Way before Christmas I re-installed WSUS on a 2008R2 DC. For a while it limped along until last week. Whenever I try to open WSUS via either Server Manager or Admin Tools or wherever else you can open it from, the snap-in fails to load and essentially MMC crashes. I do have a restart pending after some Windows Updates but unfortunately I'm only at this place once a week in the morning where they are heavily reliant on their server and network shared areas so I don't have the option to reboot when I am here. Are there any other things I can try before succumbing to telling them they NEED to reboot the server?

Setting NTFS Permissions on multiple files / folders "Windows Server 2008 R2"
Guest posted a topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Hi I'm going to go straight to the point, Now I've been aware of this problem for a while but surely there must be a way round it!!! but how I can set file permissions on multiple files / folders at one time. I have got to re organise a few shared folders with different permissions but I don't fancy spending hours on it when I know it can be done within minutes. I know I could do this with Windows server 2003 but since the release of 2008 they removed this. does anyone know how to get the security tab back when you highlight multiple folders or a program that will do the same job?? thanks- 4 replies

Hi, After setting up new GPOs over the holidays to take over from our CC3 install which is now all but gone (yay!) I came across a strange problem. When anyone logged in their home folder (setup in AD) was redirecting to the root of the share and not their folder as specified. After lots of investigation it looked as if it was a problem with group policy and the time taking to apply to the local computers. Sadly this was just a case of misdirection. If you are having the same problem may I suggest you take a look at the link below as it solved my problem straight away. The Home Folder may be mapping incorrectly when logging on to a Windows XP-based computer Enjoy!

Hi i have a computer that has been built for teacher use a couple years ago, i will refer this as "Domain A" the computer now isnt used by teacher but is to be used by other members of staff needing access to another domain "Domain B" "Domain A" is hosted on site and "Domain B" is host off site via the internet ive took it off Domain a this morning and have put the new computer onto Domain B the problem im having is. when the users log into domain B they dont get some of the Group policys set for domain b ive run GPResult /h report.html and read the report and is showing up the group policy client side extension problem. ive attached a JPG of the error within event viewer (Shown Below) can anyone tell me where there could be still reminance of the old Domain A and where i could delete anything from domain a. Im really trying to avoid the need to re image this pc. so if i can fix it this way that would be great im about 90% sure this problem is due to a GPP i set from Domain A which is still affecting the computer in Domain B Hope someone can help! Many thanks

can they work together? I've been playing with these settings on Windows 2008 R2 gpo and windows 7 and if both apply then gpo settings break. What have I done wrong? If I remove the man profiles setting then the gpo settings apply but as soon as I apply the man profiles on a user account then only certain gpo apply but not all. Here's an example: I created gpo setting with a shortcut and wall paper, restricted users to modify the task bar, access to the c:\ drives, map a network drive and ect.. If a user log on with out Man. profile then everything works as it should. As soon as I apply the Man. profiles and log off and back on to windows 7 desktop, the only thing I can see is the background still apply, but not the rest. The user can access the c:\ drive and can see the network neighbor. Can someone point me to the right information? Thanks!

What would be the safer way to reinstall server on a raid 5???
Guest posted a topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Hi all I work in a school, im the schools technician, I want some advice before I go ahead and mess with my server I have a novatech server with 3 x 1TB Sata hard disks in it. At the moment im using windows server 2008 R2 with the system disks on raid 1 setup mirrored and the last HDD none raided! I want to be able to raid the 3 hard drives on to a Raid 5 setup. What is the safest way of me imaging the OS on to a portable HDD, raiding the hard disks on raid 5 then putting the OS back?? i have used Clonezilla for imaging and cloning so I'm comfortable in using this. has anyone done this before and successfully?? anyone had any problems or would for see any problems with this idea in the long run??? also what would be the better option, software Raid or Hardware Raid? your comments and opinions are welcome!! thanks Phil. -
Hello everyone, I need to make two public IP addresses to be resolved with particular FQDNs that do not belong to us and our domain. As an example: 10.0.0.1 - our.domain1.com 11.0.0.1 - customer.subdomain1.domain2.com 12.0.0.1 - customer.subdomain2.domain2.com From what I know, the customers made firewall rules for our office public IP address to be accessible. customer.subdomain1.domain2.com and customer.subdomain2.domain2.com are not propagated world-wide, only the public IP addresses seem to be working. I understand that instead of manually change all etc\hosts files on our company laptops, I can make a change on our DNS server to point to 11.0.0.1 and 12.0.0.1 when our employees try to access customer.subdomain1.domain2.com and customer.subdomain2.domain2.com, respectively. I just don't know how to do it. The employees aren't going to access the sites outside of our network. We have Windows Server 2008 as a DNS server. Any help (especially, with instructions) is much appreciated as I have basic understanding of DNS server configuration. P.S. I tried adding "Stab zone" and then adding "Secondary zone" by adding the zone names for FQDNs and adding public IPs, in both cases I got the same error (attached). Any ideas what I am doing wrong? As I mentioned earlier, these are not world-wide propagated sites. There is only an exception in the firewall rules, to allow only our office public IP. And again, as I mentioned earlier, this should work with the same idea as etc\hosts file, but for everyone accessing our DNS server, not to change the files themselves (etc\hosts) on every machine. Thanks

Good morning all, We're trying to demote our old domain controller (Which I will call DC-OLD for this) however whenever we turn the server off, no one can access their folders, you get an error message at the top-left that says "Something went wrong". Users can still log in and authenticate successfully so it must still be connecting to AD somehow. The HAP Server has the new DC as its only DNS Address. Is there something that needs to be changed in the configuration? Thanks in advance for any help! We are stuck. Charlie

I have currently built a server for Hype-V purposes, I want to be able to take my physical server machines and migrate them to a virtual machine. Is there a way of doing this? One thing i am worried about is the drivers for the physical machine stopping the virtual machine from running! would this be a problem? My Hyper V is running on Windows Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 and my physical Servers are running on Windows server 2008 R2 -
Hi All, We have just switched from windows embedded to thinpro HP t510 thin clients however when connecting to the published desktop via the ICA connection the full screen display does not display the correct resolution. Is there a setting of some sort on the server side where you can configure display settings for the clients as I have exhausted all avenues to get it to display correctly we are running xenapp 6.5 windows server 2008 r2. thanks in advance

Hi Guys, Quick question, I'm preparing to upgrade from Exchange 2003 to 2007 and have come across an issue reported by the Best Proactive Analyser tool. The tool reports findings of active directory connectors on both domain controllers which must be decommissioned before exchange 2007 can be installed. After reviewing the following article from our friends at MS (One or more Active Directory Connector servers were found) the recommended action is to "Remove All ADC Service Components" which I'm reluctant to do considering that the connectors are on domain controllers. Has anyone been here before? Thanks Matt

I am trying to free up some space on a Windows 2008 R2 server, to do this I need to access all user directories, I can access most user directories but when I try to access some of them I get the error message, "You don't currently have permission to access this folder. Click continue to permanently get access to this folder.". I am logged on as an administrator on the server. This tends to happen on the occasional My Pictures file, but sometimes also occurs on the entire users directory. Because of this the data used by a user is not being reported correctly as it is missing the restricted folders off the directory size calculations. Firstly why is this happening? Is there a way to bulk assign rights without affecting the users access rights? I can go into the individual users directory and change the ownership one at a time but this will just take far too long and I am worried that the user will no longer have rights once I change the ownership. Any help will be gratefully appreciated, thanks.

Hi Everyone, I have created a mandatory profile, Mandate.v2,in windows server 2008 R2. I need to deploy mandatory profiles to multiple user, So i have changed the user's profile path to \\server\\profiles\mandate.v2. As per my knowledge,This is how we deploy mandatory profiles to multiple user.I can successfully login to accounts as a mandatory profile. User's internet doesn't work on any browser. It says 'site can't be reached'. If i right click the chrome or internet explorer and click run as administrator,It works. Is it some thing related with permissions ? I have stored the mandatory.V2 under folder 'Profiles' and the user's Appdata,Documents and download are redirected to another folder called 'mandate accounts'. What permission should i set on profiles, Mandatory.V2,and mandate staff accounts ? Thanks Beek

We have recently decided to start the upgrade process and roll out Windows 7 Enterprise. Win 7 is currently installed on my machine and a few others for testing. Our printers are deployed using a batch file as different people need different printers. The batch file works correctly on XP and should on Win 7. When I run the script it asks if I want to install the driver, for which I press yes. However the printer then does not appear? Which confuses me, our print server is running server 2003 R2 incase this makes a difference

Hi All So I have two classes (about 40 laptops) running windows 7 in a domain environment (windows server 2008 r2) which require wireless access in order log on and do work, currently they are connecting to the server via two basic (home use) type wireless routers both running wrt software, but users are finding log on times to be unbearably slow as well as other related issues, Can anyone advise on a specialized router that can easily handle this amount of users but wont cost me through the roof? Any tips would be greatly appreciated, Thanks Ben

Hi, I am planning my sims.net server upgrade from 2008 R2 to 2019 including upgrading sql server from 2012 to 2016 (I think this is the current version capita support) . We have sims, FMS, Solus, Docstorage etc installed. I have built a 2019 VM and just wanted to know if anyone has any guides to migrate from 2008 to 2019 and if I should keep the server name the same etc. Also regarding the clients running solus will I have to redeploy this again from the new server? If possible I want them running in parallel and then just make the change when we can get some downtime. Thanks in advance

Hi Peeps Im having trouble setting up desktop redirection to how i would like it and need your help! but before i start im running a Server 2k8 R2 Domain with Winows 7 Pro x64bit clients So, I have setup a home drive in the user profiles in AD and have set up a GPO with the folders redirected to the home folder. now it does everything ok. saving files accessing files etc... but what its not doing is, saving my prefernces i.e. wallpaper that i specified or the position of my icons. It doesnt happen if i logout and log back in again as the preferences are saved. but if i reboot its all back to basics. everything is lost. my specified wallpaper and location of the icons now i have got delprof2 running as a script to delete profiles from local computer when the computer shuts down. (this is to save space on the hard drive and privacy reasons) Now is it me or should any preferences that i make to my desktop save to appdata --> roaming ????? I couldnt imagine it being the appdata --> local or that wouldnt work as a roaming profile I so im thinking that delprof2 is deleting something to do with my preferences. so what is it that i should be copying over with my folder redirection so that my preferences are saved? any ideas?

Hi All, I'd like to know what is the best way to securely lock down binaries in Windows Server 2008 R2 ? So that only certain application that is white listed can run, the other should not run (white listing) Should I configure it using Applocker through Local GPO ? or using SRP ? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, AWT
