We have approx 60 Macs (mix of emac, imacs, minimacs) and a G5 Xserve all running Leopard (or Leopard Server in the case of the Xserve). All desktop machines are binded (?!) to Open Directory on the Xserve and Active Directory on the multiple Windows Server 2k3 domain controllers. Every week since binding them to AD we get 3 or 4 desktop macs which appear to have lost their trust with Active Directory. We get the green 'everythings cool' light on both the OD and AD connection in Directory Utility yet we cannot login with any domain user. If we unbind the problematic mac, delete the object from AD and rebind it, systems are all go again. There is no obvious pattern, no specific machines that keep loosing trust, no specific models and we've checked the time which is spot on. We also have an Ubuntu 8.04 file server running samba which in turn authenticates with AD using Likewise open (setup to authenticate a month ago). Interestingly, no one could access the shares this morning so after taking a closer look I found using the 'ls -l' command in the terminal, that the usually assigned group 'domain^users' has been replaced with a gid number. Logging in directly to the server using a network account also failed. This looked rather familiar so after unbinding the server, deleting its AD account and then rebinding it all systems were go again and the gids upon running 'ls -l' had turned back into 'domain^users'. Not really what you want for a file server! If it makes any difference, all the macs and the ubuntu machine are on static ips. After originally thinking that it must be a Mac issue somewhere, I'm now leaning towards it being Server 2003 not liking something. Does anyone have any ideas, pointers or similar experiences? Kev

Hi Everyone, I'm trying to install SIMS' Attendance module on our teachers' laptops and I'm having some problems. We have a curriculum and an admin network and I have no control over over the admin network - it's being administered by the council's ICT services. So, a while ago I asked them to setup a trust, which they did, but I can only see the share from the curriculum server but not from any of the clients. I have verified there's a two-way trust and I can ping the admin server by name. I've contacted ICT services again, but I've been put on hold and I need to sort it relatively soon. Has anyone else had this issue, or have any ideas on what to do? Is there something I could from my end? Thanks

Hi all, We have a Paxton Net2 server at each of our sites. Within this, there is a department for that site's staff (managed by Salamander) and another for Trust staff. This means whenever a member of the Trust Central Team joins/leaves, we have to make the changes 7 times. I'd like to try and automate this by using our Trust's Net2 server as the 'master department' and then keeping the other sites in sync. In my head, I'm wondering if there is some way to script the export of the department as a CSV (we only populate name and token) which I can then push to the other servers and have them go through the list and add anyone not already on their server, update anyone who has had a new token or got married and expire anyone who exists on the server but not in the CSV. Does anyone know if this is possible or, even better, have a solution for such a scenario? Thank you in advance. Kind Regards, Callum

Hi, Our school has become a MAT recently and one of the things we have to do in the IT department is setup a domain trust so that users at the new school can eventually use their traditional login details to access resources here. The domain names use the forms myschool.sch.uk and newschool.local. However I am having real issues getting the domain trust between the 2 working properly. So far I have: 1. Used OpenSSL to create certificates for all domain controllers involved in both domains. Installed these certificates and the relevant root certificate authority certs so that they can all use LDAP over SSL on port 636. 2. Setup firewall rules between the 2 sites based on Microsofft's documentation here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/179442/how-to-configure-a-firewall-for-domains-and-trusts 3. Setup the DNS so that _msdcs.newschool.local and newschool, local are available here as secondary zones, and setup myschool.sch.uk and _msdcs.myschool.sch.uk as secondary zones on the new school's DCs. These zones are transferring and replicating OK, and I can resolve DNS names for both domains on all servers in both locations. 4. Setup a domain trust (Trust type= forest, 2 way, transitive). I have enabled Kerberos AES encryption on both ends as all DCs are 2012 R2 or newer. I have also validated the trust using Active Directory Domains & Trusts, at both ends on multiple DCs and clients; all receive the result "The trust has been validated. It is in place and active." Now I want to add user and groups to certain roles, however I keep receiving errors stating that the domain controllers required to find the objects I want are not available. This is really odd because the MMC resolves the full domain name for a user or group when I partially type it in and click "Check Names". I have attached a picture of this error, and as you'll be able to see, the GUI is displaying the full name of the user object, and I only typed in the first 3 letters of the username and clicked "Check Names". So, the server is sending the request over to newschool.local and retrieving the user account details, populating the box but then generating an error that it could not contact the domain controller. All the DCs respond to PINGS, so ICMP is actively working between the 2 sites. Run a DCDIAG on all servers, and apart from minor eventlog replication issues, all AD services appear to be functioning properly. I also ran the command remotely on servers from my local machine to make sure that remote functionality was behaving itself, and this generated the same positive results. Any support documentation on the MS site points to DNS issues being the main cause, but as I mentioned above, DNS is replicating, updating and behaving as it should. All relevant servers for AD services are contactable and listed in DNS correctly. Any advice or suggestions would be much appreciated as I'm out of ideas now. Regards D

Hi, this week we've had workstations losing their trust with the domain, some multiple times a day. I looked in the Event Viewer on our 3 domain controllers and there were lots of errors reported by the win2003 server, replication errors. Event Type: Warning Event Source: NtFrs Event Category: None Event ID: 13508 Date: 18/07/2015 Time: 14:23:17 User: N/A Computer: DC Description: The File Replication Service is having trouble enabling replication from PDC to DC for c:\windows\sysvol\domain using the DNS name pdc.domain.town.sch.uk. FRS will keep retrying. Following are some of the reasons you would see this warning. [1] FRS can not correctly resolve the DNS name PDC.domain.town.sch.uk from this computer. [2] FRS is not running on name.domain.town.sch.uk. [3] The topology information in the Active Directory for this replica has not yet replicated to all the Domain Controllers. This event log message will appear once per connection, After the problem is fixed you will see another event log message indicating that the connection has been established. For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. Data: 0000: 21 07 00 00 !... ALSO Event Type: Error Event Source: NTDS Replication Event Category: Replication Event ID: 1864 Date: 20/07/2015 Time: 15:40:35 User: NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON Computer: DC Description: This is the replication status for the following directory partition on the local domain controller. Directory partition: DC=ForestDnsZones,DC=domain,DC=town,DC=sch,DC=uk The local domain controller has not recently received replication information from a number of domain controllers. The count of domain controllers is shown, divided into the following intervals. More than 24 hours: 2 More than a week: 2 More than one month: 2 More than two months: 2 More than a tombstone lifetime: 0 Tombstone lifetime (days): 180 Domain controllers that do not replicate in a timely manner may encounter errors. It may miss password changes and be unable to authenticate. A DC that has not replicated in a tombstone lifetime may have missed the deletion of some objects, and may be automatically blocked from future replication until it is reconciled. To identify the domain controllers by name, install the support tools included on the installation CD and run dcdiag.exe. You can also use the support tool repadmin.exe to display the replication latencies of the domain controllers in the forest. The command is "repadmin /showvector /latency ". For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp. It was always my intention to demote our Win2003 server today so that is what I did. I tried to run dcpromo but it errored with a logon failure, so I ran dcpromo /forceremove then removed entries in AD Comp & User and AD Sites & Services. Removed the NS from DNS then ran dcdiag.exe everything passed except for:- Starting test: SystemLog A warning event occurred. Hi, My school was recently federated, and as such I have been asked to give the teachers the ability to log on to both schools with the same username and password and with the same Home area and shared drives. We are a kent school and both schools are using the same Internet service provided by EIS. As such, the easiest and least expensive way to link the schools was to open up the ports between both schools. I am now able to remotely log on to their servers and vice versa. This is where things get shakey. I thought the best way to give the teachers what they need was to set up domain trusts (which I have never done before) and then give them the option of which domain to login to on the logon page. I believe I have set up the domain trusts OK. In My schools DNS I can see the federated school and vice versa. When you get to a logon screen here you have the option of which domain to log on to. SO I choose the other schools domain and used a username and password from their domain, but when I do this I get the error message "The system cannot log you on now because the domain is not available". COuld anyone point me in the right direction with this? I'm convinced that I'm either going about this whole thing the wrong way, or I've made some small error in the setup. Thanks,
