Hi! The head has asked me to go and find some timetabling software that they can start using. As with everything loads out there... What does everyone use / recommend using? (It's for a special needs school / classed as primary) Cheers.

Hi all, I've been tasked to do a little research project on helpdesk solutions for the main office/reception. In IT support we use ManageEngine Service Desk which is the most helpful tool ever as it lists all of the jobs we need to tend and can keep a record of the jobs we've done. Definitely keeps us on our toes, especially the first few weeks back into the new school year. The school manager who works in the main reception with the admin assistant's has asked if there is any kind of service desk software that they can use so they can keep track of the jobs that they need to get done in the main office as they're trying to minimize the traffic that is in and out of there. So I've had a little look about in the little time I have at the moment and there are plenty of names out there and many of them are focused on the IT side. Which solution, if any, would be best suited for the office environment? It needs to be super simplistic and straight forward... Or would ManageEngine be the best bet if there's nothing out there to cater to this need? Any names of software (whether it be installed or web based) that you may have insight/experience with would be extremely helpful. Thanks

Hi All, Apologies if this has been asked before & I've skipped over it! I've been asked by out Media Studies dept to source a couple of Blu-Ray players to allow them to play movies. We had a couple of internal Blu-Ray drives kicking about that I've bought enclosures for but I've now run into the problem of software that will enable the Blu-Rays to play. The drives came with an old version of Cyberlink 7 that seems to be stuck in a loop looking for updates. TL: DR have any of you guys come up against this issue before? What playback software do you use in school? Cheers, AJ

Exactly that. Currently Office 2013 site wide. Is it worth the upgrade to go to Office 2016 yet? I've installed it on my laptop and can't see many differences. Done a bit of research on it and again can't really spot any amazing must have features in it? Any opinions on it? I do however like to have the new shiny stuff!!!! thankyou!

Does anyone know if video editor looks for a specific location that redirection could be messing up or able to offer any other advice. Thanks Dan

Hi I have been asked to deploy Python 3.7.4 by the head of Computer Science. After visiting the Python.org website it appears that there are no MSI installers available for download for recent versions of Python. I wondered if anyone has a Python 3.7.4 MSI that I could borrow please We are currently running version 3.3.2 Unfortunately we don't have SCCM or any third party tools to wrap the EXE. Thanks

Hey guys, Back again with some more wonderful questions to ask you wonderful people about: Currently the school I'm working with (Secondary Education) are using a piece of software called DataDisc and DataDisc Timing. The software is a science program, and allows for real-time data logging and data manipulation in Education (Datadisc family) This software is really, really old. So old that there isn't a silent installation for it anywhere. This makes it extremely difficult to automate and, as we use SCCM, renders that completely useless in the imaging process with our laptop cycles. To try and get rid of the software and destroy the beast once and for all, I'm looking for some more contemporary software that has the same level of functionality as DataDisc and DataDisc Timing, that allows for silent installation. What are you guys using in your schools? Any recommendations? Help me destroy the ancient beast, please! Thank you, guys. Alicia

Hello edugeeks We have come across an issue that I suspect has been there since we moved to Arbor a 3 years ago. You will want to check your systems too and please feedback to me. A new student this year has a massive long list of food allergies so has come to speak to the kitchen staff. When we checked his record on the Sharp tills it shows nothing at all about any warnings - This is a major issue as could have serious consequences something they think is ok to eat could contain nuts for example it could kill them. The way how Arbor has allergens it lists everything in brackets so for example: No Pluses (Beans, Lentils, Peas, Chickpeas), Dairy Free (No Milk/Yoghurt/Cheese/Butter) This is good as if we have a admin staff member helping out in the kitchen on tills due to kitchen staff illness they will at least know what pulses are if they don't have a clue for example. However Sharp software is just expecting No pulses, No Nuts, Dairy Free etc so very short fields for display warning when a student is at the till. Basically if the data is too long Sharp just ignore it no warnings or anything. Now we have investigated we have about 5-10 students that don't show on the tills at all. This is a low number but not the point. We can manually on the till data edit the students record to have limited text displayed but my point is then each time we have a new student start we would then have to manually check: do they have allergens that need to display on the tills and are they too long. What happens if a student then becomes vegan so that then takes their record over the character limit we don't know when people make a change to dietary requirements as IT. Sharp have said they have never had this at any other school before and can create a custom setup for us but will charge for it (don't know costs). We did not know we had issues before now and students in other year groups are also affected if this new student had not spoken to the kitchen staff we would be in the dark as would not know as you hope it just works. In my mind even if the till displayed an error to say data too long at least you know there is an issue that needs to be investigated. It does not help parents can use the notes field in dietary to say epipen carrier etc so that also tries to sync adding to the length issue. Maybe this is more of an Arbor issue and other tills may have same sort of problems with sync. Do people just manually check every record to make sure it displays (we only have about 160 students on the list out of 1100) but I want to know it works ideally automatically Thanks for you time If anyone has Arbor and Sharp tills please have a look for me and PM or post on here. Most work without issues we ran a report on all students with Dietary requirements and looked for the long ones.

New here, so didn't know where to post. My mother recently bought a country club, and we have been slowly adding amenities to the place. Now that the membership is growing, we want to go digital. We are wanting the membership idea to kind of be like a gym. We want scannable membership cards that will pull up a membership profile. I'm usually the tech savvy one of the group, but this project has just got me confused. I cannot find what I want. We need to find a database software that can link up to membership cards. Or maybe even just print out individual SKU barcodes to stick on the back of membership cards that we can scan. It doesn't have to be the magnetic strip. What's the best way to do this? We are so confused. Like I said, I'm normally pretty tech savvy, so I don't need a dumbed down answer. I just need to know what to download and buy, the rest i can figure out. Thank you so much to anyone who has ideas for us.

Hi all, I have being working in secondary education for a few years now, At the minute we use a database to record the pc's inventory information but as you can imagine keeping it up to date for 220 pc's when im rushed off my feet installing hardware and software can be a nightmare therefore i have being looking at inventory applications on the market. I have experimented with spiceworks (works but seems to slow the network down) , OCR Inventory and recently i love lansweeper! although if i dont buy the premium version you are limited, i would like the application to just detect and gather the information without me having to create scripts and software installs to the clients. Is there any software (maybe open source) you can recomend? that works well for your sites? or just even information on how you all track your inventory??

Hi I am a Governor of a very large school.Like many other schools we have fallen behind on the IT front. The learners are well ahead of the teachers, they do everything on line, they are the Citizens of a digital Age.I thought I was poor on the IT front but having spent quality time in the school was amazed to see the general level of IT skills that existed or didn't so to speak.God I get frustrated at the speed of Windows 8 but trying to use ,what was it, XP ? .O and if you have a problem just ask Pugsley in year 10 he can sort it!!when hes not on his i phone designing another app,or topping up his cashless catering account having hacked and gained access to the system the day it was installed! So new brooms, open minds and a six figure budget. The remit "To consider the learners and school’s techology requirements over the next few years in order to support teaching, learning, marketing and communications. To compile a strategic plan for implementation over a 1-3 year period. The remit to encompass developments in , staff training and development, hardware and software requirements, technical infra-structure requirements, performance of the network and systems and any other related matters in this area of work". Where I need help is on overall strategic approach documentation and a framework.I have piles of good ideas on i pads, hand helds, voting devices, various possible software packages but getting it to hang together is where I'm losing it.So if anyone can pointme in the right direction would be really really gratful. O and I asked Pugsley in year 10 but he said he was to busy having to hack into the ever changing marking systems brought about as a result of Goves ,u turns, u turns Thanks cockneyrebel “You can take the Boy out of London but you cannot take the Londoner out of the Boy”

In the past we have had "Always wait for the network at computer startup and logon" set at the default domain policy, this has meant immediately after a machine has been imaged and ran through sysprep the machine reads any MSI installation GPO's and installs them immediately (not after the second reboot) since we upgraded our Domain Functional Level to 2008 R2 (we are still using Win XP SP3 clients) this settings appears to be ignored and is taking 2 or more restarts to install MSI GPO's - We cant seem to track down the issue and have spent hours trying to sort the issue, Win 7 clients (which are in test phase, apply the software installation on first boot into windows) I have tried everything I can think of including: Fresh install from non patched Win XP SP3 Fully patched Windows XP SP3 Isolated test domain with Server 2003 R2 << this is what we had before and it *used* to work! and Server 2008 R2 Domain Functional Level Registry setting to disable mediasense Registry setting to delay the group policy processing (waiting for network card) Remove, re-apply the setting Recreate the policy Delete the OU and recreate Different NIC card/Updated drivers Applied the setting directly on the OU and blocked inheritance All of the above tests result in the machine applying policies *whilst* at the login prompt not delaying the login prompt and processing the software installations first, resulting in two sometimes three reboots needed to install software. We are now looking at paying for Microsoft Support, but I am just wondering what happens with other peoples experience of this setting? Is it only supposed to work after the second reboot and somehow its been working after the first reboot for us? Attached is a screenshot of the error, which to me means its ignoring the setting to disable fast login optimisation, I have also enabled full verbose logging on the client but the userenv.log isnt proving very helpful HELP!

Hello Does anyone know if there is there a piece of software that will scan my music (itunes) folder and give me a list of albums which are missing needed to complete the artist's discography? I think iTunes does something like this but i would imagine this only works against tracks in the iTunes store which may not be complete. Ta Darren

Are there any online Driving Theory Test websites (Free/paid) that anyone would recommend? Our PSE department are looking for something to use with our 6th years. We previously had a CD version but it's from 2003 so is kind of out of date now. Because of this I was thinking that somekind of website subscription would be ideal given the driving test is continually being updated so it's the only way we could keep up. TIA

Do any of you use any video editing software in schools? I am wondering because we are lacking the mp4 codecs to use the flipcams and a couple of teachers are looking to use them in lessons soon. We currently use XP Movie Maker which is just horrendous loading a movie bigger than 10mb makes the computers crawl!! I am only aware of the Pinnacle software as its all ive used at home, does anyone have any recomendations on software? (Or no software as the case may be I have mentioned the ffdShow codecs here before and I dont think anyone is keen on the "grey area" that surrounds the legalities of using them )

Is there any software for intel based macs that can anti-alias videos? I have googled but with no joy. The cameras we use are really bad at recording fast moving objects, with no settings to change on the camer. Ideally the video could be enhanced on the mac before importing into Final Cut.
