Hi all, I have been passed over an Access database that needs some modifications. It is a relatively simple database, and most of the modifications I have done. However, I need to now dump some of the data out into a word document, which I can partially do, however I don't have all the code required. I was hoping there might be some Access gurus on here that might be able to lend a hand / point me in the right direction I am aiming to: The database stored 'bookings' and has multiple tables with lookup data that all are matched in the bookings table. Ie. Students table, Tutors table, Rooms table and subjects table. I need to present all the bookings for a particular tutor or student in a grid 'timetable' view. I have created the timetable template in Word and I have inserted bookmarks in each cell. I currently have some VBA code that will dump a particular field into a particular bookmark area The Issue: There are three parts that I need some assistance with. 1. I need to be able to select a tutor's name (from a listbox preferably) and it only give me the bookings for that tutor. I can try and pull data from a query, however as it stands i've only managed to get it to prompt me for manual input of a name rather than look at a listbox and set that name as the criteria. 2. Only IDs are stored in the bookings table, the data I want to pull out is the actual friendly names, which are stored in the seperate tables. 3. I need to input the bookings into the correct cell in the table based on the timeslot that is selected. Ie. If the booking is put against timeslot: "Monday A Session 1", then it needs to go into cell with bookmark 'mon1_session1_subjectname'. I can do a lost of if else statements, but it's how do I get all the data together to take from? The database is attached if you wish to have a look: LFC LSA_Lauren Monks.zip At the moment I have none of the above functionality set up, and a few bits are broken (work in progress), but more so that you can have a better understanding of the database. Thanks in advance for any assistance! I haven't done any Access work for a few years, and I'm a bit rusty!

Hi all, Have a query with regards to printer security permissions on our 2003 domain... I have a printer that I need to deny access to. Basically kids printing to it from other areas of the school (should only be the computers in that room that can print to it). This is what I've done: added computer accounts that shouldn't print to it to a security group. Added that security group to the printer, with a deny 'print' tick box. However, I was still able to add the printer and print to it from one of those PCs! Where am I going wrong? Thanks!

Hi, I'm hoping one of the smoothwall experts out there can help with a small problem we have. We just upgraded our internet access and previously had our email server straddling both the internal and external networks - two NICs one internal and one external. Our cisco router was then directly connected to our Smoothwall box and the external NIC of our email server, allowing email webclient access both internally and externally. I want to move our email server behind our Smoothwall box and just open up the necessary firewall ports on Smoothwall to allow external access to email. I've configured an external alias on Smoothwall, using a 2nd static ip from the range allocated, then set up port forwarding to forward http and https traffic onto our mail server's internal ip. Now when I try to access the mail server using the alias ip from outside of the network I get a 404 Not found. Looking at the access logs on the mail server, the external traffic is not getting through, and looking at the realtime firewall logs on the Smoothwall box I can see why - entries from my external ip (with strange port numbers - e.g. 31225) are being blocked, however the destination ip is the internal ip of our mail server and the port is correct (443). My question, finally, is why would an http request be hitting smoothwall with a strange port number, rather than 443 as one would expect, and why would the logs show the destination as the internal ip of our mail server, since the firewall rule is not being matched - hence the block. I'm sure I'm missing something obvious here - any help gratefully received.

Morning all! We are experiencing some issues with shared calendars in Exchange, in that all members of staff are able to view and edit any other staff member's Outlook calendar. It seems that setting permissions for individual users or keeping the standard 'Default: None, Anonymous: None' doesn't seem to have any effect! We are using Exchange 2003 on Server 2003 and users have Windows XP Pro with Outlook 2003. I've had a look at the security permissions on the Mailbox Store in Exchange System Manager and noticed that there are two entries which might have an effect; Domain Admins and Enterprise Admins. The profiles of staff users are not members of either group, however the Staff Organisational Unit folder does have 'Domain Admins' and 'Enterprise Admins' entries under the security tab, both of which have full access rights. Is this a possible reason as to why staff can freely edit other staff user's calendars without the need for permissions? Am I right in thinking if I remove 'Domain Admins' and 'Enterprise Admins' from the staff 'OU' folder, this shouldn't have an effect on staff accessing their e-mails? Any suggestions are hugely appreciated!

Setting up an open access wireless network for students
Bruce123 posted a topic in Wireless Networks
We are looking a providing an open access wireless network to enable our learners to bring in their own laptops / PDAs and connect to the Internet using our Internet connection. It is something that they have been asking for, and would also help balance the demand with the availability of our wireless laptops. I wondered whether anyone already has facility in your school/College and if so, how it was achieved? Did you allow the laptops direct access to the Internet (via NAT routing) or did you use the Web proxy auto discovery protocol? I would prefere the first option as it removes the complexities of having to get the "proxy server : port" into their browsers, and potential issues if this configuration remains when they try to access the Internet using their own connection at home. Or should either of these be serious concerns? The problem with the former is that on our network the clients have always accessed the Internet using IE with a proxy server (ISA 2006) and have not needed or been granted direct access to the Internet (i.e. via NAT). So we would have to set this up for these laptops and enable resolutuion of DNS external addresses, which also was not required previously (done on by the proxy server). How have you dealt with authentication? My thoughts are to leave the wireless network open and and have the students logon to a webpage to gain access to the Internet (802.1X and webpage)? How have you done this? We have Wireless Smart Switches - WFS709TP for central managment of our wireless network, so setting up an additional SSID assigned to a new VLAN should be easy enough, and we can point this to a 802.1X server for authentication. How have you done this? Have you permitted users connecting in this way access to other services on your network (such as printing and a full Terminal Service connection)? Have you restricted access for this clients at layer 2/3, and if so how have you done this? Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks, Bruce. Leeds, UK.- 2 replies

I thought I'd open this problem up to hopefully get some different perspectives. The problem is as follows: As a school we support our primary cluster in their ICT and for a significant period of time now they have had to authenticate against our GFL proxy to gain internet access. It has always been a problem to the teachers in the primary's to try and get young children to remember the log on details, and the initial concept of authenticating was to track users browsing habits. This never materialised though and is now used for filtering. I'm looking for ideas really how I can get rid of the secondary authentication for internet access. The primary schools log on to the computers within school, all have Windows Server 2003 DC. The secondary authentication then ties into the GFL Smoothwall filtering and I do not think that an ISA server in each school is a viable option as they would then require local filtering also which is unpractical. Google throws up interesting options such as ADFS but haven't really found any references to using it in a situation such as this. Just wanted to get the opinion of others to see if they've encountered this issue and/or solved it. I appreciate any replies.

Afternoon all Looks the snow is settling here again and it's not even been 2 weeks since the last lot , have too much to do for it to snow lol Ok, I'm looking to create a Knowledge base, I thought perhaps I could try Microsoft Access, but unfortunately I do not know it well enough - at least not the point of scripting and creating form linkings etc. Does anyone have any suggestions? Perhaps you have one, or know what I could try? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Daz

I have created a database for cartridge stock at my school, (its a hot topic here at the moment with a lot of money being spent on printing) but I am having a few issues with Access queries. I have currently got a query which shows the cartridges in stock and how many eg Cartridge Stock --------- ------ 339 7 344 5 Etc I also have a table which shows the required cartridges (some of which wont show up on the stock list becuase the query only counts items in stock). Is there a way of combining the tables to show 0 stock on some cartridges without using VBA? Apologies if its not clear :s

Hi guys, So after a lot of time spent wrestling with RADIUS at one of my schools we finally have a fairly stable NPS server setup on a win2008r2 box using Aruba Wireless points. There's just ONE thing that's an issue at the moment: If the device (in this example a netbook) goes to sleep/hibernates and tries to connect on waking it gives the messages "Cannot connect to .....". If I leave it for 5 minutes or so and then try to reconnect it's fine. Currently using PEAP/MSCHAPv2. Connection is stable initially and have tested roaming round the school and only get a few drops when pinging a server, mobile devices, iPads etc. all seem to be ok but it's just this 'immediate reconnection' issue that's the problem. Logs in system32\logfiles\ are inconclusive and event viewer doesn't point to anything. Any ideas? EDIT: It appears the problem is a little bigger than previously thought. My clients that have been connected for well over an hour have disconnected and need that few minutes of 'cooling off' before re-establishing connection! Restarting the NPS service doesn't seem to have any affect. Very confusing! Cheers! Chris.

I'm back for more Access help - hopefully someone out there will answer. I have a database which contains a list of hotel guests and the gifts they have claimed over a certain amount of time. I now want to print a report on the 28th of each month to see what each member has claimed in that month - for example Marth 29th - April 28th and so on. I have designed the report for it to print but am having trouble with the query that calculates this information. I've tried putting this: Between Date() And DateAdd("m",-1,Date()) into the query criteria but cannot get it to show the results. Am I missing something? There should be at least one guest who has claimed gifts in the past month. Any help appreciated, Gareth

Hi, I've got a Macro assigned to a button on a form which is a query output. When the user clicks on the button it reads a value from a field and subtracts 150. It puts the new value back into that field. I have done this with a Macro The Macro looks like this: GoToControl Points Balance SetValue [Forms]![frm_qry_choose_gift]![Point Balance], [Forms]![frm_qry_choose_gift]![Point Balance]-150 I'm looking to get some sort of conditional rule in there which reads the users points value and if they have less than 150 runs another Macro (or stops this Macro) that tells them they cannot continue. Can anyone offer advice getting the conditional rule in there? I could use code but for this scenario it has to be a macro. The pseudocode I want to follow is: runMacro If button1 is clicked then read guest_points if guest_points is less than 150 then run errormessageMacro else continue running the subtraction and field update to remove 150 points. Any help is appreciated, Many thanks Gareth

Evening all, I've just started at a new school so I'm trying to pick up old problems that I know nothing about, which is proving... well, exhausting. It seems the school used to run an Access database called TEAM released by Education Software Ltd. in Warwick. It's fairly amateurish stuff of the sort often peddled to schools and thankfully we don't use it anymore (although we have Serco instead now...) but a teacher wants access to it for historical data. When I open the file (Team_2612.mdb) it complains about macros and security, but clicking through all that, as soon as I try and do anything in the database it crops up with "ODBC--connection to 'TEAM' failed". Oddly enough an older version of this file with outdated data has no such issues, so the Office installation would seem to be fine, and it's something specifically within this file. As far as I can guess, then, it's something to do with linked tables and such like. Is there anywhere I can find out what tables are linked, where it's trying to use the ODBC to get to etc? I don't suppose that anyone has actually had dealings with this software and can at least sympathise with me? I'll fire off an e-mail to the company who made it now but to be honest, I have more faith in edugeek getting me an answer than the company who made it. Thanks in advance... I may disappear soon as my eyes hurt from staring at Access now. Can't remember the last time I saw it used outside of a GCSE lesson, bleurgh indeed!

Hi, I've got a big folder with lots of subfolders that contain files with a specfic name e.g. PL0123_A, these names are also stored inside a access database. I need to make a script that will scan for all .dwg files in a directory recursively. Then i need to look up each files name in the Access database see what the description is for that file and append it to the filename by renaming. Does anyone have any advice on whats the best language to do it in? And how i would do it easily...some code snippets would be nice Thanks Jack

Our curriculum year changes at the end of May, so the new timetable is currently being built. How can I restrict access to the new timetable? Staff are looking ahead to find out what their classes are, but the head wants it locked down until finalised. Our school portal is also picking up the info as it has a heartbeat with SIMS and so parents can browse ahead too... Is there any way of locking down access to the new timetable whilst maintaining access to the current one?

Hi All, We've been using Impero at our school for quite a few years now, and it's been great, but it's randomly developed an issue over the last couple of days... For no reason at all, I can no longer open the Impero Console on ANY PC, or the Impero server. When trying to open the console, I get a "You are not permitted to run Impero Console" message. I've tried this using various user accounts, all of which have full permission to use the console. Impero is also blocking some students and staff from printing, due to them having no printer credits, however we've never used Impero for printer credit management, and use PaperCut instead. Has anyone else had any issues like this? Thanks

Hi all, I'm attempting to create a form in a database I'm designing that can be used to sort/filter and select records (and open said record in a new form) I have done this before, where it works fine, but i'm doing the same way this time and can't get it to work unfortunately. I've attached the database in question (using sample data atm) if anybody has a second to have a quick look? In summary, I have inserted a listbox into NavigationForm, and set the data to three fields from the External table. I have set the double click event to: Private Sub List6_DblClick(Cancel As Integer) DoCmd.OpenForm "ExternalForm", , , "ApplicationID = " & Me! [List6] End Sub On run, it prompts for an ApplicationID (although it should get this from the listbox. Not sure why it won't work External Database.zip

Hi, I have promised to create an online order form for our new finance office as until now we have always had to complete forms to begin processing orders. The problem is, I offered without stopping to think what the best way to proceed would be. I thought "between access, Office 365 and our VLE I'll be able to rustle up something", except I've got to the point now where they've included it into next year's academic guide book making it policy (despite me even giving them a pilot or demo; which just gives you an idea of the drag-you-through-a-hedge-backwards-without-thinking-or-planning philosophy in the school). So, here I am; with 3 weeks to rustle up a solution and I'm not sure about the best way to proceed. Ideally I'd like to combine it with Office 365 in some way, as that already has usernames and account I can use for access; it also has integration with Excel, SharePoint and PowerApps; but I might be biting off more than I can chew with this approach. Would a simple set of Access tables and forms be the best way to do this still? I know that wouldn't take too long to develop, but it does seem a bit 2006.... Any idea or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey guys, I really need the Edugeek braintrust. There's a bit of background to this, so bear with: I've been asked to investigate updating our "Performance Other Than Academic" recording system. We have 7 categories of behaviour for our students and they're rated each lesson, on each category from 1-4. Over the years I've built a massively complex Macro-enabled spreadsheet and housed it on a share. The kids carry around paper copies and at the end of the day a TA opens the spreadsheet for each tutor group and fills in the scores, the lessons etc. Problem 1: We use DFS shares, which are replicating between three sites, so Shared Spreadsheets break down VERY quickly and stop working/ lock themselves etc. Problem 2: The kids destroy their paper copies, so the poor TA has to reassemble the scores from fragments of torn paper. (Sometimes they destroy other kids POTAs.) The Solution: An Access Web App database - built on Sharepoint and so accessible by all staff at all times. Consisting of: Student Information - including teaching group A POTA table which creates a new record consisting of: Date, Teaching Group, Student, Lesson, Score 1, Score 2, Score 3 etc. The teacher logs into Sharepoint, chooses the teaching group, enters the lesson, picks the student, enters scores - done, saved. The new problem: We move students between teaching groups because the relationships the students have fluctuate because of the extreme behaviours we encounter. So you go into the Student Information and update their teaching group, no problem. HOWEVER: The POTA table does not update the Teaching Group for past records. I've been trying to construct a Data Macro query where: For every record where the student ID matches, but the teaching group does NOT match, update the teaching group field, based on the student information. But it seems like Access Web App Data Macros CANNOT reference information in other tables, only within the one table. So, does anyone have a clever solution to automatically go through the historical records and update the teaching group field, so that when I look back over a teaching group's data, I can collate it all with one query? Many thanks, J

We are getting some agency staff in to cover a couple of people who are off sick in the IT department. Never really had a need for this before, and previous managers never really looked into this. Whats the best way to go about giving them access to the system. I have no qualms about giving them their own logins so they can access applications and do day to day stuff, but we also access servers with the administrator account and domain password. Do i duplicate the admin account and give them that if they need access, do i avoid them doing any admin work all together, or do i draw up an agreement with regards to use of our network and passwords?

I have to write part of an Access database as a demonstration to the kids in my a-level class. Most of it is done but there are gaps in my knowledge (yes a humble teacher!!) and so I wonder if anyone out there can help. This is what happens.... 1. Query is run. It is a parameter query that asks the user for their membership card number and then their password. There is no validation here as it is not needed in the development 2. User enters their details and up pops up a form. This form displays the following (based on the criteria) - Guest Name, Amount of Points. On the form is 6 buttons. The Guest clicks on of them to choose their gift. If they have enough points they can claim the gift. (I haven't done that validation yet). 3. I have created a Macro that calculates their new points total after that gift is taken off. I've avoided using code so far as it makes it easier for the pupils. What I now want to happen is (after pressing the button) is a report to print a voucher detailing the date and gift. This bit is easy - that is to create a general report and have the macro print it. However, what I also want to do is transfer some of the fields from the query form onto the report on the fly so that it creates individual vouchers for individual guests. I'm sure it is easy - but I'm blank. As soon as someone tells me how to do it I know I am going to swear and say several rude words as I amaze at how dull I have been. ANy help appreciated, Gareth

Anyone aware of ways that access can be limited on certain applications on Server 2008? I need my technicians to be able to access Active Directory and various other things on the servers like event logs, but there are some things I do not want them accessing like Group Policy, Exchange Management, Sophos Console. I know the obvious thing to do is to tell them not to use the applications but I don't suppose anyone is aware whether you can password applications like this?

[ms office - 2010] tables missing in Access 2010 databases
torytechie posted a topic in Office Software
One of our staff users has an old access database, created in Access 2003. However when we open the .mdb file in MS access 2010, some of the tables are missing. We then open the database in Access 2003 on another machine and it opens and views fine. I have read that there maybe compataility issues with access 2003/2007, but I cannot find any fixes for access 2010. Does anybody have any ideas wy this is happening or how it can be fixed? -
Our primary head has made a very reasonable request - I know, I know! We have quite a few staff with children at the school. She wants to record pastoral notes against some pupils but restrict access. Currently, all staff (teacher role) can see all behaviour notes. If I we were able to restrict access in the same way as attached documents can be restricted (i.e. restrict viewing to SLT roles) then I think I could make it work. But I expect I'd need to check all the reports available to avoid circumventing the UI block? Any one had to deal with this or have any suggestions, or should I look at 3rd party solutions - not an entirely desirable option...
