Biography
I am the network manager for a medium sized secondary, leading a small team. I'll try to be helpful in my posts, but I'll also reply with a stupid joke if I can. I specialise in being a Jack of all trades, and certainly a master of none, but I'm a persistent, grumpy, belligerent sort and usually figure things out.

Yes, I had this and thought the ports were dying on a batch of new PCs. No, it was the crap converters. I changed them all to Benfei ones and they worked.

Digital Signage - What to put....
3s-gtech replied to garethEds's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
Oh, I agree. I don’t produce content for it, other than some filler. The content we were putting on quietly got shelved as it was a lot of work to produce! it may be something that ICT or Media students can do as classwork? -

Some decent photos. Upcoming events. Merits/awards. A bit of branding and similar. We also show our currently running clubs and activities. -
Oh no! Not lovely Oracle! Especially when they were just trying to build something nice.

Welsh schools - Hwb Intune for Windows devices instead of local domain
3s-gtech replied to Olliekai's topic in General Chat
What we're going to end up with is staff and students machines on Hwb, with all of their files in Onedrive, and pretty much every service (plus the exams accounts) still on our domain (with a potential for security issues either way). Not sure how this saves us money or stress but it's progress, right?- 32 replies

Your PaperCut feedback is interesting. We’re starting to get an inkling that they want us to cludge our old PaperCut onto the Hwb Intune devices, mainly as that will be cheap and stop us moithering. Chance for a clean sheet, or bodge, cludge, fudge and create a new mess?- 32 replies

That'll be this one, that's already in 25H2: https://endpointweekly.com/blog/kb5124008-machine-secure-channel-break-windows-11-25h2.html

We have it, it's actually necessary due to the way we issue them laptops that aren't on our domain. Uses RADIUS with their normal logon, but it does not pop out on our range and it's on a separate VLAN I think. Filtering managed further up the chain by the firewall (LEA managed). Cisco APs (AX).

staff member wanting ai in the school

A1/A3. I spend enough on MS licensing yearly; paying extra for this guff is money in the wind. -

Copilot only - laid out in our AI policy. This is for Data Protection and budgeting reasons, and also for things like SARs - we need data in places that we can audit and manage. If they really want to use another AI service, they'll need to lay out the business case and resolve these questions. -
Yup, I've had that one from people who have no idea. A proper work platform (they tend to have a guardrail) is safer again, but a ladder or stepladder is sketchy for working on something that needs two hands!
-
Super unlikely. Chipset drivers might though.
-
I've had similar, where it worked fine when not loading drivers. Turned out to be the trackpad drivers. Can you remove them?
-
Yeah, tower. Only takes one fall from that height to wish you'd been using a tower instead (while rapidly descending). If you can't keep three points of contact it's just not safe - and I've done some sketchy ladder climbs (away from work).
