Hi, First post on here. I have been having an issue on our school server with it completing backups. Originally the server was running 2012 and using Windows Backup. This caused an issue where every few days when it was saving the hyper v it would just hold and not complete the jobs and make all the virtual machines stop working. The only way I have found to correct this is to restart the DC! Since then I have clean installed the server to 2016 and installed veam. All seemed fine but the same error is back! On veam I can see it holds at the creating VSS Snapshots and 14 hours later when I login to check it is still running this bit. I have run vss list writers and all permissions are fine none have failed. There also seems to be no pattern it will pass for days and then randomly fail, or pass for days then fail on consecutive days. Its driving me mad and the school! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Luke.

AFAIK the manage version feature in Office integrates with SharePoint to allow you to browse previous versions of a document. Are new versions taken automatically every few minutes or is just every time the user remembers to press save? Would be amazing if this integrated with VSS/previous versions (which I love BTW). If it is not possible to make a shadow copy of just one file using VSS then the manage versions button should allow you another method of browsing previous versions instead of using the right click over folder and choose previous versions tab. AFAIK OneDrive versions are taken automatically every few minutes. Perhaps even triggered by making changes to a document. I guess this kind of functionality is only possible when using a database like storage system. Perhaps it would have been possible with WinFS. But why can't Microsoft at least let you see the VSS snapshots from inside Word or Excel. Does anyone know if this is possible and just not enabled by default if VSS is enabled on drive the file is saved to. Any improvements on this front in Office 2013 (over 2010)?

Hi Everyone, I'm having an issue with a 2012r2 server I've inherited. It started when I was trying to figure out a problem with VSS which didn't allow to take a backup. One of the suggestions was to unregister and re-register some dlls, however, now I can't re-register some of them. I get the following error messages - which are different for different DLLs. es.dll vssapi.dll The module "xxxxx.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found. Make sure that "xxxxx.dll" is a valid DLL or OCX file and then try again. eventcls.dll Vssui.dll swprv.dll The module "xxxxx.dll" was loaded but the call to DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x80070715. For more information about this problem, search online using the error code as a search term. This obviously stops VSS from working. When I try to do a vssadmin resize for example I get an error in the Event Viewer: Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error calling routine GetProviderMgmInterface. hr = 0x80042304, The volume shadow copy provider is not register in the system. I've done quite a bit of searching but haven't found anything that I can use. I've done chkdsk with no issues and a sfc /scannow returned that "sfc windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them". I tried sfc /scannow in safe mode with the same result. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Theo

I just ran accross something interesting, it appears that Microsoft have a command line tool specificly designed to test the newer VSS based backup interface of Exchange 2007. It is not overly pretty but it does appear to have both a backup and restore option and as the benchmark of whether the behind the scenes backup stuff is working should be robust. The tool is described here: BETest Tool (Windows) and sourced from inside here: Download details: Windows SDK for Windows Server 2008 and .NET Framework version 3.5 The procedure is described here in the last section (The BETest Tool): Exchange 2007 Data Backup and Volume Shadow Copy Services Probably a false alarm and crippled in some way but may be worth a look at some point for someone with an exchange 2k8 testing environment to play with.

When looking into the Previous Versions of the home directory of various user accounts to recover work that has been reported as being lost, the first time I try to access one I've been receiving this kind of error: The Previous Version of "(garbage characters)" from (date and time of previous version) no longer exists. Select a different version and try again. On subsequent attempts to access the same Previous Version, it works and I am able to access the files. The fact that I am seeing this error every time work has been reported as being lost suggests that there is a problem with Previous Versions that is causing this. What's been tried so far: Rebooting the server out of hours (previously it had not been rebooted since July) Checking event logs on the server - couldn't find any VSS or VolSnap related events vssadmin list writers - no error states mentioned Can anyone suggest any further (non-destructive) steps we can take to troubleshoot or diagnose this? The server in question is Windows Server 2012 R2 and the clients are Windows 10 1809 LTSC running Office 2016. We have just added a limited off-site backup solution to our existing Windows backup strategy. The server being backed up is running Outlook and MIS/SQL so we are making use of VSS for this. Our off-site runs a partial backup around midday and a fuller backup early evening. The off-site backups also cover remote file shares. Software is Attix 5 SE. Our windows server backups runs after the offsite backups should be completed. The Windows server backups only backup file hosted on each server, so the server hosting off-site via Attix 5 is only backing up Exchange and our MIS/SQL system. What backup settings do I use for VSS? Do I use full or copy? Currently using copy but I am not sure if I should be using full backup for one of these backups to clear the transaction logs and set the backup history attributes. What happens to the transaction logs and backup history attributes if I continue to use VSS copy - will they ever get cleared/updated? From the Attix5 manual: (similar descritpion shown with Windows Backup)
