Every year Microsoft holds several 'Unplugged' events which are usually two free half day presentations on their new software. I have been to several of these events and they are quite good with presentations given by knowledgeable people within Microsoft and it is a great opertunity to ask questions and make contacts along with getting a heads up on the latest developments. They are free to attend, you just have to register your name with an email address. This march the events are focused on Office 2010 and Sharepoint 2010 held the first and second half of the day respectivly. Hi all, I'm looking at running a private LAN party where I work, but upon trying to install/run Steam & Battle.Net on my laptop, it won't allow me to connect or sign in, and in the case of Battle.Net, I can't even install it due to not being able to connect to their servers! We use a Lightspeed filtering system, and the device I'm using has been placed in the bypass list, so I'm not being filtered by that appliance The only next step of filtering would be upstream at our internet provider, does anybody have any info about what is needed to be unblocked to use those services? For reference, the services we'd be trying to use are: Steam Misc games on steam, such as Golf With Your Friends, CS:GO etc Battle.Net Games such as Overwatch, WOW etc Any help would be appreciated!

Hi all, A few months ago Square Group, a premium Apple reseller, ran an event around BYOD in education in relation to the iPad. They have just announced they will be running a second event on the 27th September at the Welcome Trust Conference Centre in London, and another on the 14th November in Derby. The event is free to attend and runs from 09.30-16.00, and will provide a great opportunity to learn more about iPads in the classroom and how they can be managed. We attemded the event last year, and thought it was really worth the visit. If you're interested please click here to view the invitation which will tell you a little more about the event, and also provides the opportunity to register. Net-Ctrl will be sending @Aggy and Stuart White our certified wireless technican along to the event as well, so if you fancy meeting/catching up with either of them come along. Hi, apologies if this has been discussed before but I couldn’t find anything on the forums. From the beginning of this academic year we have reintroduced a house system into school. The students are receiving lots of points which is great, but the problem for us comes to reporting on the points totals, specifically concerning House events. For example, PE run a sports afternoon with various competitions happening. At the end of the afternoon points are awarded to the individual winners, but we also look at the bigger picture when it comes to overall House performance and reward points accordingly to each house. The problem occurs at this point since there is no House entity within SIMS (that I’m aware of) that we can assign the points to. As a work around for this we have decided to award these performance points to the House Captains so we can run reports on overall House points totals monthly/termly etc, but the issue arises when we come to run individual student/form points totals. I know that we can remove the overall points totals from the House Captains individual points totals by filtering out the House Event Achievement Types to give more accurate results. Though this is a simple solution that requires little effort, this solution isn’t liked by the staff in charge of the House system since its open to human errors. ie when entering the awards, choosing the wrong Achievement Type would mean that the filters wouldn’t remove the points from the reports when being run so would therefore give false points totals for the House Captains. We can't be the only school that has come across this problem, so I was hoping if anyone knew of a more elegant solution to this, or can anyone suggest any alternative methods of storing points? Ideally we would like to remove the link of Event House points to individual students and somehow award them directly to the House, but we’ve been searching unsuccessfully for a way to do this for a while. (One crazy idea was to create a fake student entry per House to award the points to, but I put a stop to that because it would affect the census etc.) Any and all ideas are welcome Cheers guys Jon

Don't get me wrong I've know about the scheduler since XP but I didn't look at it again in Windows 7! It can now send emails... This is super cool because it can now also trigger upon events in the event log, this means you could get a workstation to email you when a disk event occurs. It can also start when a certain network is available, super useful if you have a program that doesn't deal well with being run before the network is established. Does anyone who realized this 4 years ago, have any cool tasks they deploy to workstations? I've had the same one for 8 years that turns off the PCs at 18:30 but that's it!

I am running an event in London with Juniper Networks on the 29th March at Juniper's offices (EC2R 8AY) and would like to invite the Edugeek community to join us. The content is going to be very EDU focused, and we have some great speakers from Juniper Networks talking about the modern day network and the challenges associated to it (full agenda below). It will also be a great chance to get hands-on with some of their kit, including their new Network Director and Security Director solutions, which look really smart. There is some more information below and on our registration page: Juniper Hands-on Session I really think is going to be a great event, and would really like some of the EduGeek community to join us. Date: 29th March 2017 Time: 10.00-12.30 Location: Juniper Networks. 38 Threadneedle St, London EC2R 8AY Speakers: Stephen Jamieson and Trevor Edwards – Juniper Networks Agenda 10.00 Arrival & Coffee 10.20 Welcome and Introduction 10.30 Meeting the Challenges of Building and Securing a Campus Network 11.00 Juniper Networks Campus Solution Overview. 11.30 Building a manageable Security Model for Education. 12.00 Hands-on Product Demonstrations 12.30 Close & Lunch Followed by refreshments at The Counting House Key session takeaways: • Learn about the architecture required to build an affordable, scalable and highly reliable network. • Address the need for new application models and automation tools • Review traditional perimeter security and how to build a new network that is both open and secure • Learn how to leverage the entire network to manage security policies

Hi all, could anyone tell me if they know a way to enter a search parameter for the "Description" field in the event viewer on Windows Server 2003? I've recently set up auditing of deleted files which seems to be pulling the results up great when you browse through them, but obviously with so many results I need to search, to track down who deleted a particular file I need to search for the file location in the event viewer which is located in the "Description" field - anyone know any way this may be possible? Thanks for any help offered, it is much appreciated! Richard.

Spare monitors I was going to post beg, borrow or steal - but stealing is not to be encouraged. If you have 10 x flat screen monitors in your school that you would like to lend, sell or donate for a Girls in STEM event I'm running in Gateshead last week of January please get in touch. Monitors with DVI input would be perfect, but I'll settle for VGA if that's all that's on offer. I can collect from North West or North East.

Hi All Our SLT are looking at changing the way some of our MIS systems work One of the drawbacks we have is that many apps built for schools are procedural rather than event driven apps. What I mean by that is they depend on the user doing something e.g. running a report, entering data in a marksheet, entering behaviour / achievements In an event driven application it is the event that triggers a process e.g. A detention is created for a student, we might want the creation of that detention to trigger an email to the students head of house, rather than running a report at the end of the day saying "these are the detention students". The event here would be "detention created", trigger process to generate an email. If a student is registered as attended for period 3, but they have no mark 15 minutes into period 4, we might want to generate an alert to the Attendance Officer warning them that we have potential truants, rather than the attendance officer running a report manually. The event in this case would be "time to check for truants" and the process would be alert the attendance officer (using whatever way we wanted to...report / email / txt etc) We are looking to try and find an package that supports event driven processes and schedules, particularly in the areas of behaviour and attendance. We currently uses SIMS / SISRA analytics Many thanks Phil

Please download the full post attached; There is alot of important information about Server R2 and Windows 7 you might want to be aware off Well after the early start on Friday Morning travelling down to Reading the day turned from me being very tired to being very pleased with the whole event. Myself, Chris (Dos_Box), Ric (Ric_) attended the conference on behalf of Edugeek, the Turn-out was very good just over 50 attendees in the end I believe and I think most of them were Edugeek Members. A few Edugeek Members sat with us through-out the conference, SoulFish, Robf, AngryITTechnician and GrumbleDook to name a few Thank You to you guys for showing your faces and for the great conversations. The Whole day was very “geeky” with various employees from Microsoft Talking to everyone as well as Dave Coleman from Twynham School and Alan Richards from West Hatch School both talking about their experiences when Deploying Windows 7 in their schools. Alan Richards was infact the first Person to Deploy Windows 7 Fully in a school in the UK (possibly worldwide) so well done to you! After the conference itself a group of us or the Edugeek Crew as GrumbleDook calls it went out for a few drinks and a lovely meal courtesy of Dos_Box himself cheers for that! It was very nice J apart from GrumbleDook moaning all the way their because he has a very LARGE appetite ;-) poor bloke bet he was starving! Dribbling everywhere hehe. After the meal we went back to the Hotel for more Drinks, and didn’t leave until around 1am thanks to everyone who stayed behind for a drink and a chat! Dos_Box even brought me a “White Russian Cocktail” never had one before and it was very nice indeed! Anyway I won’t go down that route! It was a great night well it was until it was time to go to sleep then I had to put up with Ric Snoring all bloody night ;-) going to buy myself some ear plugs next time!
