Our Macs are currently integrated with our domain using the "Magic Triangle" configuration with a Mac Mini server for OD. The students here all authenticate with their AD logins and their home drives are mapped using SMB so by default they will save to the network. (No Local Homes) This system does work. However over the year or so that we've had it set up like this, it has been pretty unstable on a few different fronts.. Here's our network; Windows Server 2003 D/C running AD on a ".local" domain **GASP** Mac Mini Server (10.6.8) running OD Cisco Switches + VLANs and gigabit networking throughout. 80 or so Mac Clients (10.6.8) over 5 mac suites. Here's our problems; - Login time. Always been slow, anything up to 3 minutes to log in. After 10.6.8 regularly 3-5 minutes to log in. (Heard this was to do with IPv6??). Been living with this for a while. - Programs crashing out when saving to the network - recently happening a lot! Got a new quirky problem with power point taking 10 mins to save a files unless you "save as" and change the name - after which it will save instantly. Students saving iWeb files are waiting up to 30 minutes for their site to save. - Large files such as indesign documents, fireworks projects, photoshop documents are slow when accessing/editing + crashy when saving. - Losing space on our windows server - Media students are creating large websites on the network + import lots of videos/images taking up a sizeable amount of space on our windows server. What I want to know is if there is a better way of setting this up? Something that I've overlooked? I've been considering setting them back up with local home directories again.. But this then brings up the issue of data not being backed up.. I think students working from the same workstation each time isn't an issue it's just the backing up of the data thats the problem. Over the christmas break our domain is changing from .local to .somethingelse so i'm hoping this will help but I know that the space issue isn't going to change and I'm pretty sure it's still going to be unstable when accessing large files straight off of the network. Does anyone have any light they can shed on the subject? Much appreciated. Regards, Martin

Hello Edugeek forum peeps, This is my first post , hopefully i will get some where .i have been pulling my hair out over this problem for a little while. A bit of background , i have a magic triangle setup in my school , with my ad as the main authentication server and the od as the preferences manager and to provide some file services What I'm trying to do , my users need two home shares , one for when they log into the apple os and one for when they log in windows os. They have one for windows already, i need an extra one for the apple login , as to prevent file format confusion between the two areas and os's. bear in my mind i work in a school. I have tried to create augmented user areas on top of the ad users using the wgm tool. , not much luck . Any pointers would be appreciated Also i would the users to have the access to their windows home area via a shortcut on their desktop on the apple os. I know in windows , you add the %username% line at the end of a share path to create and use the area with the login named used, but whats the equivalent line in mac. All help will be much appreciated. CK

Hi all, hope you can help me! I have some iMacs running Snow Leopard connected to a Leopard server in a magic triangle configuration. It is taking a good few minutes to log on the network using AD credentials. Even when putting domain/*username* in the login box. It is a .local domain and I have seen there can be some issues? Thanks!

We are in the process of integrating several iMacs into our windows domain using the "Magic Triangle" configuration, However we want to keep users windows and mac home directories seperate, so when a user logs on to a windows machine they get there usual windows home stored on our 2008 server, but when they log into a mac they get a different Mac home directory that is stored on the Mac Mini Server (Running snow leopard server). All the clients also run Snow Leopard, Here is what i have done so far; Mac Server is binded to AD and to itself and setup as a OD Master. Clients are bound to Both the Mac server and the Windows Domain (in that search order). The "Use SMB" and "Force Local Home" options are not selected on either the Server or the Clients. I have enabled AFP and Setup and Automount to the Users Folder. I have verified all DNS, Forward and Reverse Lookup Zones are all setup correctly etc. I have attempted to setup an Augmented User Record but cannot get this option to appear in Workgroup Manager. I have noticed that in Workgroup Manager AD accounts are showing an NFS and an AFP share both on the Mac server but i have no idea where this NFS is coming from or how to get rid of it? ANY help on configuring this Dual Home Directories configuration would be hugely appreciated! Thanks, Rob
