This Summer, I will be installing a new server at a large middle school which is currently transitioning into a secondary school. Can anyone offer me some advice on what I should be including in the setup? I will have two host servers to play with. Both will run Server 2012R2 with Hyper-V VMs. My initial thoughts as to how to divide the roles needed are as follows:

Host 01 vDC 01: AD, DHCP, DNS, DFS etc

vUTL 01: WDS/MDT, WSUS

Host 02 vDC 02: Secondary Domain controller

vUTL 02: Sophos, Printers

Host 01 will be the new server with 64GB RAM. Host 02 will be the current server, rebuilt from 2008R2 to 2012R2 and 24GB RAM. My initial thoughts are that I should be configuring DHCP failover. Are there any other redundancy features I should be building into the system? Or even any additional features that, whilst not necessarily offering redundancy, offer extra functionality to the domain? I also have two NAS devices to hold some form of backup. I was thinking of using the free version of Veeam to backup VMs (subject to storage space) to one NAS and then use the existing Macrium Reflect software they have to backup data to the other.

I finally have a chance to build a VDI solution for our labs. We are wanting to go with a 100% Microsoft solution for cost reasons (our site license makes it considerably cheaper). I do have one issue though. I cannot get a single USB stick to show up on the virtual desktop. I have tried to get devices to redirect from both my desktop and a Dell Wyse 5010. Both my desktop and the Wyse client see the USB stick, but the VD is not picking it up for some reason. Is this even supported by Hyper-V and RDS? If so, how do I go about making it work? Current setup uses Server 2012 R2 for all roles and a Windows 10 , non persistent, collection. Current Roles: RD Web Access, RD Gateway, RD Licensing, RD Connection Broker, Hyper-V Virtualization Host, and VMM. These roles are installed on three separate servers for test purposes. I thought I knew how to do this, but I was obviously wrong. So if someone would be a hero and provide a how to, I will be ever grateful.

Hello, Okay this might sound rudimentary, but I'm in need of some help here configuring my server. I am fairly new to Server 2012 R2 and I've only recently started studying for my MCSA due to my new job. Listed below is the hardware i currently use for my lab and the issues I've been having. Current hardware setup: So first off I have an ISP modem/router right now that hands out a 10.0.0.x IP address. Then I have a linksys router that I'm using and it hands out a 192.168.1.x IP address. Then I have a netgear 8 port switch. (Only Switch i had on hand) I have an Ethernet cable running from port 1 on the ISP modem to the Internet port on the router. Then I have an Ethernet cable running from port 1 on the router to port 1 on the switch. Then on port 2 on the switch I have an Ethernet cable going to the Windows server. So when I go to build the server I turn off DHCP on the router and leave it with the static 192.168.1.1 IP address with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 Then I setup the DHCP server and DNS server with the address scheme of 192.168.1.2 Also I have statically map my servers NIC to the following. IP: 192.168.1.2 Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0 Default gateway: 192.168.1.1 Primary DNS: 192.168.1.2 Secondary DNS: 192.168.1.1 Services Currently Installed on the Server Active Directory- Working DHCP- Working- Scope: 192.168.1.40 - 192.168.1.75 Router: 192.168.1.1 [*]DNS- Working [*]RAS- Not working Current RAS Configuration: I configured it for VPN Access only to test if someone can access docs, software, etc. outside the network. i have the DHCP automatically handing out the DHCP to the clients instead of having an address pool. i have also allowed access for the VPN in AD and I'm using PPTP. -I have port forwarding on the router setup for PPTP: 1723 and i have enabled VPN Passthrough. -on the client side i have configured the vpn connection going to the server "192.168.1.2" and i entered the correct domain credentials, but it wont connect to the network. Currently im stuck at this point and i've watched every video under the sun on how to configure Remote access with 1 NIC and i still cant get the remote access to work.

Wondering if someone can advise, as I have never come across/dealt with this before. We have a Server 2012 host, hosting two Server 2016 virtual machines. The VMs have been veeeeeery slow lately, I noticed the physical drive on the host (D drive) only has about 20gb of storage left, it's where the VHD files are stored etc.... eek. I know that deleting anything on the VMs won't free up any space on the host so my thought was to shrink each virtual drive on our VMs. Can anyone else advise? Thanks!

Hey all, Wondering if I could get some help please. Overcame a few issues trying to get a fresh install working on Server 2012 R2 (mainly services activated had a Cross against it and the tabs weren't allowing access) However, resolved these issues and now struggling with the following. All setup pages are completed (using the currently in use setup on an old server) but two things; Firstly, after changing the web.config file (as instructed) to restrict access to the setup.aspx page it wont allow any access to it at all. At the moment it is still set to allow * until I figure out what is going wrong. Secondly, when going to the HAP in the normal manner (not via the setup), I get multiple issues. Home page - !Token Cookie Missing, user not logged in correctly. !Invalid Administrator Credentials, you may need to get your administrator to reset the HAP+ Settings for Active Directory (x2). My Files - !Token Cookie Missing, user not logged in correctly (x2). How can I resolve the login issues? This version is not live yet until I have it running without issues. However, I am excited about moving over to the latest version. Currently using version 8 and have been for quite a while. I look forward to your responses. I want to get this up and running ASAP! Thank you in advance. KYS

As part of a continuing effort to try and standardise the large number of server setups/migrations I do as part of my job I have written a powershell script, its a bit of a working document. If any part of it could come in handy to anyone please feel free to use it. Ive not included the ADMX, ADML or Exported GPO's but if you wish to give it a go you will need to export your own set. The names of GPOs are in the script that you will need to create, otherwise I can supply blank ones with correct names if anybody is interested? Feedback welcomed as always! NewServerSetupv2.1.ps1

Hi guys Not sure if this is a DPM issue per se, i assume it must be as this is a test restore im having an issue with, the actual server itself is up and running. So ive restored the VM, started it up, it shows the windows logo with the swirly dots, does that for about 30 seconds then i get a black screen. At random times a window will appear, sometimes its just the border, sometimes its the full window but its empty, occasionally i actually get an error message, it stays onscreen just long enough for me to read "sign in process intialization error, see event log for details" Googling just keeps pointing me to Windows 7, saying things like boot to safe mode, last known config, i cant do anything with this server, a restart hasnt helped. Ive tried two different restore dates now one from disk and one from tape, has anyone else had this problem restoring a VM using DPM Server version is 2012 r2 Vicky Tofield IT Tech Sir Christopher Hatton Academy

Hello, I'm having a few people struggling to get a VPN connection to our 2012 R2 server. We have a static pool of 13 addresses but they don't all get used even though there is demand from remote users ie the connection attempt is rejected even when there is enough IP addresses in the static pool. In this screen shot I'm confused as to what the 192.168.8.192 IP Address is? When the static range was entered it just appeared. Do you need enough free IP address for the range you enter plus the generated IP Address? Many thanks

For the life of me, I am having problems creating a managed Windows 7 Vdi Pool under server 2012R2. My RDS Virtualization server is running server 2012 R2 and I can create managed Windows 8 VM's quite easily. The trouble I am having is that when I create my Windows 7 VDI pool, I keep getting the error "The provisioned machine couldn't join the domain", but I can see the machine has been created, and it is listed in Active Directory, in the correct OU. My Windows 7 template has service pack 1 installed, the template joined the domain before it was sysprepped and generalized. I also made sure that the network card had the correct field in the DNS settings. The first machine is always created, and when I look at the machine in Hyper-V, I can see that it is at the log on screen asking me to sign in with Ctrl + Alt + Delete This is my setup: EDGE1.lab.local Server 2012R2 (RD Web Access, RD Virtualization Host, Rd Connection Broker) IP: 10.0.0.2 Subnet 255.255.255.0 Primary DNS: 10.0.0.1 DC01.lab.local Server 2008 R2 (DC, DHCP, DNS) IP: 10.0.0.1 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Primary DNS: 127.0.0.1 The other problem I am having is with my Windows 8 Pool. RD Web Access URL: https://edge1.lab.local/RDWeb/Pages/en-US/login.aspx This is the strange part. When I log on using my admin credentials in IE, or Chrome, I can see the Windows 8 Powered on VDI machine. When I click on the machine in Chrome I download the .RDP and try to run it. It just hangs. Looking at the address of the file, it is listed as Edge1.lab.local and I get the error Remote machine is not powered on etc.... If I edit the .RDP file that I downloaded to match the NIC address of the machine, (10.0.0.123) I can connect to it using RDS, but I'm thinking, this is not the way it is supposed to work. Any ideas? The strange thing is that the machine works when I boot into it using RDS. Any thoughts? Another issue I'

Hello... I have virtualized terminal server on HyperV. All my remote clients use USB SC reader for certificate use. Now pay attention... the Server 2012 has new feature regarding Smart Card use: "Smart card reader detection logic has been added so that the Smart Card Service runs only when appropriate. On Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8, the Smart Card Service (scardsvr) automatically starts when the user connects a smart card reader and automatically stops when a user removes a smart card reader and no other smart card reader is connected to the computer. On startup, the Smart Card Service automatically starts if a reader was previously connected to the computer but a reader is not currently connected to the system. If no smart card readers are connected to the computer, the service will automatically shut down one minute after the last API call into the Smart Card Service. If a reader was never previously connected to the computer, the service will not start automatically." And here is the main part... HyperV running OS doesn't support USB SC reader detection on remote client. When I insert the card nothing happens. The SmartCard service doesn't start (Automatic setting). RDP SmartCart share is enable on client. If I start service manualy then the SmartCard is accessible. But only for the time of my login. if I logout then the service is stopped. I also test it with logon to non HyperV server... the service starts with no problem. For now I solved the issue with task net start SCardSvr on 1 minute. Please can anybody help me with this...

Morning all Trying to set up a few printers to deploy through group policy and ran into a problem. The printers will not deploy for love nor money, I've sorted point & print etc Ran through gpresult and noticed it's deploying from the secondary DC, which is fine however, when checking the policy settings on the 2ndary, the 'deployed printers' tab just literally isn't there. I'm wondering if it could be a sysvol replication issue, though there is nothing in the event logs and everything else seems to be fine. Main DC is server 19, secondary server 2012r2 Really has me stumped, just wondered if anyone has ran into similar issues or has any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hi, Apologies if this should be in an RDP Remote APP Forum rather than MIS Ive just setup a 2012 R2 server with RDP Connection Broker, Session Host and RD Web Access roles installed. Im only testing internally to start off with but looking to deploy sims via RDP Remote App. Ive installed SIMS to the RDP Server, published the app and logged in via the web portal. I get all the way to the point of sims loading (press the details button I can see the session starting logging into the user account) then the window closes and sims does not open. Sims loads directly on the server fine, I have published Adobe Reader, Calculator and Paint to RD Web Access and these all work fine. I have checked the allow command prompt settings in the Remote Applications Properties page. Has anyone come across this or have any recommendations? This type of setup is in a couple of other schools that I know of. Thanks

Hi, When printing from Publisher 2013 in an RDS session (both full and via RemoteApp), the user receives the following error: "The file %s cannot be opened. Access privileges have not been given." In the Event Viewer, "Application and Service Logs"\"Microsoft Office Alerts" - it displays the error description with the code: 0x80070005. Searching Google, forums suggested it was an activation issue for some reason. Removing the keys and re-installing (both a MAK and VLK) - Office activates OK but Publisher still doesn't print. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks, Paul.

Hi All, We have just virtualized our file server using Hyper v and all seemed to be running well. We currently have an issue with the servers CPU is currently running up and down all of the time. See the image below. The process using this is "System" . Lately the server has started to drop its connection to users and when it does the CPU idles at 0% - 2%. It brings itself back online again in around 30 seconds. Has anyone else had this issue? Thanks

Hello everyone! Long time reader, first time poster . We're trying to make Wacom Intuos tablets work through remote desktop on thin clients. The thin clients are Wyse R10L and D10D thin clients, all running ThinOS 8.0.522. We have the passthrough working fine (modified the wnos.ini to force the ID of the tablet through to the client, it's being picked up fine). The remote session (be it Server 2012R2 RDS or Windows 8.1 enterprise VDI's) picks up the tablet just fine, the wacom software sees the tablet, allows you to interact with the tablet, buttons work ect. What doesn't work is pen mapping. The pen will not move the cursor around on the screen. I moved cursor speed on the thin client down as low as it would go, and that actually made the cursor respond in the remote session (you can now tap, draw, and anything you'd normally do with the tablet). This would work fine, except the user can't actually see the cursor move. The mouse cursor stays in place until the user taps some where or is actively drawing. I'm guessing this means that we need to go yet lower with cursor speed, but we can't get any lower. I need some options! These must work in this environment (it doesn't have to work in both 2012 and 8.1, if it needs to work only in 8.1 VDI's I can spin up the few more we'd need for coverage). Please help!

I have captured an image, using DISM, of Windows 7 Pro x64 with all updates installed and the odd minor software such as photostory & movie maker. I am trying to test it by pushing out using MDT 2013. It seems to deploy OK, gets to a CTRL+ALT+DEL screen. However, when you look in MDT Deployment Workbench monitoring, it still shows as "running" on step 52 out of 88. It is a standard task sequence with my custom wim imported into the Operating Systems. No extra applications installed. As I said, it gets to CTRL+ALT+DEL, it joins the domain and GP updates and picks up software perfectly. Any ideas as to what I could have done wrong for it to still be running according to MDT? Extra info I thought of, it joins the domain using an account that is a copy of the domain administrator account. I have done this in other places and it has not affected it before.

Hey Guys, I built 2 custom PCs with the exact same hardware. My issue is deploying an image through MDT to the machines. I created a new deployment share and new task sequence to deploy Windows 7 Pro x64. I also added in the Mobo drivers to inject during install. When I deployed the image on the first PC it worked fine. When I deployed the image on the second identically built PC, it will always have an error on starting windows. iastorA.sys is corrupt or missing I created a 2nd task sequence and downloaded the chipset/lan/video drivers from the manufacturers website so they are the latest version. I created a new selection profile to inject only the new drivers. Upon system reboot into Windows, instead of the first error I got BSOD and an immediate crash. I'm not sure why this image will deploy to the first PC but not the second. I can redeploy the image on the first PC with no problems. I am about to do an OS build from scratch on the second, then do a sysprep capture to have a copy of the custom image and I can try deploying that out to both PCs. Time is of the essence here. I only have another day or so to play with these before they need to be deployed out. Any insight into the MDT deployment issue would be appreciated. Build: - ASUS P9X79 LE Motherboard - 32GB Corsair Vengeance Pro quad channel kit DDR3 1866MHz - Intel Core i7 4820k 3.7GHz - Samsung 840 Pro SSD 256GB (OS Disk) - 2x 4TB Seagate Desktop HDD Sata3 (Raid 1 from BIOS) - eVGA GeForce GTX 780 SuperClocked 3GB DDR5 *Note*: On the second build I had the Samsung as Disk 1 instead of Disk 0, so the OS got installed on the Raid. I've fixed this issue, but the error messages as described above are the same.

Hi guys Got a bit of an issue with a printer that we have shared from our print server being printed to by machines outside of it's location. It's based in the library, but students in classrooms appear to be able to print to it. I have changed the share and NTFS permissions to only allow the computers in the Library to print to it, but that doesn't appear to work. I have then looked at the effective permissions for a user and see that they don't have access, but they are still able to print...? We do have Papercut, but as far as I can see Papercut only allows restriction by user? Any thoughts or ideas on ways to enforce a restriction? I have read various posts from people stating that you should be able to restrict via permissions for computers or security group containing the computers, but doesn't seem to work...? Thanks in advance for any thoughts/ideas??

Server 2012 R2 (Datacentre). When doing Right Click > Properties on a folder... it takes several minutes to load (like... up to 10 minutes!) However, if I try and pull the properties of a regular file, it's almost instantaneous. Any ideas of a fix for this?

Morning everyone, We have recently made the move to Office 2016 from Office 2010 at our school, and for the most part the migration has gone fine. However now I am getting reports of student losing work. Upon investigation I have realised that students are now able to save office documents to "Network Locations" in My Computer. This is a location in their local C drive profiles that get automatically cleared on a weekly basis. They should be saving to their home network drive. Their home drives are already set as the default save location in the office GPOs. I have a screenshot attached to show what I mean. I have had a look around our office GPOs however can't see where I can block this. Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks. Regards Harry

LAE is an ambitious, academic state sixth form college in the heart of Stratford, close to the Olympic Park and just two minutes from Stratford Station (zone 2/3), with excellent links to all parts of London. The academy was established in 2012 to provide opportunities for young people in Newham and neighbouring authorities seeking to access to a high quality academic A-Level education in preparation for application to some of the UK’s leading and most competitive universities. In the intervening five years it has done just that! The Senior Technician will further enhance the IT services to over 450 students and 50 staff. This is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking to take on more strategic or management responsibility, leading project work and moulding service improvements, whilst still remaining very hands on. This is a great opportunity to take the lead with support, and would appeal to technicians who want to be more pro-active in how IT services are delivered and enhanced. It will also enable you to work alongside Independent partner schools including Brighton College, Eton College and Highgate School Essential technical knowledge includes AD, DNS, DHCP, Network Switching (ideally HP), Windows 7 and 10, and Office 2016 and O365 Desirable tech knowledge includes Windows Service 2012 or above and Hyper-V (or similar), G Drive, iSAMS, Firefly, Papercut, Cunninghams, Inventry, Impero, Lightspeed and Voip to name but a few This role will require an enhanced DBS clearance and is required urgently, so please apply to ESP with you latest CV asap. Interim candidates may also be considered whilst the permanent recruitment process is underway.
