I work for a school and have recently bought smoothwall. Smoothwall has asked me to setup a radius server to send accounting packets for all the laptops which students are bringing to the school. I am very new to this kind of setup and was looking for some help. So far I have configured NPS on windows 2008. The radius system is registered on AD and have added all the AP's I am struggling at one point where it is asking to install the certificate. Now we have one of the Domain controller which is acting as certificate authority and has a valid Geotrust certificate, which is again present on raidus server but when i configure "Configure an Authentication Method " it is not allowing me to configure it is saying that the certificate is not present. Can i not use the certificate from my existing domain controller by simply importing it to NPS certificate store? I have attached the screen shot of the error Thanks Arpit

Hi all, I am working with a client that has a Windows SBS 2008 server running on a ESXI 4.0 server. The history is a bit fuzzy but from what I can make out the HP server with SBS on gave up the ghost so they bought another HP server, put esxi4 on it and p2v'd the SBS server. The person who did this is long gone so I can't ask them anything. And as you can imagine no one knows anything regarding their Windows licensing hence this post. I'm assuming that the SBS server license is no longer valid as it is a vm? My resolution is for the client to buy a 2008 R2 standard license plus CALs to assign to the esxi4 host and then build another vm and migrate whatever is on the SBS server to it. Am i way off base here? MS licensing is a confusing place. Thanks DK

Hi all, This post goes to all those who have successfully moved from RM based infrastructure to a brand new Vanilla setup. Would like to know how much success you've had from using SCCM 2012 and any other third-party tools. We are looking to move away from RM CC4 and looking for some options but without a doubt we will intensively be using SCCM 2012. Thanks for the replies in advance.

Hi you knowledgeable people, I'm hoping you can give me some advice on how to setup a new virtualised infrastructure in the charity I work for. We currently have 2 sites (details below), approx 200 staff, which work on shifts (we operate 24/7). Current setup: 2 sites (HQ & Branch) connected via 20Mb leased line. HQ setup: Dell 2900 Server - running Win Server 2003, DC, Exchange 2003, file (DFS) and print server, Sage Line 50, Eset AV (so its a bit crowded) Small HP microserver - running Win 2008 R2 - SQL server express Approx 40 desktop PCs running XP A couple of desktops running Win 7 Branch: Desktop PC - running Win 2003, DC, file and print Approx 12 desktop PCs running XP Hardware available for new setup: 2 x HP DL380G6 (2 cpu, 18GB RAM, 2 x 146GB 10k SAS, 3 x 300Gb 10k SAS) - initially purchased for Hyper-V hosts 2 x HP DL180G6 (don't have the spec on hand) - initially purchased for storing DPM backups This hardware was purchased about 1 year ago with the plan being 1 of each type of server used as each site, but due to various different reasons I couldn't do anything with them until now. I'd also like to keep any new purchases down to an absolute minimum. We already have some enterprise 2008 R2 licences and due to use being a charity MS licences are very cheap. My thoughts / plans are: At HQ: HyperV host using HP DL380G6 - will call it HyperV1 Maybe take a hard drive and some RAM from other DL380 ? So it could have 24Gb RAM, 2 x 146GB for host OS, 4 x 300GB RAID5 for virtual machines. Use it to host: VM1 -Exchange 2010 (approx 200 users, half of these are very light users, most of the rest would be medium, with a few heavy users) VM2 - Sage VM3 - DC with file and print server VM4 - SQL server (or express) Use a DL180 with DPM to backup these servers Keep Dell 2900, keep as Physical DC & file server, Eset AV At Branch: Use a DL380G6 setup as Hyper-V host - call it HyperV2 Use it to host: VM1 - DC with File and print Have capacity to setup another VM to use as backup exchange server incase anything happens Exchange server in HQ Use a DL180 to keep backups using DPM of the DL180 in HQ Any thoughts on this ? What I'm trying to achieve is all data (Exchange, network files, sage backups etc) sufficiently backed up e.g. backups from HQ stores in branch site If anything was to happen to HyperV1 it wouldn't cripple the company. Further down the line I'd like to move all PCs to Win 7 Is RAID 5 going to be OK with Exchange 2010 for the relatively small number of users ? I'd like to use RAID 10 but that would mean purchasing more harddrives which I'd like to try and avoid if possible. Anything else I've forgotten about ? I'd really appreciate any help / advice you can give me. Mark

We have an XP user environment, I'm permitting a selection of users to connect to a server via RDP (I won't go into the reasoning). Upon logging on via RDP to this windows 2008 R2 server, users get "The Recycle Bin on U:\Favorites is corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive?" with "yes" & "no" command buttons. The U Drive is their user drive (\\SERVER\OFFICE$\USERNAME, favorites are redirected to here. I'm guessing this is a folder redirection issue - just wondered if anyone is able to clarify / inform me what the precise issue is? Thanks for your support, Andy

We ar movig our students to Gmail and i have a couple of issues 1) How do we get it to sync passwords with our AD on windows 2008 r2, I ahve seen a mixture of solutions but not a really clear step by step I have installed GADS and that works great I have installed the google password sync but nothing happens even when i change password it still does not logmein Is it that i have to wait a longer for sync to happen or am i missing something some people are talking about sha1filter dll but i read nothing about thaton google help. I would even consinder single sign on but we CANNOT pay anything. I know my way round IIS so if it something we can do for free then i will consider that option. If someone could be kind enough to give a step throu guid on getting this to work please would save me going mental. Config this end Windows 2008 RC2 RM cc4.3 Thanks Stuart

I have been struggling with with a logon problem for several days, basically after 2 successful logons the 3rd one fails and does not connect to the server, also all the icons are missing. I am now in the process of trying to logon after a reboot to see if I have the same pattern. I am running Windows 2008 R2 SP1 with Windows 7 64bit clients. I have loaded all the updates on the server. I have tried enabling "Always wait for the network at computer startup and login" in group policy for the staff policy but this has not worked. When this happens I am not convinced that the policy is actually being applied. This is driving me mad, so any help would really be appreciated.

Having come back of f holiday we have found that we cannot logon to any of our internal hosted php sites. When we logon as a user it just shows the login box with no errors. If we logon as a user we knows does not excist then it shows an error of unkown user etc. Before holidays we had some issues with window 2008 r2 and our local tech have done some updating of windows but they cannot help as far as this problem is concern. Can any one help advise us where to look for a problem as nothing is appearing in logs as an error. THanks Stuart

Hi guys. Our school is running out of IP addresses. Currently we have 254 IP addresses. Our server runs on Windows Server 2008. I requested a bigger range of IP addresses from our network provider. They told me that they have changed the subnet mask from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.254.0 and now we have 510 IP addresses providing I configure our end. Does IpV4 supports that amount of addresses or do I have to change to IpV6? I have never done this before and I just wonder how to do it.  Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Hi i am new to win server AD and scripting , but i want to create a dc to a classroom with a lot of users for students. I would be glad if you could help me with a script that adds users from a csv file to AD users and uses the parameters - Firstname - Lastname - Username - Pass - Class(=groupname) and makes a home directory for them also sets the privilages that students can only modify or read their own files except a shared folder like "shared" .I know there are topics that cover partly this questions but this script world is new to me and i don't know how to create this exact setup. Also if you could post a sample csv for this script that would be nice. (Sorry for my bad english.) All the best Zs.

Has anybody managed to find a way of using both AFP home folders and SMB folders? What I am trying to do is have both setup on a students/staff login so that they can access there windows based home directory and also access the Mac home directories for things like Aperture, iphoto garage band etc which require a lot of storage room. We Limit Student storage to 150mb so we need to be able to use our current promise storage to store the home folders. I have read a few forums with scripts on but i can't seem to get them to work. I have got a working magic (golden) Triangle I can login to the any Mac with the any AD login and it works I can see there windows based home folder. Any Help would be much appreciated. Our Current setup is: Mac OS X Server (xServe) 10.7.5 running OD as Master and bound to AD Mac Clients 10.7.5 Windows 2008R2 Domain Controller

Dear All, Forgive me if this is in the wrong forum, but i wasn't quite sure what to put this one. The summer is coming to an end and we have all either upgraded or replaced our servers, but what we do with the old servers? My first thought was to bin them or sell them off and buy a nice new SAN, but they are expensive. Then a thought stuck me, why not wipe them all clean install a piece of software that connects them all together and hey presto instant SAN. My trouble is I don't know which piece of software to use or even if it exists. Any ideas?? TIA Ian
