Hi, We installed some new servers without activating the licences a couple of weeks ago as we were waiting for our licences to be emailed to us which got delayed due to us changing software reseller. We then received our product keys today. Among other things, we had ordered CIS licences for 2012 r2. When we have gone onto the VLS console, the CIS 2012 r2 licenses are listed under Licenses. However, under Product Keys, there are only Datacenter 2012 licenses (ie not r2) listed, alongside the SCCM licenses, etc. When we have entered this key onto the server, of course it hasn't been accepted. When we have gone back to the reseller and they have said that the licensing is correct - that Datacenter is only 2012 not 2012 r2. When I explained that I was unable to enter the product key onto the server, they said it was because you couldn't convert a trial license to a subscribed license. However, we haven't loaded a trial version of the software - we have simply loaded the full version and not activated it, so are working under the "30 day grace period". We have now been told that Microsoft won't help us unless we pay £199 for consultancy! Can anyone who has purchased CIS 2012 r2 please tell me what version license is listed for Datacenter on your VLS portal please? Thanks in advance

Hi All, We are a small school deploying a handful of new Lenovo M83 ThinkStations. They have come pre-installed with Win7 Pro. I would like to upgrade one to Win 10 and get it configured then do a simple clone to the other two systems that I need to deploy to the same work area. These systems have their Windows license embedded in BIOS, I believe. Is there a chance in heck that this is going to work for us, be legal, and result in a Windows install that can be activated. If not what do you suggest? I see info on Windows Imaging and Configuration Designer is this what I need? Will this even work without a volume license deal? Thanks. Sorry I am so clueless. Seems like this stuff used to be easier.

Hi, We're changing our O365 licensing from E3 Faculty to Pro Plus Faculty (Free with EES). I just tried changing my own O365 account to the Pro Plus license and its created a new mailbox etc instead of just changing the license so I've lost my mail for now. Waiting for a call from MS... My E3 runs out on Friday. What do I do ?? Gulp!

Does anyone know if schools and collages in the UK are legally allowed to make a digital copy of a DVD for educational purposes? For example, could you make a digital copy of a DVD, and then store that digital copy on a shared drive accessible to any member of the teaching staff?

Hi guys, We currently use ETLA in the FE college and has worked well for us. Being able to install onto any lab/shared machine and price based on FTE staff has been quite a hassle free experience. I'm now seeing a lot about the VIP program and vendors pimping this to us but from what I can see is back to being based around purchasing x number of licences and reviewing that as and when additional installs are required - all seems a bit of a faff to me! Has anyone had any experience with the VIP program and would like to share? Prices good compared to ETLA? Admin console access/deployments and updating just the same? How have you found managing and updating licence requirements over the year? Or am I totally misunderstanding the whole thing (as usual..)??! Thanks as ever

Hi all, I am working with a client that has a Windows SBS 2008 server running on a ESXI 4.0 server. The history is a bit fuzzy but from what I can make out the HP server with SBS on gave up the ghost so they bought another HP server, put esxi4 on it and p2v'd the SBS server. The person who did this is long gone so I can't ask them anything. And as you can imagine no one knows anything regarding their Windows licensing hence this post. I'm assuming that the SBS server license is no longer valid as it is a vm? My resolution is for the client to buy a 2008 R2 standard license plus CALs to assign to the esxi4 host and then build another vm and migrate whatever is on the SBS server to it. Am i way off base here? MS licensing is a confusing place. Thanks DK

We have Adobe CC on an EEA agreement. We use the device licensing option under the Creative Cloud Desktop apps for Education, but on a new image we have built, after deployment the desktop apps are asking users to sign in. What is odd is that on an earlier image that the new one is an updated version of, it all works as you would expect. Nothing that was updated on the image has anything to do with Adobe, just windows security updates, latest java and some python modules. Any ideas?

I have recently been made part of a team of 4 to research and develop the process by which we might implement Office 365 into a school. We are all novices and thus know little about it. Is there anyone out there with any tales to tell of their experience in getting an organisation started and how, if any, many problems they have encountered since it was put in? How long did the whole process take? Does anyone have any experience tying Office 365 in with EES Licensing? What feedback have your users given you? We have a school who are itching to be a guinea pig for our trial. However, we are unable to give them an accurate time frame on long it might take us to get them started due to our limited knowledge.

I was just in the process of running a manual install of ActivInspire when I noticed something in the license agreement: Now, it's not particularly clear on whether you can upgrade for free from AS3, although that is somewhat implied by the way you get to the download page. As I understood it with AS3, you could originally install it on 5 PCs per Promethean IWB. At some point that was relaxed to allow free use within school and for preparation at home, as long as it was never used to display on just a projection screen or on a non-promethean IWB. The above agreement seems to suggest that if you get the software bundled with an IWB, you can only install it on the PC it's connected to. What's worse, if you get the software bundled with a set of ActivExpressions (costing you about £1850) you can only use the software with one IWB... which presumably you were already licensed to use the software with anyway?! That sentence is the one which is giving me reason to wonder whether we are licensed to use Inspire on our old Promethean boards. If the licensing is indeed free-and-easy as we were lead to believe at BETT, then can someone from Promethean: a) make it clear on here b) make it much clearer in the license agreement in the installer, because a) won't stand up in court! To be honest our teachers are quite happy with AS3 for the most part - it's only the ones who want to use our new ActivExpression sets who will go bananas if they have have to use them in specific rooms.

Hi Everyone Whats the low down on SBS 2000 CAL enforcement? Does it refuse connections past the maximum CALs. Im rebuidling the SBS server and the owner is finding the CALs for me, legally were ok as we do own them, but i want to know if i can proced with the rebuild without connections being refused before we instal the CALs. Hope someone can help Regards Gary

Holy Moley, the licensing is crazy expensive these days, this is now over £5.5k for me. each fte (which now includes a .5 fte count for cleaning staff etc.) more than £48 per FTE this is starting to hurt. At this rate our school would be paying Microsoft over £60,000 in the next ten years.

Has anybody got a contact at SketchUp? Our education license grant programme license for SketchUp 2018 has expired prematurely (our documentation says it was supposed to be good until November 2020). I tried opening a support ticket on their web form but although I got an automated acknowledgement, I got no reply, and I haven't been able to find a working email address for them. The ICT Service (who are listed on SketchUp's web page as being the administrators for Cambridgeshire in the UK for the license grant programme) just told me they don't deal with that any more and tried to direct me towards a paid SketchUp reseller. The education license grant programme appears to still exist according to the SketchUp website - https://www.sketchup.com/education/grants - so ideally we'd like to continue using this to get the software for free. We're using Windows 10 LTSC 1809 so we can't use the "SketchUp for Schools" app as it's a Windows Store app.

Hi Guys, This might be a bit specific, but we're working on a BYO network where our Macs are enrolled into our Casper Suite and Windows are bound to the domain. We're running our Sibelius Licensing Server on a Windows Server and I'm looking for a way to either manage the licensing logs, or at least extract the number of checked out licenses so that I can keep an eye on this and use it to limit the people who can install Sibelius on their machines... Any suggestions or am I being too vague about a quite specific situation? Thanks in advance, Laura

Hi guys and girls, Need some help with this, I apologise it's a bit long... Grab a coffee and read on if you dare! I have recently taken on the ICT technician role for a smallish Junior School. A question has been asked about our Microsoft Licensing and the buck has been planted fairly and squarly on my desk. For complicated reasons (previous tech left a bit swiftly and the firm that did support and who were also the channel partner are a bit miffed the school dropped them... and I've had no reply to various questions) . I have nobody else to help me and so wondered if anyone here has the answers / advice I need. From digging around in the schools paperwork, I am a bit worried that they may not actually be licensed! I can log on to MVLS using the previous techs credentials and this 'I think' confirms it. I have dug through various forum posts here and to be honest I have more questions than when I started... So my questions: 1, How much trouble are we in and how likely are Microsoft to swoop in S.W.A.T. style, also if we license now will they know we have a period unlicensed and charge us?! 2, Who on earth do I call to get us licensed? The last paperwork I can find says we had something called a 'Microsoft School 3 Confirmation' (the bursar says she believed it was for 3 years, but I'm not so sure). 3, We have discs sent to us after 'I think' our agreement ran out, why is this? 4, Why does the MVLS website show every product under the sun with downloads and keys, are we licensed for all of it? 5, How do I get the previous tech removed from MVLS and removed without ringing MS alarm bells? 6, How can I be sure that he hasn't downloaded a .csv with all keys etc. and is using it (there are 2 Server 08 R2 keys and 4 Office 2010 keys used and we are not running them?!). Help me EDUGEEK, you're my only hope! Kol

Hi all Quick question... I've got a vmware setup at my current place, set up by an ex member of staff. I know very little about vmware, so I unsure about what I need to do to add an additonal ESX(i) server. We have the following: vmware vcenter server standard 4.1.0 and 2 X ESX 4.1 hosts. I want to add a third host, but have a couple of questions: - With what I currently have, do I need to change any of the licensing? I'm of the understanding currently that I won't, as vcenter server standard allows for more than two hosts as part of the license? - Can I install the latest version of ESXi (as opposed to ESX) and add it as part of vCenter, along with the two current ESX hosts and expect full compatibility between them (moving VMs etc)? Thanks

Understanding Microsoft Client Access Licenses (CALs) I have added a couple of links from The Licensing FAQ which explain that schools agreement customers do not required external connector licenses, Client Access License Coverage for Educational Institutions and that Student CALs cover parents/guardians. Licensing Parental Access.doc so that you have all the information you need.

[windows software] Microsoft A3 on CSP alongside OVS-ES
J_Worth posted a topic in Licensing Questions
Hi all, I'm looking at taking advantage of the Microsoft 365 A3 licensing. However, I am still wanting to be able to use on-prem activation services (ADBA). Therefore, does anyone know if it's possible to have a CSP agreement with M365 A3 on it as well as a OVS-ES agreement with everything else such as server licensing, Windows Education Upgrade and SA product (which includes KMS activation of Windows)? I'm looking at going down a Hybrid licensing route initially so we can get the benefits of A3, however, keep with Windows licensing etc. that's quick an easy (I'm not planning on ditching our on-prem AD any time soon). Obviously I would remove Entra P1, Intune etc. from the OVS-ES agreement as that's all included with A3. Hopefully this makes sense and can work. Many thanks! -
I have a fleet of laptops running Windows 11, and either a BIOS update or Windows update causes them to all of a sudden show up as unactivated with the "Activate Windows" watermark. They were all activated during deployment with a MAK key. That key is still valid. How can I "reactivate" these without haivng to touch each and every laptop? Would it make sense to try to convert my MAK to a KMS?

I am currently running the time limited, evaluation of InTune and am considering my licensing alternatives after it ends. I have approximately 30 devices which are all Windows 10 Education based devices. My question is about which is the optimal license model for me to maximise functionality against spend. I am specifically looking at managing devices at this stage and NOT application management. It appears that there are a couple of options: Buy Intune device licences for the number of devices in the project and purchase more as needed Or Buy Microsoft Intune for Education for Faculty licence If I take the second, how many devices could be enrolled against each licence? I’ve heard mixed feedback varying from between 5 and 40. I suppose the premise being that a faculty license provides the ability and rights to manage an arbitrary quantity of student devices and if this is the case then it would make more sense to take this route as it offers better value as long as device licenses were not needed by virtue of them being managed by using a Faculty license. On the whole, it’s not clear which is the better route to take so I appreciate any advice you can provide. Thanks.

I have a friend who works at a school that has licensed the Education Desktop with Core CALS for the last 2 years. Its near renewal time and I'm wondering if it could be done cheaper. Currently they license 20 Education Desktop with Core cal's and use Windows Upgrade Office including the buy at home option Forefront protection Office 365 for email Windows CAL Is it possible to license just Windows upgrade Office including buy at home option Windows CAL Forefront Protection on EES and therefor save the school money. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi everyone, I have been trying to work out the best licensing approach for our school. I arrived at my current school to discover all the licensing in complete disarray (they expired last August) and the RM CC4 environment on its knees, accompanied by an RM abandoned Office 365 project. As a result, I have had no choice than to sever ties with RM as the account management has been pretty poor and they seemed fairly disinterested in doing much to save the relationship. So, I am currently on the market for a new licensing partner, but need to pull together costs for server and cal licensing for the school asap as we need to implement a new server environment to replace the Server 2003 CC4 environment. We have 600 fte's and 700 PCs. I need to license the following, but am confused about CALs and whether EES represents value for money for us based on our ftes v device count: 4 x Windows Server 2012 R2 DataCenter Licenses 1 Yr 5 x SQL Server Enterprise 1Yr 4 x Windows System Center 2012 Datacenter We have managed to implement office 365, so have got E1 Faculty/Student licensing. We would also like to implement MDOP at the same time as SCCM to help us deliver UE-V and App-V but again, I have no idea how this is licensed and am struggling under the barrage of url links in the microsoft pages to make sense of it all! Anyone here know anything about licensing these environments that can point me in the right direction?!? Thanks

Hello, We've not upgraded for a bit and now we need to it's proving complicated! We want to upgrade to Snow Leopard on our Macbooks so we can install Mavericks however the licensing issues are proving to be a bit confusing. I don't seem to be able to find a license for Education that allows the OS to be installed on more than one computer. We only have two! Where can we buy it? How can this process be made simpler?!

Hello everyone, Struggling to get Windows 10 LTSC 2019 Activated using AD-based Activation. I have added the Server 2019 DataCtr/Std KMS key to Volume Activation Tools on our Server 2012 R2 Domain Controller. It flat out refuses to activate. Have I used the correct host key? Has anyone managed to get it working? Many thanks in advance.

My CS students are using VS2017CE as their IDE. Board controlled assessment criteria requires no internet access. VS2017CE checks license validity online every 12 hours. Currently I have the following in my filtering exceptions list. Has anyone else noticed any more URLs used for this purpose? Activation seems to still be failing, but not for everyone. officeclient.microsoft.com vo.msecnd.net vortex.data.microsoft.com vsspsext.visualstudio.com azure.com vssps.visualstudio.com digicert.com graph.windows.net
