Drawn in by the fun topic title no doubt, I'm looking for a bit of guidance. I have a mixed Win/Mac environment and having problems with home folder redirection on the Mac machines. Pretty sure they problem lies on the Windows (Server 2008 R2) AD side. A few users work, and as far as I can tell because they have the SMBHome attribute. The rest don't work and don't have that. I see no obvious connection between them. Getting a little help from Apple and they want me to check/do this OS X, OS X Server: Active Directory attributes required to be accessible to OS X computer account objects I don't know how though. Hopefully than wasn't too light on details. Any pointers?

Forgive any potential noobness with this query. I'm still in the learning phase of my job as an IT Technician. Anyway, I am configuring the backups for a school. They have 2 brand new QNAP TS-212 Devices and I am using Windows Server Backup to do the backing up. So far, I have setup a schedule and selected both devices as the destination disk(s). What I want to know is will it backup the same data to both devices or will it pick at random or pick only one device to do the backup? If the latter is the case, what would you suggest I do if I want to utilize both devices to their potential?

There comes a time where roaming profiles need to be backed up, however, Windows 7 and Server 2008R2 does not allow you to access the roaming profile folder unless the user has specifically given access. Here is a quick logon script I wrote to deal with this issue. 'This Script Sets the Permissions on Windows 7 Roaming Profiles so that we in ICTS can back them up 'It runs in user context 'If something goes wrong....Seek Louis, he may know how to fix it. 'Another thing.... you need to use ObjNetwork.Username to get the username On Error Resume Next Set objNetwork = wscript.CreateObject("wscript.network") 'Allows the Script to Access Username Set Command = Wscript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") 'Allows the Script Access to the shell (CMD) SetPerms = "icacls.exe \\atuin\louis\test\icaclcs_test /grant administrators:(F) /T" 'File Path which Administrator needs permissions to should be Example: \\Servername\Profiles$\" & ObjNetwork.Username & "_profile.v2" Dim objFSO Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") 'Allows the script to create a file or folder strPermsFldr = "\\atuin\louis\" & ObjNetwork.Username & "_profile.v2\appdata\Roaming\.PermsChk\" 'Where the folder will be stored to check permissions. Should be Example: \\Servername\Profiles$\" & ObjNetwork.Username & "_profile.v2\appdata\Roaming\.PermsChk\" If objFSO.FolderExists(strPermsFldr) Then ' MsgBox "The folder exists! The Journey Ends Here" 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. Else ' MsgBox objNetwork.Username 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. ' MsgBox "The folder does not exist! Please wait a moment whilst it is created" 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. objFSO.CreateFolder strPermsFldr ' MsgBox "Permissions Will now be set, this may take a while" 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. Command.Run (SetPerms) ' Msgbox "Permissions Have Now Been Set" 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. End If 'Wscript.Echo "Permissions Successfully Set!" 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. This script should be saved as a VBS and the file paths should be set to match your network environment. Hope this is of use to anybody. Louis

The FACTS: Server 2008 R2 Primary and Secondary DNS Servers Third Party controlled Router and web hosting New piece of hardware - CCTV system with network connection Man - Exploring DNS for the first time. I have set a static IP address on the CCTV box So i have been passed a CCTV box which the school i am with wishes to be able to access externally, as this was an option when sold to them. I have set a static IP address on the CCTV box and then i was required to open 3 ports on he firewall pointing at the IP address to allow this to work internally and externally. I spoke with the company who manufacture this kit and they recommended the ports to open and so this has happened. Being a school, we have our router and web hosting all managed by an external company. I sent them a change request and they have set these tasks and also have added internal and external DNS Records. Now, this is where i am stuck as i believe I have to make changes to our internal DNS. Set up a New Zone? A records? CNAME? It is all a little bit mind blowing and i am reading frantically but, could really do with some help. Here hoping. Look forward to hearing from anyone. It's a cold and lonely place out there.

I am not too sure if I have posted this in the right forum, but the problem concerns a 2008 R2 server, so here goes: We are currently having problems saving Word 2007 files onto our Windows 2008 R2 Standard server. Excel files sometimes cause the same problem. This has happened in the past and then resolved itself after an hour or so, but this time it hasn't gone away. The Word files open normally, although sometimes much slower than you would expect for a 150 to 500 KB file. However, when we come to save the files everything seems to come to a halt. If we use 'Save', Word stops responding for a few moments before resuming. Next there is a bar graph display showing progress, (usually only seen when saving much larger files). This process can take anything up to about thirty seconds for a typical 150 KB letter file. Finally, Word displays an error message saying "X:\folder\sub folder\letter.doc is currently in use. Try again later." If we try to save the file with a new file name exactly the same thing happens, (with the 'Save As' dialogue box not responding for a few seconds before resuming). Sometimes we can save the file with a new name once, but cannot save it again unless we also change the file name again. There seem to be several common factors here: Firstly; this applies to all clients on the network, and all Word (and Excel) files kept on it. Secondly, the files (or their file names) are saved, but with zero file length. (If we open these files there is just a blank page; which is very worrying!) Thirdly, it doesn't seem to matter which network drive we use on the 2008 R2 server, or which folder. Fourthly, we can save files to a local drive, and then copy them to the original folder on network drive without any problems at all, (even when using the same file name). As an experiment, I have also been able to save the files to a test server (a spare W7 x64 workstation) that I set up for the purpose. Finally; this only seems to affect MS Office files. Other files, such as Adobe Photoshop and In Design files, which are much, much bigger, are unaffected. Having searched various online forums this seems to be a very common problem, affecting several generations of MS Office and MS Server, but nobody seems to have found any solutions. Does anyone here have any ideas, as I have the feeling I might be spending the weekend with a stack of installation disks, and I would far rather know what the problem is first? Best regards, Nigel.

Hi All, This has been puzzling me for a while and I’m sure I’m missing something really simple! I set up my KMS on a server 2008 r2 machine, as I added new server 2008 r2 machines it activated them fine via KMS. But now I’m adding Windows 7 machines they don’t activate! Office 2010 activates no problem. I can see in the event viewer the new Windows 7 machines are commutating with KMS but no activation. Any ideas what I’m doing wrong? Thank you

I've recently completed a VMM course and as a result I found out that most of my servers have been configured wrong. Don't worry it's not as bad as it sounds just a few tweaks required here and there. However, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find the time to make the changes and migrate the VM's to new homes.(This has to be done as the cluster is set up incorrectly). So what I'm after is someone who can come in and do a Hyper-V tidy up and get all my hosts under VMM. Suggestions anyone?

Hello! I am in the process of building a new domain for my district and I'm trying to import bulk users using csvde (which is new to me). I keep getting a DN syntax error but I can't find what's wrong. I did a dsquery to look up the DN of users I've created manually and followed that. Below is the csv I'm trying to use, the csvde error log, and a line from dsquery. I'm about to pull my hair out! Thanks in advance! csv: DN,gn,sn,sAMAcount, displayName, password, userPrincipalName, homeFolder, description, objectclass "CN=Bulk Test,OU=Test,DC=eastguernsey,DC=eguernsey,DC=k12,DC=oh,DC=us",Bulk,Test,bulk.test,Bulk Test,12345,[email protected],\\eg2008dc1\bulk.test\;h:,test,user error log: Connecting to "(null)" Logging in as current user using SSPI Importing directory from file "testuploadbulk.csv" Loading entries 2: "CN=Bulk Test,OU=Test,DC=eastguernsey,DC=eguernsey,DC=k12,DC=oh,DC=us" Attribute 0) gn: Bulk Attribute 1) sn: Test Attribute 2) sAMAcount: bulk.test Attribute 3) displayName: Bulk Test Attribute 4) password: 12345 Attribute 5) userPrincipalName: [email protected] Attribute 6) homeFolder: \eg2008dc1bulk.test;h: Attribute 7) description: test Attribute 8) objectclass: user Add error on line 2: Invalid DN Syntax The server side error is "The parameter is incorrect." 0 entries modified successfully. We have implemented a GPO with Applocker configured. On the whole it is working just fine, allowing login scripts to run, blocking exe's from memory sticks etc. However we have 2 shares where we put programs that run from the network e.g. \\svr-app1\public\ \\svr-app2\public\networkprograms\ each of these shares has a mapped drive on the windows 7 client computers. (O:\ = \\svr-app1\public\, P:\ = \\svr-app2\public\) Try as I might, I cannot get a rule to allow executeables to run from either of these locations. I have created rules such as Allow Everyone O:\* Allow Everyone O:\*.* Allow Everyone O:\*\ Allow Everyone \\svr-app1\public\* Allow Everyone \\svr-app1\public\*.* Allow Everyone \\svr-app1\public\*\* but none of these work. When trying to run something we get an error like P:\VPLab9\VPLab9.exe This program is blocked by group policy, blah blah blah Anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong? (looking at the event log, the program was blocked because it didnt match any rule)

Hi, This could probably go in a number of different forums, but as the main issue is with Windows 8 Pro, I have posted here. Please feel free to move / duplicate to Server 2008, if that is a better place for it. I am trying to activate a Windows 8 Pro machine on our domain network. In preparation for Win 8, I had already found out about the requirement to upgrade VAMT from 2 to 3 and I have downloaded the ADK and installed VAMT 3 (v6.2.9200.0) on the required 2008 R2 server with SQL 2008. This was a straight forward process and the VAMT service is running. I have installed all of my required keys, of which VAMT is quite happy with. I have also installed KB2757817, which is required when running VAMT 3 on 2008 R2. I ran slmgr /dlv to check that the server was running correctly and got an active response. VAMT has found lots of existing Windows 7 pcs and Office 14 which have been set against the KMS keys that we have been provided with. This tells me that the KMS service is running happily. To make sure I have looked at the Server Manager Event Logs. The KMS log shows lots of Event 12290, where the server is finding machines on the network, however the Windows 8 pcs in these events are returning an error code of 0xC004F042 in their data but, the Windows 7 pcs return 0x0 in their data. The VAMT log on the server shows an error event 1000 VAMT Runtime. Data for this is: Error while updating products: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800706BA): The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA) at System.Runtime.InteropServices.Marshal.ThrowExceptionForHRInternal(Int32 errorCode, IntPtr errorInfo) at System.Management.ManagementScope.InitializeGuts(Object o) at System.Management.ManagementScope.Initialize() at System.Management.ManagementScope.Connect() at Microsoft.Licensing.VolumeActivation.WmiConnection.Connect() at Microsoft.Licensing.VolumeActivation.UpdateProductsProvider.RefreshMachineGenericInformation() at Microsoft.Licensing.VolumeActivation.UpdateProductsProvider.UpdateProducts() on machine using credential On the Windows 8 pc, I have run the slmgr /dlv, which tells me that the Product key ends: J8CK4, however my KMS key on the server ends: FKQW7. This report also says that I need to run slmgr /ato to activate the machine? (Doesn't this defeat the point of a KMS server if each machine has to be activated individually?) The KMS log on the PC is empty. The application log however, contains the following:- Information event ID 12288 - The client has sent an activation request. (The data for this shows the IP address of the VAMT server, so its trying to talk to the right server.) Information event ID 1003 - The software protection service has completed licensing status check. Error event ID 8198 - License Activation (slui.exe) failed with the following error code: hr=0xC004F074. As our network has its own Firewall, I have turned off the firewall on all internal machines on the domain so there should not be any restrictions on any network services or protocols. The RPC service is running on both the server and the Windows 8 PC. As you can see, this is becoming a little frustrating, especially as the VAMT server is functioning fine with all of the Windows 7 and 2008 machines on the domain. I have looked over the internet for any existing support or documents regarding this, but most point at upgrading to the 6.2.9200 version of VAMT, which I am already running. Any assistance you may be able to offer would be much appreciated. Thanks, Barry.

Hello, I'm considering trying out Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 (the standalone hypervisor). Two questions:- 1) how do you manage it remotely? I've got RSAT on my W7 desktop with the Hyper-V Manager. Is that enough? 2) does it support software RAID-1, like the full Server 2008 does, and how do you configure it? The hardware I'm using doesn't have RAID. I've previously used VMware Server running under Windows Server. I'm trying to move to Hyper-V. Thanks.

I am running Server 2008 Enterprise with Win 10 Pro running on laptops and desktops. I have a GPO that locks out authenticated users session after 10 minutes of inactivity. I have confirmed the screensaver works locally. I used infranview to create the custom screensaver. The screensaver just blinks for a second then goes the Win 10 Default CTRL-ATL-DEL screen. Any suggestions?

Hello all, I have a small issue that has been testing me for a bit! We currently have a number of student laptops with all the usual settings applied: no right click, hidden system tray & control panel etc. However, 60 of these laptops are now going to be made available for students to take home. Obviously they are going to have the need to connect the laptops to the home wireless, but obviously we hide the networking icon on the system tray. I have set group policy to show the networking icon but isn't taking effect. Does anyone have experience of laptops being used at home and in school that perhaps has set them up in a different manner? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all, don't you love roaming profiles? Right well we have a 2008 R2 system using Roaming profiles. Each student is setup to \\servername\logons$\%username% and the same is for the GPO setting in Computers\User Profiles to point to the same path. Some google sites have suggested that it should be \\servername\logons$\%username%\ (with that extra back slash at the end). I am correct in asuming that Roaming profiles take their settings from GPO and no - pre build profile is required? like the mandatory. This seems to work well BUT XP clients are having issues, where there is no desktop/start menu/ no GPO settings are copied down. You can imagine I am pulling my hair out, I have gone through all the settings and cleared out the XP profiles just incase they are causing the problem. Does anyone have any ideas? we switched from mandatory to roaming because we had the opposite problem where XP clients worked fine but Windows 7 was randomly not working and students were required to log off and back on possibly up to 3-4 times before it worked. Any help would be great edit: When it goes very slow for XP clients that is when it struggles to properly login. Have done even more testing and one minute it works fine, next problems occur. The slow ones seem to sit there for about 5+ minutes where the ones that work are pretty instant.

Morning guys, I have just posted the below on Server Fault regarding an issue we are having with some of our desktops and users. I was just wondering if any of our friends in the world of academia had also come across this problem? Cheers Adam ---------- We have an interesting issue with one of our server shares, or possibly, our Win 7 desktops. When our users try to save files in a sub folder, either via copy/paste or through an application, to a mapped drive on our DC they receive an error saying "Path not found". They can however browse this folder and open files from it. This is where the "Path Not Found" error doesn't seem to stack up in my opinion. Users can however save files fine in the root folder of the mapped drive, it appears only to affect sub folders. It seems to be random which users and machines this affects. The users can log on to a different machine and be able to save in sub folders fine, on the same mapped drive. Event viewer hasn't been much help either. Currently, the only solution we have found is to image the machines affected which solves the issue. Our servers are Server 2008 R2 with Win 7 Pro desktops. Any help/pointers/suggestions would greatly be appreciated. windows server 2008 - "Path Not Found" when attempting to write to a sub folder within a mapped drive - Server Fault

Hello All, We recently split up our network up into 7 separate vlans due to a shortage of ip addresses. A new core switch (HP E5406ZL ) has been installed which seems to work effectively however I cannot seem to get the WDS (Server 2008 R2) working again. The subnets are as follows - 10.122.192.--- 10.122.193.--- 10.122.194.--- 10.122.195.--- 10.122.196.--- 10.122.197.--- 10.122.198.--- All the servers (DNS,PDC,WDS etc) are on the same subnet (10.122.196.) Can any one help?

Looking to outfit a new IT room capable of running Server 2008 R2 with Hyper-V, probably a max of 3 VMs running at any one time, combination of R2 again and Win 7. This is so I can teach Hyper-V, Server and Win 7, as well as Microsoft courses to my apprentices. I am thinking 8GB so far? But obviously I have a budget!

Hey guys, first off, new to the forums although you have been my main source of information for about 7 months, for some reason I never got round to registering, so no more excuses. Anyway, straight to the point. I am currently working in a college and we have some members of staff that take thier laptops everywhere which doesn't just include home and school but abroad as well, all work related. Either way, I have been called in to help another technician and first on the list was to setup WSUS. Something I have done a plenty of times before, however the issue I foresee happening is that when a member of staff comes back from an extended holiday they are going to have a laptop that is going to require X amount of updates. I am wondering if it is possible to set up the laptop to use WSUS when inside the college and on the network but also set it so it can recognise when its outside the network which will then trigger it to use windows updates from the internet as its second choice. Ensuring the laptop is always kept up-to-date. The college has 6 main servers, one of which is dedicated for WSUS alone, all Server 2008 R2. The setup is all group policy, no professional management systems. So main question, is it possible to have a combination of WSUS and internet, or am I just speaking rubbish. Until someone tells me I am, I might be looking for something thats just not possible.

I am about to embark on a journey of discovery and have fallen at the first stile The story so far .... Transitioning from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 - following some articles from Technet amongst others Exchange 2003 is on a physical W2k3 server Exchange 2010 is to go on a virtual W2k10 R2 server I have the ISO for Exchange 2010 and need to set some command switches on the setup.exe file (I think that's what it says) I am doing all this remotely Now my questions - I assume that I need to burn the ISO to disc before I can set the switches? - if I do then how can I burn the ISO to an ordinary folder, rather than a physical disc in the DVD/RW drive? Is there an obvious way to do this that I'm not seeing?
