Hi all, We are using roaming profiles on windows 7 and are seeing more and more issues with student profiles. Students will work for a whole lesson and when it comes to saving they are sometimes prompted with a message "Word cannot open or save this file because the path name is too long", however the path they are saving is on the root of their documents.. We have been working around this by copying and pasting the work remotely and saving it for them in their areas, then doing a local and server profile reset which will fix the issue for the student. I have attached an image below of an example. We have around 860 students and this is happening approx 2 times a day, sometimes with the message "Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable". We've noticed that this one happens regularly if students or staff move computers each time they login, and it created a separate local profile in the format username.domain. If anyone that has experienced the same issues could comment that would be great.

[ms office - 2019] split mail merge to separate documents
chazzy2501 posted a topic in Office Software
Any sensible way of splitting a mail merge document. I need to save it out as separate files to send via parent mail. So far I see installers, addons and pdf splitter web program. I saw a tutorial on splitting headers in Youtube but it didn't work with our document. is there no native way of doing this without having to trust some obscure program from a random website. I couldn't find anything in the office store either.- 1 reply

Morning Everyone, I am wondering if anyone else has come across the same issue as ourselves. We installed some new PCs over summer with Windows 7 and Office 2010. We also rebuilt some existing machines with the same config. All these machines, when you select clipart in the Office apps, and choose Find more at Office.com, are getting this web page error: http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/images/?CTT=6&ver=14&app=winword.exe. Anyone else had this and managed to solve it? By the way, I have added *.microsoft.com, microsoft.com, office.com and office.microsoft.com into the Sophos firewall but it doesn't look like a firewall issue - it looks more an MS link issue to me. Thanks A

My Microsoft Word Document will be working perfectly fine, and then all of the sudden it says that there is not enough space to save this document. So i can continue typing but i cannot copy or paste anything, and when i try and save it, it says: "The network or path where you are trying to save this document is unavailable. What do you want to do?" and it gives me the option to "retry", "save as" or "cancel". When i click save as and try to save it as a different name, or in a different location, it still doesnt work. I try saving it as a .docm file as well. Please Help!

Hopefully somebody might be able to point me in the right direction or has a clue what I am babbling about. As a mail merge setup is too difficult for some members of our Admin team to grasp the concept of, I thought that setting up the letter template in a report for SIMs might be more useful for them. So the setup is this. The letter template is ready to roll however the data required is captured from the report found in Reports - Attendance - Selected Pupil Reports - Pupils with Chosen Code Report. Is there any way to modify this report so that it can include pupil address, the selection of a date range and specifically the code 'L' for Late. Then using this to merge the data into the predefined word template? This would save a lot of time and hassle in the fact the 2 months later I would probably need to train the users on mail merging again. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Hi all, I have a problem at a few of my schools, when they open up their office template some of the pictures are not displaying. All you get is a the black box with the little red cross in the corner. It seems to be profile related. On profiles it works for it will work on all computers and on profiles it doesn't work for it doesn't work on all computers. Just wondered if anyone had seen this before and if so what did they do to fix it. Thanks Spencer

Hi all, Past week or so, it's been noticed that specifically Word Online through office.com, OneDrive or our SharePoint Online is taking around 15-20 seconds to save each time a change is made. I cannot find a single thread or post about this online. When a change is made, the auto-save feature kicks in but doesn't save anything for ages. When I go to click edit in desktop mode or save as it hangs for a little while as if it's waiting for the auto-save to finish. To be clear, this is on Word Online not the desktop app. Cannae find a single setting for it either. Any help would be appreciated! Cheers!

Is it possible to see which users on a network have accessed a word document/PDF file on a shared drive? Or is there some VB code that would provide similar? Many thanks

Hi, Kind of posted about this yesterday but in the wroong section asking for the wrong advice. Our librarian has, over the last few days, had problems with the font drop down in office - (word, powerpoint and publisher at least - don't think she's tried the others). It juust opens, blank and then crashes the whole program. Takes ages to force close. Nothing else is running at the same time, I have been through and deleted about 90 fonts that were unneccesary (no idea how they got there but the PC has been there about 10 years so someone must've installed them before I worked here). Still the same problem. Not really sure where to go from here, no one else is having this problem to my knowledge. She has 2gb of RAM so more than enough for what she needs. Nothing else has changed on her set up recently. Anyone got any ideas? Really at a loss!

I know from the title this is going to sound like a total PEBKAC question but it's got me stumped... We upgraded an environment to Server 2016 / W10 / Office 2016 from Server 2008 / W7 / Office 2007 One or two users complained of a text disappearing in their word docs (which upon inspection were 97-03 format). When they had a table (with text in each cell) and a cell in the middle of the table was split the text in the cell directecly next to it (to the right) disappeared and also the cell became unclickable see here for an example So my first thoght was let me see if I can make it do it, So I copied the doc to my laptop (also on word 2016) and opened it, and it displayed everything just fine. these laptops are all pretty fresh (built with MDT a few weeks ago) One teacher mentioned that it also displayed fine on another teachers laptop but I didnt see this happen so not the most reliable of sources. what are your recommdations with how to proceed here? Should I rebuild the laptop? (files are all redirected so it wouldnt take very long at all)

Hello all, I have a complicated problem that I need a simple solution for… I work for a special school that uses several annual report word templates that require manual collation at the end of the report writing process. So an example of the different templates that might be needed would be: Child A: Key Stage 2 Generic report template Horse riding template Swimming template Community visit template Where as Child B might need: Key Stage 5 Generic report template Work experience template College placement template Activity centre template So, what I’m after is some sort of wizard that the user goes through when they open up what I want to be the one word template to rule them all. I see it as Working in the following way: 1. Teacher opens the template 2. They get a menu or drop down asking what key stage they are in 3. Then all the templates are collated based on more questions… 4. Does the student do Horse riding? 5. Does the student do Swimming? 6. Does the student do Community visits? 7. Does the student do Work experience? 8. Does the student go to a College placement? 9. Does the student go to the Activity centre? 10. The document is now ready for authoring. Has anyone managed such a system and how did they do it? Cheers in advance… j.

Morning! We're in the process of moving our Staff documents into OneDrive & have run into the problem of Data Files for Mail Merges not playing nicely with OneDrive. If you start a mail merge using a data source that is synched in OneDrive, the error message " is open in another application. Please close it and try again." In this case, the file is a .docx word file within the users documents. So far, work-arounds include pausing OneDrive sync while working on the mail merge, or copying the data file to a location not synched to OneDrive but neither of these are exactly seamless for the user. Has anyone else found a way to resolve this or a better work-around? Thanks in advance!

Hey Everyone At our school we currently have a excel spreadsheet for tracking educational visits that all teachers can access and add their trip info which then gets merged across to a word document that they take out with them. Is there anyway to do this as a shared document on office 365 as we have been experiencing issues where users keeping getting the locked for editing message and we want to find a better way to do it. I know mail merge in O365 Online is not a thing right now? Thanks Dan

Hi all, This is an odd one and I'm not even sure it's possible. Currently, and for some reason beyond my payscale, we use mail merges to import grades and make reports in word. This is just used for EYFS and not other depts. is it possible for me to check whether the mergefield is true or false and if true add an X, instead of the value in excel. My table looks like this. I have made bookmarks to reference Attainment(1-3) in each column in Word. and this is the mergefield from excel. I guess i want to say "if mergefield = Attainment1 display X, if false dont show anything. I would then use this for each column of attainments 1-3. Ideally I would just add the data but they don't want it changed. If anyone has any ideas on how to tackle it I'd love to hear. Many thanks

Hi all, Since coming back there now seems to be a weird problem with office 2007 apps (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher and Access) Users can open Word documents from network drives, or create a new document, when they press the save button(after successfuly browsing their h:) the dialog box greys and an a (Not responding) message appears on the title. The computer is still usable for other things and if they leave the computer alone, the document is eventually (After 5 mins or more) saved. Not ideal when they all come to save at the end of a lesson. It is only office that is affected, any other program saves without delay. It must of been something that changed over the summer that caused it, but I'm not sure what. File servers are the same (Running 2008 R2), sofware and image are the same... I had a very similar problem when I was setting up a new Windows 7 suite, but this was resolved by setting the Web Client service to automatic. The computers that are affected already have this service automatic and running, and are XP OS. Staff, and administrators do not have this save problem using the same machine that would cause a student a problem. I'm currenty thinking it could be: Network traffic related, but I have no way of measuring how the network is performing, I installed wireshark but its all gibberish to me. Our switches are mainly 3com 4400s Printer related - No printers have changed, but I've seen office do stupid things if it's waiting for a printer to respond. DFS related - Our file shares use DFS Windows Update related Has anyone else had this, and solved it, or can suggest anything else to try?

This is becoming the bane of my life at the moment... I have always had trouble getting my scripts to work properly on SIMS generated Word XML files and them throwing an error because the reference to IndRepBaseTemplate.dot has been lost, but it seems things have gotten much worse since the latest update and many of my previous workarounds no longer work. Today I've come across the worst yet though: after exporting a batch of reports last night, today I can't open a single one of them. Each time, Word locks up and eventually closes and upon re-opening tells me that IndRepBaseTemplate.dot caused a serious error. Any body else had this issue? Better yet, any body found a way to fix it? I'm using Word 2010 in Windows XP Pro. So far, I have tried (all worked before last SIMS update but no longer help): Putting a copy of IndRepBaseTemplate.dot in the same folder as the exported reports Writing a VBA routine to stop IndRepBaseTemplate being loaded when the document is opened Loading up an Individual Report in SIMS (which in turn puts a fresh copy of IndRepBaseTemplate in my temp folder) PS: can anybody from Capita explain why IndRepBaseTemplate is needed in an exported report? I understand that when editing a template it is needed to add the context menus for adding aspects etc., but it does nothing but cause grief in the final document - surely you can find a way of removing the reference upon export? Even opening up a report in Linked Documents it throws an error!

Hi, I want to insert a pagebreak in a mailmerge. I am trying to print out class lists, and can do it if I manually filter the classes one at a time, but it's very slow. I'd just like to be able to fire-and-forget. You can see from the embedded image, that the class name changes. At the point where it changes, I want to be able to insert, or force, an automatic pagebreak. For the life of me, I have not been able to find a way of doing this. Any suggestions?

[ms office - 2003] Update Checkbox field to another checkbox
Chuckster posted a topic in Office Software
The title says it all really. When a checkbox has been checked I want it to update another checkbox automatically that's further on in the document. Is this possible in Word - if so, how? -
We have a rare (but none-the-less, re-occuring) problem with Word (and sometimes Publisher, but nowhere near as often). For some reason when working on Word, a user goes to click on the 'Save' button, nothing happens. Same goes for clicking on 'Save As ...'. Absolutely nothing happens. Clicking on the save to PDF/XPS button does, however, give the save dialog box, but only to save as PDF/XPS (as it should). The fix for this is (so far), is to get the user to logout of the PC, then log back in. This is ok as long as the user has basic text, tables and pictures on the document, as the work can be copied out of Word and into Wordpad (it's just Word that has this problem, no other program does). Unfortunately, due to the type of user account that is most used, we can't look at any system/reg settings because of restrictions, and logging the user out for one of us to log in fixes the problem anyway. In a way this wouldn't be as bad if user's saved their work as soon as they create the documents ... but 90% of the time, the user has done "hours of work" only to find they cannot save.

Hi guys, I'm trying to help a colleague remotely, she is having an issue with opening/saving Word documents. She is part of a school network and uses a temporary user profile when working from home. Normally all is well however she can't open/save any Word documents. The problem seems to lay in C:\Users\'Username'\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office with the MSO2057.acl file which is an AutoCorrect file. It is suggesting Word does not have enough memory to work when she tries to save. The error message exactly is 'Word has insufficient memory. Do you want to save Document 1 and RescuedDocument 2?' - This also prevents her opening existing files etc... I'm limited to what I can do as I'm obviously not connected to the network, I have a feeling the issue is to do with permissions but I'm not sure. Has anyone ever had an issue/experience with the MSO2057.acl file and is there anything I can do to fix this without being connected to the network (working on a temporary profile)? Many thanks, Dan.

Does SharePoint OCR documents? I've uploaded some scanned as PDF documents but without OCR software, so a picture in a PDF. I noticed that when I previewed the PDF in SharePoint it opens in a word preview and the lines are selectable and you can even copy and paste the words out again. So does SharePoint OCR documents and make them searchable? or is this an anomaly of the word preview in SharePoint? The PDF seems unchanged and I can't find an OCR'd version of it. EDIT: Also using Bing work search I can't find the document but it was only uploaded 20 minutes ago.

I have an Excel report output from our MIS which shows incidences recorded for staff. Column 1 shows the name of the staff member with column 2 showing each incident recorded. At the moment my mail merge will produce a separate letter for each incident...meaning that I have multiple letters for some...I'd prefer to be able to merge several rows into one doc if possible ( i.e. name appears once with pertinent column 2 incident entries). Simplest solution possible appreciated.
