Thought I'd share this nugget of intel having spent the last few hours drilling down through the list of possible causes for some BSOD issues I was hitting. Scenario: - Gigabyte Z97 Sniper MB - Intel CPU - Gigabyte - System information viewer installed - Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) installed - Avast anti-virus installed Symptoms: - Intel XTU was not providing the CPU frequency and also reported it was being blocked from reading some information (but not crashing) - System information viewer was running when first installed (before any AV installs) but some weeks later (after no use) was BSOD crashing when run Cause: - Avast uses something called "hardware assisted virtualization" which obviously conflicts with these utilities Solution: Avast (2015) - Open Avast user interface (ie: double click the avast system tray icon) -> Settings -> Troubleshooting -> Un-tick/select "Enable hardware-assisted virtualization" option** ** There are warnings about doing this and the effect this change will have for things like sandbox so it may be something you choose to do when you need to do hardware monitoring tasks and then re-enable during "normal" usage. Result: - Intel XTU now reads and shows the CPU frequency in its monitor display - Gigabyte System Information Viewer no longer BSOD crashes Additional notes: I strongly suspect this issue extends to other hardware utilities for things like monitoring, overclocking, etc, and on numerous other motherboard types, etc... So, if you see any others that apply, please tag them on so others can find the issue and solution. Thanks Keywords (just to help others searching for this issue): anti virus, crash, blue screen, cpu, processor, monitoring, hardware

Hi all, bit of a strange problem, it's been passed to our local support team but I'm curious as to whether anybody else has experienced this. Occasionally when a CTF comes in, it'll create a duplicate of a student we already have on roll (this is very rare, but does happen!). When this happens, I copy over any details we're missing to the existing student entry, then delete the new, duplicated student (via "Routines > Student > Delete Student"). However, I realised today that whenever I try this, Sims crashes, and not just for me, but for everybody in school. Working with our network manager, we replicated the crash (first try) and noticed that the SQL Server's memory usage was continually growing while Sims said it was deleting the student, until eventually it crashed. Has anybody else had this problem? Also, in case it's worth mentioning, the student is still there with all details intact when you log back in to Sims. Regards, Josh

Got a bit of a wierd problem when using Excel 2003. The user has 3 or 4 different sheets open, as well as other applications, word, IE, 3rd party DB application. At random times, suddenly the user will switch to excel to work and all the cells and text/numbers within the cells is massive (like font 80 or something) and the sheet is completely unreadable. the windows are still operating and you can switch between apps and between excel sheets, but you can't get the graphics back to normal. The user has to close the sheets and then excel crashes (send error report?) and then you can reopen the sheets and carry on. I have never seen anything like this - it doesn't seem like graphics card error, as all the other windows and apps behave normally. Don't know if it is excel corruption or what else to consider - have already reinstalled office!

Hi All, I got a chance to revisit Wortha Farm and fun some via FPV. It was a beautiful day but I was haunted by the ever present wind. I got plenty of turbulence coming off the banks of the stream while I was low down which just made it even more fun. There was no damage caused by the crash as you can see in the photo at the end. Hi All, CamSump and I went to revisit Burrator Reservoir on a beautiful sunny day. My Quadcopter gets two unintentional dunks into fresh water all captured by my GoPro Black in its water proof case. My Quadcopter is not water proofed at all so it was a big risk flying over water at any time but I find it adds to the excitement and joy of flying FPV close proximity. The last crash is due to me flying past the time when I know I should of landed but I thought to myself "Oh just one more time for luck"...oh dear Best viewed full screen @1080p

Hi All, Oh dear, my Quadcopter spent over 24hrs at the bottom of a river. Here are the results of the recovered footage and how the flight was meant to happen. Best viewed full screen @1080p Well after a good cleaning with distilled water and many days drying out, the damage was quite minimal: 1x 2200mAh 3S 25C Lipo - registered 0.05v. I had borrowed this from my spotter CamSump (sorry mate) 1x 20Amp ESC - it still ran the motor but at very low RPM and was twitchy 1x Sony PZ0420 Camera - Works perfect indoors but no longer reacts to light outside (white wash) The flights in the video are in reverse order. I had a great flight and landed without issues, the battery alarm was not going off but I knew power was low. As I was taking my FatShark goggles off one of my spotters mentioned they saw a Common Crane (bird) in a tree, so me being someone that want to capture everything via my Quadcopter thought I would 'just' pop up to get a shot, Bad move!. I miss judge the speed I am descending and apply throttle too late. About 10 minutes of underwater footage was recovered only due to the battery in the GoPro Hero 3 Black Edition running out. The GoPro footage captured about 25 fish in total and had the sound of Lee (spotter) and I diving into the water in search of the Quad. Underwater we could hear the battery alarm and ESC's bleeping away but could not pin point its location with only half a meters visibility in very cold murky water. Thank you SO much to my friend Basil Brush (nickname) for coming to my Quadcopters rescue with his skills and Scuba gear, what a star. Also great thanks to CamSump and Lee for all their help and keeping me calm Has anyone else had to recover anything expensive and electrical from a river that would like to share their story and whether the item still worked afterwards?

Hi, Kind of posted about this yesterday but in the wroong section asking for the wrong advice. Our librarian has, over the last few days, had problems with the font drop down in office - (word, powerpoint and publisher at least - don't think she's tried the others). It juust opens, blank and then crashes the whole program. Takes ages to force close. Nothing else is running at the same time, I have been through and deleted about 90 fonts that were unneccesary (no idea how they got there but the PC has been there about 10 years so someone must've installed them before I worked here). Still the same problem. Not really sure where to go from here, no one else is having this problem to my knowledge. She has 2gb of RAM so more than enough for what she needs. Nothing else has changed on her set up recently. Anyone got any ideas? Really at a loss!

Hi All, Here are some video's that I did over the recent holidays we had. The first two have a few clips of my friend learning to fly his Hexacopter which he built using the parts list I posted on EduGeek. All best viewed in fullscreen@720p FPV Quadcopter Holiday Fun with crash FPV Quadcopter The Bears go down to the woods today FPV Quadcopter Winter Time This last video is a bit shakey because I had a damaged front arm and I later found out I had a bent motor shaft which was sending the flight controller into a quivering mess lol but I was in such a rush to get in the air to capture some snow before it melted that I did not mind. Check out my channel if you want to see more or subscribe so you know when I add a new one https://www.youtube.com/user/jab1a/videos?view=0 So did anyone build a multicopter over the holidays?

Hi, My DC running Server 2008R2 has crashed big time! The disc, which was in RAID mirror mode, is unbootable. However, I can remove the disc and access all the files. I have a "bare metal" backup but this won't restore. The server is flaky even if I re-install a clean copy of Server 2008R2, so I suspect a hardware fault. I have ordered a new server but if the backup doesn't work (I suspect it is corrupt) then I have no option but to start from scratch. I am inclined to install Server 2012R2 in this case, but is there any way of extracting the data/info for DHCP, DNS, AD & GPO from the old 2008 (non-bootable) disc? Or do I have to accept that I need to start from scratch and re-build the GPOs, AD and DHCP? The school have been without their data for 3 days now :-( Dave

Hi everyone I've been trying to sort out the new staff laptops with Windows 7 and Office 2010. So far most things have gone in OK but I've now hit a stumbling block. When a member of staff uses the laptop off the network (at home or somewhere in the school without network access) Word decides to play silly buggers. It refuses to open any thing via the File > Open menu giving an Insufficient Memory error and asks if you want to save the current doc in a recoverable format. Saying No crashes Word. If you try and open a file (say off a USB stick) Word gives and error about problems with the normal.dotm file and then crashes. I'm a bit stuck as to what the cause of this is and its now holding up distributing the new laptops to staff so would like it sorted soon. Has anyone got any ideas as to whats causing this or what I can do to sort it out? Cheers James

Hello, Can anyone please help me with this? I have started to update last year's Y11 Individual Report and when I close the Word Template SIMS hangs and I have to end the task. My colleague gets the same error when she tries it on her PC. We both use Word 2016 and are on the Summer release. This crashing of SIMS occurs on any existing Individual Report we try and even if we create a new Individual Report, then open the Word Template and close it without making an edit. I checked Task Manager to see if Word was still open despite appearing to close normally and saw that it was not showing up as still running. I connected to our virtual SIMS Server via MSTC which has Word 2010. Opening any Individual Report's Word Template and closing it worked properly on the Server with Word 2010 but it would be impractical to carry out this work on the Server. -
HI all, recently found a developing issue with a Benq board (model RM6502K) the board seems to crash the PC no matter which PC it is. Originally thought it was a computer driver going funky however after swapping the PC to a donor laptop while i reimage the other. the laptop had seems to have done the same which ruled out to me that the computer side was the issue. Looking at the internet not much has been mentioned on this issue and some sources say update it however i can't seem to find the update file for usb and ideas would be greatly apprecated.

Hi there, We've just rolled out deployment of Surface Pros to our teaching staff, unfortunately there seems to be a nasty bug where the screen freezes & goes black when you attempt to use the pen. The issue is covered on this page - https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/all/surface-pro-7-crashes-when-using-a-pen-with-an/82ef28e5-5244-45a1-ba80-27549a545ee0?rtAction=1615808474829&page=1 in particular in the comment by Kelan: "This has been bothering us for months. Every time one of our users went to use their Surface Pen on their Surface Pro 7 in OneNote, their screen would flash black. At times, it would disconnect them from Miracast. Sometimes the entire device would freeze requiring a forced reset. Other times, Teams would crash in the background and black out requiring a forced quit via task manager. All of these issues were caused by using the pen. We have over 100 Surface devices in our environment (school), all with this problem. After weeks of digging and trial and error (with growing frustration amongst staff), I narrowed it down to a DWM.exe crash (as reported in event viewer): Faulting application path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dwm.exe Faulting module path: C:\WINDOWS\System32\KERNELBASE.dll As far as I can tell, this being caused by an incompatible Intel Iris Graphics driver that installed itself as part of the 2004 or 20H2 update." We've tried the fix outlined in Kelan's comment but it doesn't seem to have worked, has anyone else encountered this and managed to resolve it? We're trying the intel driver assistant now as that is also suggested in the thread but hopefully someone has come across this before Cheers -
Hi All, Well I managed to sink the Quadcopter again in the pursuit of the perfect shot lol. This day was one of those days where nothing was going right, I had already hit about 8 objects during my flight due to many factors, going too fast, not knowing the area, bad light but it all came to an end after hitting the water. Not much damage was caused during the crash, Only 2x props were damaged and after drying out the Quad I found one of the ESC's had given up, luckily that seems to be the only damaged caused. Pages I have been looking at have crashed a couple of times today. Once all Edugeek pages were blank. This was about 5:40 am. Then pages that had loaded successfully crashed with a database error message [No screenshot I am afraid] This was at around 6:00 this morning. Seems to be working well enough again now. -
Hi Guys, just wondered if anyone has come across this before. Im running DPM 2012r2, everything is set up and working, ie protection groups are set up and succesfully backing up my servers, no critical errors. The next step is to set up the notifications and this is where im having issues. So i go to options, i enter my SMTP details and enter an email address to send the test email too. Click send test email and get the following error Connection to the DPM service has been lost. Review the application event log for information about a possible service shutdown. Verify that the following services are not disabled: DPM DPM Replication Agent SQLAgent$mssqlserver MSSQL$mssqlserver Virtual Disk Service Volume Shadow Copy ID: 917 I have checked the services and they are all running. Ive looked in event viewer and found the following logs Faulting application name: msdpm.exe, version: 4.2.1205.0, time stamp: 0x5226e110 Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.3.9600.18202, time stamp: 0x569e7d02 Exception code: 0xc0000374 Fault offset: 0x00000000000f1b70 Faulting process id: 0x1438 Faulting application start time: 0x01d1900b7927e154 Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft System Center 2012 R2\DPM\DPM\bin\msdpm.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll Report Id: e82980d2-fbfe-11e5-941d-0024e8712b85 Faulting package full name: Faulting package-relative application ID: and also this one The description for Event ID 0 from source MSDPM cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event. The following information was included with the event: Service started successfully. the message resource is present but the message is not found in the string/message table To me, these messages are just telling me what i already know, that the application is crashing. I tried running the DPMSync command as this was suggested in another forum but this hasnt worked. Its only crashing when trying to set up notifications, everything else appears to be working fine Any help would be greatly appreciated -Vicky IT Tech at Sir Christopher Hatton Academy

Hi all, Hope everyone is well! I've got a right quirk that's come up with SIMS.net within our organisation... When reports are run and the excel previewer comes up showing the results of the report, Excel launches, shows the report for a split second then immediately closes itself resulting in me not being able to view report data This happens on several machines, using different accounts as well which leads me to think it's some setting within Excel or within SIMS I've tried the following things already, to no avail: Move the machines into an OU containing no Office policies Regenerated the report from scratch Enabled macros Reinstall Office Reinstall Windows Still baffled - I must be missing something obvious as it's only been happening for the last couple of weeks Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated Cheers!

Hi, We have some computers in our IT suite that keep crashing after macromedia MX 2004 7.0 has opened for a couple of seconds, I've had a look at the event viewer and it says: Log Name: Application Source: Application Error Date: 03/05/2012 10:51:49 Event ID: 1000 Task Category: (100) Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: ############ Description: Faulting application name: Flash.exe, version: 7.0.0.470, time stamp: 0x3f59a192 Faulting module name: Flash.exe, version: 7.0.0.470, time stamp: 0x3f59a192 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x0084067e Faulting process id: 0x2d0 Faulting application start time: 0x01cd2911594db1be Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Macromedia Studio MX 2004 1.0\Flash MX 2004\Flash.exe Faulting module path: C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Macromedia Studio MX 2004 1.0\Flash MX 2004\Flash.exe Report Id: 99a5e597-9505-11e1-ac21-0014c20d1d08 Event Xml: 1000 2 100 0x80000000000000 4394 Application ############ Flash.exe 7.0.0.470 3f59a192 Flash.exe 7.0.0.470 3f59a192 c0000005 0084067e 2d0 01cd2911594db1be C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Macromedia Studio MX 2004 1.0\Flash MX 2004\Flash.exe C:\Program Files\Macromedia\Macromedia Studio MX 2004 1.0\Flash MX 2004\Flash.exe 99a5e597-9505-11e1-ac21-0014c20d1d08 It's running on Windows 7 x32 any help would be great, thanks

Hi All, I have recently been meeting with some nutters on mountain bikes that like nothing less the hurling themselves off steep hills and jumps...so that's when the fun starts. This is the second flight after my rebuild of this frame, I have not quite got it as spot on as last time but after a few test flights it was ready for FPV....here are the results Best viewed full screen @720p

Hi everyone, Not sure if I have posted this in the correct area, so if I have then admin please move it! Basically, I go on my PC (Win 7) when I get home. Then usually around the time it prompts me to login, it crashes. I cannot move the mouse or have any response from the interface. I will turn it off, and restart it again. I will normally get this problem 2/3 more times within 20 minutes of the PC booting. After 4/5 reboots, the PC runs as normal! However 20 minutes of constant off and on again is a pain and sure I'm not doing the system any good! I have tried formatting and re-installing windows, however the problem persists. On top of this, I will have the occasional blue screen and sometimes when it crashes, my screen will go 'corrupt' as seen in the picture below.
