I'm an ICT Technician based in the midlands Day to day I support an 800ish 1 to 1 iPad deployment, along with a couple hundred windows machines and laptops and then a handful of printers on top Outside of work I'm an avid photographer and LAN party engineer/host/volunteer - there's a pretty niche joy in setting up a temporary infrastructure capable of handing a few thousand users for it to be ripped down a couple of days later! Currently looking to further my knowledge when it comes to network infrastructure (mainly practicing with the use of a pretty hefty homelab, courtesy of the guys/gals over at /r/homelab) My homelab at the moment consists of a couple of Dell r620's, running a few windows servers, windows clients, a couple of linux boxes - one of which for my Unifi AP controller, a pfSense instance, and a separate r620 loaded with docker images for gameservers See you all around!

Yeah - we have a VLAN set up for it already, which has no access to any of our internal networks for security reasons as it's going to be an event I'm holding outside of school days/hours Essentially the setup is, from a network perspective, a bunch of PCs/laptops connected to a pfSense VM running on a proxmox stack (which also would contain things like grafana graphing for our monitoring, a lancache, local gameservers for any local games etc), on a separated VLAN, which runs back to our Lightspeed filtering appliance - with the internal IP of our pfSense router put on the bypass list for said filtering appliance

Hi all, I'm looking at running a private LAN party where I work, but upon trying to install/run Steam & Battle.Net on my laptop, it won't allow me to connect or sign in, and in the case of Battle.Net, I can't even install it due to not being able to connect to their servers! We use a Lightspeed filtering system, and the device I'm using has been placed in the bypass list, so I'm not being filtered by that appliance The only next step of filtering would be upstream at our internet provider, does anybody have any info about what is needed to be unblocked to use those services? For reference, the services we'd be trying to use are: Steam Misc games on steam, such as Golf With Your Friends, CS:GO etc Battle.Net Games such as Overwatch, WOW etc Any help would be appreciated!

If you're after something purely for throwing files at and nothing more, I would personally just buy a rackable chassis from say, xcase or servercase, buy some high capacity drives, mobo/ram/psu/cpu bla bla, and then just chuck it together - install truenas or another flavour of nas os variants

I'm personally quite a big fan of truenas - has all the features I'll ever need, and more
