Hello, Our security partner Fortinet is running a webinar looking ahead at IT trends and cybersecurity challenges for 2022. It is running on Thursday 16th December from 10.00-11.00. They will be looking at: • Ongoing work-from-anywhere models • Digital experience requirements • Increasing sophistication of cyber threats • IT/OT integration This isn't EDU specific more of a general and broader view. Net-Ctrl isn't affiliated with this is in any way - just something I thought might be of interest to some of you. In addition, registering to attend in no way ties you to Net-Ctrl. There is a sign-up form in order to register with the basic information required. They normally release a recording post-session which I assume will also be the case here so if you are interested but can't attend the session it could still be worth signing up. To register, please follow the below link: https://global.fortinet.com/emea-lp-en-2022industrytrends Thanks, Josh

Hello all, I know online events are taking over right now - but this could be a great one! On the 18-19th November Palo Alto will be running their Ignite conference virtually. This is usually an in-person event with a fairly large fee for a ticket. Due to the current events this is being taken online and made FOC for all clients and those that work with Palo Alto Networks. Palo describes the event as: “We believe you should never have to choose between being secure today, or being ready for what comes next. Join visionary leaders, industry experts and global cybersecurity innovators to advance your digital transformation and connect with like-minded individuals around the world at this year’s premier event.” and as an overview will include: • Dig deep on Palo Alto Networks portfolio of best-in-breed products. • Hear from keynote and guest speakers on what’s coming next for our digital world. • Get best practices to accelerate digital transformation with integrated, automated and simple cybersecurity solutions. It's free to register This is a great event for existing and potential Palo clients or just those interested in the security landscape – they always have some great speakers and lots of thought leadership content. They have just announced their special guests, which include: • James Corden - Actor, Writer, and Television Host • Malala Yousefzai - Co-Founder of Malala Fund and Nobel Laureate • Marquez Brownlee - YouTuber and Tech Enthusiast • Dr. Condoleezza Rice - Secretary of State (2005-2009) There's more info on the link above - including full agenda, speakers etc etc. Please note the link above was provided to us by Palo Alto Networks - so does include us as a reference - this doesn't mean anything more than using our referral link - we don't benefit in any way - just in case anyone was curious.

With Easter now behind us, we, and i'm sure a lot of you will be looking ahead and planning for the summer. One of the biggest challenges we face is letting our clients, and Edugeek members know everything that we do. With this in mind, I wanted to take this opportunity to reintroduce Net-Ctrl - who we are and what we do. We have been an EduGeek sponsor for 8 years, as an organisation, we have been running for 17 years. We have our own in-house engineering team and experienced projects managers. We have specialised in a number of technology areas - many of you will know us for Ruckus - but we do a lot more than that. For each of the partners below, we have trained engineers and projects guys that can design and configure the solutions. We can install them, cable them and support them. We're a consultative company and if the solution isn't right for your school we will tell you. In most cases below, we're able to arrange for demo units to be sent to you for testing. Our portfolio is split into two categories - Secure Managed Infrastructure and Building Management Solutions. Those listed below are our EDU partners. Secure Managed Infrastructure Partners: Ruckus Networks - Wired and wireless solutions and Cloudpath onboarding solutions. Palo Alto Networks - Next-generation firewall and endpoint protection Fortinet - Firewall solutions iboss - innovative APT defence, web security and mobile security solutions Juniper Networks - Firewall and networking solutions Building Management Solutions CEM - Powerful access control and security management systems with fire detection and intruder integrations MOBOTIX - High-Resolution IP-CCTV camera and video door entry systems Bodet- Bell Systems, class change and PA systems NEXUS - Rapidly deployable, battery powered and RF-based, school lockdown solutions Traka - Intelligent key cabinets and lockers systems Netgenium - IP PoE speakers and lockdown technology Aperio - wireless door handles and lock technology Please do keep us in mind for any potential projects you have in the pipeline.

Hi all, We currently have our broadband provided through the county council. They also manage the schools firewall. Part of the agreement is a serial/licence for a local install of Smoothwall (Not Proxy just web filtering). So, we have Smoothwall installed on a VM purely as an additional layer of web filtering with AD integration etc. We are looking at alternative providers for our broadband next year, in this case it would mean that local SmoothWall install would no longer be licensed. The alternate solution would include a firewall upstream to the web filtering. We have had SmoothWall installed and running for about 7 years and know the product pretty well so would like to keep it. First things first I contacted SmoothWall directly for a cost to licence it ourselves. I nearly fell off my chair, the cost was nearly as much as the broadband supply. Completely out of budget by around 400% So, can i please ask, 1. Can anyone please recommend an alternative product that can replace SmoothWall? (It can be open source or paid as there will be a small budget available for this.) 2. I see many schools on EduGeek use SmoothWall, are you SmoothWall licenses included with your BB supply? I cant believe that anyone (especially a school) would be able to afford the prices quoted? 3. Can anyone please let me know how comparable the Open source Smoothwall alternative is? Is it more than the support? I've had a very quick look at.. untangle, pfsense, squid, websense. But im just unsure if these are as fully featured as Smoothwall? Thanks in advance!

The Forest of Dean Multi-Academy Trust has future-proofed its technology and delivered a safe digital learning environment to its students and staff with a full-stack Cisco Meraki solution from Redway Networks. The Trust wanted to update its infrastructure and with growth front of mind set out to find the right vendor and best-fit solution. After a thorough evaluation, the Trust chose Redway Networks to conduct a WiFi survey and full network audit to determine performance needs. Redway then recommended a Meraki solution (including WiFi, switching and firewall) to future-proof the Trust's technology and support its ever-growing ICT real estate. Emily Stigant, IT Manager for the Forest of Dean Trust says: “When Redway Networks demonstrated Meraki and I saw the possibilities it offered us, I was blown away and knew it was the right fit for us." Redway delivered a seamless project and the Trust now has a safe digital learning environment that can be managed efficiently and cost-effectively with the scalability to grow as it on-boards more schools. Emily concludes: "The benefit of having all the Meraki products fully integrated, not just in the cloud, but with each other enables complete network visibility with secure, powerful connectivity and easy multi-site management. Redway Networks delivered an outstanding service with fast equipment sourcing and competitive pricing. We now have complete visibility from network edge to core and Meraki has been a huge game-changer for us." Results so far: · 100% reduction in wireless network issues reported · 50% reduction in network administration time · 25% reduction in time spent on network-wide switch changes and software updates · 25% reduction in daily technician time (previously spent bringing the VPN back online) · 150 worldwide cyberthreats blocked in first 2 weeks · Improved student safeguarding in addition to reduction in CCTV storage costs For any education WiFi or networking requirements, Redway Networks are here to help. Hello, I thought this may be of interest to a couple of you. Fortinet has three no-cost courses available to anyone who is interested in educating themselves on potential threats and how to manage them. I have included the relevant links below - you will need to create a Fortinet account if you don't already have one. A good opportunity to upskill or provide a refresher. IT professionals and those familiar with FortiGate Next Generation Firewall (NGFW): Check out the FortiGate Essentials Training Course. Individuals interested in increasing their cybersecurity awareness: Check out our Network Security Expert courses 1 and 2. NSE 1 is a general introduction to the threat landscape, and NSE 2 looks at the evolution of cybersecurity. The Essentials course is more advanced and includes approximately eight hours of online, self-paced training and one hour of daily live online sessions for lab demos. There’s an additional hour of daily live online sessions for Q&A (following the lab demo), as well as online discussion forums.
