Hi all, I thought (maybe wrongly!) that I should install Solus3 to manage our updates as I've seen a working version and thought that it would save a lot of hassle on the SIMS updates. It has been installed and has deployed a handful of agents as a test which is fine. Capita have authorised the latest updates (in time for Census!) however when we click on "check for updates" it reports no updates found :-( Although our servers bypass our proxy (Bloxx) I can't help thinking that there is some kind of proxy interference. Is there a URL that solus3 talks to that we need to allow or would solus inform us if it could connect to the update server? Thanks for your help (hopefully!)

Hi all, I hope you have had a good summer! We have a number of AcerAspire One that will not connect to the WDS server. I have tried to image one, and have also sysprep one. It will connect to the capture image, asks me where to save the image, but won't connect to the server when I select the option to upload. All other machines are connecting fine, so it seems like a network card issue, but the drivers are in the image and also in the driver store on the server. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Hello all, I too am experiencing this, but I may be able to add some specifics about what is happening. We are entirely a 2008 R2 enterprise site with all windows 7 clients. Staff NEVER get this issue - but students do - always at random - no specific machine, no specific user. The only difference that I can see is that staff sync their documents to be able to use them offline where as students don't. The other thing is that if we re-image an affected machine it resolves the problem. Generally this happens on laptops over wireless, but is starting to happen on desktop machines more frequently. We have also gone down the route of waiting for network at startup and deleting all profiles older than 1 day with no avail. This problem does worsen over a period of time so does suggest some kind of profile / registry issue. Perhaps deleting the profile doesn't delete the associated registry key? I also don't think it's a permissions issue - it would either work or it wouldn't if that was the case! The trawl through the forums continues!!!!

Are you deploying the printers from the print server, or mapping them through group policy?

You can do all of this from 2008 group policy. There is a section under User Configuration > Preferences > Windows Settings. You can add all registry cahnges and map drives there tailored to user groups. As for printers, they can be deployed from the print management option on the print server.

So do you plan on your new server becoming a domain controller? If so you will need to set it to replicate to at least one of the old pair before demoting them. IP addresses don't really matter if so. If you want to give it an IP that's different to the rest of the network you would have to create new vlans etc - to much hassle imho!

Is your network controlled by a domain controller?

Is this on laptops / desktops, hardwired or wireless? I would look at setting wait for network in you gpo's - although we don't use scripts anymore (you can use 2008 gp to do most things) we did have an issue with gpo applying over the wireless on some machines.

Thanks very much for this. We redirect the users documents folders via their account in AD. Although the network drive maps and the user can see it they receive and error stating that the "location "P:/" is not available, and the contents of their documents are empty showing the path as c:/ Are these the symptoms that you see?

Hello all, I have a small issue that has been testing me for a bit! We currently have a number of student laptops with all the usual settings applied: no right click, hidden system tray & control panel etc. However, 60 of these laptops are now going to be made available for students to take home. Obviously they are going to have the need to connect the laptops to the home wireless, but obviously we hide the networking icon on the system tray. I have set group policy to show the networking icon but isn't taking effect. Does anyone have experience of laptops being used at home and in school that perhaps has set them up in a different manner? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

You can set proxy details within the wireless connection of the iPad, but the problem I envisage is how do you lock the iPad down so that users can't access the settings etc.

All we did is "snip" the clips off of the connectors so that you have to use a screwdriver to unplug it!

Hi Kim, Yes I have, and the member servers have an entry. However, I think that I have rectified the issue. Basically in GP, you need to have connection specific, primary dns, register dns and register PTR all enabled in group policy. XP did this as a matter of course, but 7 obviously doesn't!

Hello all, I have a strange strange problem that I can't find a solution to on the internet. We have just setup a new 2008 domain, all member servers are 2k8. All client machines are win7. However, all clients are registering a forward lookup, but nothing for the reverse. DHCP is set to Dynamically update DNS A and PTR records and to discard when lease is deleted. As a test, I have set group policy to tell the clients to manually register their PTR in computer configuration > Administrative templates > Network > DNS Client > Register PTR Record but this hasn't worked either. In the (A) record, Update associated pointer is ticked. There is also nothing in the DNS event logs, so I am at a loss as to what could be causing this issue. Has anyone had experience of this issue?
