Ever since the February 2022 Windows Updates, a small number of users with home folders located on one of our Windows Server 2012 R2 file servers intermittently experience data loss. When it happens, the folder structure remains, as do any hidden files, but the files themselves go missing. Similar to what's described here https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2148567-something-deleted-all-files-but-not-folders except it's users' individual home folders (which are Windows shares in their own right). They're all laptop users, and it's been suggested that it may be happening when they return to site after a period of working at home. We tried opening a support ticket with Microsoft, but Microsoft support seems to be as much in the dark as we are. Has anyone heard of this kind of thing happening before, or might be able to suggest a cause we haven't considered?

Hi, After setting up new GPOs over the holidays to take over from our CC3 install which is now all but gone (yay!) I came across a strange problem. When anyone logged in their home folder (setup in AD) was redirecting to the root of the share and not their folder as specified. After lots of investigation it looked as if it was a problem with group policy and the time taking to apply to the local computers. Sadly this was just a case of misdirection. If you are having the same problem may I suggest you take a look at the link below as it solved my problem straight away. The Home Folder may be mapping incorrectly when logging on to a Windows XP-based computer Enjoy!

Admittedly I'm not great at UNIX but I managed a shell script to remove old user folders stored in a text file. Login as root using "sudo -s" and you password then run the following script by saving as a".sh" file and using chmod 755 to compile and ./ to run. #! /bin/sh while read file; do cd /Userdata/Data/; #SHAREPOINT echo "Deleting" $file "from Server"; rm -rf "$file"; #Will delete the user folder based on user ID in text file echo $file "Deleted from Macserver on "; date; echo "\n"; done < user.txt; # file holding usernames. This isn't the best script but it works fine for our college. If anyone has a better script I'd be more than happy to use i.

Hi All, iv got a whole year group that has its home areas not mapping correctly its mapping to the share root not to their home folder Help please Kind Regards, Bushby

Morning, having a strange issue with two members of staff, both of which are editing a file, saving over the existing file in their own documents locations only to reopen the file to find it reverted to the original state. If they save as and change the name the file it is fine until next time they change it. Both staff using windows 7 laptops saving back to home location on a 2003 server (we have another 60 staff using same laptop from same image, with same permissions, and saving to same location). Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in advance

I am running server 2000, and am trying to map the home folder of a user to U: \\fileserver\user$ The share, user$, has already been created on the fileserver, which is the same server that runs the active directory that is controlling this user account. When i try this, it tells me that it cant map the home folder because it already exists. Please help.

Hey guys, I am currently working at a particular primary school, refurbishing their network, due to the previous company being incompetent. For the most part I have removed all the defunct and broken scripts, policies and profiles. Everything is now running much smoother. I was doing my usual uniform checks on everything and noticed there were rather large differences in how the folder redirection paths were setup. I have setup new and working folder redirections and those are great. But what I have noticed is the Documents redirection is not uniform across the board. Some look like this: \\Server01\Users\Type\%Username% and others look like this: \\Server01\Users\Type\%Username%\Documents. I have redirected the appdata to \\Server01\Users\Type\%Username%\Application Data\Roaming and setup new redirects for Favorites and Downloads to \\Server01\Users\Type\%Username%\Documents\ respectively. So this botches the layout if they use the first path as I don't want appdata visible to them. They need roaming profiles because of the roaming ability of settings etc but their server is neither here or there so I want tiny profiles, hence me redirecting everything to their home drive. The home directories pointing to the first one obviously mess up the consistency. The effective folder redirection points to "Redirect to the users home directory" which i believe is fine. The issue lies in the fact the paths added to the users H drive when the users were created have not been put in consistently. I have manually changed the path for some users and moved their documents one extra folder deep, but we are talking about 100 more users and I dont have the time on site, or the will power to do it all manually. So my question is this. Can I automagically move every users documents to the new location and change the respective path at the same time? My current thought is setting up a new folder redirection policy to point to the correct path and tick the move contents button and then bulk change the path in the users settings. Is this the only way? I believe it would do this at next log on and I am worried if it did not work correctly it could leave people without any access to their documents and leave me fixing it all manually. If noone can help before end of play tomorrow, I will have to tell the resident IT person they will need to go through it manually when they can. Thanks in advance guys.

Hello Guys. I new to this site. I'm very happy to be part of edugeek.net. We are implement Active directory in my organization recently. We have created the home folder assigned to the domain users through the domain controller. Most of the users are filling the home folder with the Media files like Songs and Videos. I want to restrict those kind data in home folders. Could you please any one help me there. Any help/advice are highly appericiated. Regards, Sri.

I'm having issues with the "Libraries" directories (Music, Pictures, Downloads etc) not inheriting permissions from the parent. SYSTEM and the user / owner of the Home Folder gets FC access, but no other permissions are applied. Attempting to take ownership with Domain Admin is unsuccessful, replacing permissions on child items is unsuccessful, logging on as server local admin and forcing inheritance from the parent is somewhat successful but results in a mess of permissions being added / duplicated. Directories are created when users are made in ADUC by using the %USERNAME% variable, inherited permissions from parent are applied to Home Folder successfully. It's only Libraries that are affected; all other directories in Home Folder inherit correctly.

Good morning I have recently moved all of our users home folders from an old 2003 server to a new 2008 R2 server. Their home folders used to be a path of \\Servername\Username$, they have redirected documents to these folders. I have changed the home folder path in AD to \\servername\Staff\Username and their home folder maps correctly when you browse in My Computer but the Documents folder is still redirected to the old server location which isn't available anymore. I have enforced the policy to see if that makes a difference but it looks as if Windows is using some locally cached profile data or reg entry with the old settings in. I have deleted the local profiles of some staff on some PC's and when the profile is recreated the problem is corrected. The issue is that some staff have local docs and there are about 600 PC's that will need this doing if I go down that route. Does anyone know of a solution to enforce the old profiles to take the new My Documents redirection location or is going to be a whole site local profile deletion and recreation? Many thanks Paul
