I am in the midst of developing a Powershell script from an original I found on the web to cater to my colleagues needs. We currently use a VBS script developed by some colleagues who no longer work with us in conjunction with a spreadsheet of users. I am looking to reduce the amount of information required in this spreadsheet and ultimately reduce the preparation time required for it. In a lot of schools, we have started implementing DFS Namespaces instead of pointing directly to folders on a server. I am wondering if there is any way currently (I know it's going to be featured in Powershell on the new version of Windows Server) of retrieving a DFS namespace so that the script can generate the path for user's profile and home folder itself? The original script adds the user and moves it to the relevant OU. My additions include actually creating the user's home and profile folders and applied permissions. My next step is to reduce the total time from obtaining the list of new users to them being fully uploaded to AD which is where my thinking of generating paths automatically came from. I have tested what I have done so far on Server 2008R2 and 2012 and 2012R2 and it's good so far. I'd appreciate any ideas or if you need anymore info from me let me know! NOTE: I am a complete newbie to powershell and I appreciate there may already be scripts out there that can do what I want, I learn better by doing it myself then trying to decipher someone else's code

Hi there, We are running a fleet of MBA's on 10.9.4 connected to Active Directory and mounting DFS Shares from a Windows 2012 R2 server. We use ControlPlane to, based on a network context, run a script to mount the network drives (will include the script below). The issue is that when the Macs sleep or the screen is shut, after they are awakened, the drives are remounting and creating a few extra duplicates, eventually flooding the desktop throughout the day. We assumed it was the script so we edited it as seen below, but the issue is persisting.. We have only seen this happen since the use of DFS shares was introduced instead of normal Windows shares. We have not verified this, but the issue does not seem to happen on Yosemite (NOT VERIFIED). Any ideas? Thanks guys and gals. Hi Everyone, I have a verystrange and annoying issue. Pupil home folder is fine, all present and correct. When the pupils logs in, it disappears... From the server! I restore the folder, check ACLs and it reappears (usually without them having to logoff. I'm not sure if this is just a one time thing, as it seems to be only happening once per user, but we have over 1200 pupil accounts. I have recently descovered that our setup of DFS-R sat in a 2012R2 VM stored on a CSV could be an issue, but i removed the DFSR last week. Any help would be great.

Hi I've been using Win7 RTM on my system now for a month or so but I've got an issue with my system writing any data that is over 200k to a DFS-R share (Error appears with the code of 0x8007003B), I can write to a DFS share just fine so it seems to be something to do with the replication of data. I can also write the file to the DFS-R folder if I go through the administrative share. My participating servers in DFS-R are Win2k3 R2 based with the latest service pack, WinXP and Vista clients are totally fine in writing data to the shares which leads me to think this is a bug. Anyone having issues with DFS-R with a Win7 client? Cheers P.S Forgot to mention I've tried this on a totally different system with a clean build of Win7 (just registered to the domain no patches whatsoever) and today I received a brand new laptop with a HP image of Windows 7 which is exhibiting the same issue as above.

Hello, (I did notice a thread form a while ago posted by Duke, but after being in contact with him, he is still experiencing this issue. So I thought I would ask you guys again.) I am having an issue where - when a users my documents folder is redirected to a DFS share, windows explorer requires a manual refresh after creating a new folder, file, etc. (Interestingly, not when making a new briefcase) I have tried a number of MS knowledge base articles, a hot-fix and a registry change, all with no success. (( http:// support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823291 ; http:// support.microsoft.com/kb/873392 )) The problem only occurs when going through the my documents icon. If I map a home drive for the user to the exact same location (IE - H:\DFS\user\documents) , open that drive and make new folders, then there is no problem. Mapping my documents to H:\ also resolves the issue, however, as we need folder sync and people logging on off site with cached profiles this is not a workable solution (as H: will not map and there will be no access to their docs.) Has anyone managed to figure a fix for this? Thanks, Pete.

We currently have two file servers both are Server 2008, one of these hosts the DFS root. We will soon be adding a new Server 2008 R2 file server, how would we move the DFS root to this server? The location of the data will remain on the current servers for the present.

Hello everyone, I have an interesting issue that I cannot work out for the life of me! I have the following folder setup on one of my file servers for user's home drives: \\SERVER-01\Users\%USERNAME% I have also got DFS replication between this file server and another for these home drives with the following path: \\DOMAIN\Data\Users\%USERNAME% My problem is that if I setup an auto apply quota on the parent folder for the home drives (Users), the quota does not get applied to each of the folders. This happens when both mapping to \\SERVER-01\Users\%USERNAME% as well as mapping to \\DOMAIN\Data\Users\%USERNAME% I have other shares that I replicate using DFS and they have quotas such as: \\SERVER-01\Apps - \\DOMAIN\Data\Apps and the quota for this share is working as it should. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! Jonathan Worth.

We have a DFS share replicated over two servers, just recently we have noticed that folders in which Word or Excel files are stored are beginning to fill up with TMP files all with random 8-digit names, 3B0EE95E.tmp. These files are present on both servers so do appear to be replicated over, but where are they coming from? Does anyone have any suggestions? They never get deleted, so just build up. My theory is that when an Office file is edited, it creates it's TMP file, which is replicated across to the other server. When Office is closed, the TMP on the original server gets deleted, but then the other server replicates its own one back across. I'm very new to DFS, but does this sound feasible?

Hi All, After a bit of advice, I manage 2 sites connected via 1GB fibre - from our 2500 staff and students only a handful of say 100 bodies actually travel between sites for login access These file servers contain user home areas, network drives and profiles - once consolidated into one server I want them to replicate with each other and serve users on site A for server A, site B for server B - however if server A was to go down users would automatically pull data from the site B server How would I go about doing this? i'm thinking of something along the lines of similar DFS replication that happens with the domain controller - or is there a better more reliable method?

Hello everyone, I have two file servers and I use Roaming Profiles and have redirected Application Data and Desktop to shares on the server. I am looking at using DFS-R so that I can replicate these Roaming Profiles and Redirected Folders between the two servers. I have implemented DFS using an Active/Passive approach whereby clients always use the targets that point to File-Server1 and then should that server be unavailable they point to the file-server2. My question is: How can I increase the speed of failover for DFS, for example should file-server1 be unavailable there is a as little delay as possible for clients switching over to file-server2. (The two file servers are also the domain controllers for the network, with file-server1 holding all of the FSMO roles and both servers being a global catalog.) Is there anyway of using DFS-R to replicate the exchange mailstore databases. I am not bothered about having any fault tolerance regarding the running of exchange itself, but I would like to replicate the mailstore to another server for redundancy. Thanks again! Jonathan.

Hello everyone, Just joined this forum after seeing it's probably the only place on the net with info about CC3 migrations! I've read through several posts on here and they've been helpful but I was hoping someone could give a little further info. I'm currently in the process of migrating a school with a 2003 server (CC3) to Windows 2008 R2 server, and trying to remove the RM software from 30-40 XP machines while joining 60 or so Windows 7 laptops to the Domain. The steps I've taken so far are: 1. Install 2008 R2 on new server 2. Updated Forest Functional Level from 2000 to 2008 3. Join to domain as DC 4. Allowed everything to sync up between the two servers 5. Transferred all FSMO roles to the new server. 6. Transferred DHCP to the new server. I'm now getting ready to completely remove all RM software and the CC3 server from the network, but before I do, could someone shed some light on the following? 1. Do I need to re-create GPO from scratch? (Already done this, just not enabled at the moment) 2. All client computers in the network have an RM login screen, what is the fastest and safest way to remove this? On the none RM side of things, there are a lot of file shares on the 2003 server, along with printers. I was looking into DFS as I would very much like to keep the old 2003 server as a member server incase of trouble with the new 2008 R2 server. How do you go about mapping normal network shares into DFS shares? And with printers, is there an easier way than just installing all the printers on the new server? I'm trying to read my PowerShell V2 book to find ways to script this, but I'm rather new to scripting and I have quite a deadline. Any help anyone could provide would be great. Even the smallest pointers and suggestions might move things along nicely! Thanks very much, Giles.

I have a problem when i try to log on from my pc to AD in the domain. When i boot the pc, and enter username, password and domain to which i want to log on, i need to wait 3-4 minutes, at Applying your personal settings... pop up. Hi Everyone I'm sure I'm missing somehting, but is there a way to list all disabled quoatas on a particular file server, preferably using powershell. I have two file servers replicating usings DFSR and want the quotas to be the same on both. I've managed to get the quotas to copy accross, but I can't seem to find a way of taking the disabled state accross. So i was thinking if I could list the quotas that are diabled on FS1 and use that list to disable them on FS2. ANy help would be great.

Hi all, Since coming back there now seems to be a weird problem with office 2007 apps (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Publisher and Access) Users can open Word documents from network drives, or create a new document, when they press the save button(after successfuly browsing their h:) the dialog box greys and an a (Not responding) message appears on the title. The computer is still usable for other things and if they leave the computer alone, the document is eventually (After 5 mins or more) saved. Not ideal when they all come to save at the end of a lesson. It is only office that is affected, any other program saves without delay. It must of been something that changed over the summer that caused it, but I'm not sure what. File servers are the same (Running 2008 R2), sofware and image are the same... I had a very similar problem when I was setting up a new Windows 7 suite, but this was resolved by setting the Web Client service to automatic. The computers that are affected already have this service automatic and running, and are XP OS. Staff, and administrators do not have this save problem using the same machine that would cause a student a problem. I'm currenty thinking it could be: Network traffic related, but I have no way of measuring how the network is performing, I installed wireshark but its all gibberish to me. Our switches are mainly 3com 4400s Printer related - No printers have changed, but I've seen office do stupid things if it's waiting for a printer to respond. DFS related - Our file shares use DFS Windows Update related Has anyone else had this, and solved it, or can suggest anything else to try?

I have 2 servers - server 1 and server 2 On both servers there is a folder called DFSRoots located on the D drive. In it I have a folder called Templates that houses all the desktop and startmenu icons. This is the structure of what it looks like D:\DFSRoots\Templates\ D:\DFSRoots\Templates\Staff D:\DFSRoots\Templates\Pupils The Templates folder is shared as Templates$. Staff as Staff$ and Pupils as Pupils$. I then wanted to share both the staff and pupils folder so that it can be mapped as this: \\schoolname.local\Staff$ and \\schoolname.local\Pupils$ Unfortunately I am not able to access any of the two folder that way but can this way: \\server1\staff$ and \\server2\staff$ but not with the FQDN. How do I go about doing accessing it by using \\schoolname.local\staff$? I can access it by \\schoolname.local\Templates$\Staff Any ideas?

Hi all, We currently have a network start menu (win2k8r2/Win7) for all users residing on a file server in one of our main shares (accessed by a shortcut, not folder redirection, which I'm happy with). For various reasons I need to move the start menu share to another location, and thought about having it replicate. So my question is, is it worth putting it in my netlogon folder? Or setup DFS? If DFS, can anyone give some guidance as I’ve not set it up before. Thanks, Your thoughts are appreciated.

I'm trying to add a 2019 DC to my existing 2012r2 DCs, they've done the DRFS migration "eliminated" (and are all in the same state, dfs is happy with no errors) and now have sysvol_DRFS as the sysvol share on the 2012r2s When I go to add a new 2019 DC and promote it, it creates a sysvol NOT sysvol_DRFS and DFS will not sync correctly the new server. (dfs has a timeout error with new server, possible error) I've tried with a second (new) DC and I'm getting the same result... (it want to make a sysvol not sysvol_DRFS) what gives? The new server does create a sysvol folder with files in it, so it is syncing... so it is doing something. is sysvol_DRFS only for migrated servers? and it is the share name that is important not the location on a given server? Then why does dfs get upset?

Hi all, I am in the process of developing a user creation script for my colleagues in powershell as our existing VBS script is just too slow. We use Domain based DFS Namespaces and I am trying to get my head around the DFS cmdlets available in Powershell. How can I detect an existing dfs namespace and use the detected path which I will then assign to the User's ProfilePath and HomeDirectory values? I am developing and testing currently on a 2012R2 machine. If I am too vague with my request, let me know!

I have had it suggested that Microsoft DFS on a school network (say one site 500 pupils, 80 staff) is overkill - and could lead to more problems that it solves. Any opinions?
