Hi all, I’m doing a bit of fact-finding and would really appreciate hearing how other schools are managing their staff shared drives. In particular, I’m interested in how you handle structure and permissions. For example: Do you allow staff to create folders at the root of the shared drive, or is that locked down? Do you enforce a standard folder structure (e.g. by department like Science, English, Maths), or let departments/staff organise things themselves? Who typically manages the content and structure within departments – IT, HoDs, or someone else? How are you handling permissions – open access within departments, or more granular (read/write/restricted areas)? Have you found a good balance between keeping things tidy vs giving staff flexibility? I’m reviewing our current setup and trying to decide whether to move towards a more controlled, structured approach or keep things a bit more flexible. Would be great to hear what’s working well for you (and equally anything you’ve tried that didn’t go so well!). Thanks in advance 👍

Hi guys, Been having a lot of issues with our DPM server. Basically i had Microsoft support remote on to take a look at a separate issue. The tech emptied the temp folder which removed the MTA folder. I had no idea this folder was in there until i got back into work from the weekend to see all the tape backups had failed. After a quick Google search i found out this MTA folder is needed during tape backups so re created it and the tape backups ran. Now im getting the following warning. The backup tape job completed, but the catalog was not built correctly for although no data was lost, you must rebuild the catalog to access the data of the backup job (ID 3312) file copy failed due to an I/O error. Source location:\\\MTATempStore$\file.mbc Destination location: C:\program files\microsoft system center 2012 r2\DPM\DPM\Temp\file.mbc The network name cannot be found. Ive looked at the active shares on the server and it turns out the MTATempStore$ share is missing. Does anyone know how i recreate this share and what permissions i need to use, or if this is even the issue, anyone seen this before? -Vicky It Technician Sir Christopher Hatton Academy

Below is an Apple Script I have done up that can be used as a login script to mount a share. You can add multiple shares if you wish to the script. The script will poll for the logged in user/password then mount the share. All you need to replace in the script below is "Server" & Share" the left should be left as is. To test, if you login using an AD user or even an OD user then run the script you will see the share mount. set MyName to do shell script "whoami" tell application "Finder" mount volume "smb://SERVER/SHARE/" & MyName & ";" & MyName & ":password" end tell

Hi I have been trying to disable authentication on a share we have with little success. If you browse using a windows xp client (on domain but local user account) you get the auth prompt. The server hosting the share has "everyone" as permissions for the share and ntfs. The server is 2003 sp2 and I have tried turing the various local policies to allow anonymous access but it still prompts. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi guys and gals, I'm setting up a new Virtual File Server to take over from an aging Physical. At the moment, all the data is on one drive (D:), and (badly) split up into folders/shares etc. At a previous school I've had two VHDs one for Pupils and one for Staff and had Homedrives and Pupil/StaffShares on each. I was wondering what you guys do? Do you have one big VHD (ours would be around 2TB, and carve it up just with folders and use FSRM to set Quotas and rules etc, or would you have separate VHDs, and if so, would you have a separate VHD as above, or go further one for each main share? Approx Sizes Staff Home - 540GB Staff Share - 815GB Pupil Home - 190GB Pupil Share - 280GB

I have recently moved one of the shared area to the new fileserver. I have changed the Group Policy under UC-PREF-WINDOWS SETTINGS-DRIVE MAPS to point to the new server, however, none of the teachers, kids, etc are getting the new drive?! Why would this be and can you give me a few tips? I have recently inherited this and everyone is already using a login.exe logon script to deploy printers. Don't ask- I have no idea how to modify that!! that's for another post I reckon! When I ran robocopy to copy files, was there something else I was supposed to do? thanks for reading.

Greeting everyone! I am hoping someone in this forum may be able to assist with my file sharing setup... How can I get this accompish: FolderA - I have everyone with read only and admins as full control in "Share Permission" under the share tab. This works for me as I do not require users to create folders below this folder. I have sub folders called: -SubFolderA - I would like for all users to be able to create files and folders in SubFolderA -Users - User can only access thier personal folder within this subfolder. I have all the above setup as follows: FolderA - Share permissions ; Admins F\C & everyone R SubFolderA - on the security tab, I have removed all groups and given F/C to admins and Modify to SubFolderA group Users - Admins F/C and users F/C of their own user folder. Issue here is that, users aren't able to create files and folder with this setup unless if I set FolderA share permission to modify for everyone. How can I accomplish this given the above details. Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Hamid

Spent the morning working on both the 'Windows Web Share Client' block (to use it's proper name) and 'LDAPCapture' auth plugin to get them working in Moodle2.0.x LDAPCapture - http://www.minimotoscene.co.uk/marci/ldapcapture_moodle2.zip Windows Web Share Client - http://www.minimotoscene.co.uk/marci/smbwebclient_moodle2.zip Both tested as working on clean install of Moodle 2.0.3, with PHP5.2.17 on FreeBSD8.2-RELEASE Note: I am not the maintainer of either of these, and as such these should be considered unofficial modified versions. Should the author (*waves at Guy*) have any objections to these being posted here, drop me a line and I'll remove them immediately. Also note, I haven't tested these on PHP5.3.x / Moodle 2.1 - if anyone does so, can you let me know the outcome...?

Hello everyone, Just joined this forum after seeing it's probably the only place on the net with info about CC3 migrations! I've read through several posts on here and they've been helpful but I was hoping someone could give a little further info. I'm currently in the process of migrating a school with a 2003 server (CC3) to Windows 2008 R2 server, and trying to remove the RM software from 30-40 XP machines while joining 60 or so Windows 7 laptops to the Domain. The steps I've taken so far are: 1. Install 2008 R2 on new server 2. Updated Forest Functional Level from 2000 to 2008 3. Join to domain as DC 4. Allowed everything to sync up between the two servers 5. Transferred all FSMO roles to the new server. 6. Transferred DHCP to the new server. I'm now getting ready to completely remove all RM software and the CC3 server from the network, but before I do, could someone shed some light on the following? 1. Do I need to re-create GPO from scratch? (Already done this, just not enabled at the moment) 2. All client computers in the network have an RM login screen, what is the fastest and safest way to remove this? On the none RM side of things, there are a lot of file shares on the 2003 server, along with printers. I was looking into DFS as I would very much like to keep the old 2003 server as a member server incase of trouble with the new 2008 R2 server. How do you go about mapping normal network shares into DFS shares? And with printers, is there an easier way than just installing all the printers on the new server? I'm trying to read my PowerShell V2 book to find ways to script this, but I'm rather new to scripting and I have quite a deadline. Any help anyone could provide would be great. Even the smallest pointers and suggestions might move things along nicely! Thanks very much, Giles.

Hi there, We keep having issues with space running low on our server. This of course isn't what I want as an ICT Technician because it causes print issues, file saving issues and too many other issues to issue an issue at... What's the best way to go about upgrading the space? All the Best, Jay xxx

I used Arcserve a good few years ago and had no problems with it, so it seemed an ideal product to replace Backup Exec and we have just purchased Arcserve r12.5 It has installed OK on the backup server, detects the LTO autoloader fine - but refuses to install client agents to remote machines. Although I have applied the hotfix that provides support for 2008 R2, when I attempt to install a remote client agent onto the single R2 file server we brought Arcserve to backup, I get a stubborn message back insisting there are no default shares on the machine in question and arcserve cannot install the client agent as a result. WTF?! Having checked, the default administrative shares (c$ and admin$) do exist in the target machine and are accessibly via explorer from the arcserve box so I cannot understand what the chuff it is winging about. With other server 2008 hosts it is stubbornly refusing to install to because "windows does not allow you to connect to a server using multiple credentials" After spending two days trying to sort to this, including trawling through CA's supposedly "improved" support site and talking to support agents based on the indian sub-continent who have about as good a grasp of english as I have on punjabi, I am feeling very.......... ........frustrated. Has anyone got any suggestions? For fixing Arcserve, not dealing with my frustration (though I suppose deal with one, and the other sorts itself out!) Thanks in advance

It's probably a joke but it does make you wonder exactly how far from the truth it is The 'trader' at the centre of a controversial interview, in which he claimed the City just 'loves' a economic disaster, was today accused of being a hoaxer. Twitter users took to the social networking site to 'out' the City trader as an imposter and claimed he was a member of a group of hoaxers, hours after an astonishing interview on the BBC. Interviewers were left open-mouthed as Alessio Rastani admitted that traders 'don't really care that much' about the prospect of an economic collapse. He astonished BBC viewers yesterday by describing his hopes of profiting from a recession, adding: 'The governments don't rule the world - Goldman Sachs rules the world.' The self-styled 'independent trader' also claimed he had been 'dreaming of this moment for three years', as the global economy faces continuing uncertainty. However sceptics took to Twitter today to claim Mr Rastani was merely impersonating a city trader and was even a member of political hoaxers the Yes Men. One user said: 'It doesn't matter if it was Alessio Rastani or The Yes Men. What he said reflects how traders really think.' In an interview on BBC News, Mr Rastani predicted, 'The market is toast.' But when presenter Martine Croxall asked him what the solution was, he admitted: 'For most traders, we don't really care that much how they're going to fix the economy, how they're going to fix the whole situation. 'Our job is to make money from it.' He added: 'I have a confession - I go to bed every night and I dream of another recession, I dream of another moment like this.' His comments came on a day of turmoil in the stock market, with major indices going up and down throughout the day. Shocked Ms Croxall replied that 'jaws have just collectively dropped' at the trader's comments. 'We appreciate your candour,' she added, 'however, it doesn't help the rest of us, does it?' But Mr Rastani insisted that 'anybody' can profit from a catastrophic crash with the right 'hedging strategies', and drew parallels with the 1930s Depression. He concluded: 'The economic crisis is like a cancer. If you just wait and wait, thinking this is going to go away, just like a cancer it's going to grow and it's going to be too late.' The presenters were almost dumbstruck at the end of the interview, as Ms Croxall's co-host asked her, 'Do you dream about the economy at night?' 'I try not to,' she replied. 'Nightmare.' Mr Rastani's outburst drew a mixed reaction from viewers. His Facebook page was flooded with people asking for investment advice, but not all internet users were so complimentary. One Twitter user described Mr Rastani as 'jaw-droppingly amoral', while trader Jack Gavigan wrote: 'If Alessio Rastani is such a great trader, why does he spend time teaching people instead of, y'know, actually trading?' Mr Rastani's website, LeadingTrader.com, is full of pictures of his speaking engagements, but provides little information about his own trading experience. News | Mail Online... TheSun Website TV viewers were left stunned last night after a self-styled trader claimed bankers were "dreaming of another recession" so they can make more money. BBC 24 newsreaders sat "open-mouthed" in amazement at Alessio Rastani's outburst — but today there were claims the outrageous interviewee was a hoaxer who managed to dupe the news channel. Rastani said traders "don't really care that much" about the prospect of an economic collapse and told of his hopes of profiting from the recession, adding: "The governments don't rule the world - Goldman Sachs rules the world." During the shocking interview, he said: "The market is toast. For most traders, we don't really care that much how they're going to fix the economy, how they're going to fix the whole situation "Our job is to make money from it. "I have a confession - I go to bed every night and I dream of another recession, I dream of another moment like this." But Rastani's credibility came under question today as bloggers claimed he is a member of a group called the Yes Men, who pose as fake interviewees for the media. Doubts about his alleged success as a trader were also raised as it was pointed out on Twitter that he is not currently employed by a bank or fund manager. Rastani described himself as an "experienced stock market and forex trader and professional speaker". His website is dedicated to his public speaking. Quantcast Rastani appeared on the channel as stock markets worldwide were hit by another day of turmoil. A shocked BBC presenter told him "jaws have just collectively dropped" after his scandalous words. She added: "We appreciate your candour, however, it doesn't help the rest of us, does it?" Rastani replied that "anybody" can profit from a recession if they use the correct strategies. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/3839173/Traders-shock-BBC-outburst....

Hi, I'm hoping someone could help me! I'm putting 20 macs on our windows network. I've setup mac server and works fine along with Policy manager. My issue is... I've joined the macs to the domain and they are happily communicating with Policy Manager. When i joined them i did force the home to startup disk as this then let us use some scripts when the unticking didn't. Is there a way of redirecting the documents, music and etc folders on mac to save on the network home drive for the user ? IE when the user saves to documents on the mac it saves it to the My Documents folder windows created ? and not allowing the user save to the mac HDD ? Awebb08

Our macs here used to be set up so users got their AD network home drives mapped when they login in when the path was in the following format in AD; \\fileserver\username$ However to make adding new users easier for ourselves we changed the AD accounts so the home directory path is now as follows; \\fileserver\users$\Students\YearGroup\username This works fine in windows but on the macs it just maps users$ which they don't have permission to so.. Is there an easy way of fixing this? I've written this applescript which ejects the users$ share, queries AD for the current users home directory, converts the \\ into / and maps that as an SMB share. However i'm hoping there's an easier way of doing this that i've missed as i've got to apply this to around 100 macs.. set diskName to "users$" tell application "Finder" if disk diskName exists then eject disk diskName else end if end tell set homedir to (do shell script "dscl /Active\\ Directory/domainname.org.uk -read /Users/$USER SMBHome | grep \\\\\\\\.* -o") set x to SaR(homedir, "\\", "/") on SaR(sourceText, findText, replaceText) set {atid, AppleScript's text item delimiters} to {AppleScript's text item delimiters, findText} set tempText to text items of sourceText set AppleScript's text item delimiters to replaceText set sourceText to tempText as string set AppleScript's text item delimiters to atid return sourceText end SaR set networkhomedir to the result mount volume "smb:" & networkhomedir as text Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Martin
