Our PFI partner is under the impression that they will need to rip all the cat 5e cabling out of their 8 year old building and replace it with cat6 in time for the BSF hand over in 2012. The person stating this couldn't tell me what the difference would be but I don't think it was him that made the decision either. As this will no doubt cost the school is there an arguement to support this? We have fibre between the cabinets and most desktop machines are still only 100Mb/s. I accept that data use will go up but I don't anticipate it going up that much that 1Gb/s to the desktop will be an issue and IIRC cat6 only supports speeds greater than this over short runs. Even at the end of the first BSF contract (approx 8 years from now (IIRC its a 5 year contract and we get handed over in 3 years)) I don't think 1Gb/s to the desktop will be limiting based on our progress over the last 8 years and everyone's predictions that everything is going wireless to personal learning devices. Please let me know your comments. Polite ones, so that I can use them to support my argument that this replacement is not necessary. Thanks

Very professional company for all your network cabling needs! We've been using them at Springwood High for at least 10 years now. Details are at: Activenet Data Solutions If you require any further info please contact me on: [email protected] (Springwood High School, Kings Lynn).

Just stumbled over this info about the launch of a new Validator tool... the Validator-Pro and Validator-Pro-NT. The Validator and Validator-NT have been cost effective alternatives to Fluke testers for years... hopefully this will be the case with the new kit which promises to do fiber, wifi and PoE testing! Hello. I am embarking on making my own network cabling and installing my own network points in the school where I work. Could someone please give me a nice comprehensive list of the tools and items (including suppliers) that I will need so I can get to work. I already have CAT 5e cabling but that's it! What else do I need and where is the best place to get it from in the UK? Thanks in advance!

Hey, Can anyone point me in the direction of a decent supplier for cable making tools? I need... The cable itself (cat5), rj45 ends, a crimping tool and a cyclops. Cheers

Hi, For some weird reason about four of our Win7 64-bit PC's have started failing to be able to contact our DHCP server. Just getting 'Unauthorised network' in the connection settings and can't change it from 'Public' EDIT: IT NOW SAYS 'UNIDENTIFIED NETWORK' and the 'unauthorised' bit has gone... :-/ It's very strange as they were fine before. They are connected to a switch in a cab on the top floor which is fibred to another cab on the lower floor. This then connects via CAT 5e to our main switch. Does anyone know what it could be? I have tried the following already: - Removing the ethernet adaptor and reinstalling - ipconfig /release and ip config /renew (when doing this it fails to renew, even though it gets an IP assigned on boot up) - Removing from domain but then failing to be able to rejoin Help appreciated as it's driving me nuts!

Happy lunch time I was hoping that any PFI school people out there might be able to give some advice to a school who are under contract, and are being charged WAY over price for installation of double sockets and running cables through ceiling. They are looking at upgrading their wireless and need new points, but it's looking to be around £1000 per double socket - totalling far more than the hardware will! Any advice on what can be done on this? Thank you all in advance, Sarah
