So, how quickly are people planning to go up to Windows Server 2008 after it is released? I'm just having a play and think that some of the new features will make a lot easier! Too many to list in fact! So, your thoughts...

Hello, Has anyone been able to get ThumbnailPhoto from an on premises AD, to work on Windows 11? I have looked and tried several different powershell scripts, set up group policies, and followed this guide https://www.codetwo.com/admins-blog/use-active-directory-user-photos-windows-10/ as I have also tried their free software, but no matter what I do, the photos do not appear. Has anyone else been able to make this work? Thanks

Hi All We got a customer which is education based who enroll 100's of students every semester. and some students try to pull oone on the teacher saying they dont have an account when they do on AD so it leaves us sometimes creating multiple / duplicate accounts so they will have their main one Username then duplicate Username1 We dont have enough time to individually check the new users names on AD to see if they got an account already Is there a tool that will scan a CSV file - and detect to see if there is a user with that name already created? Thanks, Sam

Hi All, Recently setup RD Web access and associated roles (Connection broker, session host, gateway, licensing) on a server 2019 x64 standard VM running on Hyper-V. Locally web access works fine with published apps launching and working perfectly. Onto the issue... can't see the web page externally through out smoothwall. I have included screenshots of our smoothwall port forward config and gateway settings. Any help will be much appreciated as we're under a lot of pressure to get this operational.

Hi I want some advice. I currently am taking some exams for my Microsoft server course. but I've been hearing about Virtual PC's hosted in the cloud does any of you know a good place where i can install a few virtual servers that i can install in the cloud and practice for my exams? I don't want to be bound by my PC. would be an advantage to log in from any where and access the servers. Thanks

Hi Guys, I thought I sign up since I wish for some assistance to some of the network engineers/support there who would might know what is up with this specific weird issue we are having since I am scratching my head a little on this and it’s probably something simple but I am just not getting it. Some of our our servers today connection has become unidentified access and would not wish to communicate with our Domain Controller/DHCP. Nothing has been altered what so ever from any of us and this why it is weird. All Static IP information is correct and fits in with our IP range we was given, we have static IPs (the first 49) outside the DHCP Scope we have on this system (172.16.0 to 172.16.49 we have for static IPS and then we have made a scope from 172.16.12.50 to .16.254 in our address range) and we know the first 50 static IPs are fine since some of the servers we have been fine and the only ones that had been affected are some of them which is unfortunately our curriculum File server and our backup and printer server. How we got these to work as a temporary measure was to unbridge all our network adapters and have them go for automatic addresses but I am sure you can see why this is not the best thing to do and want to get them statically back and all network adapters bridged again to what they were. All of our environment is windows server 2008/Windows 7 so it is very strange that suddenly three of these servers have done this when nothing else has been altered. Even if we disabled some of the multiple network adapters to have one and put in the original IP details they are working fine, but when it is bridged it comes up with unidentified. We only have the standard windows firewall on and I have looked on group policy and nothign seems to have changed there. Static Ip addresses (0-49) have not been changed on bit and even some of the servers in this range are working still. Really do appreciate this guys and happy to folk out and pay for a beer if you can point what the issue could be Regards, Gareth

Hello, First of all a bit of history...I HATE PRINTERS! We had all our printers managed by Windows Server 2008 R2 and was working fine for as long as I can remember. Then all of a sudden (I had installed some skydive sync tool which might have caused the problem) certain printers would appear offline to both the server and the user. We could still ping the printers (they all have static ip addresses) but not print to them. This was a good opportunity to migrate the printers to a new server running Windows Server 2012 R2. The move over was fine and users could happily print. Fast forward 3 months. Just come in this morning and about 20 of the classroom printers now appear offline on our web management window and getting helpdesk tickets about 'not being able to print'. The temporary solution to this is to turn it off and on again but am keen to find out why it's started to do this again. Most printers are OKi devices Using Pcounter as print management printers all have static IP addresses Any help would be great Thank you, William

Hi, we have a network of following servers; currently we only install the latest Service Packs on the servers. 2 x Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-v hosts (Failover Cluster) 1 x Windows Server 2012 R2 Physical Server (DC + DNS + DHCP) 1 x Windows Server 2012 Virtual Server (DC + DNS + DHCP) 1 x Windows Server 2008 R2 Physical Server (SQL 2008) 1 x Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtual Server (FileServer) 1 x Windows Server 2012 Virtual Server (Print Server) 1 x Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtual Server (Application + IIS Server) 1 x Windows Server 2008 R2 Virtual Server (KasperskyMDTFileServer) There are about 500+ Windows 7 & Desktops. I am looking to install a WSUS on a virtual server (Server 2012 R2). What sort of Windows updates do you install on your servers ? How often do you install the updates on your servers ? Do you also installs updates your Windows 7/8 desktops ? Any help would be much appreciated, thank you.

Guest posted a topic in Network and Classroom Management
Hi I'm possibly looking into setting up DirectAccess for our school so that the teachers can access their logins from home! has anyone got this setup within the LEA and have you got it working? is there anything i should look out for when setting this up or what do i need to prepare for it? As far as I'm aware / researched, I need to have a server that is a member of the domain 2 NICs one for internal and the other for external I need firewall ports opening up on the LEA firewall. and i need my Server FQDN in the LEA DNS. does this sound right? im currently studying for my 70-680 and read this in the book.-

Hello people, just joined on here and just started a new career as an ICT Technician in a School. I was told to join this website as it was a good place for information but I wondered if anyone could direct me to any other websites that offer any training or info on any of the things I may be covering. I'm totally new to IT so any acronyms may confuse me. I would like to learn more about the network side of things like windows server, and I would like to know more about switches and cabling or anything you may recommend. Also one of the things that bug me a little is when teachers come to me with an issue about not being able to play a video, a file corrupting or just something everyday that end users seem to have trouble with. Just so you know I am going to be enrolled on a course in september but it would still be valuable to have some good websites to help someone who its just starting out. Regards Aaron

Changed from automatically assigning IP to manually assigning a few different free IPs with the relevant settings for subnet mask, DNS servers, gateway etc and this still didn't work. Another thread recommended uninstalling the network interfaces and then scanning for hardware changes which solved a similar issue, but that did not work in my case either. Any suggestions?

We need to copy a lot of large files from windows to AWS S3, we tried Azcopy but through our testing, the network got so saturated due to the bandwidth consumed. after doing a full search we found somehow to do it via the Azcopy command but unfortunately, it was ineffective. we are looking for a reliable way to limit the transfer speed while uploading to S3 to give our data center the space to run smoothly day and night.I know Azcopy is a strong tool but it really takes most of the bandwidth. Thank You

Hello all, I have just changed servers as the previous one crashed on me. One of my users was still logging onto their laptop signing in onto the old server creating a temp profile I would assume as the old server is offline. She was saving documents onto this 'temp' profile, so a good 6 months worth of documents. Today I have just changed the domain on the laptop to connect to the new server. Now I am unable to retrieve the documents that she has saved onto that profile. I have checked the local C: drive on her user profile/documents, but did not find any luck unfortunately. Has anyone come across this before, please let me know this urgent!!

Hi everyone In our school we use a software called Impero as an administration console for the teachers to use to block the students from certain websites or to disable Internet Explorer altogether, the students have found a way of accessing this even though its blocked they right click internet explorer and select "start without add ons", this enables them to use the internet with full access it even though its been blocked by the teacher on the impero console do any of you guys have a GPO that we could set in AD to combat this and remove the button when they right click?

Hi all, I am currently running Ghost console version 11.5.1.2266, on a windows 2003 server. We are looking at moving to a Server 2008, not neccessary virtual, in fact more likely to be a physical server but would like to know if it is an option. Also, is it stable on R2, and will it run on 32bit and 64bit? I have read a few articles claiming that it 'works', but I would much prefer confirmation from any of you guys that may have actually done this yourselves. If so is there anything to watch out for? I know licencing (Symantec) can be a pain, but I think I have that covered. Also is there a newer version to the one I am currently using? Bit reluctant to run the 'LiveUpdate' in case it installs, and I am not ready for this just yet. Thanks in advance. Steve.

Microsoft has released a few details about the upcomming service pack for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2. One of the more interesting new features is support for 3D acceleration support over RDP allowing users to play silverlight movies, use Aero or more importantly heavy graphics based apps like CAD that use 3D. Windows Virtualization Team Blog : Explaining Microsoft RemoteFX They are also teaming with Citrix to add this feature into their offering too. According to the posting it supports OpenGL also meaning it will work with the heavier CAD apps and Windows 7 will be supported as a VDI host under Hyper-V. I hope this means I'll be able to use this from my media center to laptop remotely as well. Other than that SP1 does not yet have an official release date but W7 and 2k8R2 versions will be released at the same time and are reported to be mostly minor bug fixes rather than feature packs as SP2 usually is.

I guess WSUS counts as deployment? Haha Having issues where some clients have updates that won't install. Some work, some don't. I'm fairly new to WSUS so just need some guidance on how I can resolve this without going to each individual PC and updating manually. TIA Gabe

Hello, I'm currently trying to deploy a wallpaper however when the users log in, the background is black. Upon checking the personalisation settings (please note the clients are using Windows 7) the deployed wallpaper can be seen in the small preview section. The network path is accessible by all users in the domain so I cannot see an issue! I do also have 'do not allow changes to desktop wallpaper' set for the users. On top of this, I have a deployed theme; however I temporarily removed this yet it had no impact. Speaking of the theme, some machines do not adjust to Aero upon the deploying of that also! Group Policy's regarding personalisation seem to be a big 'no-no' with our server for some reason. If anyone has any ideas why this could be happening, please do not hesitate to comment below! If you'd prefer to speak with me via my work email and potentially a phone call, let me know if this is easier! (Please note, I cannot successfully test any replies until Monday)

Our MS licensing is due this month so I received a reminder from our reseller. I thought of doing the usual stuff which is to just calculate the FTE numbers but then noticed that it looks different this time. After reading it carefully, I realised that the server products are not included in the base license anymore and you have to pay extra for them. This almost doubles the price for us and will be more than double for many other schools depending upon what they have installed. I have gone back to our reseller and have been told that we do not have a choice as they have already tried to negotiate with MS three times without any success. Moreover, I have been told that it is a global increase so I assume school in all parts of the world are affected by this. I have also looked at the outright purchase option but this is going to cost a fortune and being a small school we can not afford to do so. I believe it is ridiculous how MS have decided to suddenly increase its licensing costs without any notice at all. Since last year, I have been reading about MS increasing prices for others but did not expect it coming to us. I think they are trying to cover the Windows 8(and free Windows 10 upgrade) losses which is not justified. This looks like a bait and switch to me as they gave us unlimited licenses for most server products and then once schools started using them thinking they do not cost anything extra, MS wants money for it now. Fortunately, I did not go too far with this and have only setup exchange with the enterprise license which I will change to standard now but I believe with some of the other products you can not go back. I almost started loving MS this time but they just do not deserve it. I would like to know if this has happened to schools in other countries as well and how much your ICT budget will be affected by this.

Hi all, If you were in the process of setting up a domain for your school network, what are some of the best practices you would adhere to in order to have a secure and efficient network? This is something I will be doing over the half-term to fix a botch job that was done before I started and want to make sure I get it right! Equipment wise, we have two HP Proliant servers with 160gb of ram and 12 cores each. There are around 200 computers (desktops and laptops) in the school and then a few MFP and BYOD devices. Thanks a bunch

Hi all MCSA exams have further discounts if you are a student, my question is here since most of us have edu email address and my edu email has been verified and can receive student discount. However, I am not a student and working full time. Is this legally ok? illegal? or somewhere in between? Cost per exam with student discount is USD 91 Looking forward to your input.
