When using my laptop on domain, everything is tickety-boo. Go home and log in and no desktop background, no shortcuts working on taskbar or on Start Menu. And MS Outlook will not open. Any ideas on what I have wrong with roaming profiles? All laptops are the same so it is not a CSC issue (I think). Windows XP has none of these issues. Only my W7 machines. As I am entirely phasing out XP, I need a solution. Any ideas? Anyone? Did not set up this domain environment but, Folder redirection and roaming profiles look in place. Thanks in advance.

I have been having some problems (lots) with a pair of mirrored disks. These hold our user folders. I replaced one of the disks, and still have a few messages "at risk" etc. Is there an easy way I can copy off the information and user shares etc to another set of mirrored disks? (It is hard to get non-Advanced Format disks now, I would like to be able to set up on two new Advanced Format disks. The current mirror is of course a dynamic volume which doesn't make things any easier.

Hi, I've been given the task of rolling out Active Directory and Server 2008 across our multiple education sites. These are small Adult Education centres. At the moment, these use a minimum of network resources. We have a Win 2008 server at on site which hosts the shared folders and does the backups. At the same site, I'll be introducing a AD server. However this will create a single point of failure. Loosing connection to this site means that all the remote sites will loose their ability to contact the Domain Controller. So I want to put in at least one, maybe two secondary DCs at the various sites. However we don't have money for any extra servers...... So. The Million Dollar Question is, is there any reason why I couldn't install Win SErver 2008 on an ordinary PC and use that as a backup DC? The minimum spec is certainly fine. But anyother reason why not? I'd value your thoughts. Thanks for your help!

I got bored today so converted the old adm files that shutdownertron uses to the new admx format. Copy the contents of the zip file to your \\server\sysvol\domain.com\policies\policydefinitions folder. You should get shutdownertron in the list of admin templates by itself and no longer under classic templates Apologies if this has already been done by someone else but I could find it in a search Shutdownertron-admx-1.3.3214.zip

We have Sanako Study 1200 and are starting to use more adn more of the functions. There is an option for the teacher to collect the files the students are working on. For this I understand that there needs to be a share on the network where students have write permissions. To minimise abuse I'm going to make it a hidden share but I'd also like to stop them listing the files/reading files from the share so they don't start dumping thousands of mp3s in there to share. Does anyone have any ideas on this? My thoughts are to give them read permissions and write but not read and execute or list folder contents. The client is set to save files to a UNC path set in the tutor software on the tutors PC. Teachers then copy these files out. To keep it tidy I could wipe the data out every night. Any ideas? Anyone done anything like this? ChrisJ

Hello, I've just installed Windows 7 64-bit and applied all updates (took me an eternity) including SP1. Joined it to our domain using the Network ID wizard. Restarted. Computer boots up and is joined to domain. Computer appears in our All Computers OU properly named. I log on and all drives are mapped... ...but when i run a gpupdate /force from the command line it tells me: The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows could not resolve the computer name. This could be caused by one of more of the following: a) Name resolution failure on the current Domain controller b) Active Directory Replication Latency (an account created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current Domain controller) We don't have another domain controller. Does anyone know why the Computer Configuration settings from Group Policy aren't being applied? It's applying the User Config settings... We are running 2008 R2 as our Domain Controller

As you may know (if you've been following my posts) that over the summer we switched to a 2k8 Domain/DCs. In a continuation of that migration we are in the process of building a w2k8 print server on our VMware box. Prior to this we used Ric's Printer Scripts to install and deploy printers on a per user basis. However we are interested in using the new GPO functionality to deploy printers on a per user/machine basis. I am already aware of the fact that this method of printer deployment isn't suitable for thin clients. We plan on retaining Ric's Printer Scripts for our Citrix infrastructure. So my question is, has anyone done this? Are there any pitfalls I should know about?

Hi I was wondering if anyone was backing hyper-v up and if they have any solutions to do it. I currently run manualish backups on the server using windows server backup but we really need a full solution that does not cost the earth. I am looking at Backup exec but the hyper-v agent is £1000 per server and we would need to 2 as we run a cluster. Anyone got any solutions they are using? Cheers

Hi I work in a school and we have two networks curriculum domain and the admin domain. Untill today i've been able to just add the admin users to curriculum folder permission to allow them access. I've come back from holiday and admin staff no longer have access. I checked the sharing a security and instead of it saying "admin 13" it just has unknown account followed by the SID, I am however able to remote into the curriculum server from an admin machine. Is this an easy one to sort out? The curriculum server is running 2003 and the admin is running 2008 if that would make any difference. Any help would be great

Hi All, Currently I'm backing up a small server using Windows Server Backup, it creates a VHD for each partition and I can mount each one in Windows 7 Pro if I need to restore a file, happy days I'm wondering if I can use those VHD's to create a Virtual Machine of the server running on a Windows 7 Pro host? So far I've tried to create a virtual machine, adding each VHD as a hard disk in VirtualPC settings but I keep getting "Insert suitable media" messages Any help gratefully received

Hi guys, I've got a fault in a school that I've posted over on serverfault but not getting very far: Terminal server logs off users after 5 minutes - Server Fault Perhaps some of you have come across the problem already. The basics are that we have mixed 2003 and 2008 terminal servers. The 2003 servers are fine, but 2008 always kick off users after 5 minutes. We have removed mandatory profiles in case the v2 profiles were at the root of it, but also it gave quicker logons. I originally thought that this happened for staff only, but we've since found a domain admin with the same problem. Here is how the sessions look while a staff member is logging on: No "errors" as such, just information that the user is being logged off. No event log events created on the host at all. Anyone here had a similar problem? Thanks

I have Web Server 2008 running as a VM on VMWare. I've entered the MAK key and when I try to activate it, the Windows Activation gives me the error code 0x8004FE2F. The event log shows Security-Licensing-SLC event ID 8200: License acquisition failure details. hr=0x8004FE2F and:- Security-Licensing-SLC event ID 1008: Acquisition of Secure Processor Certificate failed. hr=0x8004FE2F Googling doesn't turn up much, apart from setting the proxy details manually in IE, which I've done. We don't have KMS. The only other option is to try phoning MS, but that's an ordeal. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hey again, Weird issue - never seen this before. I have an HP color laserjet 1500L networked via an external jetdirect card (175X model I believe). When I go to add the printer on my server 2008 box in printer management, and load the driver for the printer, I get the following: (from mmc.exe) function addrss 0x1000b994 caused a prot. fault excep code 0xc0000005 some or all property pages may not be displayed Thinking it was a corrupt driver, I redownloaded and reinstalled - no luck. Tried downloading the universal PCL 6 driver - it loads in fine, but does not actually print anything to the printer. Using the correct 1500L throws the error whenever you open the property page for the printer, on the server, and also does not print. I'm thinking it may be an issue with the driver (which is dated 2003) and with server 2008. But I can't be the only other person using these....any ideas? Thanks as always!

We have a DFS share replicated over two servers, just recently we have noticed that folders in which Word or Excel files are stored are beginning to fill up with TMP files all with random 8-digit names, 3B0EE95E.tmp. These files are present on both servers so do appear to be replicated over, but where are they coming from? Does anyone have any suggestions? They never get deleted, so just build up. My theory is that when an Office file is edited, it creates it's TMP file, which is replicated across to the other server. When Office is closed, the TMP on the original server gets deleted, but then the other server replicates its own one back across. I'm very new to DFS, but does this sound feasible?

Anybody else having issues with the Microsoft provided HP Laserjet PCL 5 drivers? I just spun up a new 2008 print server in a VM and created the ques by hand (old print server was borked, so using the migration tool was not an option). Everything seems to work fine, but I've started getting some complaints from my users. Apparently they can print, but only one copy at a time. If they submit a job to the printer, and specify two or more copies, only the first will print. There are no errors in the print que when finished, and this only effects HP printers using the MS PCL 5 driver. After digging around, I found that it's a feature called Mopier Mode that is causing this. If the printer has sufficient memory to store the entire print job, only one copy will be sent to the printer to cut down on network traffic. It sounds like a good idea in theory, but the problem is the printer's installed options are being detected incorrectly. When the printer is added, the installed memory is reported as 128MB, a printer hard disk and duplex unit are listed as being installed, and it believes there is nine paper trays. The vast majority of these printers are Laserjet 1200 and 1300 series printers, and they all have 8MB of RAM. To make matters more interesting, the smallest amount of memory you can specify is 128MB. Color Laserjet 4600s are also effected, but there is a PCL6 driver available for those printers. When switching over to it the installed options are detected correctly, and Mopier Mode is turned off by default. So everything is peachy with PCL6. Problem is, there is no PCL6 capable driver for the 1200/1300 lasers for Windows 7/2008 Server from MS. The only option is the universal print driver from HP, and I've had nothing but issues with that. That is why I'm on an MS only provided driver kick. So my short term solution is to disabled Mopier Mode on all the 1200/1300 printers. It fixes the issue, but I'd like to fix the underlying cause of the installed printer options being misreported. Anyone else been down this road?

Good morning everyone, We have a Server 2008 Terminal Services server in place in our server room that serves SOLELY as a TS server. Since it has been set up, it simply hasn't worked correctly at all. I'm turning to Edugeek to see if anyone has any configuration suggestions to get this server behaving properly. The main issues, are that drives simply decide not to map (seemingly randomly) and IE8 point blank REFUSES to inherit the correct proxy settings that all the other computers on site use perfectly. One student can log in and all the net settings are correct, and another student can log in at the same time and gets nothing. Once the server has been restarted, we see a decrease in these issues until the following day, where everything goes to pot again. At the moment, the server sits in Active Directory in the same OU as other computers. All the other computers in that OU work totally fine. It's almost as if the server is totally ignoring the policies. Now I have had very little involvement in the delployment of this Server as it was done by by ex-boss who is "no longer an employee of the school". Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this Server refuses to play ball? Are there any other considerations that need to be taken with Server 2008 serving as a TS server? Has anyone else ever implemented Server 2008 as a TS server? I would love to hear some constructive ideas. Many thanks, Sven.

Hi all, We've recently started to use WSUS to its full extent and are assigning updates to all our Windows Client PCs/Servers from it. Updates go through a testing program (usually inside VMs) before deployment to the clients/servers to make sure we have no problems. All the XP/7 Desktops/Notebooks are working great however our Windows 2008 DCs (at least this only appears to be affecting DCs) don't install updates on the programed schedule. Looking in the event log of a server (non DC (also R2 not R1)) that is installing updates correctlyI see the message- Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. This computer is currently scheduled to install these updates on 11 November 2010 at 03:00: - Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - November 2010 (KB890830) Looking in the event log of a DC that is not installing updates automatically I see the message- Installation Ready: The following updates are downloaded and ready for installation. To install the updates, an administrator should log on to this computer and Windows will prompt with further instructions: - Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool x64 - November 2010 (KB890830) Both servers are a member of the same OU with the same GPO applied to them to install all updates on every Friday at 3AM, the only thing that I can figure out that is different is those that aren’t installing are 2008 R1 with AD installed and those that are are running R2 and don’t have AD installed. Any clues on what to do next would be greatly received

Hi all, I am trying to deploy a printer (starting with just one) to a group of PCs in a computer lab. For the moment I have taken one PC to the server room and set it up with a test name. I have created an OU and added the PC into it. I should say its a Windows XP client with SP3 installed To deploy the printer I have installed it on the server (server 2008) and I have added the x86 drivers under the "additional drivers" button. I then deployed the printer through print management and created a group policy object. I have linked the group policy object to the OU containing the test PC. I have set the Point and Print Restrictions so that its enabled but I have not ticked either option and set all warnings to hidden. When I reboot the client PC it does not have the printer installed. When I do a GP result it shows that it is in the correct OU and that the printer group policy oibject is associated with this test PC. My question...what have I missed. The theory of deploying printers through Group Policy sounds perfect for our needs in the school and seems reasonably easy to implement but I'm getting nothing. I'm hoping its just something I've missed, some step or option I haven't ticked? This is my first entry into Group Policy and any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Hi all, I am wondering if somebody can help me with this, here we have a two domain network, controlled by one DHCP Server. We have a Staff Domain and a Student Domain. With Windows XP we can push out the DNS Settings via Group Policy whereas Windows 7 we cannot. Has anyone came up with a solution for this as I am working on a disaster recovery network and would like to be able to push out the DNS Settings through GPO or a startup script. Thanks, Louis

Hello there. What I'm going to try and explain now may be very vague, but I just want to see if anyone else has had the same issue as me, so here goes! We have a Server 2008 Standard server. Installed on the server is Forefront TMG. I have configured a web chain out to a proxy the entire site uses provided by our local council. I have added all the rules into the firewall that we need as a school, and the net connection works exactly how I would expect it to. The issue I have, is that when any changes are made to any aspect of networking on the server, I get a BSOD telling me that fweng.sys is the problem (I don't have dump log to hand, but I can get it if anyone thinks they might be onto something.) The server can run in a stable fashion if the following is done: Disconnect internal and external interfaces from server Turn on server and leave to boot into Windows Log on and leave to settle reconnect network cables one at a time Check that internal shares can be reached Check that external websites can be reached Log off Once it's up and running, it serves the whole site perfectly until you try to make any changes to it. I can log onto the server and use it in any fashion I wish. So long as I don't try to make any changes in Forefront or adjust any network settings, I can be sure it won't "fall over" again. Obviously this is no good for us, as we are unable to do anything to this server in it's current state. We have disabled the internal network card, and have added an HP Broadcomm adapter in it's place. All drivers have been updated and we have attempted to run Windows update. When Windows update is run, we get a BSOD and the same error message about fweng.sys (which I believe is the Firewall Engine). We have NOT updated the firmware on the network cards, but we will be doing so over half term. Basically, I was wondering if anyone has come across an issue like this. Idea's and suggestions are very welcome.

Currently setup a new moodle test site (Linux – SME Server 8). To try and get moodle to authenticate against Active Directory. I have used Softerra LDAP Browser 2.6 to try and get the correct LDAP setting in place. I believe I now have correct LDAP setting in place. As in with LDAP settings it does not error out with message like: LDAP-module cannot connect to any servers: Server: 'ldap://10.107.16.2' Connection: 'Resource id #49' Bind result: '' However every time I try logging in with AD user. I get the following message. "Invalid login, please try again" Running Server 2008 for AD I was wondering whether anyone knows of a simple fix to get this to work correctly. Settings are as followed for: Distinguished Name: CN=LDP USER,OU=Accounts,DC=curric,DC=local User type = MS AD Contexts: OU=Intake 10,OU=Students,OU=Accounts,DC=curric,DC=local Search subcontexts = Yes
