Hi All, We have just installed a new managed wireless network on site. We used to have Ranger installed on the laptops which had to be taken off as Ranger Network was not designed for wireless networks. My question is how do i lock down the student areas similar to Ranger, will the new settigns conflict with the existing Ranger GPO settings? Are there other tools i could use in parallel with Ranger that can be installed on laptops only? We are running a Windows 2003 environment with XP clients. Regards A

Hi guys, I'm getting frustrated with ISA server - only installed this the other week, and have terminal services successfully being published through it, but I'm struggling with Ranger Outpost! I can tracert the address through to the interface of the ISA server, but traffic seems to get lost from there, and can't hit my outpost server. Have registered domain on both internal and external DNS, and ensured that the default gateway on the Outpost server is set to the ISA server. I'm guessing it's my settings on the ISA server, but being new to this beast (no training of course - I'll 'pick it up' - dear god!) I'm floundering a little. Anyone got this scenario working who could give me a helping hand?

Hi there. Has anyone had the issue where RM Ranger 8 will stop a log in with the message "Ranger License Server did not respond"? It may happen if the user tries again but will eventually allow a log in if the user keeps trying. There doesn't really seem to be any correlation to the issue and it can happen on any PC. It's really causing some stress. Lets say we have 400 log on's at one time only 4/5 will have this happen to them and the rest will log in no problem. First sign of the issue during log on: http://i.imgur.com/yQO7tk5.png Box which appears (user will be logged out): http://i.imgur.com/7dKa3UY.png Additional diagnostics: http://i.imgur.com/WZd9iW1.png I realise this is a complete stab in the dark but was just hoping to find others who have experienced the issue and what they did to resolve. Thanks for your time!

Right, let me start by saying hello! I have been a reader of Edugeek for a few weeks now but haven't made the leap into contributing anything yet... mostly because everyone seems so much more knowledgeable than me! So, let me pick your brains and tell you about my situation - hopefully the great intellect that is Edugeek can give me some advice! I work in a primary school in Kent (430 pupils) that would be considered by most other primary schools (maybe secondary too!) to be spoiled rotten when it comes to ICT provisions... and we are. Money is no object! Example: If you went to BETT and saw the 3D imaging setup in the RM 'Futures' presentation then you would have seen the 12 grand model. Our head has a vision that the school will be a leader in primary school ICT... and is putting in an order for the 6 metre screen at a whopping 18 thousand pounds... Ouch. But I am not hear to discuss the educational merit of a 3D PowerPoint presentation... I am here to discuss how BEST to spend around 20-25 thousand pounds on a brand new "future-proof" network capable of supporting a wireless device for every child into the next 3 years. We currently run a 4 year old RM CC3 network that is crippled by an ageing server and wireless network running on PC World bought D-link access points. One in each classroom... 30 laptops attempting to run off one AP... It doesn't take a genius to realise that we were going to run into problems - I'm new to the school by the way, so this was done before my time Essentially the head has said - "rip it out and start again, here's the money..." This is what we have now: - 1 server running a CC3 Curriculum and an Admin network - 20 wired classroom and office desktops - 175ish wireless devices ( including 15 x Pupil Asus minibooks, 90 x Pupil Fujitsu-Siemens laptops, 20 x Pupil RM Laptops, 20 x Staff RM Laptops and my personal favourites 30 x Nintendo DS' and a Nintendo Wii ) - Told you we were spoiled... - A wireless network of 16 D-Link Access Points (unmanaged) The network is failing - painfully slow - because it isn't geared up for wireless access, so I want this to be the focus of our new network. I've had two quotes for a full install, one from a company supplying a Ranger server the other an upgrade to CC4 from RM. However, when I spoke to both companies they seemed very wary about a wireless solution - The Ranger company advised us to build a new building and put a wired computer suite in! Now, as you can see from our current wireless requirements and vision, that isn't going to happen! I am totally new to large-scale networks and would love to hear what other suggestions people have. My main questions: - What alternatives are there to Ranger and CC4? We have no in-house tech support and only one independent contracted technician that comes in two mornings a week. I would love to know if there were any other managed solutions I could consider? - Is a vanilla install an option without in-house support? Does anyone have any experience of external contracted network support? - What wireless solutions are there out there? (I've heard good things about Aruba?) - Is it simply a case of looking in the Yellow pages and ringing up some network installation companies and picking their brains or is there somewhere I can go for education specialist installs/discounts? Sorry for my massive ramble, if you haven't given up reading yet I would love some help on this one! Thanks again! Russell

Hey all, Long time reader, first time poster, please go easy... I've worked at my current school as one of 3 Techs for around 3 years now. We're making the move to Windows 10 on our Student network (we have two domains) and It's a massive job, but we're planning and planning and planning. Server Upgrade and Migration, 400 Workstation Redeployment to Win 10, GPO Reconfiguration etc all over the first week of the summer holidays. One thing we're stuck on is a new network management solution. Currently we use the vastly outdated but still super great Ranger Remote Control and LANRanger. Unfortunately they aren't compatible with Windows Server 2016 & Windows 10 1803 (and for some reason RRC stops our AV from updating its definition) so we need to move onto something else. I've been looking at all sorts of solutions, me and one other Tech went to BETT where we saw a great bunch, however it was all quite sales-y and we didn't get the most in-depth look at them. We've made a list of crucial and good-to-have points of what our current system gives us and I just can't find any one (or two) softwares that include it all. The exception is Impero, however we're a fairly rural public school and as such budget is tight... So far I've looked into Impero, NetSupport, Senso, ABTutor, GoverLAN, and LANSchool. Here's what we're looking for in our network management - - Remote Control + Workstation sorted into 'Room' categories - Control of room by room of Workstations - Disable Internet access per workstation on the fly - Teacher Access (Cross Domain or Internet Browser UI) - Restrict Maximum Logons Per User - Title Checks (Auto-Close window based on partial/full title match from list of words) - Run software/apps/scripts en masse per room on the fly - Scheduled Workstation Power Off - Workstation activity Logs (event logs) We use PDQ Deploy and Inventory so that covers a lot of deployment and Wake on LAN etc. We have a few iPads so it'd be a plus If it was cross OS, but not essential... Some Storage Quota control would be nice but push comes to shove we can control that through Windows Server. We're using GPO to lock down a lot of things, so really it's that list above that we just need to be able to manage... Sorry to pour all this on, there are just too many options and none of them seem to do everything we need! Will

Anyone experiencing problems with attaching files to e-mail in OWA on a rangered PC? It would appear that anything up to about 125kB is fine but anything over that just sees the "Attachements - Web Page dialog" screen hang. I did try using the S/MIME Control and this seemed to make things better but OWA crashed when the e-mail was sent. I have removed Ranger and the attachments are fine. PCs are RM Ecoquiets; XP SP3, OS pretty well up to date. Paul Vernon Bracknell Forest

Has anyone on here used Ranger Guardian or a similar product. Im looking to get something like this in school and wanted to know how good it was and if there are alternatives? What we want to do is monitor what pupils are saying and doing on the network, not to the point of being Big Brother but for security and bullying purposes incase something of this nature is brought to our attention. Thanks Steve

Hi I am removing ranger from the school network however whenver I try to remove ranger from the RangerRemove login it doesn't do anything and I can't uninstall ranger from the control panel add/remove programs. Is there anyway of getting round this????

I have often wondered why there is a dirth of support articles in Ranger | Home regarding Win7. I have a support contract, now direct with RM rather than Sentinel/AMI, and can also login also to RM's support site with an account that they created for me. However, I thought I'd search RM support for Ranger windows 7 and remote control. Thare are many up to date articles that I cannot read because I don't have an "RM Support contract", even though my Ranger support contract is directly with RM. Phoined RM support and they confirmed this. Go figure. Next call to my account manager then RM's MD!

We have recently upgraded our network with new W2K8 servers which we have used DCPROMO to upgrade our AD to the new DC's. Unfortunately we had Ranger installed on one of our W2K3 DC's which has now been demoted, and to uninstall it it goes through the installation process and wants the server to be a DC. Please can someone help us remove Ranger Server from our server? Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks

This 1 is a cracker!! I have recently been made aware of an issue that started before christmas but has been getting progressivly worse and affecting more and more users. i've done some digging using the error message content and i've been sent everywhere and arrived nowhere! When users (not the same users) from any group try to log on to random machines they get the following message: Logon Denied. Group (say)"group1" is only allowed to logon to 1 workstation at a time and user is already logged at (say)"computer1". Nothing unuseral about that; it happens with forgetful kids, but the mystery is that "computer1" is the machine they are trying to log on to!!! How can you already be logged in to a machine you've only just sat down at!! I've asked around to try and find out when this started and no one seems to know (teachers being teachers i've only had two replies from about 10 heavy ICT room users), so i can't elliminate the fact that it might be the last ranger upgrade or even a windows server upgrade. This is completely random; a student could have it one day on a particular machine, try the same one after lunch and not have it, maybe not have the problem for days but get it again in a totally different room! I've looked at the clients event veiwers and the only error that flashes up as out of the ordinary before Rangers logged time for this problem is 1 for the w32time (event no. 35) but even that just says "synchronizing time with Server01" nothing about it failing though. I'm kinda hoping that it's just ranger being it's usual pants self so i can push for a skip trip but i think it might be this w32time, am i on the right track? oh and the ranger support site is well...i couldn't possibly say on a public forum. Please help!!!

anyone come across this problem - I've had to re-install Ranger Account Manager but it's getting stuck when trying to add a new DNS service record. I think this is a known problem as its in the RM knowledge library but as the school doesn't have a support contrct with RM then I cant access the details of how to resolve this - has anyone else had this problem and does anyone know how to resolve it? thanks

Well i have just took over a new primary school and there have ranger installed on the server. What is the easiest way to uninstall this and go back to a vanilla windows server. I have never used ranger so i don't have clue how to work it or how to remove it correctly.

At present the school whose computers I support has a single Windows 2003 server and around 60 workstations. They run Ranger along with Ranger Outpost. Our contract expired - without them contacting me about renewal - two weeks ago and I only discovered this on Monday when I went to carry out some admin work, found out I couldn't because Account Manager blocked me from altering anything and then, when I emailed Ranger support, got an email back telling me that 'due to changed terms and conditions' they couldn't offer me any help. What I'd like to know is whether or not there are any alternatives to Ranger. The incidence of vandalism here is practically nil and children are supervised at all times, so I'm not particularly worried about the need for workstation security. What I'd like, though, is a Ranger-Outpost-esque tool. At some point in the future it's probable that the school will be able to afford a new server and workstations but at present they can't. I'm just looking ahead at the moment. Does anyone have any suggestions? If possible I'd like to avoid RM. Thanks for your help.

Does anybody know Rangers default username and password for the test creator module within the software? We have had a new install and dont know what it is. Help would be much appreciated Thanks

OK, not sure whether this is a problem with RRC but some of the circumstances point towards it. I installed V10.01 as a trial on one PC as tutor, and one as student. Over the holiday the trial period lapsed and yesterday I got the licence details from out IT dept. I uninstalled RRC and then re-installed with the licence key on the tutor machine. At some point the machine stopped connecting to our network, but at that point I didn't connect the problem to RRC. IPCONFIG returns a 169***** address rather than the expected 10.*.***.***. IT Dept couldn't persuade it to connect to our network at all. This morning I went back to RRC using a different machine, added V10 Tutor and rolled out to the suite of 25 machines. I noticed that the test student wasn't available in remote deploy, all the rest were fine. On inspection of the recalcitrant student, it too is now showing the address 169.254.86.94 (not one of ours at all!). Any thoughts, has anyone else experienced this?
