Okay so but of a noob to all of this so please bare this in mind. The ICT department of the school I work at has requested Raspberry Pi. What they want is a Pi Net server PC built and in the corner of their department. It will dish out an IP address and an operating system over the internet and students can do projects. This wants to be done so that when a Pi is turned off it will lose all the data and reset as if brand new ready for the next student. Working from operating systems on SD cards would be too hard to keep track of. This being said if the Pi Net server is configured to dish out IP's, I'm concerned that it will dish them out all over the school so I'm trying to think of a way to contain the IP's and Pi. Am I asking for the impossible?

I'm not sure whether this is a Windows 10 post, or a Raspberry Pi post - but I think the Windows 10 is a bit more relevant. What's your thought on Microsoft releasing a free version of Windows 10 for the Pi? I've heard some crazy things - but I think this will be awesome to see it in action: https://dev.windows.com/en-us/featured/raspberrypi2support I'm keen to see the Pi2 when I can get my hands on one.

I use a Pi to display the output from my solar panels. I installed Team Viewer on it so I can remote in from my office, and a timer ti turn the screen off at night. It worked out really well.

Has anyone used Arch Linux before? Is it worth losing the familiarity of Fedora for the lower memory footprint of Arch or should I just stick with Fedora. I'm only thinking of using it as a very basic desktop with a web browser (possibly as a kiosk), just for a bit of fun whern the RasPi comes out later this month.

The Pi's backers have drawn inspiration from the BBC Micro. Produced in the 1980s by Acorn computers for the BBC Computer Literacy Project, they were widely adopted in British Schools. BBC Basic, the programming language which ran on the machines, provided a gentle introduction to the challenges of coding. Now it is set for a revival on the Raspbery Pi (or RasPi as it has become known) BBC News - Raspberry Pi bids for success with classroom coders Raspberry Pi specifications: Cost: Model A $25 (£16) and Model B $35 (£22) Weight: 45g Dimensions: 86mm x 54mm x 17mm Power: 5v micro USB Processor: ARM 11, 700MHz Memory: Model A, 128MB and Model B 256MB Connectivity: 10/100 wired Ethernet on model B Operating system: RISC OS, Linux. Debian, Fedora and ArchLinux will be supported from the start.

I have a Raspberry Pi 4 which I'm attempting to get to open an RTSP stream via VLC at login. I have an sh script which when ran manually opens the stream as expected, however, I can't get it to open automatically when the device logs on. How do I go about doing this? Thanks

I've just seen this on the BBC News site: BBC News - Raspberry Pi and the rise of small computers Happy birthday you minuscule micro and over a million sold to boot. Not shabby, not shabby at all

Hi, My name is Kent Nolan and I work in Tech Support for PaperCut. A while back I had the idea of running a competition that involved people coming up with the most creative/fun script they can make. We've seen some funny scripts in the past that have come through support, mainly the one about the IT guy who forwarded every fifth print job through to the principal's office, resulting in concert tickets being snapped up by a lucky assistant. It is scripts like that one that lead me to this idea; how geeky can you make these scripts? There are plenty of people who are better at JavaScript than I am - in fact my example script is pretty lazy, have a look at the code. Chris Dance (one of the PaperCut founders) has written a script too and that one is pretty impressive. And if you win, first place is a Raspberry Pi with all the trimmings, second and third place get a Raspberry Pi unit too. If your script doesn't win a Raspberry Pi but it’s really geeky, we have some ThinkGeek vouchers to give away. If you want to play, check out our competition page and when you’re ready, you can enter by either: Posting your script as an attachment below. Linking us to your blog. Creating a GitHub branch for it (also post a link below). Or by emailing it to the following address: [email protected] If you have any questions, let me know, I’ll be lurking around. Good luck, have fun.

Is anyone else here planning on buying a Raspberry Pi and putting Fedora on it?

I woke up this morning, looked out the window, the sun hit my face and put me in a bit of a sharing kind of mood! I suppose a little bit of self promotion mood as well sorry So here goes. Over the past few weeks I have setup and installed an LCD Display on our Techies office door after having it changed to some sort of sound proofed lead lined door that the pupils could not here us shouting come in at all! I also had another reason as you will read (more of an excuse to play really) I have wrote up a quick overview if you are interested with some pictures here kism3t1: My Work and all code is available at the bottom of the page for anyone wanting a look. It might be a nice addition to your office? It is controllable over the network with a simple python server/client app (The IP and ports are hardcoded im afraid) I had to keep it simple for the pupils, plus im a bit simple We really do use this everyday and thought it might be nice to share with everyone, so hope you like it.

Am looking for thoughts, experiences and comments on a proposal from our Schools Service to push Raspberry Pi's as a replacement for desktop PCs. They'll be running an office suite, be used for surfing the internet and accessing Office 365 on a daily basis in primary schools. I do have my views on this which I will share but wanted to see if my views were in-tune with other IT professionals working in schools? Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

can anyone please help? I am trying to set up some Raspberry pi on an RM CC4 network using dvi/hdmi adapters as space is limited. The dvi/vga switch on the side of the monitor is not allowing me to switch between the 2 on some of the machines. On some of them it will work then it won't, reverting to the VGA display after a few seconds. I have tried changing the HDMI cables and switching adapters and trying a different Pi. Can anyone please advise? I have a year 6 code club after school who are looking forward to using the Pi and will be disappointed. Any advice gratefully received Mel

My Raspberry Pi now refuses to boot. Steps taken. It was working earlier this week but has now only got the red power light showing. I have reformatted and re imaged the sd card and swapped to another known working one. I have changed the power adapter and tested the other one on a Samsung Gs2 which works. Testing with a multimeter between tp1 and tp2 shows 5v. Everything on the board looks the same as it did before. Unfortunately I have missed element14's opening hours today so will have to wait until Monday to give them a call to see if they will replace it.

ARM chips are the most widely-produced processor family in the world; they have historically been used in cell phones and embedded applications, and are increasingly used in tablet devices and low-power-consumption servers. The Fedora-ARM project is an initiative to bring Fedora to this processor family. More Info about ther ARM builds for the Raspberry Pi can be found here: Architectures/ARM - FedoraProject

Is bash a prgramming language suitable for use in education, or does it just make kids lazy? "...Bash is fantastically powerful but I would never introduce it to my students, unless of course they already have programming experience and they have a need for it. Even then I would choose C over bash scripting... " Bash - Programming | Educational applications | Forum | Raspberry Pi

I've been having a few chats since I put up this blog post a few days back and feel I should put up a discussion in the forums rather than keeping it in the blogs: Goodbye old boy - Retiring our HTPC - Blogs - EduGeek.net Once the kids Wii arrived on Christmas day it became apparent that almost all of the reasons we had been using a media PC for (over an 8 year period) had become redundant in our house. These primarily were: Being able to access and record digital TV without a freeview box As above but for satellite Gaming on the TV Providing blu-ray playback Storing digital photos/movies Internet access Now, a lot of these features were added over a period of time and as things in the home entertainment market progressed almost all of these reasons were replaced with affordable dedicated devices that provided far better functionality, such as a blu-ray player, Tivo box and the Wii for gaming (It's for the kids...honest!). That is not to say that this will be the case for everyone. A newly built media PC can provide, at little cost, all of the functions listed above for those who need it and don't want cable contracts or have space issues or just need something more portable. But for us to bring the media pc up to speed it would have involved buying new HD tuners, graphics card and motherboard/processor/RAM in the next year. In short, almost a whole new setup. However, we still need some of the features that it provided, just delivered differently. Primarily amongst these is storage. We need somewhere were we can place photos, music, movies etc, and now that NAS boxes are affordable, we can have a couple of terabytes at hand in a small, low powered, networked chassis that can be available 24/7 from our laptops. So I ordered a duel bay Zyxel one in the sales On top of this we still need to have internet access on the living room TV for browsing, YouTube and other online media. For this I'm getting a Raspberry Pi that can be powered either from the TV's USB port or by separate mains adaptor. Running XMBC it should also enable us to access the NAS for photos and movies (our TV is a few years old and not DLNA enabled). I'm also toying with the idea of getting a cheap Android tablet such as this:55509 - STORAGE OPTIONS - SCROLL BASIC PLUS V2 7" ANDROID | CPC to go in the kitchen and stream music/radio into an old set of Creative speakers we have fitted there, as well as possibly into the bedroom. So, if you have any thoughts or ideas you want to add to this little project (I'll keep you all posted on how it all goes on) please feel free to add them. But I do feel that the next big (yet affordable) step that any self respecting geek can do is to get some centralised storage in the house and if you have already done this please let me know what you have done with yours and what pitfalls (if any) I should be looking out for.

Spare monitors I was going to post beg, borrow or steal - but stealing is not to be encouraged. If you have 10 x flat screen monitors in your school that you would like to lend, sell or donate for a Girls in STEM event I'm running in Gateshead last week of January please get in touch. Monitors with DVI input would be perfect, but I'll settle for VGA if that's all that's on offer. I can collect from North West or North East.
