Our users have the following formats set for their UPN & Primary SMTP (on prem hybrid to exchange online) UPN: PrimarySMTP: So both of these are different, which I believe is against the best practice? For some applications we see that Microsoft SSO can easily break where the application only has the PrimarySMTP address, and the users Microsoft account is logged in with the UPN. For example, Senso V2 we imported some users using their PrimarySMTP address, and SSO doesn't work. If we use their UPN, it does work. Are there any major caveats to making these both the same? Maybe making the old UPN an alias? I understand that the UPN is used to actually log in to Microsoft 365, so that would need to be communicated to users. Suppose I can also just import the UPN address instead which would enable SSO to function.

Hi, As part of my home network project I am looking to setup Exchange at home using SBS 2011 on a separate AD domain which will host (ideally) all of the mailboxes for my domain. I own the rights for my domain name, and have it hosted with NameCheap. However, my IP at home is Dynamic and hosted with Virgin Media. I have heard about using Smart Hosts and various other ways of getting this to work with DDNS etc, but I haven't managed to get it to work. Is anyone able to help me with setting this up? My ideal goal is to have SBS running Exchange to host emails, with my own domain and for me to be able to send emails to other people (presumably via a Smart Host) with no fuss. I have all the ports SBS requires opened on the firewall, so it's not a port block error. Virgin Media doesn't block port 25 also, so no issue there. Hope you can help? Whistler.

Hi, I am looking for a script to check an email account and extract all attachments to a network share? Has anyone please by any chance already got or seen anything like this? My initial searches led me to the "Get-IMAP" command and then... Get-IMAP -AttachmentDirectory "C:\temp\Attachments" -User $user -Password $password -Mailbox INBOX -Server $server -view $msgId But im hoping not to have to re-invent the wheel if someone already does this! Thanks in advance

We are running exchange 2013 in hybrid but still have some on-prem mailboxes. Recently added a new exchange 2019 server into the environment to migrate everything to so we can eliminate the 2013 server. Got it set up and tried migrating the first mailbox. It was a large mailbox of about 50GB. About 20 hours into the move, I got a confirmation email saying "The migration process failed to complete because it has encountered errors. You can fix these errors, and try to complete the migration again. Or you can complete the migration and select the option to ignore any errors associated with the migration." However, despite getting this, I could still see that the migration was still going using Get-MigrationUserStatistics command in the management shell. After about 3 days, I see from the same log that the migration is complete (see log entries below), but in the ECP it is still saying status as "Completed with errors" and saying "Failed mailboxes: 1" In the log entries from the management shell I can see things like "Copying messages is complete" and "Mailbox store finalization is complete" and "Mailbox contents verification complete." There is an option to complete the migration batch, but I am just nervous since it still says there were errors. Is it safe to complete the batch now or are there other things I should be checking first to make sure this is successful? Here's an except of the end of the log using Get-MigrationUserStatistics: 12/29/2019 4:18:49 AM [EXCHANGE19] Stage: CopyingMessages. Been doing this via a Powershell script that takes the info from a csv but that method is now deprecated and, apparently, MSGraph should be used. Which would be fine if it was documented, but the best I could find was https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/how-to-bulk-upload-using-graph-sdk-powershell/f6be91a8-2206-4fa2-b0d9-e678d2ca5aaa which both threw "This is experimental" warnings and then the same error that the OP got. I'm guessing most have AD synced, but is anyone using a script/csv method, and how did you get it to work? I can find ways to add users but not set passwords, which we need for KS2.

We have an on-premises Exchange server (2019) which relays messages from on-premises clients (scanners, servers, etc.) and most of our user mailboxesare in Exchange Online. Over the past few days, some (but not all) messages relayed from them on-premises server to exchange online get delayed for up to nearly 2 hours. You can tell from the timestamps in the headers of the messages. As an example, this morning, I ran the Get-Queue command on my on-premises server. This showed 32 messages in the queue to my exchange online domain (myorg.mail.onmicrosoft.com). Some of the messages had been delayed over an hour. When I ran Get-Queue -Identity "8137" nearly all the messages showed as being in "ready" status.

Nothing in queue was being delivered. I then ran Retry-Queue -Identity "8137" and within about a minute all the messages were delivered. As I noted, this has happened a few days in a row now and not sure why. I've rebooted the server and it still persists, sometimes. Can anyone suggest next steps to investigate why this is happening?

Hi all I've set up a room calendar for the heads meeting room such that a user can create an appointment and it will be sent to a delegate for acceptance or denial. This works, but what it doesn't do, which I really would like, is to send the creator of the appointment a confirmation as to whether it's been accepted or denied. They receive an email telling them that it's been received, but not what's happened with it after that. Is there a way to enable that functionality in Exchange 2016? Olly

Hi All, We have an issue with our Smoothwall UTM - We recently set up a VLAN for our guest wireless using the DHCP of the Smoothwall box - It works fine, except when you try to access internal resources (The school website, our exchange server etc) I tried setting up some exceptions but nothing seemed to work. Any ideas anyone? Something obvious I'm missing?

I currently have exchange 2007 and o365 setup. I found out that enabling email for the pupils in o365 is a disaster as it crashes without the mailbox first being migrated. I was thinking of upgrading my local exchange2007 to 2010 and enabling hybrid. Will this allow pupils to access their email through o365 without me having to migrate the mailbox immediately? Is it hard to do this retrospectively? Will I still have to setup a real (not self signed cert) for the OWA?

Hi,During February half-term 2014 we changed the MX records associated with xxxxxxxxx.xxxxx.sch.uk to be those of gmail in order to bring the domain fully under the control of our Gapps primary domain. Our Bursar has continued to keep an eye on the LA exchange mailbox and noticed an email that didn't go into our gmail mailbox but went to the LA exchange mailbox. Could anyone shed any light on why this might have happened? Is it a case of studying the message headers?

Hi, I am trying to delete all "Sent Items" in one users mailbox from the 1st one received until 31/08/2014 I am running the following command and then checking the log file that is created. From what I can see it looks as if the Search-Query is looking in all locations and the log file backs this up. Is there anyway I can delete just the content that exists in the users "Sent Items" for a specific date range. I believe that -SearchQuery "Received:<$('31.08.2014')" needs some work but I cannot locate any info on being able to specify a folder with in the mailbox to search. Search-Mailbox -Identity USERNAME -TargetMailbox Administrator -TargetFolder "Report_OUTPUT" -SearchQuery "Received:<$('31.08.2014')" -LogOnly -LogLevel Full Search-Mailbox -Identity USERNAME -TargetMailbox Administrator -TargetFolder "REPORT_OUTPUT" -SearchQuery "Sent:> $('2012-09-28') and Sent:< $('2014-08-31')" -LogOnly -LogLevel Full

We have two cover supervisors who need to both receive the cover work (and stuff) for the day by email. In Zimbra, I was able to give them both an alias of cover@... and they both received the mail. Problem - Exchange is less than happy with this setup and it doesn't allow it. The solution is obviously to have a shared mailbox which they both have access to. The question is which type do I use? None of the three options (User Mailbox, Room Mailbox and Equipment Mailbox) really describe what I'm trying to do and I'm not 100% sure on the difference between them. Suggestions people

Hi I am interested in hearing from other schools, in particular Birmingham schools to see whether they have seen an increase in SPAM over the last few weeks/months. I have been getting a lot of SPAM over the last few weeks as well as a significant number of staff in our school. BGFL recently sent an email regarding problems with SPAM. A lot of the SPAM would get blocked and be filtered with the PMM filtering system that BGFL introduced a year or two ago but now it seems to be bypassing that and coming straight through our inboxes. In particular lots of banking ones are coming through most trying to be HSBC or Natwest. Have other schools experienced the same problem? I be interested in hearing how other schools tackle problems with SPAM. We are using Exchange 2007 and know we could look into Forefront but am worried about the extra administration this could potentially cause and potentially the more expensive licensing we would have to consider for our schools agreement as we would need to buy the enterprise desktop CALs... At a recent training session I went to another colleague said he recommended mailmarshall (is quite cheap and works very well in blocking lots of SPAM) but said he becomes a daily chore to ensure nothing legitemate email is being blocked. Apparantly can cause more calls to IT because some emails will get blocked. I am going to have to do something about this as it's getting worse. Any advice would be most appreciated. Thanks

Hey peeps, I am in the process of setting up OWA for the college, something I have never done before. I managed to setup OWA on the Exchange Server Localhost now I just need to find out how I can access it via the internet. After a lot of googling and talking to some companies that have done this before a quick an easy method is to apparently use a spare External IP address (which I have obtained from my ISP) and NAT that publc IP to my Private IP address. I have an internal and external ISA servers and a Exchange Server. I just don't know where to start really. Do I set up that NAT forward on the ISA server? Exchange is 2007 and Threat Management Gateway 2010 on the ISA. I also have a SSL certificate from my ISP which is setup, so obviously that needs to be applied to the whole login bit, but for now, I just need a push in the right direction. I have also looked at DMZs etc, but quick and easy for now, experimentation later lol Any help would be much appreciated, thanks guys!! /Dan

Morning all! We are experiencing some issues with shared calendars in Exchange, in that all members of staff are able to view and edit any other staff member's Outlook calendar. It seems that setting permissions for individual users or keeping the standard 'Default: None, Anonymous: None' doesn't seem to have any effect! We are using Exchange 2003 on Server 2003 and users have Windows XP Pro with Outlook 2003. I've had a look at the security permissions on the Mailbox Store in Exchange System Manager and noticed that there are two entries which might have an effect; Domain Admins and Enterprise Admins. The profiles of staff users are not members of either group, however the Staff Organisational Unit folder does have 'Domain Admins' and 'Enterprise Admins' entries under the security tab, both of which have full access rights. Is this a possible reason as to why staff can freely edit other staff user's calendars without the need for permissions? Am I right in thinking if I remove 'Domain Admins' and 'Enterprise Admins' from the staff 'OU' folder, this shouldn't have an effect on staff accessing their e-mails? Any suggestions are hugely appreciated!

Hi all, I have recently joined a school and it is my responsibility to ensure that we have enough licenses for all our computers etc. I was wondering if there was a way that I can check to see how many licenses we currently have for Server 2003 and how it works. For example, if I were to buy two more computers then how would I know that we have enough licenses for these computers? The bursar seems to think that we need to get more licenses but I do not know who holds our licenses - nobody here seems to know how many we have or the contact details of a company who may be able to help me (previously I have used Rameseys at other schools). Can I check on the server how many CALs we have? And does it work in the same way for Exchange?

I am in the final stages of testing a migration of a primary schools Office suite from Navaho to Window Server 2008R2, Exchange 2010, Outlook 2007. At the moment, there is very little reliance on IT Security/auditing so there is significant use of shared role based accounts rather than individual logins - I am planning that this will change! As a result, a number of critical external email accounts are role based. For some, bursar, headmaster etc, there is a 1:1 mapping with a person, so its not too much of an issue to use the alias, but for for others, office, sports etc, are roles shared by a number of individuals. Even for individual roles, there will be some sharing of mailbox whilst individuals are for instance absent. I am looking for best practice on how to organise this. Ideally I would like each individual to have their own personal email address, and, based on roles (I have security groups set up for this), access to a role based email address. This would also apply to bursar and headmaster etc where the individual will have both a personal email address and their role. This is my first experience of exchange server. Got a big thick book and internet but nothing specific. Whilst I realise that mailboxes can be shared within Outlook, this is not an ideal solution since they need to be set-up within Outlook rather than managed centrally within exchange. I have done some reading and it has been suggested that room or resource based mailboxes may be suitable. I have set a test one of these up to cover office but have found a few issues: Only able to send email from users account, not room account; room shows up as a room in calendar - would like to disable this. In addition, being unable to test receipt of emails on my test network, I am not 100% sure whether a room or resource mailbox able to receive external emails or not. Many thanks Ian

Hi, I've setup about 12 resource calendars in exchange 2007 and all have been setup as default i haven't made an extra changes to them. When trying to "Open a shared Calendar" in outlook some of them allow me to open them and add appointments (which i dont want to do) and some ask me to "Ask permission" (which i do want it to do). I've then logged onto that mailbox account and fired up outlook and changed the permissions on the calendar to Default "Reviewer" and HR to "Author". Although making this change people can still add diary events without permission. can someone divert me in the right direction? Thank you kindly ohh and Merry Christmas.!!!

We've just moved from exchange 2003 to exchange 2007. Only about a dozen staff use outlook, the rest use web access only. 2 questions: Do I need a CAL for every PC or just the ones using outlook? I'm asking this as I don't think I need a CAL for every staff home PC where they use web access... Do I need to purchase Exchange 07 cals for all my PCs or just the new PCs that we didn't alreday have Exchange 03 cals for (and continue to use my existing exchange 03 cals)? Chris

We have a mailbox on Exchange 2007 called "IT Service Desk" with an alias of "helpdesk" that we use with our helpdesk software so that users can email their requests to us. However despite being able to email us directly by typing just our names the helpdesk address doesn't work unless the full @domain is added to the end. As our domain name isn't the shortest its a pain to type it all in and staff are resorting to emailing the team with requests rather than emailing the helpdesk. I'd like for them to be able to type "helpdesk" and for OWA or Outlook to recognise it. Any ideas? ChrisJ
