Ever since the February 2022 Windows Updates, a small number of users with home folders located on one of our Windows Server 2012 R2 file servers intermittently experience data loss. When it happens, the folder structure remains, as do any hidden files, but the files themselves go missing. Similar to what's described here https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2148567-something-deleted-all-files-but-not-folders except it's users' individual home folders (which are Windows shares in their own right). They're all laptop users, and it's been suggested that it may be happening when they return to site after a period of working at home. We tried opening a support ticket with Microsoft, but Microsoft support seems to be as much in the dark as we are. Has anyone heard of this kind of thing happening before, or might be able to suggest a cause we haven't considered?

Anyone tried installing Office 2007 to a share then getting users to run it from there? is there a limit to the connections? basically, we would rather not have to RIS and then install Office 2007 to every PC in our building, so this could be one solution, to get round that. (we have several issues installing Office 2007 on our PC's which usually requires a clean build to get many things inside the suite working)

I am in the final stages of testing a migration of a primary schools Office suite from Navaho to Window Server 2008R2, Exchange 2010, Outlook 2007. At the moment, there is very little reliance on IT Security/auditing so there is significant use of shared role based accounts rather than individual logins - I am planning that this will change! As a result, a number of critical external email accounts are role based. For some, bursar, headmaster etc, there is a 1:1 mapping with a person, so its not too much of an issue to use the alias, but for for others, office, sports etc, are roles shared by a number of individuals. Even for individual roles, there will be some sharing of mailbox whilst individuals are for instance absent. I am looking for best practice on how to organise this. Ideally I would like each individual to have their own personal email address, and, based on roles (I have security groups set up for this), access to a role based email address. This would also apply to bursar and headmaster etc where the individual will have both a personal email address and their role. This is my first experience of exchange server. Got a big thick book and internet but nothing specific. Whilst I realise that mailboxes can be shared within Outlook, this is not an ideal solution since they need to be set-up within Outlook rather than managed centrally within exchange. I have done some reading and it has been suggested that room or resource based mailboxes may be suitable. I have set a test one of these up to cover office but have found a few issues: Only able to send email from users account, not room account; room shows up as a room in calendar - would like to disable this. In addition, being unable to test receipt of emails on my test network, I am not 100% sure whether a room or resource mailbox able to receive external emails or not. Many thanks Ian

Hi Everyone, I'm trying to install SIMS' Attendance module on our teachers' laptops and I'm having some problems. We have a curriculum and an admin network and I have no control over over the admin network - it's being administered by the council's ICT services. So, a while ago I asked them to setup a trust, which they did, but I can only see the share from the curriculum server but not from any of the clients. I have verified there's a two-way trust and I can ping the admin server by name. I've contacted ICT services again, but I've been put on hold and I need to sort it relatively soon. Has anyone else had this issue, or have any ideas on what to do? Is there something I could from my end? Thanks

Hi all, I have an external firewire drive set up as an AFP share on a 10.5 Server. All has been well (for 6+ months) until I went to find a file today. Two of my folders/directories have disappeared! I checked the AFP log and it has not logged anything since February 4th. I restarted the AFP service and the logging resumed, but I still can't figure out what happened to my folders. I am the only one with permissions to delete those folders. Any thoughts would be VERY much appreciated. Needless to say, this is worrisome! Thanks!

I was surprised to find that nobidy had created an EduGeek group on Flickr for the sharing of all our wonderful photos. If you've been along to an EduGeek-related event and taken a snap or two, please feel free to share your photos with the group. The group can be found at Flickr: EduGeek for those that fancy a browse

I have a new NAS that is AD aware. I'm trying to get GPOP to create a folder within a share for the individual user. I've given the test users group, traverse & list permissions. I've manually created a folder with read write permissions for just the testpupil1 and that worked a treat. Now I need GPO to create a folder with the individual read write permissions for just that user automatically. When GPO Preferences creates a folder what user is it using? The logged in user, or some system account? is this even the right approach? cheers. as my first test failed, access denied using the gpop create folder, I didn't use the users security context.

Hi I am trying to create a shared folder that can be accessed from the domain but at the moment it doesn't seem to be working. If I create a shared file and add a word document to it I can see the word document fine in the C:\ Drive. If I access the shared folder by using \\SERVERNAME\MYSHAREDFOLDER it works fine as well. But im trying to access my shared folder from \\MYDOMAIN\MYSHAREDFOLDER the folder opens fine but then the files or word document inside it does not seem to show up. If I try adding another file to it a message is shown saying "Could not find this item. This is no longer located in \\MYDOMAIN. Verify the item's location and try again. Please Help! Thanks in advance

Hi There, We currently have 50 SMART board screens installed around our school site and we are currently facing issues with the reliability of the Screen Share application that's built into the AM30 / AM40 Android modules. To be straight with you, the Screen Share function has NEVER worked reliably (This has been occurring ever since we had our first 6000 series installed a couple years back) - Some devices won't be able to connect at all (regardless of the device's OS), some will but have massive lag making the experience completely unusable, devices will randomly disconnect and then won't be able to reconnect until the board is reset, and of course on some days specific classrooms will work absolutely fine. It has got to the point where our teaching staff refuse to use the application and are demanding Apple TVs which we really don't want to have to invest in! So far support from Smart has involved links to their knowledge base which hasn't helped at all. I've checked all of the required open ports with our Network Manager, and white listed all of the recommended URLs in Smart's setup guide. We have also checked WIFI coverage in problematic rooms but most of them have their own dedicated AP! I can't find any other articles or forums regarding the reliability of the app so beginning to think it's just us! Does the Screen Share function actually work? Are any organisations able to use it reliably? Am I missing a key part of the setup? Any reply would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Rob

Hello! Can anyone help with this issue please? For some reason I have multiple 'My Documents' folders on the network 'user' share. They should say the names of the users but instead they are displayed as 'My Documents' and it's impossible to find any folders and who they belong to! Some folders show the user name...others don't...It only displays them like this when accessing from a Windows 7 machine. Screenshot attached.

I have a share on my Win 7 machine. I've just tried accesing it from an XP machine and it can't find it. XP can't ping the Win7 machine either. This has started recently. It was all working a few weeks ago. The share is for making msi packages with WinInstall. I've been using it all year no problems, today I've tried to use it to make an image and XP machines can't see the Win7 share or ping the Win7 machine. I think some windows update may have broken it. Previously the firewall was switched off in the domain profile. I've switched it back on and set an exception rule to allow ping - still no joy. Any ideas? Thanks.
