I’d like to know about other schools’ experiences migrating from on-premise file storage to OneDrive/SharePoint. Did you move to OneDrive user profiles? How do your user profiles work? Are they 100% cloud only? Currently we store on a NAS (all the usual file server features) and folder redirection. How do you handle the key Downloads/Pictures/Music? For those with apps like Adobe/Unity, anything to be aware of? Currently on AD/domain-joined so not Intune joined just yet. I am in the position to trial this with a small set of users, which will also tie in with an Intune migration eventually. Thanks.

"Error trying to get OneDrive settings" after user rename.
MrEprise posted a topic in Cloud Services
Having a bit of a panic attack while trying to sort this one. Renamed a user who either got married or divorced over the summer, and it's something I've done numerous times without issue but this time after the rename, they can't access their OneDrive and I get "Error trying to get OneDrive settings" if I try to access it via 365 admin. I've gone into SharePoint admin and verified that their personal folder still exists as far as that tells me but if I try to access the personal folder, I get "404 FILE NOT FOUND". I've tried renaming the user back but it's not changing the account name or personal site URL back and I've tried removing the OneDrive licence and adding it back in. Reason for the panic attack? We have no backups of any of our 365 tenant anymore. We did have Barracuda until January of this year where the trust stopped paying for it because it was deemed "too expensive" and there hasn't been any budget to buy any sort of replacement for it. We did also have access to our backup archive until yesterday when they'd sent an email informing us that we'd be losing it all. So you can imagine how I might be feeling right around now. 😢 -
This won't affect anyone on Windows 10 22H2 with ESUs, but if your plan to continue using Windows 10 involves using the LTSC version of 21H2 (EOL next year for non-IoT) or 1809 (EOL 2029), or you have a folder on your server (<2025, as 2022 is 21H2) syncing scanned documents (like we do) then you'll not be getting any more security or bugfix updates for OneDrive. Message Centre post: https://admin.cloud.microsoft/?ref=MessageCenter/:/messages/MC1426708 (including a copy below as the formatting on the message makes it unreadable - also note that they say 22H1 or earlier, but that doesn't exist as they moved to annual for the last year of W10)

Hello friends, Over the past week we've had three separate staff members create 600-800 folders across various SharePoint sites. I've done a few Purview reports and it looks like they were all pushed up by OneDrive SyncEngine within a 5 minute window each time. All three users are on OneDrive build 26.062.0402.0002. All events show ApplicationDisplayName: OneDrive SyncEngine. The pattern is the same each time, OneDrive SyncEngine accesses AllItems.aspx, then immediately generates hundreds of FolderCreated events. The affected libraries are ones users have added via "Add shortcut to OneDrive", not the Sync button (I have disabled sync button visibility this week in case that was causing issues). None of the three users had SharePoint libraries listed under OneDrive Settings -> Account as synced libraries. They're using shortcuts. Two different Windows builds affected (26100 and 26200), same OneDrive version on all As far as I can tell, the folders being generated are all old / archived stuff, and the folders are always empty. Any suggestions or help appreciated as always. Thanks

onedrive OneDrive sync app limit increasing to 1 million files
itskdog posted a topic in Cloud Services
Just saw this message on my M365 message centre: https://admin.cloud.microsoft/?ref=MessageCenter/:/messages/MC1294528 Requirements are as follows: (Most notable parts on the sync app config that people might not have in place, is enabling KFM, syncing SharePoint only through shortcuts, and setting up OneDrive sync reports on config.office.com) Looks good, will apply to most of our devices, just not the DfE laptops from COVID and some older devices that are still on 8GB RAM. I do wonder if this also makes for a faster sync time, or if it will take even longer to sync 1,000,000 files if you have them. -
With the current remote working, we are finding staff using their home computers for work and, in some cases, installing OneDrive (OneDrive for Business). What, if any, policy does your school apply to home use of OneDrive, bearing in mind that the computer can be left with potentially GDPR & safeguarding sensitive files on their local drive? I am interested even if you have no policy at present.

We a set to use onedrive for home areas and have been for 4 months, all SSO and onedrive sync works perfect with the exception of around 10% of workstations simply do not start onedrive on login (it takes around 30 seconds for it to normally start then redirect folders to the appropriate c drive location). Has anyone else experienced this? we tried upgrading to win 10 1903 plus latest version of onedrive 19.174.0902.0013 The way i am having to get around it is to manually go to the start menu and open the onedrive app, this loads up the correct onedrive experience as expected

We are currently testing out OneDrive and I have it working with single sign on but our users can’t access the OneDrive folder due to the C drive being restricted on our network. I was wondering how other schools have managed to get around this when deploying OneDrive?

SharePoint / OneDrive domain rename in an education tenant
jakeives posted a topic in Cloud Services
Hi All, I'm working with a very large academy trust who have recently rebranded. I wondered if any of you have renamed your SharePoint URL per the guidance here: Change your SharePoint domain name - SharePoint in Microsoft 365 | Microsoft Learn and have any real-world stories to tell following completion of this? We're concerned that renaming the SharePoint domain will break certain aspects of class teams. Look forward to hearing from you Thanks a lot- 8 replies

Hello everybody, I wonder if anyone can help me. We currently have a bespoke tool written be a clever previous technician that can find a students home folder on the server and open it for any staff to access. Has anyone got any ideas how we could give access to all students OneDrive to all staff to do the same thing? I wonder if Salamander could give access to staff to all students OneDrives and then we have a list of URL's in a spreadsheet corresponding to a child? Has anyone else done similar to this? Thanks in advance

Hi, We have recently rolled out a new 365 Tennant (migrated from an old Tenant) and I want users to be able to access a Teams enabled SharePoint Library on their Windows PCs from explorer via the shortcut rather than sync method. Is there a good document on how to set this up even MS webpages seem out of date due to interface changes. I'm completely new to 365 and MS cloud in general. Found this https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/add-shortcuts-to-shared-folders-in-onedrive-for-work-or-school-d66b1347-99b7-4470-9360-ffc048d35a33 but feel there is more to it than this and feel i need more explanation/background to how SharePoint libraries work with endpoints etc. Also found this https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/office/enable-publishing-features-479677a6-8b33-4ac7-907d-071c1c7e4518#ID0EBD=Web but i get an "something went wrong error" but I think this is because this is a legacy thing now and is not possible with "new" libraries

Does anyone have/know of a way to insert a folder into every users Onedrive so that on the users first log in to onedrive, there is already a folder there to sync? We are currently moving to a Work folders/One Drive hybrid instead of using home drives and offline files. During testing this is working the way we wish, however it would be much smoother if by default there was a "Work" folder already in their OneDrive, rather than talking them through how to create a folder, and then set One Drive to only sync that folder. - We do not want them sync'ing their whole One Drive down to their work pc's.

Is it possible to rename SharePoint 2013's storage to something a bit easier for end-users to understand? When have on-premises SharePoint and the storage area was originally called SkyDrive Pro, abbreviated to SkyDrive. This was confusing because Microsoft's publicly available service was also called SkyDrive. Then with SP1, they re-branded it to OneDrive for Business, abbreviated to OneDrive. 'Excellent news' I though, 'that will save confusion'. But then I realised the publicly available SkyDrive has also undergone re-branding, it's now called OneDrive too! This is a nightmare for our teachers who use a personal OneDrive/SkyDrive to understand. 'I uploaded a file to my OneDrive, but when I click on OneDrive in school it's not there'. I have to explain that there are actually two OneDrive's, both called OneDrive, but containing different files in two different places. Has anyone been able to rename it without having to hack around with SharePoint too much?

Hi all, Got a problem here with users sharing folders and files from OneDrive online.... this is web and OneDrive app. The user shares a folder with X, sets desired permissions.... the share recipient gets an email notification and can open the file in 'Sharepoint view'... e.g. not the usual OneDrive interface. There is a period of about 45 mins before the shared file/folder appears in the share recipients 'Shared' folder in OneDrive online... if it appears at all ! Weird bit...... If the share recipient has another folder that has previously been shared by the same user, enters the folder, then clicks the users name in the breadcrumbs above the file list, the folder/file is there! Any ideas or has anyone else experienced the same? This is causing migraines !! Cheers in advance

Afternoon all, Just wondering if anyone else has come across this problem or its just me? Upon testing a new install i noticed the C: Drive on a fresh machine was maxed out, a bit of digging and it appears OneDrive was syncing my entire directory to the device, or at least windows thinks it is! (despite files on demand being turned on). This has happened on a few machines with the 2024-07 Cumulative Update installed so i thought i'd cross check a device that didn't have the update. The device that didn't yet have the update worked fine and the C: drive was normal, i noted the Onedrive client version as 24.151.0728.0003 and proceeded to install the update. After it had completed i noticed the C: was now full like the other devices, I checked the OneDrive version again and it had changed to 24.146.0721.0003 which leads me to believe there's a bug in that version and the July update is installing it. I've created a quick fix script to remove the affected version and reinstall using Winget, this puts it back to 24.151.0728 and the storage issue is no more. https://liam-robinson.co.uk/july-2024-onedrive-client-disk-space-bug-workaround-fix/ I can't find anything online so I'm thinking it might just be me that's affected, has anyone else come across this? Hey all, I have convinced our school to finally attempt to move from on-site storage for all files to onedrive - beginning with the admin team. Currently, our file structure is an absolute mess and it's impossible to find files unless you've worked here for years and understand the jumble. I'm just looking to see if anyone has any suggestions on file structure or examples to look at. Trying to avoid bringing over years of unused files as there has never been a proper archiving structure put in place. Thanks in advance,

Hi all, Past week or so, it's been noticed that specifically Word Online through office.com, OneDrive or our SharePoint Online is taking around 15-20 seconds to save each time a change is made. I cannot find a single thread or post about this online. When a change is made, the auto-save feature kicks in but doesn't save anything for ages. When I go to click edit in desktop mode or save as it hangs for a little while as if it's waiting for the auto-save to finish. To be clear, this is on Word Online not the desktop app. Cannae find a single setting for it either. Any help would be appreciated! Cheers!

Has anyone managed to get Word/Excel documents embedded in a non-SharePoint publicly accessible website? According to Microsoft it is officially supported (MS KB Article) but when I use the 'File > Share > Embed' option in the web based version of Word/Excel this defaults to only allowing users within our tenant access. I'm fairly sure this could be resolved by adjusting the defaults within the admin sharing options but for obvious reasons I don't want to do that for the entire tenant. Which lead me to this YouTube video ( ). TLDW; essentially use the share option and add '' to the end of the URL in the iframe. Looks promising but my results have been inconsistent. Works fine in Firefox. Doesn't work in Chrome. Works in Safari on MacOS. Doesn't work in Safari on iOS or iPadOS. So dig a little further the blog post attached to the YouTube video above links to a more detailed (MS KB Article) suggesting it is supported but also has a small number of comments with some people having it working and some not (nothing conclusive). Have I missed something? To answer the obvious question; we don't just want to link to a word document that can be downloaded as we want staff to be able to edit the document without having to pass it back through our developer I keep being told 'gSuite does this out of the box' which isn't helpful. Thanks in advance Simon

Attempting to block the C Drive to students, but push OneDrive as a default. The issue is that when blocking the C drive, OneDrive also becomes blocked. there has also been no success when trying to hide the C drive, either through the GPO 'Hide these specified drives in My Computer' or through the Registry edit of 'NoDrives' (value: 4). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We are replacing all home drives with OneDrive which seems to be the common thing to do nowadays. I'm trying to develop a smooth process so we don't have to wipe users' profiles from the machine so they lose all local settings etc. The process is currently as follows: 1. Turn off folder redirection GPO which directs folders to local path 2. Turn on KFM GPO so the Documents, Desktop and Picture folders are synced up to OneDrive, leaving videos and music local on the laptop. The problem we have is that some users' home drives are pretty large (some over 100gb) and when we apply the folder redirection, this can take quite some time to move back to the local profile which at the beginning of a lesson isn't great! Just wondering how everyone else went about this when trying to keep existing user profiles. Thanks in advance!

Hi all, We're IAM Cloud - the forum sponsors. I wanted to make this sticky post a bit more useful for people searching for solutions in the Office 365 / cloud IT space. We've created a number of products that solve problems IT managers can sometimes run into. Here's a run-down of the problems our products can help solve (in no particular order). Problem 1) We want to provide our users with mapped drive letters to OneDrive, SharePoint or Microsoft Teams for our desktop and/or VDI or terminal environments. Solution 1) Cloud Drive Mapper. It's our most popular product. Does what it says on the tin but has a few nice extra features too. Affordable and very simple to configure and deploy. You can try it for free too. Problem 2) We want to migrate our Home Drives data to OneDrive for Business. Solution 2) Cloud Winch. Automates the entire migration process, configured in just a few clicks, and affordable. Problem 3) We're a Multi-Academy Trust (or similar) and we have multiple separate Office 365 tenancies that we want to migrate/merge into one central tenancy. Solution 3) Lift&Shift. Cloud-based platform that migrates all your Exchange Online, OneDrive for Business, SharePoint/Teams, OneNote and other Office 365 data from one tenancy to another. Problem 4) We want our users to be able to securely reset their own passwords remotely and re-write the new password back to Active Directory, but we can't justify the costs of Azure AD Premium. Solution 4) Surp4ss! (Surpass). Browser-based password reset with AD-writeback, with school-branded design, configurable policies and different reset methods. Comes with a client MSI you can push to domain joined machines to enable password reset from the Windows login screen too. You can try this for free too. Problem 5) We want to save time with provisioning and deprovisioning accounts by synchronising data from your student system, such as SIMS or Bromcom. Solution 5) IDxSIMS / IDxBromcom (other integrations available) is our identity provisioning & synchronisation service. It makes staff/student IT onboarding much easier, while removing dead accounts quickly, increasing security. Problem 6) We want single sign-on and MFA for our applications and can't find an affordable solution that meets our requirements. Solution 6) Simple Sign-On. Affordable but it has all the main features you need from an SSO platform. It's also flexible and avoids some issues Azure AD can face, especially in Trusts with MANY:MANY 1:MANY MANY:1 relationships between AD and Office 365. Last thing to mention: Support. Support is included in everything we offer, and we will happily go above and beyond wherever we possibly can to help our customers. I know that this sounds like the kind of spiel that every company says, but if you know us, hopefully you'll know this is true. I can sometimes miss replies to forum threads, so if you have any questions about any of the above, please feel free to email me at [email protected] Thanks! Leon

Good afternoon, I have been a long term watching in the forums and seen that a lot of schools are starting to move to onedrive for homedrives and sharepoint for network drives, Just a few questions : I would be mapping the shared network drive using the ondrive GPO - how does this work with MFA? How have people got round the 256 character limit, as teachers love having subfolders, was it just a culture change? Finally, how do you manage student logins, as adding the sharepoint using the gpo can take anywhere from 5mins to 8hours. Thanks and regards

Hi, Apologies if I am missing something really obvious, but one of the schools I support has noticed that their OneDrive now shows students on the autocomplete when they go to share a file. The students are hidden from the Global Address Book (but this only seems to apply to Outlook) They'd like to remove the students from the auto complete to remove the risk of a member of staff inadvertently sharing something with a student that shouldn't be. Any help would be much appreciated.

Unless I am very much mistaken, the ability to anonymously share folders in OneDrive has disappeared for us within the last few days... I can share individual files (with no sign in required), but not folders. Is this a 'feature update' or has something gone awry? Many thanks clever peeps.
