Windows 10 LTSB / EDU and WHOOPS where did the photo viewer go!
DigiBen posted a topic in Windows 10
Just before christmas my team looked at the various versions of Windows 10 and decided ENT LTSB was the best option for our schools. The cut-down look was great, and easiest to sell on to teachers as its just an updated Win7. But this week a teacher asked me "where is the photo viewer?".... Urm.... Turns out "Photo Viewer" is not enabled, you can do a registry fix to bring it back. But that made us realise that the new Photo app wasnt present, or the calculator, or any remote option of sideloading apps in the future. (I think it is possible to load apps to LTSB, but its not officially supported so we will be avoiding this.) As a result, we need to rethink our deployments. I am looking at whether Education or Enterprise is best for schools, what do you think? I think Education seems the best bet Sadly though during our time trials LTSB was under 2 minutes for initial login, but Education was 3-4minutes for initial login. So this is going to annoy the pupils without a doubt! How is everyone deploying apps btw?- 14 replies

I have a batch of new Windows 10 Laptops and have installed Office 2016 Pro but unlike Office 2013 I cannot get the Outlook to connect to our users' Office 365 Education email. It will happily connect to Microsoft Mail but can't find the 365 Education version. Edge connects Office 365 fine. Is there something I HAVE to do or have Big Blue ended the relationship between Office 2016 local and Online Email?

Does anyone know if schools and collages in the UK are legally allowed to make a digital copy of a DVD for educational purposes? For example, could you make a digital copy of a DVD, and then store that digital copy on a shared drive accessible to any member of the teaching staff?

Hi I have been asked to deploy Python 3.7.4 by the head of Computer Science. After visiting the Python.org website it appears that there are no MSI installers available for download for recent versions of Python. I wondered if anyone has a Python 3.7.4 MSI that I could borrow please We are currently running version 3.3.2 Unfortunately we don't have SCCM or any third party tools to wrap the EXE. Thanks

Hi all, I'm the IT Manager at Twynham School - Do you know if 'it's the thing' to start getting devices onto Windows 11? When Windows 10 came out, we really jumped on that but we've held fire on this one. All our PCs in the IT office are on Win11 but I'm just reluctant to move staff and students over... I assume you can do things like Sysprep in Win11 but what about the start menu import changes as I know they're now based on JSON? I did attempt making an image when Win11 very first came out but it didn't go very well haha! Many thanks!

Excluding any hub associations, could I please ask how other schools are designing their SharePoints. I have set up separate SharePoint sites for curriculum subjects (Maths, English etc), but was curious about the administration side. We have an Admin Portal network drive and I could replicate this with an Administration site with sub folders for say "Catering", "Facilities", "Admissions", or is the best option to separate these into sites too?

NEN - The education network have asked for thoughts and opinions on BYOD in the classroom. Their consultation will include industry, and interested parties such as schools, colleges, RBCs etc. BYOD - What do you Think? - The National Education Network I have created a blog post which I have also submitted to the consultation. It probably doesn't cover everything, and therefore I'd be grateful if you could read it, give feedback, but perhaps most importantly submit something to NEN yourself. You can find my thoughts here... BYOD: NEN Consultation « Irritable Tech As a systems manager who has been trying to implement a scheme, (and trying to get our LEA on board) I think it's really important to get some feedback from us non teachers. So please if you can spare five minutes, put something together. @GrumbleDook rightly pointed out to me on twitter that the consultation should include feedback on 1:1 schemes, as many lessons could be learned from organisations who have looked to this approach. However that isn't the line my school has taken, and therefore I didn't really factor this in to my response. If wireless isn't the correct place for this, sorry mods...

Here is an interesting take on he future of education and one that I think has a whole lot of merit. It is very simmilar to various ideas that I have had on ways to improve educational software (in learning terms rather than codewise). From Gamification to Intelligence Amplification to The Singularity | ACCELER8OR Primer Well worth a read and a think.

Has anybody heard of these or used/using their system? I got a call from them this morning offering to give us a demo of their system and a link via email (sent from the guys Yahoo! account, excuse being Win7 doesn't allow Outlook which I'm not really buying...), however the link is to an IP address (seems odd, don't they have a domain name?!) and Outlook is flagging it as a potential phishing email (probably because of the IP address). Anybody know anything about them?
