A bit of a daft question, but I need some help! We currently have an IP address range with a subnet mask of 255.255.252.0, which due to the popularity of BYOD, is about to run out. We've acquired a new IP address range from our Local Authority, where the subnet mask is 255.255.224.0 ... I've added the new range to DHCP, but how exactly do I allow devices to communicate between the two subnet masks? I've had a quick search on Google, but I cannot find anything relating to this. Can anyone help?

Morning all! Just a quick question regarding Cubase and saved composition files ... I've just had a call from our Music Department asking for an increase in disk space for a couple of students. Not a particularly strange request, however some of these students are using between 300-1000Mb each! It look as though the space is taken up by several different compositions and within each composition are several folders for drums, bass etc ... Has anyone else experienced such high disk space usage with Cubase? If this continues with the amount of Music students we have, we're going to have to look at increasing our file server space, as well as our offsite backup space too. Do you have another method of running Cubase e.g. local storage with local backups? If you're running it over a network with home folders, how much space is your Music Department taking up? Cheers!

Cheers! This did the trick ... I copied the SIMS.ini from the working laptop to the laptop that did not work; even though the installer cannot validate the DB paths, if you continue and attempt to run Discover afterwards, it works! lol
-
I just tried this again on another laptop and now the installer states that it cannot find the paths ... Urgh!
-
Just reinstalled Discover on the laptop and it now works! The only thing I did differently was 'validate' the Discover & SIMS DB paths ...
-
It shouldn't need a restart; I went through the SIMS Discover install process on our SIMS server yesterday afternoon and once installed, I was able to log into the Discover Configuration Utility (and Discover thereafter) with my usual SIMS username and password upon completion. However, I've just installed the Discover client on a laptop to test and I'm unable to log onto either Discover or the config utility with my details! It pops up with "Unknown error occurred during logon" ... So it works on the server, but not on a laptop/workstation! Awesome!

At present we are looking into offering Sixth Form students a BYOD service, which would allow them access to our wireless network (filtered), network printers and access to their 'My Documents' stored on the curriculum file server. However, what would be the best way to allow secure access to their 'My Documents' without implementing potentially oppressive policies that could lock down their personal laptop? Would an RDS server be the best way forward? Viglen offers a package that allows students to access documents and programs from home via an RDS server, which would tie in nicely with our Viglen ClassLink environment. I'm thinking that perhaps we could implement this, restrict it to Sixth Formers only, and then allow them to access the server whilst onsite. It would also offer students access to programs such as Office, which would circumvent the need for them to buy additional software. If an RDS server is the best way forward, what sort of server spec would you recommend for 250 students? At present we have 150 Sixth Form students, but this could increase to 200 in 1-2 years time. Also, I believe I'll need RDS licenses for each student, but how does Microsoft Office licenses work under RDS? Our current agreement is via EES, which is priced by the amount of part/full time members of staff at your school ... So technically this should be free, but I have a feeling it probably isn't!

Yeah, with the numbers involved, I think a MacMini server is the way forward in terms of locking them down ... Out of interest, are there any settings on the iPad that the Profile Manager in Lion cannot lock down? Could students mess around with browser homepage/proxy settings etc?

Afternoon all! We're on the brink of ordering several (read: 50!) iPad 2 devices for students to use in various different departments. I have to admit I'm not particularly keen on the idea; I would have liked to have trialed a smaller number (4-5) first, as I think they will be difficult to manage, but the school wants to buy in bulk whilst prices are low ... One of my main concerns is saving files and how to access network stores in order to use the files elsewhere. For example, what if a student takes photos/videos during a lesson and then wants to access those files elsewhere, perhaps on another iPad or networked computer ... I see that there are Apps that will allow you to connect to a Windows network store, a generic folder, but I'm guessing you cannot have it pointing to home folders with username and passwords ... ? I was also thinking about whether it would be possible to have some web-based storage for each individual student, provided either by Apple or maybe ourselves? I'm thinking this method is going to be expensive and is another set of username and passwords that students have to remember! Could you upload files to Google Docs from the iPad (something I haven't tried), and then access them on another iPad/networked PC? Has anyone else solved this problem with their iPads/network, or do you solely use your iPads for Internet and Apps etc? If we can't find a solution, it could be a deal breaker ... Any suggestions are much appreciated! Cheers!

[sims] SOLUS 3 - Unable to Get an IP Address For This Agent ... ?
MyBrainHurts replied to MyBrainHurts's topic in MIS Systems
No luck with Sophos ... Meh! -
Afternoon all! I've been experiencing some issues with rolling out the SOLUS 3 agent to workstations, in that out of 150 computers, the client has only installed itself on 6! The original error message we received was along the lines of 'Unable to get an IPv4 address for this agent', however the latest SOLUS 3 update was supposed to fix this. It has, to a degree, but now we're receiving the error message 'Unable to get an IP address for this agent' Has anyone else seen similar? So far I've tried installing it on computers in groups of 2, 10, and 50 to see if large deployment sizes were an issue. I've tried switching off Windows Firewall, just in case this was interfering with the install process. I've also tried installing to computers with dynamic and static IP addresses, but the same message appears. I have also pinged the name of a computer from the SIMS server and it's returning with the correct IP address of the machine. It's really odd ... I have a few test computers beside me, all running XP SP3 and fully updated, with the latest version of SIMS and Windows Firewall switched off. Yet still the SOLUS 3 deployment environment will not roll the update out to these computers due to the above error message. Just a random thought whilst typing this ... Sophos Anti-Virus wouldn't prevent the install, would it? Might just give that a try Cheers! Chris

Shared Calendars - Permissions Not Working!
MyBrainHurts replied to MyBrainHurts's topic in Enterprise Software
Thanks for the suggestions so far Sukh, if I check the mailbox rights permissions on a staff member's profile, there are a couple of entries that might be allowing them access to other user's calendars; Domain Admins (Full Rights) and Enterprise Admins (Full Rights). I cannot remove these permissions, as they are inherited. I am right in thinking that these permissions are inherited from the mailbox store in Exchange System Manager and that I should be able to remove these with little effect? Users are able to view shared calendars by simply clicking on 'open a shared calendar' and typing in the name of the desired staff member - The user can then add entries and delete existing entries in this calendar! There has to be some sort of administrator privilege that is filtering down to all users ... Would the 'Domain Admins' entry in the mailbox store, which filters to all users in AD, cause this? Just double checking! -
Morning all! We are experiencing some issues with shared calendars in Exchange, in that all members of staff are able to view and edit any other staff member's Outlook calendar. It seems that setting permissions for individual users or keeping the standard 'Default: None, Anonymous: None' doesn't seem to have any effect! We are using Exchange 2003 on Server 2003 and users have Windows XP Pro with Outlook 2003. I've had a look at the security permissions on the Mailbox Store in Exchange System Manager and noticed that there are two entries which might have an effect; Domain Admins and Enterprise Admins. The profiles of staff users are not members of either group, however the Staff Organisational Unit folder does have 'Domain Admins' and 'Enterprise Admins' entries under the security tab, both of which have full access rights. Is this a possible reason as to why staff can freely edit other staff user's calendars without the need for permissions? Am I right in thinking if I remove 'Domain Admins' and 'Enterprise Admins' from the staff 'OU' folder, this shouldn't have an effect on staff accessing their e-mails? Any suggestions are hugely appreciated!
