I am currently looking at offsite backup solution for our SIMS data. I am awaiting costs for RBUSS through Redstor but also looking into Azure backup solutions. Anyone had any experience with the Azure backup options??

Not online backups, but taking backups offsite. How many of you guys actually take backup HDD's/Tapes etc offsite each night? I always have done, at present I'm taking 2x1TB encrypted drives off site every night, this isn't our primary backup, that goes to a NAS at the opposite end of school. But in the event of a whole school catastrophe, I have all the VM's and data etc and can be up and running once new servers are up and running. My question is (well second question), if I copied the primary backup (which is at the opposite end of school, on another floor, past more than a few walls that are supposed to retard fire) to a fireproof NAS/DAS would that be deemed enough of a backup so I didn't have to take backups offsite each night.

Hi. A client has created a SIMS backup (including DMS) for a MIS migration, but is unable to locate the documents backup .zip file. When using the SIMS Database Management Utility to take a backup including the document management system, the documents backup should be saved to a location specified during the SIMS document server installation. Where can my client see the path that was set for documents backups during the document server installation? Is there a config file that this path is stored in? Thanks. Server installation

I carried out a backup of FMS via Tools | FMS Transactions Backup. I have restored this backup to a standalone laptop but it's not allowing me to log in to FMS. Can anyone tell me why this is happening? I've read that it could be because logins are stored in the Master database. I've also read that you need to use the FMS version of dbattach, but for some reason this isn't available on our SIMS server or the laptop I have set up. The path I am looking at is C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL14.FMSDB\MSSQL\Binn and there's no sign of DBAttach. Final question, if I manually run DBAttach, whichever version, and do the Backup a Database thing from there, is this a valid backup for both SIMS and FMS and would restoring FMS mean restoring both the FMS database and the Master database for the user logins?

Hello, I was wondering if anyone is currently backing SIMS, network drives etc to Google drive taking advantage of the unlimited education storage? If so, what are you using? I looked at Cloudberry but they appear to have stopped this now for some reason. Using Google drive as a backup solution, is this breaking any T&C? After watching Linus video it doesn't appear to be? Okay so I have a client that is seeking for a suitable way to backup 20TB of data, does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking of maybe using an external hard drive. Recommendations would be extremely helpful.

Hi all, My Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 is getting too long in the tooth. I'm doing a restore right now and its taking forever due to the archive size. I need incremental backups daily and am backing up at least 2TB of data. Compression is fairly important. Restore speed is a must. What backup software are you guys using? ... Need some suggestions. Cheers in advance

Forgive any potential noobness with this query. I'm still in the learning phase of my job as an IT Technician. Anyway, I am configuring the backups for a school. They have 2 brand new QNAP TS-212 Devices and I am using Windows Server Backup to do the backing up. So far, I have setup a schedule and selected both devices as the destination disk(s). What I want to know is will it backup the same data to both devices or will it pick at random or pick only one device to do the backup? If the latter is the case, what would you suggest I do if I want to utilize both devices to their potential?

Hi All, I'm having problem in backing up Windows Server 2003/2008 x64 Edition, Even after VMWare tools re-install and restart the VM I've make sure the following services was started and set as automatic running before reinstalling VMWare tools with COMPLETE options: COM+ System Application Distributed Transaction Coordinator after restart then I've turn the following services on and set as automatic running as well: VMware Snapshot Provider Volume Shadow Copy then i got the same error message: Cannot create a quiesced snapshot because the create snapshot operation exceeded the time limit for holding off I/O in the frozen virtual machine. and here it is in the Windows VM event viewer log: Event Type: Error Event Source: VSS Event Category: None Event ID: 12302 Date: 21/09/2009 Time: 1:23:31 PM User: N/A Computer: RSA01 Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: An internal inconsistency was detected in trying to contact shadow copy service writers. Hi All, I'm looking for your suggestion and advise in utilizing the empty unused Local SATA-II datastore for my VM. I've got the following ESXi 4.0 build 164009 and a valid license of vSphere Essentials license, therefore I could use VCB but the problem is that using NBD from the SAN into the backup server is way too slow :-| it took 55 hrs to fullbackup the whole 1 TB VMFS partition (D2D over 2 network subnet). and now I'm thinking that rather than using backup solution Is it possible to clone the VM on the fly to more than 2 datastore like clustering service fault tolerance? (in this case to local datastore and the SAN_VMFS) in case there is a failure in the SAN, the VM can run off the Local Datastore, well it doesn't have to be realtime though. or perhaps there is a VCB backup that can copy the VM from he SAN VMFS into the local datastore vmfs ? that is also possible. Note: The reason why I chose this configuration is that direct connection from the SAN into the ESXi servers without anything in the middle, this can eliminate the single point of failure caused by the Switch and also provide redundancy. each color in the iSCSI network is different IP subnet by itself. from the ESXi into the production network i put two cable connected to two different ports and then add those pNIC into same vSwitch for failover Any kind of comments will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have a collection of school made DVD films, some of which are quite valuable as teaching resources (especially film of dodgy experiments with mercury etc) that I want to back up. This is in addition to making them available on ClickView, but we need to avoid compression losses. What I'd like to have some view on, is how to do it. I'm thinking of copying them to an external HDD, and then storing that somewhere safe. What is the best way to create an image on a HDD that can simply be copied onto a new DVD in the event of loss or damage. Is it best to simply copy the Video TS folder across? Or is there a better way to create a burnable image?

There comes a time where roaming profiles need to be backed up, however, Windows 7 and Server 2008R2 does not allow you to access the roaming profile folder unless the user has specifically given access. Here is a quick logon script I wrote to deal with this issue. 'This Script Sets the Permissions on Windows 7 Roaming Profiles so that we in ICTS can back them up 'It runs in user context 'If something goes wrong....Seek Louis, he may know how to fix it. 'Another thing.... you need to use ObjNetwork.Username to get the username On Error Resume Next Set objNetwork = wscript.CreateObject("wscript.network") 'Allows the Script to Access Username Set Command = Wscript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") 'Allows the Script Access to the shell (CMD) SetPerms = "icacls.exe \\atuin\louis\test\icaclcs_test /grant administrators:(F) /T" 'File Path which Administrator needs permissions to should be Example: \\Servername\Profiles$\" & ObjNetwork.Username & "_profile.v2" Dim objFSO Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject") 'Allows the script to create a file or folder strPermsFldr = "\\atuin\louis\" & ObjNetwork.Username & "_profile.v2\appdata\Roaming\.PermsChk\" 'Where the folder will be stored to check permissions. Should be Example: \\Servername\Profiles$\" & ObjNetwork.Username & "_profile.v2\appdata\Roaming\.PermsChk\" If objFSO.FolderExists(strPermsFldr) Then ' MsgBox "The folder exists! The Journey Ends Here" 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. Else ' MsgBox objNetwork.Username 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. ' MsgBox "The folder does not exist! Please wait a moment whilst it is created" 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. objFSO.CreateFolder strPermsFldr ' MsgBox "Permissions Will now be set, this may take a while" 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. Command.Run (SetPerms) ' Msgbox "Permissions Have Now Been Set" 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. End If 'Wscript.Echo "Permissions Successfully Set!" 'Debugging Line, this can be commented out. This script should be saved as a VBS and the file paths should be set to match your network environment. Hope this is of use to anybody. Louis

Hi, We've had our daily backup tape running fine for a long time until after the school holidays. Now it keeps saying 'Job exceeded its maximum runtime' and it's cancelling the job. When I come in the morning the tape is ejected. We're using Backup Exec. Any thoughts on how to resolve this? We've had a few days without backup now and i'm getting scared...

I have a samsung P28 laptop - and would like to back up the system - I can't find an obvious programme to use. Can anyone help?

One of our tape drives is going a bit senile. We are trying to nurse it through until the summer when we have plans to completely overhaul how we do backups. Currently the drive is sitting there, all diagnostics say the tape drive is fine but everything says there is no tape in the drive, this means I can't eject it. Tried a fair few reboots, resetting the drive, unplugging the scsi cable and power but to no avail. Any ideas?

Hi all, I've got problem with hardware compression on my backup Exec setup. I've checked this thread but although that seems similar it doesn't strike me as being quite the same. I know the files I'm backing up compress very well (tested this by compressing to .7z using 7-zip). However, when I tell my software to hardware compress, which my drive supports, I get 1.01:1 compression at best which is virtually useless given that my tests show it should work better. (admittedly hardware compression and 7zip will be using different algorithms). Any advice appreciated. Hardware: HP Ultrium 1760 width LTO4 tapes (800GB, 1.6TB compressed at 2:1) Software: Symantec backup exec 11d OS: Windows Server 2003 Files: images, "office" documents Jonathan

Hi We have now got our new backup server for our virtual and physical environment, we are using a mix of veeam and backup exec 2010. I am just in the process of setting it up and was after any suggestions for best performance speed, we have a tl2000 tape library hung of this via sas for archive. The Server has 24tb of raw storage in it and 1 x quad nic and 2 x onboard. Thanks in advance
