Ever since the February 2022 Windows Updates, a small number of users with home folders located on one of our Windows Server 2012 R2 file servers intermittently experience data loss. When it happens, the folder structure remains, as do any hidden files, but the files themselves go missing. Similar to what's described here https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/2148567-something-deleted-all-files-but-not-folders except it's users' individual home folders (which are Windows shares in their own right). They're all laptop users, and it's been suggested that it may be happening when they return to site after a period of working at home. We tried opening a support ticket with Microsoft, but Microsoft support seems to be as much in the dark as we are. Has anyone heard of this kind of thing happening before, or might be able to suggest a cause we haven't considered?

Hi there, We are running a fleet of MBA's on 10.9.4 connected to Active Directory and mounting DFS Shares from a Windows 2012 R2 server. We use ControlPlane to, based on a network context, run a script to mount the network drives (will include the script below). The issue is that when the Macs sleep or the screen is shut, after they are awakened, the drives are remounting and creating a few extra duplicates, eventually flooding the desktop throughout the day. We assumed it was the script so we edited it as seen below, but the issue is persisting.. We have only seen this happen since the use of DFS shares was introduced instead of normal Windows shares. We have not verified this, but the issue does not seem to happen on Yosemite (NOT VERIFIED). Any ideas? Thanks guys and gals. Hey I've got a new san and server combo. The 2 hosts are 2x10gbit each (lan) and the san is 4x 12gbit sas (2 to each host) I've added the new 10gig adapters to the Lan vswitch and kept an 1gig adapter in setup as standby. I've done a crystaldiskmark on the vms and the speed is amazing at over 3000MB/s I was testing file transfer by sending a 12GB ISO via SMB from one VM to the other but the transfer caps out at 1.6Gbit? is this expected, what should I look for?

Hi All, I'm pulling my hair out here with home drives on a AD-OD network. We have Open Directory setup on one mac server with it authenticating against Active Directory. The users get their home drive location from the UNC path in Active Directory and all worked fine last year. I am just rolling over the users but am having major issues. At the begining i was getting "unable to login because an unknown error occured". I can get some year groups to work correctly but some years I keep getting this error. I can get year 7, 8 and 10 to work. If I set a year 9 pupil to a year 10's home drive all works correctly but I can't get it to work as I want it. Hope this makes sense but HELP! Dan

I need a budget server that can accommodate 6+ hard drives to run a windows share. I already have the drives. CPU and RAM don't matter (as long as it can run server 2016) This is only going to be a share target for another server. I'll use the server tools to create a software raid. I'll probably run an £30 SSD or 2 for the OS. the old ml150s could do this but the new ones are too small and don't have the sata/power connections. otherwise I might look at a sinology box but I don't like proprietary systems (when things go wrong, a windows box can be troubleshooted).

Has anyone else come across an issue where your windows 7 clients (all except 1st to connect) are very slow to access the network. This includes, logging in, access mapped drives and network start menu's. My 1st client will log in within 10 seconds the rest take up to a minuet. If i was to set a local desktop rather than network desktop they are all equally fast. Once they have logged in and I hit start on the machines, the 1st menu will load, the rest are slow as above. This is a Primary Network with 1 x Server 2012 Server running all services. If i add a second server as a member server and transfer the data to this system there are no issues.

Hello Edugeek forum peeps, This is my first post , hopefully i will get some where .i have been pulling my hair out over this problem for a little while. A bit of background , i have a magic triangle setup in my school , with my ad as the main authentication server and the od as the preferences manager and to provide some file services What I'm trying to do , my users need two home shares , one for when they log into the apple os and one for when they log in windows os. They have one for windows already, i need an extra one for the apple login , as to prevent file format confusion between the two areas and os's. bear in my mind i work in a school. I have tried to create augmented user areas on top of the ad users using the wgm tool. , not much luck . Any pointers would be appreciated Also i would the users to have the access to their windows home area via a shortcut on their desktop on the apple os. I know in windows , you add the %username% line at the end of a share path to create and use the area with the login named used, but whats the equivalent line in mac. All help will be much appreciated. CK

We have integrated a hundred Macs into our network. When ever a Mac tries to read a directory on a Windows 2003 R2 file share or Windows 2008, it takes an inordinate amount of time. Even listing a simple sub-directory with just 3 1K files in it can take upwards of a minute. Now we installed an afp file share and speed is dramatically faster under exact same testing conditions. But of course we are a Windows and Linux shop running AD. And even if we bought three or four Mac Pros and set up afp file shares, we'd have no way to manage them. This problem of slow smb directory and file listing is driving us crazy. We have tested for months, replaced a core switch, tested and replaced cables, new N AP. All work perfectly with Windows client. No delays etc. Even simultaneously with Macs and Windows laptops, Windows machines are fine. Any suggestions, we are going crazy?

Hi all Just wondering if anyone could help with an ongoing issue that we are scratching our heads over. We are a college using about 270 Apple Mac’s on an Active Directory network with Windows 2016 servers and Adobe products. The issues that we had going from Xyratex servers to Windows Server 2016 is that we had to use Acronis Files Connect for AFP connections. Since we made the move to this we've had our file servers hitting the ceiling with high CPU usage when students in Media are transferring their files over. We've stated that students should not be working on their Adobe CC products in accordance with Adobe's recommendations. So when we have several classes all moving their Premier Pro, Photoshop, etc files over to their scratch the files servers that's when the Acronis Files Connect CPU usage hits the roof. Acronis have identified a 'bug' in their software that causes high CPU usage and have recommended a downgrade. Is any other colleges experiencing similar issues and is there another way of working, i.e. using newest version of SMB ver 3? Hope that makes sense! Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you

I have a new NAS that is AD aware. I'm trying to get GPOP to create a folder within a share for the individual user. I've given the test users group, traverse & list permissions. I've manually created a folder with read write permissions for just the testpupil1 and that worked a treat. Now I need GPO to create a folder with the individual read write permissions for just that user automatically. When GPO Preferences creates a folder what user is it using? The logged in user, or some system account? is this even the right approach? cheers. as my first test failed, access denied using the gpop create folder, I didn't use the users security context.

Morning all, Been having all manner of Mac permissions issues for a while and i've found some fixes for a few bits but still boggled by one thing. Our mac users are accessing a windows share via SMB. They authenticate with their AD accounts (Macs are bound to AD). They can access the files/folders as needed on the share. They can create new files/folders and all users can access and read these. The users will copy a folder down to their Mac to work on it, then want to share these between each others Macs. When a folder is copied from the SMB share, its permissions are amended to owner r/w, everyone no access. So we have to do a manual tweak of the permissions to allow everyone r/w access. This is time consuming and not ideal. We had a similar issue with this happening on files made on their macs, but I have used a custom umask so that all new files/folders have everyone r/w by default, which works well. However, for the Windows share, this doesn't apply, and it doesn't seem to use the NTFS permissions when copying to the mac. How can I make it so that when files are copied to the Mac, they keep the permissions from the SMB share, rather than generate new restricted permissions? I've tried accessing via CIFS, which has been suggested on various articles. Any help, much appreciated!

Hi Guys, im fairly new to SCVMM. I have one VM on a host that is showing the unsupported configuration error. When i go to properties the error im seeing is ive looked on the internet and registering SMB fileshares keeps coming up. Various pages mention going to fabric and add storage, entering the provider name and choosing native windows WMI protocol. but i dont get that option, am i missing something?
