We use Symantec Endpoint Protection 12 at our school district. Any recommendations on installing the SEP Client to my SCCM 2012 R2 primary server and distribution points? I am very fearful of causing issues in doing so. What types of Antivirus are being used by others on there SCCM servers and did it entail configuring the Antivirus client for SCCM exceptions, etc...? Thank You for any help!

Hi all, Just wondered if anyone has come across this issue before? We currently use Exec 2012 to backup our servers and we seem to be having an issue when incremental/differential backups are taken. (Physical Server backups are working perfect) We have a virtual machine and when the full backup is taken its backs up everything like it should however when it does an incremental/differential backup (Tried both) it seems to have the same file size as the full backup. I have checked the physical machine which holds the virtual machines and it has the agent for windows installed. Myself and my college can't seem to figure out how to solve it... Any help apprenticed.

Hello everyone, After using RM CC3 with Windows 2003 and XP for the last 14 years, we are now about the start building a brand new network! Applause!!!! We are awaiting licences for Windows Server 2012 R2, and will be building the virtual server/s very soon. We cannot start the big change over until the summer (which gives us 5 weeks to install the network, change over PC's to Win7 about 210, 80 of these will be brand new) but some things we can get started with. One thing we want to get done now are the Group Policies, we obviously have our current ones for 2003 and XP (Not sure if I could export these to 2012) which may not include some policy settings but does anyone know where you can get pre-configured GPO's for schools/education from Microsoft or similar for Windows 7? We have decided not to go for Windows 8 just yet! I have started to create my own, but I am unsure for some settings and would like to at least compare my own to someone else's as I go along as this is the first time I have ever done anything like this. Ideally if Microsoft provide one that is pre-configured for schools that does the basics to stop the students changing settings etc that you can tweak to your own need that would be awesome. Any help would be greatly received.

EduGeek I have an urgent request for assistance with my Server 2012 domain controller. I have 2 DC’s, both HP DL380 (Latest model) DC1- Hold all the FSMO roles and hosts a couple of hyper-v virtual servers. We had an issue with Sophos not functioning / Sophos services not starting Sophos advised to restart the server, and then remove Sophos. I restarted the server and it now fails to boot and hangs on applying computer settings. I have restarted and try booting into safemode without joy. The DC is currently hung in safe mode boot with the message “failure configuring windows features reverting changes, do not turn off your computer” and the little circle wheel spinning round. This has been like this for about two hours. Can anyone give me some advice / ideas ? Thankyou

I can't find Hyper-V Server 2012 standalone download anywhere, despite lots of references saying it's been available for a few months. Download.microsoft.com only has docs for Hyper-V 2012, but not the ISO. Am I being dim? Thanks.

Hi, My DC running Server 2008R2 has crashed big time! The disc, which was in RAID mirror mode, is unbootable. However, I can remove the disc and access all the files. I have a "bare metal" backup but this won't restore. The server is flaky even if I re-install a clean copy of Server 2008R2, so I suspect a hardware fault. I have ordered a new server but if the backup doesn't work (I suspect it is corrupt) then I have no option but to start from scratch. I am inclined to install Server 2012R2 in this case, but is there any way of extracting the data/info for DHCP, DNS, AD & GPO from the old 2008 (non-bootable) disc? Or do I have to accept that I need to start from scratch and re-build the GPOs, AD and DHCP? The school have been without their data for 3 days now :-( Dave

Hi, over summer we installed SCCM 2012 and have been using Software Deployment to for our Xen Farm. This is working well and was thinking about using it instead of Group Policy, how do you do it? Do you use Group Policy or SCCM Software Deployment? Thanks!

Hi, Not sure if this is the correct forum, but I am tearing my hair out with something that should be fairly straightforward. I have 32 new laptops which I need to set up with a whole load of software. Normally, I would set up one of them as a reference machine and use WDS to capture an image and then use answerfiles to deploy that image to the other laptops. However, this time I thought I'd try creating a VM to create the image from, so I used a Win8.1 64bit PC to run Hyper-V and I created a Win 8.1 64bit VM. I loaded all my software, updated Windows and sysprep'd the VM (well, to be honest, I accidentally sysprep'd the physical PC on the first attempt...doh!). Now had I realised about the differences between Hyper-V Gen1 and Gen2 at the time, I might have opted for Gen1 but I created a Gen2 VM. Of course, there is no need for a legacy Network Adapter so I created a Network Adapter, assigned it to my NIC and set it to be the first boot option. Sure enough, as I turned on the VM it started to boot from the network and the screen messages showed that it had received an IP address and was downloading the file wdsmgfw.efi file (downloading NBP file...) but it failed after a few minutes with a PXE-E18: Server Response Timeout. I have spent 2 days googling a solution but nothing seems to work. I have read about EUFI, option 66,67 and all sorts of other things but nothing makes sny difference. Before I give up and rebuild a physical laptop has anyone any idea what I have done wrong?? I should add that physical machines all boot to PXE with no problems. I also created a boot image and a capture image from a the same Win8.1 ISO that I used to create the VM. Any suggestions very welcome! Thanks Dave

Hi All, I've decided to deploy windows via a task sequence that installs the OS, then all the updates, followed by software. Using a default Win 8.1 disk image as a base, there's 200+ updates to get through for each deployment, taking total deployment time to 5.5 hours per client! This is just too slow... Is anyone aware of a way to bundle those updates into the image or another way of speeding up the process? My searches haven't turned up anything unfortunately. I'd prefer to stick with the base image if possible, though injecting the updates into it is fine (if possible). I'd like to avoid deploying, updating, and capturing a new base image. Thanks all!

Hey guys, I am trying to install WSUS onto a 2012 R2 server, but when i install, it always fails, and comes up saying "The operation cannot be completed, because the server you specified requires a restart". I have restarted the server several times, and have done all windows updates. Google hasn't seem to have given me much help. Any ideas? Regards Harry

OK... LOADS of info on the web for how to configure this but I have one tiny question that I can not find the answer to... For bare metal deployment you need a server running WDS. Simple enough... until you realise that you only want to use WDS for Virtual Machine Manager (VMM). I want to know if the VMM server can also act as the WDS server - i.e. both roles on the same server. Without finding time to test it, I don't know if it works but I see no reason for it not to. Has anybody tried this or does anyone know if this is a supported configuration?

Hello all, We recently installed System Center 2012 Config Manager to one of our ESX Hosts, with the hope that during our switchover to Win7 in the near future it will take the place of Classlink7 and Sophos. Now, its all running fine. The AD Schema extension went without a hitch (apart from the "I cant look" moment as I hit enter to run it), which may seem helpful to those on the borderline of running the ExtADSch.exe included with SCCM. Now, to business. The client's wont deploy. Either via Push from the Configuration console, or via manual install from the network share. I think it would be easier to list what I have done instead of trying stuff i've done already. - Push does not work. I have added the domain admin in the DCOM configuration for remote launching & access. No joy. - Client installs over network share if done manually, but System Center does not pick it up. The logs yield something about its failiure to register with the system. I can try and post some of the offending log tomorrow. - All MS' TechNet setup guides and checklists have been followed to the word.

Hey Everyone, I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure this problem out as I just can't seem to find the right solution to my problem. So, here's the basic info: - I have setup an SCCM 2012 Server with all of my boundaries (using IP ranges) and boundary groups set. - When I deploy an Application (in this case, I'm trying to deploy a small MSI), it seems to work OK on desktop machines that are hard wired into the network, but when I check the install on a teacher's laptop, it keeps saying that it is downloading, but never moves past 0%. To make matters even more confusing, it does seem to work on a couple machines here or there (for Example, when I deployed my MSI to 127 teacher machines, it installed only to 4%....it is possible they may have been wired in though for some reason...not sure on that one) - Most searches I find for this topic on the internet keep telling me to check the boundaries, but everything seems ok to me that I can see. - If I try it in a VM (which would simulate Hard Wired), it works perfectly. Just not on wireless machines. It's gotta hopefully be something simple, but I just can't figure out the problem for the life of me. I was really hoping to move all our software distribution away from group policy and completely centralize most things I do into SCCM 2012, but this part is definitely holding me back. I just started getting into SCCM this past Summer, so I'm still a noob when it comes to it and may be missing something obvoius (I can only hope), but I would really appreciate any advice anyone can give me. Thanks

Hi guys, Just a quick query really, going to google afterwards anyway but like to hear your thoughts. I want to upgrade our MDT2012 to the new 2013 Update 1 for our Windows 10 roll out. I am just wondering whether I can just install the 2013 Update 1 install straight on 2012, or do you have to install MDT2012 update 1, MDT2013 and then then install 2013 Update 1. Also is there anything people came across that might be helpful Thanks as always. Dan

Morning Edugeekers, Currently in the process of moving from a 2003 CC3 network to Server 2012!! Everything is going smoothly, but now we are on to the group policies! As we are moving from xp to Windows 7 I assume most of the policies might be the same, but do Microsoft provide some pre-defined policy templates for schools/education establishments? Would save me a lot of time testing completing this myself. Cheers Dan

Hello, we have been having problems with netbooks logging in. We have a set of 30 netbooks which connects to our Ruckus 7372 APs which have one in each classroom and the classrooms are next to each other this should allow it to roam into different aps. They are connecting using a radius ssid which authenticates the nps server on the domain. The problem we have been having is it take about an half a hour to a hour for them all to login. User profiles are just folder redirection so shouldn't take long for them to login in. I will be staying late one night to have a look at the problem in more detail, just wondering if anyone has had issues the same or anyone could give me some pointers on what i can try to sort the problem. Thanks in advance

Hi all, Got a bit of an issue with adding a 32bit driver on a 64bit print server. The printer in question is a RISO comcolor 7150. The 64bit driver works fine, but when i go to install the 32bit driver, the server doesn't do anything. I have a compatible driver for the OS, and i can access the .inf file for the driver, but i click ok and nothing happens. This is really frustrating as i need to retire a very old 2003 print server ASAP, and until this driver installs, that cannot happen. Is there anything i am doing wrong? Regards Harry

It seems like Microsoft still hasn't made any real improvements to the customizations for the start menu and taskbar through GPO. In our case, we are currently configuring our first customer with 2012 terminal servers. And like most sysadmins, we do not want the regular user on the terminal server to be able to even see the icons for powershell, server manager or administrative tools on their start menu or taskbar. Not that they are able to run those programs, but knowing from experience, "dumb" users will eventually click on anything they see is available on their menus. And when those programs generates the "access denied" error message, our phones are glowing in the matter of minutes. So! With the help of some heavy googlin' and lots of error and trial, i finally got what i wanted to work. So here is a guide which will provide you with the right GPO settings to clear the start menu of server manager, task manager and powershell. It will also clear the taskbar for server manager and powershell, but leave the file explorer and still let the users pin the programs they want to the taskbar. 1. User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar 2. Computer Configuration\Preferences\Windows Settings\Files 3. User Configuration\Preferences\Windows Settings\Files 4. User Configuration\Preferences\Windows Settings\Registry - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband (set to delete and apply once and do not reapply) - Create the following new registry items: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Taskband] "FavoritesResolve"=hex:98,02,00,00,4c,00,00,00,01,14,02,00,00,00,00,00,c0,00,00,00,00,00,00,46,83,00,80,00,20,00,00,00,4e,95,54,7a,4b,bf,cd,01,4e,95,54,7a,4b,bf,cd,01,36,42,94,a5,a4,6a,cd,01,97,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,3e,01,14,00,1f,80,c8,27,34,1f,10,5c,10,42,aa,03,2e,e4,52,87,d6,68,52,00,31,00,00,00,00,00,6a,41,52,6f,11,00,54,61,73,6b,42,61,72,00,3c,00,08,00,04,00,ef,be,6a,41,52,6f,6a,41,52,6f,2a,00,00,00,46,3d,01,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,54,00,61,00,73,00,6b,00,42,00,61,00,72,00,00,00,16,00,d6,00,32,00,97,01,00,00,f9,40,17,a4,20,00,46,49,4c,45,45,58,7e,31,2e,4c,4e,4b,00,00,78,00,08,00,04,00,ef,be,6a,41,52,6f,6a,41,52,6f,2a,00,00,00,4a,3d,01,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,4e,00,00,00,00,00,46,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,20,00,45,00,78,00,70,00,6c,00,6f,00,72,00,65,00,72,00,2e,00,6c,00,6e,00,6b,00,00,00,40,00,73,00,68,00,65,00,6c,00,6c,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,2c,00,2d,00,32,00,32,00,30,00,36,00,37,00,00,00,1c,00,42,02,00,4d,00,69,00,63,00,72,00,6f,00,73,00,6f,00,66,00,74,00,2e,00,57,00,69,00,6e,00,64,00,6f,00,77,00,73,00,2e,00,45,00,78,00,70,00,6c,00,6f,00,72,00,65,00,72,00,00,00,1c,00,00,00,a8,00,00,00,1c,00,00,00,01,00,00,00,1c,00,00,00,2d,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,a7,00,00,00,11,00,00,00,03,00,00,00,02,a6,df,3a,10,00,00,00,00,43,3a,5c,55,73,65,72,73,5c,61,64,6d,69,6e,69,73,74,72,61,74,6f,72,2e,53,4d,42,5c,41,70,70,44,61,74,61,5c,52,6f,61,6d,69,6e,67,5c,4d,69,63,72,6f,73,6f,66,74,5c,49,6e,74,65,72,6e,65,74,20,45,78,70,6c,6f,72,65,72,5c,51,75,69,63,6b,20,4c,61,75,6e,63,68,5c,55,73,65,72,20,50,69,6e,6e,65,64,5c,54,61,73,6b,42,61,72,5c,46,69,6c,65,20,45,78,70,6c,6f,72,65,72,2e,6c,6e,6b,00,00,60,00,00,00,03,00,00,a0,58,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,69,6e,76,65,6e,74,75,6d,30,32,00,00,00,00,00,00,a6,58,be,d3,b6,46,ed,42,8f,a3,d3,93,8e,1d,5d,8c,95,9e,41,73,c0,2a,e2,11,93,f3,00,50,56,90,4c,60,a6,58,be,d3,b6,46,ed,42,8f,a3,d3,93,8e,1d,5d,8c,95,9e,41,73,c0,2a,e2,11,93,f3,00,50,56,90,4c,60,00,00,00,00 "Favorites"=hex:00,3e,01,00,00,14,00,1f,80,c8,27,34,1f,10,5c,10,42,aa,03,2e,e4,52,87,d6,68,52,00,31,00,00,00,00,00,6a,41,52,6f,11,00,54,61,73,6b,42,61,72,00,3c,00,08,00,04,00,ef,be,6a,41,52,6f,6a,41,52,6f,2a,00,00,00,46,3d,01,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,54,00,61,00,73,00,6b,00,42,00,61,00,72,00,00,00,16,00,d6,00,32,00,97,01,00,00,f9,40,17,a4,20,00,46,49,4c,45,45,58,7e,31,2e,4c,4e,4b,00,00,78,00,08,00,04,00,ef,be,6a,41,52,6f,6a,41,52,6f,2a,00,00,00,4a,3d,01,00,00,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,4e,00,00,00,00,00,46,00,69,00,6c,00,65,00,20,00,45,00,78,00,70,00,6c,00,6f,00,72,00,65,00,72,00,2e,00,6c,00,6e,00,6b,00,00,00,40,00,73,00,68,00,65,00,6c,00,6c,00,33,00,32,00,2e,00,64,00,6c,00,6c,00,2c,00,2d,00,32,00,32,00,30,00,36,00,37,00,00,00,1c,00,42,00,00,00,1d,00,ef,be,02,00,4d,00,69,00,63,00,72,00,6f,00,73,00,6f,00,66,00,74,00,2e,00,57,00,69,00,6e,00,64,00,6f,00,77,00,73,00,2e,00,45,00,78,00,70,00,6c,00,6f,00,72,00,65,00,72,00,00,00,1c,00,00,00,ff "FavoritesChanges"=dword:0000000a "FavoritesVersion"=dword:00000002 "FavoritesRemovedChanges"=dword:00000002 Set all these registry items to ble "apply once and do not reapply" 5. In my case, i also had to add the Norwegian names for Task Manager and Administrative Tools for example. Hope this was helpfull!

Evening All, Having a few issues with DPM at the moment backing up servers. I currently have two servers that no matter what I try or do always have a inconsistent replica on their D drive. Its starting to make me go crazy as we moved from Backup Exec to this thinking it would be an upgrade and a darn lot cheaper with also getting the whole system centre suite for the same cost. Both servers are 2012 R2 except DPM server on 2016 and have the latest agent installed along with windows backup. All of the VSS Writers never error and when I run a manual backup on the server with wbadmin from command prompt it all works fine. Their coming up after a consistency check stating it has completed with an unexpected error of the following: An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Cannot create a file when that file already exists (0x800700B7)) I've googled and googled and fine no one with this issue nor a solution. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ashley

Hi, got a few questions with RDWeb and our domain name. Currently, we're hosting our domain name ourself with a dynamic IP, using NameCheap. Namecheap supports dynamic A records which gets updated when our IP address changes. This works fine. We're now looking to setup RDS (we tried previously, within the last week and eventually got it working on a test setup). I have bought an SSL cert for our domain and installed it on my Web Server. I have additionally installed the RD Gateway Role and RD Broker as the ports are already forwarded to the server (443 & 80). I installed the RD Web role, however IIS was complaining that it wasn't in the right directory to load the page (it installed in C:\Windows\Web etc), so I moved it to inetpub\wwwroot etc where the "RDWeb" folder now sits. However, since doing this and changing the physical path in IIS, I now only receive Error 500 Internal Server error, which doesn't help us! Our main SSL site is still loading fine, however I want /RDWeb to load, and it doesn't! Am I okay with having IIS, RDWeb & Gateway all on one box. We're a small business with not much web traffic, but was concerned regarding security. It's not in a DMZ or anything like that and is on our main network, so want to protect us as much as possible. Any help with getting this to work would be great. Thanks, Whistler.

Hey all, In the summer I'm looking at an upgrade. File server: Win Server 2008 OS: RAID 1 array Data: RAID 5 array - 8 disks - (I know. Don't mention it. I might be able to RAID 10 this at the same time.) I want to upgrade the OS to Server 2012 so I can use it as a virtual SAN to implement a second VMWare host - I need shared storage for that. IMO an in-place upgrade is just going to destroy the OS so a wipe down is needed I reckon. If I wipe the OS, how do I maintain all the shares and permissions on the data without having to re-create the shares. If I xcopy the data to a NAS, or restore a backup, will the shares/perms appear to the new OS. The perms will, what about the shares. It can't be as simple as it just will - surely. Hhhhmmm. Cheers in advance
