Thought I'd share this nugget of intel having spent the last few hours drilling down through the list of possible causes for some BSOD issues I was hitting. Scenario: - Gigabyte Z97 Sniper MB - Intel CPU - Gigabyte - System information viewer installed - Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) installed - Avast anti-virus installed Symptoms: - Intel XTU was not providing the CPU frequency and also reported it was being blocked from reading some information (but not crashing) - System information viewer was running when first installed (before any AV installs) but some weeks later (after no use) was BSOD crashing when run Cause: - Avast uses something called "hardware assisted virtualization" which obviously conflicts with these utilities Solution: Avast (2015) - Open Avast user interface (ie: double click the avast system tray icon) -> Settings -> Troubleshooting -> Un-tick/select "Enable hardware-assisted virtualization" option** ** There are warnings about doing this and the effect this change will have for things like sandbox so it may be something you choose to do when you need to do hardware monitoring tasks and then re-enable during "normal" usage. Result: - Intel XTU now reads and shows the CPU frequency in its monitor display - Gigabyte System Information Viewer no longer BSOD crashes Additional notes: I strongly suspect this issue extends to other hardware utilities for things like monitoring, overclocking, etc, and on numerous other motherboard types, etc... So, if you see any others that apply, please tag them on so others can find the issue and solution. Thanks Keywords (just to help others searching for this issue): anti virus, crash, blue screen, cpu, processor, monitoring, hardware

Hi Just thought I would post a solution to a problem I had with Steam on Windows 7 RC x64 (but I believe it can happen in vista as well) Everything was working in steam for weeks until I went to close it down last night, when I exited steam windows poped up with a message stating it was going to apply compatility settings to steam as it detected a problem (no cancel or way to stop it doing this) When I relaunched steam it poped up with a message telling me: Running Steam in Windows compatibility mode is not recommended. Please remove any Windows compatibility settings for all users under file properties for Steam.exe and restart Steam. Press 'Cancel' to premanently ignore this warning and continue. Reinstalling steam made no difference as well as trying to set compatibility settings under the shortcut. I eventually had a go of the application compatibility tool microsoft gives out to see that the settings saved on the machines local database and that triggering when I ran steam. I had a hunt through the registry and found the area where the keys are kept and deleted the key and my problems were gone. To fix the issue: Hit start->run->regedit Go to key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers Look for a entry with your path to steam.exe Delete that entry If you dont find it there try HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers Hope this helps if you get the issue. Please feel free to register and say hello here and if you have any other problems in general please try a new post, you never know. Also I now have a Flattr account: http://api.flattr.com/button/flattr-badge-large.png

Spotted this on LinkedIn... I will definitiely have to have a play... Sign In | LinkedIn Basically a way to fix things when Nagios finds a problem! The last line of the blog post sums it up perfectly...

Morning fellow geeklings, does anyone know of a reliable supplier where I might be able to find touchscreen replacements for Acer Chromebooks? Thanks.

Hi all, We experienced an issue due to the new windows update KB5006670. Symptoms were prints appearing as local downlevel documents and word/excel etc crashing when printing (funnily enough only to our Kyocera printers). mPisano over at https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/759880/kb5006670-network-printer-problems-again-this-month/page-5 posted a script and we can confirm it has sorted our issues so I thought I would make a post here in case anyone else has the same issues! You will need to get the good files from a machine in the system32 folder that hasn't got the KB5006670 update (or one that you've uninstalled it from) and host them in a centralised location, you must also add .good at the end as it won't work otherwise (speaking from experience)! We then added this script to a startup GPO, did a gpupdate /force and restarted. Hope this helps someone. @echo off REM 10.0.19041.1288 bad file comes from KB5006670 :_start copy "\\YourDomain.local\spoolerfix\win32spl.dll.good" C:\Windows\System32 /y copy "\\YourDomain.local\spoolerfix\spoolsv.exe.good" C:\Windows\System32 /y copy "\\YourDomain.local\spoolerfix\localspl.dll.good" C:\Windows\System32 /y :wmicVersion pathToBinary [variableToSaveTo] setlocal :_test_win32spl set "item1=C:\Windows\System32\win32spl.dll" set "item1=%item1:\=\\%" set "item2=C:\Windows\System32\win32spl.dll.good" set "item2=%item2:\=\\%" for /f "usebackq delims=" %%a in (`"WMIC DATAFILE WHERE name='%item1%' get Version /format:Textvaluelist"`) do ( for /f "delims=" %%# in ("%%a") do set "%%#") set existver=%version% set version= for /f "usebackq delims=" %%a in (`"WMIC DATAFILE WHERE name='%item2%' get Version /format:Textvaluelist"`) do ( for /f "delims=" %%# in ("%%a") do set "%%#") set goodver=%version% set version= echo %existver% echo %goodver% IF %goodver%==%existver% echo "Files are same version" && goto _test_localspl IF "%existver%"=="10.0.19041.1288" echo "Files are bad version" && goto _fix_win32spl IF NOT %goodver%==%existver% echo "Files are different version" && goto _test_localspl :_test_localspl set "item1=C:\Windows\System32\localspl.dll" set "item1=%item1:\=\\%" set "item2=C:\Windows\System32\localspl.dll.good" set "item2=%item2:\=\\%" for /f "usebackq delims=" %%a in (`"WMIC DATAFILE WHERE name='%item1%' get Version /format:Textvaluelist"`) do ( for /f "delims=" %%# in ("%%a") do set "%%#") set existver=%version% set version= for /f "usebackq delims=" %%a in (`"WMIC DATAFILE WHERE name='%item2%' get Version /format:Textvaluelist"`) do ( for /f "delims=" %%# in ("%%a") do set "%%#") set goodver=%version% set version= echo %existver% echo %goodver% IF %goodver%==%existver% echo "Files are same version" && goto _test_spoolsv IF "%existver%"=="10.0.19041.1288" echo "Files are bad version" && goto _fix_localspl IF NOT %goodver%==%existver% echo "Files are different version" && goto _test_spoolsv :_test_spoolsv set "item1=C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe" set "item1=%item1:\=\\%" set "item2=C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe.good" set "item2=%item2:\=\\%" for /f "usebackq delims=" %%a in (`"WMIC DATAFILE WHERE name='%item1%' get Version /format:Textvaluelist"`) do ( for /f "delims=" %%# in ("%%a") do set "%%#") set existver=%version% set version= for /f "usebackq delims=" %%a in (`"WMIC DATAFILE WHERE name='%item2%' get Version /format:Textvaluelist"`) do ( for /f "delims=" %%# in ("%%a") do set "%%#") set goodver=%version% set version= echo %existver% echo %goodver% IF %goodver%==%existver% echo "Files are same version" && goto _end IF "%existver%"=="10.0.19041.1288" echo "Files are bad version" && goto _fix_spoolsv IF NOT %goodver%==%existver% echo "Files are different version" && goto _end goto _end :_fix_win32spl net stop spooler timeout /t 3 /nobreak Takeown /A /F C:\Windows\System32\win32spl.dll icacls "C:\Windows\System32\win32spl.dll" /grant builtin\administrators:F icacls "C:\Windows\System32\win32spl.dll" /grant SYSTEM:F ren C:\Windows\System32\win32spl.dll win32spl-%existver%.dll copy C:\Windows\System32\win32spl.dll.good C:\Windows\System32\win32spl.dll /Y goto _test_localspl :_fix_localspl net stop spooler timeout /t 3 /nobreak Takeown /A /F C:\Windows\System32\localspl.dll icacls "C:\Windows\System32\localspl.dll" /grant builtin\administrators:F icacls "C:\Windows\System32\localspl.dll" /grant SYSTEM:F ren C:\Windows\System32\localspl.dll localspl-%existver%.dll copy C:\Windows\System32\localspl.dll.good C:\Windows\System32\localspl.dll /Y goto _test_spoolsv :_fix_spoolsv net stop spooler timeout /t 3 /nobreak Takeown /A /F C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe icacls "C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe" /grant builtin\administrators:F icacls "C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe" /grant SYSTEM:F ren C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe spoolsv-%existver%.exe copy C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe.good C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe /Y goto _end :_end net start spooler exit

Good morning everybody, Where can I find a service manual/disassembly guide for a 300 Series Pro smart board? On Friday while preparing to replace a classroom board in which the flame stopped functioning with a board taken from a classroom that's been repurposed, I accidentally broke a loose plug which then proceeded to fall inside the board. The plug is for a what seems like a power cable that runs from the side of the board (behind the sound panel) to the top of the board (behind the flame), it's not the USB cable. My job on Monday is to disassemble that section of the board, retrieve the part in hopes of repairing so the board can be used on the first day of school. In the picture enclosed of a similar board I found online, I circled in red and white the two areas where the cable plugs into with the red circle being the area where the plug receptacle broke. Thank you in advance! PS - Crossposted to Hardware and Promethean boards. Please advise if I'm violating any code of conduct, thank you.

Hello Guys, As some of you may be aware, but on CC4.3 and CC4.5 there was a problem with Windows 7 builds where the build client would start searching for updates, but then timeout and fail. RM have got to the bottom of this and have released a fix which is currently in field trial. I myself for our school have installed the field trial, and I can confirm that mine (CC4.5 network) and another friend (CC4.3 Network) are no longer having any WSUS problems. Just want to say a massive thank you to RM, it has made my builds allot more easier and the computers are ready to use fully when they have being built. What the update does, it creates a scheduled task to run on the CC4 First Server to cleanup the WSUS database, but also the CC4 database so it doesn't take so long to search for updates no more. As well as this, I have also freed up about 24GB of disk space from the WSUS folder with unused updates. For those of you wondering what update I am talking about, please see: DWN5037756 Good job RM! James
