We have recently been granted £7000 to replace our 5 switches and I would like to ask for some recommendations on HP switches. We currently have a mixture of HP 2610-24 and 48 port 10/100MB non PoE switches and would like to replace them with the HP 2530-48G and wondering if they would be a good fit or if to go with some other HP switches. We currently have 250 users on our current network using desktops, laptops, macs, iPads, CCTV and smartphones. Any recommendations would be welcome. Thanks

Morning my fellow heroes of EduGeek... I'm afraid I come crawling for assistance again as I am feeling thoroughly stumped at this juncture. I've bought a load of 3Com 2928-HPWR switches to let us plug in some PoE WAPs, and I'm trying to connect the switches to the network via fibre uplinks. For whatever reason, though, the switches utterly refuse to actually connect to the network I know all the physical gear is ok - after many combinations of SFP transceivers, patch cables and other switches - and the only common link is the new switch(es). Somewhere in the configuration (I imagine) is something that is stopping the fibre uplink from working properly. As I look at the switch back in my main server room (that this fibre run goes to) - if I plug the SFP module I'm using into any of my current switches, the port shows up as active on said server room switch and everything is dandy. As soon as I plug the fibre module into the new switch, it shows as inactive. I've compared and contrasted settings across the different (but all 3Com) switches and everything seems the same. The manual is no use whatsoever. The switch is otherwise working (transmitting power, I am logged into it via web interface on a laptop). Just something, somewhere, is stopping the switches actually talking to each other. It lights up this end on the new switch, but never flashes for activity, and the other end never lights up at all. This is getting excessively frustrating now, it's starting to take the somewhat. So I beg of you fellow geekers - any advice? Any clues? Anything incredibly obvious I have so far missed?

How compatible are hp switches with generic SFP fibre modules? We are looking at changing away from D-Link gear (previously good but quality has just dissapeared lately) to hp switches. Currently the existing backbone is handled by multiple fibers to each switch and I was wondering if anyone else had tried generic SFPs with hp gear and had sucess. This would save us from having to rebuy a whole bunch of SFPs that are currently very new and no were near replacment age.

Hi all, can anyone help me with a really frustrating problem we have atm. We're running Win 2K3 and 2K8 svr, XP Pro clients on a mix of Managed & unmanged Pro Curve switches to a HP gl core with STP enabled and are getting a load of PCs hanging when accessing shared network drives on our main shared area svr (running 2K8) from our ICT dept. via either a fibre connected HP2524 or fibre connected Netgear Gigabit sw. This is a new server and was a replacement for a really old poor spec. device that we have had the same issues with. Network mapping when logged on to the shared drives appears ok but when a number of PCs access the Public area e.g. 1 class of 28 accessing a limited number of shared files this basically lags and some don't later recover the PCs in the room. Result - 10 - 15mins of lag and the switches show what looks like from the activity lights a stack of broadcasts. Odd though - other rooms can be working on their home drives (networked to a different svr) and be fine. Other related issues have been lengthy log on times - upto 20 mins! and application crashes - normally when accessing shared areas. We've looked at managed switch logs - nothing of note but packet captures show have shown a big proportion of ARP requests. Any ideas anyone? we've looked at most things we can think of and well ...

Hi guys, Bit stumped, wondered if anyone has any ideas. Yesterday at around 2:30pm, both our SAN switches lost connection to the SAN. Hyper-V tried to failover but because the connection to the SAN was lost, we were flooded with disk IO errors and most the servers seem to have corrupted, not to the point they are completed screwed, they did come back up... but enough that we are having an absolute world of issues this morning, I have had to restart all the VM's and they were running disk checks, clearing entries for corrupt files. What is confusing me is that most the machines lost connection to the network as well as our cameras back to the NVR we have. Initially before I discovered the SAN was having a fit, I thought one of our access switches in the server room had gone awry, but the SAN switches are directly plugged into the SAN so how did they also lose connection (apologies if I sound dim here and am missing something, I am fairly new to delving into the technicalities of SAN storage) Does this sound like a power issue? a switch issue? a cabling issue? am I potentially missing something? - head full of questions! I do not want this to happen again, obviously, so am trying to work out what on earth happened! Many thanks

We have a HP ProCurve 2900-48G in a classroom but the teacher is rightly complaining about the amount of noise it generates. I've found a couple of threads about silent switches in the past but nothing recent. So far the only solutions I've seen involve replacing or disconnecting fans. I would happily cut a hole in the top of the existing switch and install a large 12v quiet fan but obviously that would void the warranty. Our goal moving forward is to only purchase switches with gigabit ports and 10Gb uplinks but I'm almost positive there aren't any switches that will give us 48xGb ports plus a 10Gb uplink without a fan. Any suggestions on how to overcome this issue? Space isn't a concern so we'd be happy with a less dense 2 or 3RU switch if it meant it ran quietly (POE not required). We considered moving the cabinet but it is too expensive and our suggestion to swap classrooms (with a more lightly used room) was shot down. Other suggestions have included soundproofing the cabinet but if the cabinet temperature gets too high there goes your warranty anyway...

Ghost 11 and Cisco SG200-50 Switches
gr8pretender posted a topic in Network and Classroom Management
Hi everyone. I've combed all kinds of different forums searching for an answer and have yet to find a similar case so I guess I'll start the precedent here. Pretty much our situation is that we have classrooms that we occasionally have to clone with Ghost 11, the switches in place in each room are really slow so we bought these new Cisco switches (SG200-50) to deploy the image. Pretty much our issue is at least a 15% of the clients fail every single time. They are giving a "client timed out" error, it freezes up the ghostcast and slows down the whole process, and a lot of the time even 50% end up failing when all is said and done. We can usually unicast/locally clone them when they fail, even through the switch with enough tries. It seems pretty random so we can rule out ports pc problems, all the managed switches and un-managed switches seem to have this problem. I've read several articles about tree spanning and Symantec has said that its because we need to enable IGMP (which one of my co-workers argues has nothing to do with multi-casting) and I'm not the most knowledgable with this kind stuff so I'm just playing middleman between my co-worker and Symantec/Cisco technicians. Anyone have any ideas how we can get little to none of the clients to fail? -
Hi Everyone, Just have a quick question for the masses. I've worked at several institutions before and I'm trying to gauge what is typical pracitce in an educational environment. When you guys have departments who need additional capacity at their end points (adding a network printer to an office, more workstations, etc.) what do you guys do? Does IT have an additional line ran to the endpoint from the IDF, or does the department pay for it? Perhaps you install a switch at the endpoint and increase capacity there? At my previous university we had a vendor who came out and ran network cabling, do you guys have on staff people that do this, or do you just use one of the methods above. I'm kind of against switches at the end point but that's what they've been doing. I want to talk my CIO into having a vendor who does this on an open PO or case by case basis.

Hello, Here at our school we have a curriculum IP range and an admin IP range. Being the ICT technician my computer frequently needs to connect to both to manage some printers, resources and perform certain tasks. Our server has two network cards which are both patched into our network and on the same domain. All the switches are attached (i.e. there is no physically seperate admin / curriculum network). My question is- is it possible to operate on both these networks at the same time from one machine? If not- what could I do to make the process easier?

Hello, I have an issue on my windows network where Applications pushed out through Group policy will only install if I connect the computer to a miniswitch/unmanaged switch. If it is plugged directly into the port it will not work (The policy will apply but the software will not install). If I then plug that port into a mini switch, then plug that into the computer it pulls down fine. It seems to be only with windows 10 machines that I have noticed it on, from what I can see win 7 machines pull down the software properly. Please could someone help me with this as I am unsure why this would happen. Thank you for your help.

Hi All, Really new to this stuff so please bear with me. We have just taken delivery of four Dell tablets, supplied by Live Register, that are to be used as mobile tills for catering. They have come pre-installed with the necessary software, all I need to do is connect them to the relevant VLAN so they can talk to the catering server and then we can get LR to do the final config. They need to have static IP addresses in the same range and settings as our static tills - the only difference is the WiFi - we've never connected the cashless catering stuff wirelessly. I've done the following: On our WiFi controller (A Meru MC4200) 1) Configured a VLAN with the same number as the catering VLAN on our switches and the same IP settings as far as Default Gateway, IP Address and Subnet Mask are concerned. 2) Configured a security profile with no requirements for passwords etc so I can test stuff easily 3) Set up the SSID to look at the configured VLAN of choice. If I set the wifi adapter of one of the tills to one of the chosen static addresses the device seems to connect (there is no internet connection but this is the case with the other static tills as the system only connects over the internet via the server). Problem is the mobile till will not ping anything, gateway, server other static tills once connected. It can ping itself. Nothing can ping out to the till either. As the network settings are identical to the static tills aside from the fact the static tills are cabled and the mobile tills are not I'm guessing there is something in the WiFi config that I have missed. It's probably pretty basic. Any suggestions?

Hello Everyone, I’d like to get staff & pupils on different IP ranges because using devolved web filtering I can set different levels of filtering for different IP ranges. We already have 3 VLANs setup on our CISCO POP3 (Catalyst 3550) switch, done by the LA. Our admin machines (3) use the admin VLAN (10.121.77.0/24) and their workstations have a static IP config. Both staff and pupils are on 10.74.68.0 -10.74.69.255), I’d like to have our pupils on the 10.74.68.0/23 range and the teaching staff on the 10.74.30.0/24 range but I’m unsure of the following:- 1) Create VLANS 2) Do we have the correct hardware 3) How to issue DHCP to each VLAN (I Am able to give each WLAN a VLAN number though)? 4) If the teaching staff are on 10.74.30.0/24 how will they be routed through to 10.74.68.0/23? 5) Our AppleTV devices will probably be on 10.74.30.0/24 how will pupil ipads connect to them via AirPlay? A basic diagram.

Hey folks, I hope somebody can give me some advice on this. We're basically upgrading all our old 100mb switches from 2008 to 1GB switches in the next couple weeks. We've chosen HP out of the possible hardware vendors as they have a pretty good lifetime warranty, the price is pretty good and the functionality of each seems worth the cost. However, after consulting with Link2ICT, they've basically said that we can't move away from Cisco for our main switches that connect to their end. Apparently according to them the HP switches we are buying will not talk to their Cisco network and thus we must go for Cisco and Cisco only. We're spending about £6,000 on a complete refresh on our switches, a total of 11 switches, and just one of the proposed cisco alternatives is £3-4,000. We may need three of these. Is this true that Cisco switches can only communicate in this manner with other Cisco switches? As to me, an amateur in switching technology and advanced networking, this seems like BS and a total rip off. Any help would be grateful. Cheers, Alex

Hi folks Bit of advice, we currently have a vlan segmented network consisting of 6 HP switches and 1 cisco switch in 2 locations. The Hp switches are all configured for Intervlan routing, we have the following vlans. Admin, Voip, Wireless Access, Guest Wireless, Curriculum and Security. It is a brand new school configured by sub contractors as part of the new build. Everything works fine, and all devices get there correct ip address from our server. We are about to move to a new internet provider, they have given us a range of Ip Addresses for us to use, I have just found out today, with no consultation that the 3rd party provider who are going to facilitate the move has decided to flatten the entire network, and to secure the admin side devices with dhcp reservations . Currently we have about 140 devices connected to the network, including wifi access points, cctv, electronic doors, voip phones and a guest network, all on its own vlans. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the flattening of the network ? Many Thanks. Casa

I've go a tricky one here - My company recently purchased a DLink DGS-3426P 24 port 10/100/1000 +4Gigabit shared port switch. On install I noticed that using certain ports, we could not pull DHCP. It looks like broadcast is being blocked on said ports. Anyway, I decided to have a look in the switch config. Now, the default IP is the IP that the unit has. But the default log in (leaving both u/n and p/w blank) doesn't seem to be working. Tried both telnet and the web (telnet connects, just can't authenticate). Could the manual be wrong on the default? I'm a bit sketched that this switch is an RMA unit or something as: A) It seems like someones played with the config on a few ports B)The default password seems to have been changed Oddly, the IP wasn't changed, though. So I guess my main question(s) are, does anyone know if the default logins should be blank; and if so, is there either a backdoor or a factory reset (that doesn't require admin). Is there a known break key for the Dlink switches? Cheers J

I have upgraded our edge switches. I have a surplus of Cisco Catalyst switches, 2950, 3500 series, some are POE. They range between 6-10 years old and are functioning. We would be happy to donate to a school or a charity in need of such equipment. We would need proof of your school or charity and a letter stating that we have recycled the equipment according to UK law. Be in touch if you are interested Cheers, David.

Hi, For some weird reason about four of our Win7 64-bit PC's have started failing to be able to contact our DHCP server. Just getting 'Unauthorised network' in the connection settings and can't change it from 'Public' EDIT: IT NOW SAYS 'UNIDENTIFIED NETWORK' and the 'unauthorised' bit has gone... :-/ It's very strange as they were fine before. They are connected to a switch in a cab on the top floor which is fibred to another cab on the lower floor. This then connects via CAT 5e to our main switch. Does anyone know what it could be? I have tried the following already: - Removing the ethernet adaptor and reinstalling - ipconfig /release and ip config /renew (when doing this it fails to renew, even though it gets an IP assigned on boot up) - Removing from domain but then failing to be able to rejoin Help appreciated as it's driving me nuts!

Over the last 12 months, we have seen a lot of interest in the Ruckus ICX switch portfolio. If you are planning a networking upgrade they’re well worth a look. One of the key takeaways clients have liked is their lifetime warranty that provides Next-Business Day replacement should the unit fail. You also get software and maintenance patches included. In addition, a lot of schools have liked that they can manage and configure their switches via a SmartZone, even if they don’t have Ruckus Access Points. This allows for easier management and single pane of glass approach to their networking management. We really like their licensing feature that allows you to buy a solution that suits you now with the opportunity to upgrade your uplink ports. Their pricing is extremely competitive in the EDU space. If you would like more information on the ICX portfolio or would like us to look at putting forward a topology proposal please send me a PM. Other benefits include: Simple, scalable stacking Standard Ethernet via SFP+ providing long-distance stacking (up to 10 km) Up to 12 units per stack In Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) for patch updates Hitless failover of management Power & Performance Non-blocking, no over-subscription Multi-Gig 1/2.5/5/10/40/100G Leading power density: PoE/PoE+/uPoE/PoH (95 W) PoE on all ports with one power supply PoE+ available on all ports
