Hi All, Our head has requested that we provide SIMS.net access for our teaching staff from home but do not want to stump up for the cost of SIMS learning gateway. Has anyone else setup a similar system because I just need a few pointers. Can this be setup through RemoteApp? Some hand holding would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone setup an LTSP Server? What I am looking at doing is setting up a Windows Multipoint Server and with all the old machines boot them from the network (PXE) and use the LTSP Server to point them to the Multipoint server. I have looked into this but haven't yet found a decent tutorial on how to set this up. The LTSP Server does not need DHCP Server installed as we cannot run two as this will break things. Has anyone on here done this and got it working, if so could you tell me how.

I might be saying the wrong thing, but I would like to move my Lab domain to a hosted account that I own. My local lab domain is lab.local My public domain is xyz.com (public facing domain) The other thing I need help in configuring is changing my remote settings. I want to change my RDP servers to point to Remote.xyz.com Can someone point me in the right direction?

Hi all We have given out loads of macbooks here to student and now we need to give them access to Techsoft 2D Design. We've tried two approaches to this. One was to install it on to our Remote Desktop cluster which works, but the 2D Design toolbars disappear constantly. So then we tried to push the app out using remote apps. This way, the toolbars don't disappear, but the mouse point doesn't line up with where the actual click occurs. So the tip of the mouse is about 10 px to one side of where the click event occurs. Not great for a precision drawing app. We can't use another design tool on the macs easily as we need this tool for our laser cutters. Has anyone tried getting 2D design working on a mac via Remote Desktop? Olly

Hi, all Just having a issue with AnywhereTS, that my thin clients (Wyse V90L's) cant open the AnywhereTS control panel. It just displays this message "Your computer cannot be identified as an AnywhereTS client. This application is used to configure setting for AnywhereTS clients and can only be run from a client powered by AnywhereTS" Regards, Tiger465

Normally I would consider such a statment harracy and punishable severely but recent events have swayed my viewpoint a little. The universal truth seems to be that developers are lazy, preffering to do the least possible to get a system working. This is even worse in an educational environment where multiplatform means using as many abstraction layers as it takes to get the job done without writing another line of code. Most of the education resource type apps here are written in flash and packaged in an executable player, this system I had thought was rather nasty as it fell back to flash of all things but TBH actually ended up working quite well, Windows and Mac support with no need to install and simple to just run off a file share. Functionally this idea is actually fine and its just my code snobbery (along with my dislike of Flash) that caused my issues with it. Now one day we get a new testing app (universally lauded for its educational outcomes . . . . Danger, Danger Will Robinson) which is multiplatform but instead of running flash behind the scenes it uses python and OpenGL. Yay I thought, real code in an almost respectable language and using OpenGL it must be flashy... Wrong! The app itself is totally unremarkable visually but does rely heavily on OpenGL acceleration to make the buttons pulse slowly in the background. Not only that but it cannot use an existing network connection context insisting on opening a new one which is fine in a domain environment but in this instance makes it unusable on certain stations (standalone with mapped drives and stored credentials). Down to the problem, OpenGL 2.0 is not too new but is not supported over RDP, this means that this app can't run over RDP, no terminal server, no Multipoint server and all to make the buttons pulse. The issues actually lie deeper within the app as I found a nice little library that runs OpenGL 2.0 in software ( Mesa Home Page ) which I compiled and which works on Server 2008 R2 (all be it slowly). Yay I thought, a way around the problem, wrong again, software that is closer to the hardware and helpfully uses unsupported calls directly to it have a nasty tendancy to kill the process meaning that this app despite its better underpinnings comes out as a total looser when it comes down to portability. In conclusion, in some instances, OpenGL is worse than Flash for portability and usability. I am still in shock. EDIT: As it may be of use to someone else I have attached a ZIP with the three DLLs to this post. The idea is to just drop them in the same folder as the EXE of the unhappy program and it will override the windows OpenGL libraries for this program. Turned out to be helpful here where the new intel chips/drivers did not support OpenGL properly or in a way that some older software could detect. GLU32.zip

While looking for a free and resourse minimal way to open up remote support sessions to Vista and 7 workstations I reinvestigated Remote Assistance. Looking through online documents it seemed quite easy to setup a group policy to allow for unsolicited RA sessions and setup allowed users to offer these. This was all well and good but the fact remained that the interface on both the offering and requesting side was mostly hidden with either no UI or activation via the command line. To make this a little easier I created a couple of HTA applications to make the job a little easier: RemoteAssist.hta - Offers the supporter a simple textbox and button to enter the hostname of the remote machine into and click connect. This just passes the command via the command line to offer an unsolisited RA session. WhoAmI.hta - is designed to be run on the client and will show in large letters the hostname of the computer which can be read to the supporter over the phone. Although this can and possibly will be automated much more in the future it seems to work ok for some of the more computer savy teachers to support the others easily over the phone throughout the school. I push these out to different groups by adding a shortcut to the desktop using the following VBS (some not in code box as forum garbled it ): AddLink "Offer Remote Assistance", "Offer Remote Assistance", "\\pnsdc\cdshare$\0RemoteAssist\RemoteAssist.hta", 1, "\\pnsdc\cdshare$\0RemoteAssist\", "", "%SystemRoot%\system32\msra.exe" AddLink "Offer Remote Assistance", "Offer Remote Assistance", "\\server\share$\0RemoteAssist\RemoteAssist.hta", 1, " RemoteAssist.zip

Hi, Apologies if this should be in an RDP Remote APP Forum rather than MIS Ive just setup a 2012 R2 server with RDP Connection Broker, Session Host and RD Web Access roles installed. Im only testing internally to start off with but looking to deploy sims via RDP Remote App. Ive installed SIMS to the RDP Server, published the app and logged in via the web portal. I get all the way to the point of sims loading (press the details button I can see the session starting logging into the user account) then the window closes and sims does not open. Sims loads directly on the server fine, I have published Adobe Reader, Calculator and Paint to RD Web Access and these all work fine. I have checked the allow command prompt settings in the Remote Applications Properties page. Has anyone come across this or have any recommendations? This type of setup is in a couple of other schools that I know of. Thanks

I was wondering if anyone could give me insight to what we could use that is equivalent to ChromeRDP (Chrome extension) that could be used for 90+ users to log into our terminal servers. From what I have seen ChromeRDP's support is non existent and their license purchasing is done by a weird method I am sure our organisation would be sceptical on. Note: I am yet to try Ericom.

Hi All, I'm about to publish a certain servers available through port 443 (SSL) only therefore I need to use Windows Server 2008 Std. x64 TSG service, but now in this case what is the best practice for deploying this infrastructure ? Do i need to join the TSG into the domain ? Should I need to open LDAP port 389 from DMZ into my local network --> security hole ? Any help and suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

[windows phone 7] Suggest Features for Windows Phone 7
SYNACK posted a topic in Mobile Devices & Tablets
Customer Feedback for Windows Phone Found this a short while back and it allows you to suggest of vote for new or improved features for Windows Phone 7. Each logon gets you ten votes that you can spend in blocks up to three at time on any suggestion. I spent three on a native RDP app with support for TS Gateway So if you have a Windows Phone device, are thinking of getting one, would like a better platform to use or just to provoke more competition submit your ideas for smarter smart phones. -
I am trying to set up windows server 2008 to publish remote applications to clients via rdp. However, when a user clicks on the icon to open the application, it prompts for them to enter their username and password. Is there a way to get it to use the same credentials as the already authenticated user account?

Hi We've just had a new server installed and domain built from scratch. Since we've had everything up and running again we can't conect to any external (outgoing) remote desktops connections. We keep getting the folowing error: The computer name and domain for the remote computer is correct. We're with exa-networks for firewall and filtering and they're adamant it's not them. All internal remote connections are working well and we can remote in to the site via offsite/mobile internet. We can also make external (outgoing) remote conections using a domain device to and mobile internet. We've also tried using domain admin account to establish a remote access connection to offisite server with not luck. Any thoughts on which step in the process we've missed will be greatfully recieved. Thanks in advance.

ok, We now have Yeovil College students attending our school. They're required to access their work remotely via RDP using a proper RDP gateway. I'm not a big fan of this idea and I actively block the RDP client from even running for pupils. As I understand it the RDP client can use SSL to connect as well as a dynamic port for RDP. How can I create a firewall rule that would allow the client to only connect to a single ip address? (incoming I could do as I'd know the port and the range to limit) What I need is a block all, except... can windows firewall do that? can I do it by DNS instead of ip? the gateway is "workspace.yeovil.ac.uk" is that all I'd need to unblock? not the final computer "studentdesktop.yeovil.ac.uk" cheers

Firstly, Hi, I'm new here, this is my first post! I'm an apprentice, aged 17, working in a private school/sixth form college in the UK with approximately 800 students. Being an apprentice, my knowledge of systems isn't anywhere near perfect, and I still have much to learn. One of my colleagues directed me here for advice, and our network manager set me up with the task of finding out what we can do with these wonderful Chromebooks. I've had plenty of experience with Chromebooks from previous use, but only as an end user, and personally, I love them to bits, and they're quite impressive. Now however, having more of administrative role, I'm not sure that Chromebooks are going to be as simple as they look... For exams in the school, some students are allowed to use laptops if they require them under their circumstances. I don't actually know very much about our current situation, but from what the Network Manager briefly explained and what I can remember of it, he said something about the laptops being locked down completley other than an RDP connection to a server on which said student will write up their exam using MS Office Word. So the question is, is there anything of the sort that can be done with Chromebooks? Can they be locked down? Is it possible to use Chrome apps / a specific Chrome web app (for RDP, for example) and block everything else? Should it be done through the wireless access point (i.e. block everything except a whitelist of specific URLs)? Is Office Web Apps an idea? (We are planning on putting in an Office 365 setup some time later this year, if this opens any possibilities.) Looking forward to hearing some ideas / feedback

Hello everyone, I have a Windows 7 Home Premium computer that I use to connect to RD Web and launch RemoteApps. The problem is that I get prompted twice to enter credentials to open a RemoteApp - I get prompted at the RD Web Access login which is fine but for some reason SSO is not working and causing me to have to re-authenticate when I launch a RemoteApp. It also asks for credentials everytime I open another remoteApp during that session. I can confirm that the server side setup is working properly because I have tried it on another Windows computer which is not connected to the same domain. This other computer is running Windows 7 Professional - is it possible that this is the reason why, when launching remoteApps on Home Premium I am asked again when I click on a remoteApp - I can't think this would be. Any help/advice would be appreciated as it is quite annoying when trying to use a number of remoteApps!! Thanks in advance! J.Worth.

Microsoft has released a few details about the upcomming service pack for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. One of the more interesting new features is support for 3D acceleration support over RDP allowing users to play silverlight movies, use Aero or more importantly heavy graphics based apps like CAD that use 3D. Windows Virtualization Team Blog : Explaining Microsoft RemoteFX They are also teaming with Citrix to add this feature into their offering too. According to the posting it supports OpenGL also meaning it will work with the heavier CAD apps and Windows 7 will be supported as a VDI host under Hyper-V. I hope this means I'll be able to use this from my media center to laptop remotely as well. Other than that SP1 does not yet have an official release date but W7 and 2k8R2 versions will be released at the same time and are reported to be mostly minor bug fixes rather than feature packs as SP2 usually is.

Hello thar: We are a Secondary School and have over 200 HP t5135 thin clients across three sites. We have them set to "Auto" and "Persist" an RDP connection to a local Server 2003 Terminal Server, local to each site that is. This means that it boots up, logs into it's own HP ThinConnect OS as "user", then connects an RDP session to a Terminal Server, presenting the login box. After every weekend, anything up to about 15 t5135 thin clients are frozen:(. The only way to restore them is to get to them with a USB Flash drive with a good image generated from another thin client. They freeze in varying states, but the common factor is that most will not boot if you power them off and on again. This is a completely unacceptable rate of failure, and we are sorely dissappointed with the product on three counts, I don't recommend them, steer WELL clear: It freezes:eek: There is no tamper free Kiosk mode (We don't want the little darlings to be able to see the DNS and IP info for the thin client, we just want a big fat connect button and _nothing_ else.) You can't shut them down remotely (with over 200 across 3 sites this is a lot of electricity) The freeze appears to be related to the fact that terminal services boots you off an RDP session that you don't log in to, after about 1 minute. The Auto feature reconnects you, but after it has done this a few hundred or thousand times, the thin client slows down, then freezes. It is, at an educated guess, symptomatic of a memory leak, either in the application that lauches rdesktop, or rdesktop itself. I doubt the latter as I think that a new rdesktop process is spawned after each disconnect. Is there anyone out there who can suggest a fix, or an easy to configure, compatible alternative OS that will install from a USB boot? Any help with anything would be greatly appreciated.

We have a load of old computers in school (Year 1 and reception). Year 1 and reception have generic usernames and passwords which the teachers log onto the computers with in a morning. The old computers where getting really crappy and wouldnt run much on them so i created a script to remote them into an RDP server with high spec. Check it out (Note that i removed the computers from the domain first). When the computer boots up it will automatically boot into the RDP server. InternalRDP.zip Let me know what you all think?? If you want to know exactly what the script changes ask me

Hi, we have a 2008 server running terminal services and we are utilising the TS Web Access feature to allow users to connect to Outlook for example. the problem is the connection drops out every few minutes with the error : "the network connection to the remote computer was lost" This happens from most remote sites, with different client O/S's Vista with SP1 or XP with SP3. I dont beleive there is an issue with the connection at our office where the 2008 server is, we can RDP into other servers there without the connection dropping fine. Any assistance would be much apprechiated as the new 2008 Web Access Feature is fantastic and we really want to roll it out to more users. Currently there are only one or two people using it due to this issue.

Anyone know what settings you need on a Windows 7 PC to access Hosted Sims? Its a web based application but why do Capita make it so difficult to find out what settings you need to make it work. When user logon and it starts downloading stuff and asking for passswords again they "Wibble"! Nothing on Capitas website to help.
