Hi All, we're doing a project to move our workstations off of RM and to vanilla Windows 10. When we started imaging it was fine as i could image a machine using MDT (windows 1703 was the ISO. and then if a user required local admin access i simply added them to the biult in administrators group and all was well. I've updated the iso to windows 10 v1809 a few weeks back and the other day went to add a user as a local admin, we restarted the worksation and i had the user login but they were still not a local admin. In an rm network and cc4 imaged pc you would normally add the user in the management console to the pc a privileged user and restart the pc however the vanilla windows way of adding a local admin seemed to work on a v1703 windows vanilla laptop the other day. does anyone know what this might be? i would just use 1703 however it has that ridiculour problem where users logins stall half way through with a black screen. this is why we moved to the 1809 version but have obviously now come up against this problem with adding local admin rights. I've have found that by removing the Staff User Type gpo from the domain user it gives them a little more access however in 1703 there was no need to remove a gpo etc. any help greatly appreciated.

Hi all, This post goes to all those who have successfully moved from RM based infrastructure to a brand new Vanilla setup. Would like to know how much success you've had from using SCCM 2012 and any other third-party tools. We are looking to move away from RM CC4 and looking for some options but without a doubt we will intensively be using SCCM 2012. Thanks for the replies in advance.

Dear all, I currently maintain a CC3 network at a secondary school, however we are in the process of planning the move to a standard Vanilla network. Could anyone lend any advice or tips on the following: - * Whats the best way to move the students work/profiles? * Is there a way of beginning this network change if we use a different subnet mask and IP range? What is the best way of getting our new servers up and running without them conflicting with our current DCs? * Should DNS/DHCP be installed on all of the new servers or just the Forrest Root (4 servers in total) * Is there a 'proper' way to set up IP addresses and Subnets or can we be quite free with what we choose? Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks.

Good morning everyone, I’m looking for some advice and suggestions on how I might proceed from the following situation: After many years of excellent service from RM we have had several significant problems with the latest project, Server 2016 and Windows 10, despite working with various levels of their technical support team for several months we don’t seem to be making much progress on getting a reliable working network. This has led me to start looking at possible alternative support providers. My team and I are more than capable of handling the day to day issues that come up, we only tend to use RM for larger projects such as upgrading Server OSs, moving to new versions of Windows and server refreshes. We don’t really have the necessary skills and experience to build a full “Vanilla” network from scratch in a compressed time period and role this out to an entire secondary school (1000 students, 450 devices). Two of us do have experience of supporting vanilla MS networks, but this was a while ago. I'm starting to feel that this may be the only way to truly get rid of the "ghosts in the system" that seem to exist. Every time one problem is solved it seems to create another one. If any of you could recommend a support provider in the local area (West Midlands) or suggest any other possible solutions I would be very grateful. Thanks David

Right, let me start by saying hello! I have been a reader of Edugeek for a few weeks now but haven't made the leap into contributing anything yet... mostly because everyone seems so much more knowledgeable than me! So, let me pick your brains and tell you about my situation - hopefully the great intellect that is Edugeek can give me some advice! I work in a primary school in Kent (430 pupils) that would be considered by most other primary schools (maybe secondary too!) to be spoiled rotten when it comes to ICT provisions... and we are. Money is no object! Example: If you went to BETT and saw the 3D imaging setup in the RM 'Futures' presentation then you would have seen the 12 grand model. Our head has a vision that the school will be a leader in primary school ICT... and is putting in an order for the 6 metre screen at a whopping 18 thousand pounds... Ouch. But I am not hear to discuss the educational merit of a 3D PowerPoint presentation... I am here to discuss how BEST to spend around 20-25 thousand pounds on a brand new "future-proof" network capable of supporting a wireless device for every child into the next 3 years. We currently run a 4 year old RM CC3 network that is crippled by an ageing server and wireless network running on PC World bought D-link access points. One in each classroom... 30 laptops attempting to run off one AP... It doesn't take a genius to realise that we were going to run into problems - I'm new to the school by the way, so this was done before my time Essentially the head has said - "rip it out and start again, here's the money..." This is what we have now: - 1 server running a CC3 Curriculum and an Admin network - 20 wired classroom and office desktops - 175ish wireless devices ( including 15 x Pupil Asus minibooks, 90 x Pupil Fujitsu-Siemens laptops, 20 x Pupil RM Laptops, 20 x Staff RM Laptops and my personal favourites 30 x Nintendo DS' and a Nintendo Wii ) - Told you we were spoiled... - A wireless network of 16 D-Link Access Points (unmanaged) The network is failing - painfully slow - because it isn't geared up for wireless access, so I want this to be the focus of our new network. I've had two quotes for a full install, one from a company supplying a Ranger server the other an upgrade to CC4 from RM. However, when I spoke to both companies they seemed very wary about a wireless solution - The Ranger company advised us to build a new building and put a wired computer suite in! Now, as you can see from our current wireless requirements and vision, that isn't going to happen! I am totally new to large-scale networks and would love to hear what other suggestions people have. My main questions: - What alternatives are there to Ranger and CC4? We have no in-house tech support and only one independent contracted technician that comes in two mornings a week. I would love to know if there were any other managed solutions I could consider? - Is a vanilla install an option without in-house support? Does anyone have any experience of external contracted network support? - What wireless solutions are there out there? (I've heard good things about Aruba?) - Is it simply a case of looking in the Yellow pages and ringing up some network installation companies and picking their brains or is there somewhere I can go for education specialist installs/discounts? Sorry for my massive ramble, if you haven't given up reading yet I would love some help on this one! Thanks again! Russell

Hi All We are looking to get rid of classlink 7 (and not before time) however it has served us well and still provides a fair few useful tools like disk quota management, applying printers to users or groups, a login from home and etc. So my question is, have any of you been down this road already ? and if so what solutions did you come up with what worked what and didnt. Many thanks Mark

Hi, We are a secondary school with 230 workstations - all networked as RM CC3. We are currently investigating whether to move to a standard vanilla network with Windows 7 or stick with RM and go CC4. The easiest option seems to be RM CC4 as there are only two of us in the department - Me (the technician) and the Network manager. Has anyone moved from CC3 to Vanilla? What kind of work was involved? We are thinking of using a consultancy company to help us with the initial install, migration of users, exchange e.t.c. so if anyone has any recommendations that would be useful. We have a Year to do this so we are thinking of setting up a new vanilla domain with windows server 2008 and a few workstations to test policies, software on e.t.c. It would be really helpful if you could share your personal experiences, costs and the time to migrate from CC3 to vanilla (or CC4) as we are currently at the stages of deciding which road to go down. Thanks Lee

Hi I'm after a bit of advice from anyone that may have gone through the same transition. I am network manager at a secondary school that is currently running RM CC4 network. There is a team of 3 technicians and we have been asked to look into moving the network over from CC4 to a windows network. I am about to start drawing up a plan but wanted to know if anyone has gone through a similar transition? Any advice you have? What you learnt? How long it took? How smoothly it went etc. We have about 500 PC's and 80 laptops that we would be connecting up. Also if you are using a windows network any tools / applications you believe are invaluable and found really useful. (Comparitive to the RMMC, RM Tutor etc). We are going to set up a test environment in the school with a laptop trolley. Could this be achieved by setting up a seperate OU on the server and having the laptops running to that? Thanks for any information.

We are currently looking at options other than the upgrade from CC3 to CC4, are there any recommended companies (or individuals?), preferably around the South West, that could help setup a new network during the summer and provide software support afterwards?
