Hello everybody, I wonder if anyone can help me. We currently have a bespoke tool written be a clever previous technician that can find a students home folder on the server and open it for any staff to access. Has anyone got any ideas how we could give access to all students OneDrive to all staff to do the same thing? I wonder if Salamander could give access to staff to all students OneDrives and then we have a list of URL's in a spreadsheet corresponding to a child? Has anyone else done similar to this? Thanks in advance

Hi all, We are using roaming profiles on windows 7 and are seeing more and more issues with student profiles. Students will work for a whole lesson and when it comes to saving they are sometimes prompted with a message "Word cannot open or save this file because the path name is too long", however the path they are saving is on the root of their documents.. We have been working around this by copying and pasting the work remotely and saving it for them in their areas, then doing a local and server profile reset which will fix the issue for the student. I have attached an image below of an example. We have around 860 students and this is happening approx 2 times a day, sometimes with the message "Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable". We've noticed that this one happens regularly if students or staff move computers each time they login, and it created a separate local profile in the format username.domain. If anyone that has experienced the same issues could comment that would be great.

Hi, So we've had a college student (former student at one of the schools in our federation) who has asked to come and volunteer/help out with the IT in school. Whilst he is here he, is looking at all aspects of IT in the school, he is going into lessons with the IT lead, but will also be spending some time with me (the IT tech). I'd really appreciate some ideas of what to show him, other than what I deal with on a day to day basis, callouts etc. I know its vague and generic, but what would you like to have been shown when considering working in ICT. I want to really show how interesting our world can be lol. Thanks

I have been approached by a group of students from our eFutures initiative to try and reduce the power consumption of our computer suites. They've noticed that they remain on during lessons when they are not used and so want to see if I can put them into standby when a user logs off. At first I thought this would be as easy as running a logoff script but that put the computer to sleep during the logoff process and when the computer was brought back the user logoff process had crashed. Has anyone managed to get this to work successfully, maybe with a scheduled task instead. I've found this script as well but I can get it to run as a student as yet as I get an undisclosed error and it just terminates. '** Script Name: "standby-hibernate.vbs" ** Option Explicit On Error Resume Next Dim strComputer, sUserName, bLoggedOn, bReboot, objWMIService, colComputer, objComputer Dim bStandby, objShell, sComputerName strComputer = "." Set objShell = WScript.CreateObject("Wscript.Shell") Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _ & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2") Set colComputer = objWMIService.ExecQuery ("Select * from Win32_ComputerSystem") Do While sUserName <> "null" For Each objComputer in colComputer sUserName = objComputer.UserName sComputerName = objComputer.Name If sUserName <> "null" Then bLoggedOn = True End If Next Loop If Err = 0 Then If bLoggedOn Then WScript.Echo sComputerName & " is not Logged Off." bStandby = False Else WScript.Echo sComputerName & " is Logged Off." bStandby = True End If Else WScript.Echo "Error accessing computer: " & strComputer bStandby = False End If On Error Goto 0 WScript.Echo "bStandby: " & bStandby If bStandby = True Then WScript.Echo "Going into standby..." 'Go to standby objShell.run "%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe Powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0", 0, False Else WScript.Echo "Not going into standby..." End If Any suggestions?

Hi all, bit of a strange problem, it's been passed to our local support team but I'm curious as to whether anybody else has experienced this. Occasionally when a CTF comes in, it'll create a duplicate of a student we already have on roll (this is very rare, but does happen!). When this happens, I copy over any details we're missing to the existing student entry, then delete the new, duplicated student (via "Routines > Student > Delete Student"). However, I realised today that whenever I try this, Sims crashes, and not just for me, but for everybody in school. Working with our network manager, we replicated the crash (first try) and noticed that the SQL Server's memory usage was continually growing while Sims said it was deleting the student, until eventually it crashed. Has anybody else had this problem? Also, in case it's worth mentioning, the student is still there with all details intact when you log back in to Sims. Regards, Josh

Hi everyone! It's great to have found a place for IT guys and gals who work in an educational setting to discuss issues! Here's mine: We allow students to bring their own laptops to the college. Previously we would install a wireless certificate, their printers AND all of their software that they needed, on all of their machines. This proved to be too time consuming and difficult to manage so we are hoping to put the media in their hands and allow them to install as much as they can themselves. I expect we will have to install wireless certs for them as giving them access to do this themselves seems risky. I am wondering if anyone else is doing this at their school and how you handle these students when they arrive on day one? How do they authenticate to the network? How do they get the software they need? How are printers managed? Anything else worth mentioning? Thanks for your input!

We have several differnet systems that the students have different passwords for (network, webmail, VLE). When students return after summer holidays we are finding that a lot of passwords are forgotten. Does anybody blanket reset student passwords when they return? If so how do you then notify students of the changed passwords?

Hello Everyone, We are just trialing what i thought was a great product. It installs like a dream, is super easy to use and ticks all the boxes we need. However, when using it we found that it couldn't find our wireless laptops and then discovered the broadcast / multicast settings that are needed. This doesn't work for a few reasons, a) we have 5 vlans, student desktop/wireless, staff desktop/wireless and server network. so straight away the 3 network options means we cant run it on all 5 vlans b) Broadcast traffic, it says in a manual I have been sent that my managed switches need to be configured to allow this traffic. Are you for real? Do i need to change all my switches for your software to work? c) If I am a techie who wants to use the tool for remote access I can use channel 0 (great stuff) but the the above vlan issue will stop it working how i need it to. Now I am wondering if I am completly wrong about all this and there is something I am missing, if anyone works in environment where you have this working, working well in a managed switch VLAN environment please let me know how you overcame these issues. Thanks Matt

Hi All, We have just installed a new managed wireless network on site. We used to have Ranger installed on the laptops which had to be taken off as Ranger Network was not designed for wireless networks. My question is how do i lock down the student areas similar to Ranger, will the new settigns conflict with the existing Ranger GPO settings? Are there other tools i could use in parallel with Ranger that can be installed on laptops only? We are running a Windows 2003 environment with XP clients. Regards A

Hi, We allow students two methods for bringing files in to school currently (until we decide on a VLE), first method, usb pen drives, second method email. Due to misuse of email during lessons and teachers struggling with tools such as NetSupport for blocking pages we have come to a point where we are now using transport rules to block KS3/KS4 students emailing other KS3/KS4 students. The rules currently block (silently drop) emails sent to KS3/KS4 students from outside our organisation. The rules currently block (silently drop) emails sent from KS3/KS4 students to anyone outside our organisation. The rules currently block (silently drop) emails sent from member of distribution list ( KS3/KS4 email group ) to a member of distribution list ( KS3/KS4 email group ). So basically KS3/KS4 students can email their teachers and KS5 students (on pain of being beaten up I suppose!). This is working, and working great, except I would like to permit them access to email themselves if possible. I realise that if Student1 were to email Student1 although they do not receive the email they will still have the mail (with any attachment) in their Sent Items. I would appreciate hearing from anyone with any ideas how we can work the transport rules to permit Student1 to email Student1 without being able to email Student2. Looking forward to your responses!

We're thinking of giving all teachers the ability to reset Google account passwords to enable to them to immediately resolve the in classroom 'I've forgotten my password' scenario for their pupils. We'd probably create a custom admin role restricted to just that. Apart from the need for a small amount of training on the steps can anyone highlight any downsides to consider. I guess opening up the Admin console awareness to so many is a slight concern, but it will be very limited to password resets for the pupil domains. I guess if there is a nifty app that provides a simple interface to do the same, that might be better, but it'll have to be cost free. Or perhaps if this was a function within google classroom, that would be ideal, but I could not see that it was an option.

Hello, can someone please lend me a hand with this one? Feel like I am hitting my head against a brick wall aha... I want to set up a default start menu for all student users. I’ve made sure I’ve got the latest ADMX files for Windows 10 1709. Is it possible to redirect the start menu like you could in Windows 7? I’d like to setup a start menu where each student user has the same pinned tiles to quickly access programs and that stops them accessing such things as CMD from the start menu. I have attempted to get this working using the Powershell cmdlet export-startlayout and then applying this via GPO. It does apply to the user I was testing but the tiles/groups I arranged loaded in a different format than what I exported them as, it looked all disorganised and some apps (Such as IE) didn't show up at all. I will get screenshots when next on site but will attach the .xml. I am also struggling to find a way to restrict the user access to CMD, Powershell etc… How can I do this for Windows 10? I want to get rid of these folders (Windows Powershell, Administrative Tools etc..) for the student users start menus and just have some of the windows apps and all the installed programs appear in the all programs list. Users just have Local Profiles in this current setup. Please tell me there is a nice neat, group policy way of doing this? Why have Microsoft made this so difficult? startlayoutv1.txt

Hi all, We're gradually looking to migrate from Google Apps for Education to Microsoft's Office 365. Google Apps for Education is great in allowing us to limit the features that are accessible to students. However, I'm struggling to see how this can be done in Office 365. Essentially, the first thing we'd like to do is to prevent students from seeing all distribution groups and all staff accounts in the 'People' section on the top menu bar. Obviously we'd still like students to be able to send and receive email to/from staff but we'd rather not let them see their personal profiles. What's the best method (if there is any at all) of restricting student accounts in Office 365? Thanks in advance for the help. Nick

Hi. I used SIMS for 12 years, and am now 2 weeks into getting my head around RM Integris. I can't find out how to export all staff timetables to excel. Was so easy in SIMS. Ideally want the staff code/name down the left, and all the days and periods across the top. I would also want to be able to do this for students too. Any help would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks Kirstie

Anyone know of anyway you can password protect a printer so that students cant just print whatever they please? ie: The teacher can come over and type a password or key to allow use of the printer? I work at an alternative school and some of the 6th grades like to print non school related material. I could just delete the printer off of the laptops but the teacher wants the ability to print word files and what not. We use windows 7 with HP printers. Any feedback would be helpful.

[sims] SIMS InTouch - General Student Message - User Defined Groups
J_Worth posted a topic in MIS Systems
Hello all, We have just started using InTouch and would like to be able to send a General Student Message (so we can make use of the Student tags to customise) to a user defined group. Our trips manager wants to send a passport reminder to students on the trip. They have setup a user defined group and added the students into this. However, when we go to "Send Student Message" we don't get an option to send it to contacts of students within the User Defined Group. It seems this can only be achieved by using the "General Message" which doesn't have the functionality of adding Student tags. Does anyone know if the above is possible? I really hope so as otherwise its very limited and isn't going to do everything we hoped it would. Many thanks in advance.- 1 reply

Hi All, I have been having a play about with Chromium OS today. Downloaded from Chromium OS builds by Hexxeh. Booted it up off a memory stick and worked really well . Just wondered if anyone had come across a way of being able to lock the settings down etc, so that the students cant fiddle. I know that at BETT Google were talking about the Chromebooks and being able to centrally manage them form a web interface ... but only if you buy a Chromebook with ChromeOS installed. I was thinking about maybe configuring some memory sticks with Chromium OS, giving them to some of the students on a trial and setting up a room or a suite of our netbooks so that if the Memory Stick is inserted into machine before its switched on it would boot upto that memory stick, that way if its the students personal one it wouldn't matter what settings they enabled/disabled/changed etc. Only thing that I can see wrong is that when ive tried it on a few different machines I have had to put in the WiFi Password and Proxy settings each time. Maybe there is a way around this? Any input would be gratefully received, might turn into an interesting thread ... ?!? Thanks Tom

Does anybody have students that are interested in IT and that you allow to help out? If you do what sort of thing do you allow them to do and are they able to use any elevated privileges (under supervision). We have a student who wants to help but we're finding it difficult to decide what we can let them do.

Hi, Apologies if this has already been covered, but a few searches didn't really bring an awful lot up... Does anyone have any written policies that they use for students connecting their own laptops to the school wireless network they wouldn't mind sharing? How do you do it and what security to you implement to help prevent the spread of nasties? Rather annoyingly, the powers that be say they want students to be able to do this after Christmas, and won't take no for an answer, so therefore I need a bullet-proof as possible policy/aup so we can nail the suckers up if they do anything stupid! Whilst I'm planning on only giving them internet access and possibly printing access on a separate SSID, there is always the potential for things to go wrong. Any help will be lovingly appreciated...

I am trying to establish a template for the printing of student timetables as 2 weeks shown on an A6 size. I understand the options for altering the view of a timetable prior to print etc but there is no way of saving this as default. I would like to either: Create a template (possibly using .XSL files to present the .XML data, then save that template for use. OR Create a way of exporting the Student timetables as a one line of data per row per pupil so that it can be mail merged into a template outside of SIMS. Can anyone help? Thanks in advance

Just curious but have any of you had any experience with this? https://www.prowise.com/en/personal-devices/edubook-360/ My biggest concern is the fact that it claims to run Windows 10 on a Celeron processor!☠️ I'm not a big fan of the design, its very circular - the Chromebook (also by Prowise) looks better, but we are a O365 school, so its a no-go. Main attraction is the price - £300 w/o VAT is a pretty good deal, compared to £600-700 for a HP or £800-1000 for a Macbook.

Hi Everyone, I'm curious as to what procedure you have in place for any student teachers you have in your schools. What do they have access to? You see they want: network logins to access the computer, Gsuite logins to access the shared files and access to the photocopier(we have papercut set up). We're trying to find the most efficient solution for students to be integrated without them having access to areas they shouldn't as they're not our employees? is it to treat them as such and make them sign their souls over to us to use our systems? How do you do it? Thanks

We have had a problem arise where a teacher at our school cannot access a student's home folder. He can access every other student's folder but not this one particular student's. The message reads: The student can access the folder. This is happening on the terminal servers we have in the school's farm. However, if the same teacher tries to access the home folder on a fat client, he can get into the folder. I have checked the security settings and compared them to another student's that can be accessed and i have deleted the teacher's RDS profile data and the student's. Thanks in advance for any help, Leigh

Morning everyone! I am looking towards moving towards a Windows 7 environment over the summer holidays. We all know how time flies, so I'm trying to get as much done now so I can hit the ground running over summer. As such, I have started to design and create student restriction policies using all the new Windows 7 specific GPOs. I'm happy with my progress up to this point, but there are 2 very specific things I cannot seem to restrict that are causing me a headache: I need to remove these as I don't really want students having an easy way to start poking about with network shares. Also, they seem freely able to browse Active Directory. I have checked pretty much everything in the GPOs but to no result. Is there something I'm missing?
