Just thought I'd share this little nugget of humility (or is that humiliation) as the penny just dropped. The problem I was having was a VPN LAN to LAN connection kept dropping between my workshop remote site and the unit at home. I had the Keep Alive option setup on the dial-out profile so I couldn't figure out what was going wrong until I realised that the target IP address might be important. Until my light bulb moment I had pointed the ping target at a Google DNS server but now the IP is an internal IP address on the target network and surprise surprise the connection stays active and rarely drops at all. Feel free to pour scorn on such a basic n00b error but figured I'd share this horrific admission in case there are others of similar challenged nature

My homework for school is to answer questions on a forum about connectivity. I will not be able to answer very technical questions, but any basic queries which you need answering please do ask and i will attempt to answer some. Thanks Jimmih

Hello, Here at our school we have a curriculum IP range and an admin IP range. Being the ICT technician my computer frequently needs to connect to both to manage some printers, resources and perform certain tasks. Our server has two network cards which are both patched into our network and on the same domain. All the switches are attached (i.e. there is no physically seperate admin / curriculum network). My question is- is it possible to operate on both these networks at the same time from one machine? If not- what could I do to make the process easier?

OK, not exactly Edu (directly) hence the general chat. However the Connection Voucher scheme could be well received by some members of this fine forum. More here If you're anything like us, money from Govt coffers is seldom sniffed at

Changed from automatically assigning IP to manually assigning a few different free IPs with the relevant settings for subnet mask, DNS servers, gateway etc and this still didn't work. Another thread recommended uninstalling the network interfaces and then scanning for hardware changes which solved a similar issue, but that did not work in my case either. Any suggestions?

Hi, For some weird reason about four of our Win7 64-bit PC's have started failing to be able to contact our DHCP server. Just getting 'Unauthorised network' in the connection settings and can't change it from 'Public' EDIT: IT NOW SAYS 'UNIDENTIFIED NETWORK' and the 'unauthorised' bit has gone... :-/ It's very strange as they were fine before. They are connected to a switch in a cab on the top floor which is fibred to another cab on the lower floor. This then connects via CAT 5e to our main switch. Does anyone know what it could be? I have tried the following already: - Removing the ethernet adaptor and reinstalling - ipconfig /release and ip config /renew (when doing this it fails to renew, even though it gets an IP assigned on boot up) - Removing from domain but then failing to be able to rejoin Help appreciated as it's driving me nuts!

Welcome back to the new school year! We hope the summer treated you well and all of your projects were completed. For a limited time, we are running a discounted rate of £295 (per day), plus expenses, on all on-site surveys booked between now and the end of the year. If you’re experiencing any problems with your wireless solution, concerned with potential blackspots or would like to start preparing for a future wireless upgrade, then please get in touch and take advantage of this offer. If you are considering a potential upgrade the survey requires one of our wireless engineers visiting your site and running a multitude of wireless tests. They will measure for packet loss, maximum throughputs, and signal coverage and signal strength to accurately predict your wireless performance and kit list. This is charged out at a daily rate. Once all the data has been collected, the engineer will draw up your detailed wireless report and live heat maps. We have a lot of client’s approach us with an existing wireless solution that they have invested heavily in, but that isn’t delivering on its promises. You may be experiencing interference, dead spots or connectivity issues to name but a few. We can use our wireless know-how, trained engineers and specialist software to analyse your site and perform and Troubleshooting and Health Check exercise to find the source of and solution for your problems. Please let me know of any questions. If you would like to look at booking a survey please send me a PM.

Hi. I have two windows 8.1 machines suddenly not accepting group policy or mapping shares. I can ping external websites and ping the server. I'm at my wits end. Everything was fine until yesterday and now this. Any help available? So far I have removed and rejoined domain, deleted dns and dhcp records and uninstalled and reinstalled network adapter. Gpupdate brings back failed due to lack of network connectivity to a domain controller.

Good Morning All, So I'm having an issue with my network. I have full bars for many students, but they can't get anywhere online. They constantly get the "This webpage is not available" or "You are not connected to a network". I think that there is an issue with the AT&T and TWC hot spots that are flooding our devices on all 2.4 and many 5.0 channels. I try to block them in intrusion detection, but it seems to make the issue worse. When I look at the device I see that I have users on, but they are only on for a few minutes. There are always 1 or 2 users that are on for 40+ minutes, but the majority seem to on for 1-4 minutes. Also I notice that when I go to see who is online, I'll have a few associated and about 400+ unassociated. Could this be cause my device to be maxed out, even though they aren't officially associated. I figure that there has to be some association because there is a transfer of packets, even though they are minute, which is telling the IAP's that they have reached their max amount. Does this sound possible? Please let me know if you have any advice or info because I'm beating my head against the wall. Thanks Cfinch

Has anyone experienced a problem with the latest apple TVs not connecting to the web. We have a vlan the bypasses our webfilter (light speed) and routes directly to web via our firewall (fortigate) Old apple TVs will connect just fine bit the latest ones will not. I'm guessing there is a slight change in protocol perhaps that our firewall doesn't like. Many thanks S

Hi Guys, Typically last thing on Friday our RM CC4 network decided it didn't want to go back to school and stopped letting users connect and disconnected our ICT office from the network. Went in yesterday and fixed the issue with users not being able to login (Problem with some RM services) but our office is still disconnected from the network. The machines are still in AD and checked the switches the ports are connected to are ok, restarted etc but still no joy :S i can't login to our switches as the council have control on them so have to wait until Monday. I also tried the PCs in another room and they work fine so nothing with the actual PC's. The signal lights on the back of the computers are still flashing away so there is a connection but on the computers you can't access the internet, intranet and shared drives etc. They just show the limited or low connectivity icon in the task bar. Any one have any ideas what it could be? Thanks
