I have had a quick search and cannot find anything. I am really concerned that if a user locks there computer there is no way of logging them off at the console like you could in XP. Does anyone have a fix for this? I know I could use psexec but to be honest if a teacher locks a workstation leaves it and then someone else needs to unlock it, it would be much easier for them to do it themselves. Any thoughts on this bug gratefully excepted.

Hi Guys, I'm looking for suggestions for things I may have missed here: One of the schools I look after recently purchased 105 HP Mini 210-1001SA laptops (1 per child in Y3/4/5). I've created a W7Pro WDS image, and applied it to each one of the laptops, and they've all worked fine apart from 6 or 7 which have been causing me major headaches with their wireless connectivity - they'll either connect for half an hour or so then drop the connection,or they'll report that no wireless connections are available. Other laptops in the same location report the school WLAN and a couple in houses nearby, even when those 6 or 7 stop. So far, I've done: Swap Cards between duffers and Known Good Laptops - still N/G Reinstalled Drivers - still n/g Reinstalled Windows - still n/g Disabled all Power Management - still n/g Upgraded BIOS on laptops - still n/g Upgraded firmware on WAP - still n/g Tried different WAP - still n/g Networking works fine if I plug in a cable, and the affected laptops can use a USB wifi dongle OK. I'm thinking if I put *nix on a pendrive and see if they work that way it might prove it's the cards. Any suggestions gratefully received, particularly as to where I can buy the cards from as HP's response is "Oh, you've put your own OS on? Well, your warranty is void then..." and to put the phone down on you! Guess I won't be buying any more kit from them, so suggestions as to nice netbooks, desktops and servers as well please! Cheers, Rob

Hi, I have a windows 7 image on my system deployed via litetouch and MDT, it works fine on some pc's but on others it installs but then after the 1st proper reboot it comes up as trying to login and its relevant failure. The account it is trying to use is domain\administrator which doesnt exist and has not been set during the install process, Can anyone spread some light on where this may be coming from so i can set things to get the install working correctly. Many thanks

I've been having a specific problem on Windows 7 clients on our Server 2003 evironment. We have been testing Windows 7, and building a profile to work with it (all of our clients are on XP...but new systems will come with Windows 7). The profiles are all working, except when it comes to printers. We have a vbs script which runs on logon, checks where the user is logged on, and assigns (and defaults) the correct printer for that room. It also deletes printers on log off. On Windows XP, this work flawlessly. However, coming to Windows 7 we encounter massive delays on logon times, caused by this: "Do you trust this printer? Windows needs to download and install a software driver from the \\%servername% computer to print from %printername%. Proceed only if you trust the \\%servername% computer and the network." The vbs scripts run sliently in the background, so the user cannot see this message to click Install driver, so it waits for it to time out and default to Cancel, and then it doesn't install the printer. I have been researching this for a couple of days now, and I can't figure it out. I have tried using group policy for "Point and Print", allowing it in the forest and/or specified trusted servers, but that didn't work. Also tried using another Windows 7 machine to use GPO Management to disable warning messages, and that didn't work either. The messages still appear. Any ideas?

We are having an intermittent problem with the user profile service on Windows 7 machines. The message "The User Profile Service failed the logon. User profile cannot be loaded." is appearing on seemingly random machines (around 10% of all machines daily, and not the same ones). The problem started a few days ago, after 4 months of successful Windows 7 use. The only note worthy change to the network was turning on scavenging on some of our DNS zones (the action was subsequently rolled back). When investigating the event log of the machine the only notable error in the logs was a Distributed Com Error (EventID 10016) with the following text: The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Launch permission for the COM Server application with CLSID {24FF4FDC-1D9F-4195-8C79-0DA39248FF48} and APPID {B292921D-AF50-400C-9B75-0C57A7F29BA1} to the user NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM SID (S-1-5-18) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool. This appears to be referring to the NAP service, but I haven't been able to identify any correlation between the two. We have found that repeated re-boots will eventually allow the machines to login. We have also found some of the machines do not have matching forward and reverse lookup DNS entries, and when these are edited to match and the machine reboot it will start working, but neither is a permanent fix, as some of the machines we have done this to are repeating the problem later. Oh, before the question comes up, we are working with Roaming profiles with folder redirection. Can anyone suggest anything? Our staff and students are losing patience, and we are running out of ideas.

Hi, my RM Slate has just arrived, and for the most part, I'm loving it. I upgraded it to to W7Pro and joined it to the domain, but now I need to put my password in to login. The problem wit this is that when I resume from standby, the on-screen keyboard does not appear automatically, and I have to click the ease-of-access button, uncheck the on-screen keyboard option, recheck it and click OK for it to appear. This is a pain, and makes logging on quite a bit longer than it would otherwise. Has anyone else had this problem, and if you have a Slate or other Win7 tablet device, could you try using a passworded account and see if you get the same issue? Thanks, David

A nice security flaw in Windows 7 that I wondered if anyone else has fixed, as I can't find an elegant solution. Student logs in, right clicks in My Documents - New - Shortcut, types in C:\ and there you go, complete access to the C:\ Drive. This is despite having a GPO that is meant to restrict access to C: (How To Restrict Access To Drives In My Computer In Windows - How-To Geek). I could prevent users from creating shortcuts (I think) however it is a mandatory part of the OCR or Cambridge Nationals ICT course, and would probably cause more trouble than it's worth. I'm loathe to change permissions on the C: drive as that tends to cause a lot of issues, and changing permissions on C:\Windows (the main folder I want to protect) appears to be a big no no. Any other ideas?
