My Lovely People, I work in a school. We have 13 laptop trolleys all holding 15 laptops each. We have an issue with students pulling keys off the keyboard and damage to the casing of each laptop and the chargers. I've tried to roll out documentation (Spreadsheet with four columns 'Laptop Name', 'Student Name', 'Checked in/out' and 'Damage/Issues') for Teachers and other members of staff to fill out when laptops are handed out but it never gets filled in. Although to me this would be classroom management issue it's fallen on good old IT support to find and roll out a solution. Has anyone implemented anything similar to this and had results?

We are trying to prevent our users from running various commands that we don't specifically approve. We have implemented Applocker, but that doesn't prevent the user from running commands beginning with rundll32.exe or regsrv32.exe. In previous versions of Windows the group policy setting "Remove Run menu from Start Menu" was sufficient. But in Windows 10, when a user starts typing any command in search, even with that GP setting enforced, the command runs. Is there any way to prevent this? It is a significant security issue, and I am surprised that Windows 10, which is generally more secure, in this issue is actually less so. If not, is there at least a way I can prevent access to the search field? I've already found it on the task bar (even if I set it to "hidden", the user can switch it back to "show search icon" or "show search box"), in the alphabetical list of programs (under "Search") and via the Windows+S and Windows+Q hotkeys. I tried renaming the folder C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy That did disable the search function entirely, but it went too far for our needs. It would prevent the users from running their programs from the Start Menu. For example, they couldn't just start typing "Word" and have Microsoft Word open. Any ideas will be welcome. Thanks! David

I have boot from usb media disabled in the bios but it turns out if a pupil uses the old shift+reboot (windows recovery) then they can specify boot from usb . I'm thinking that the windows boot manager is allowing this to happen. (the PC has a UEFI bios) The boot order is windows boot manager then PXE, that is all. (the boot manager places itself in the boot order after a PXE image) Do I have a bugged UEFI or is this expected behaviour of the windows boot manager? EDIT: (the dvd drive was still enabled as a boot device but it is disconnected internally. Maybe a specially crafted usb stick could appear as a cd drive and this would fool the bios?) Am I wrong, I'm putting this together from CCTV footage. Also what would it take to protect the OS on the internal drive? edit2: Elitedesk 800 G1 latest bios

We’re exploring banning USB sticks and although can easily allow these for our exam accounts, I wonder how others handle completed work. Do you have them save it to the account, and move/print it after? Should you allow USBs for exam accounts?

Anybody having any luck with managing Windows Security Security Center? We've got a third part anti virus solution in which does the brunt of the work but we're planning on keeping WDSC on (minus the firewall) in the background as an extra layer and I'm trying to set group policy settings to try hide it or restrict it so students and other users can't much about with the settings but so far I'm getting no where. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? Any suggestions on how to tackle this or other best practises are appreciated

Hi All, Just thought I would drop a quick posting on here to firstly say hello, and secondly explain a little about Exa and why we chose to sponsor the *nix forum. So first things first, "Hello". my name is Mark Cowgill, I am the co-founder and director of Exa. Exa is an Internet Service Provider, that caters primarily to education, and we look after thousands of schools throughout the UK; and secondly to the business market. We do not have a home user division. As an ISP we have been providing our services in to schools for over a decade now, covering everything from connectivity, content filtering, email, hosting and security through to more bespoke solutions. If you are interested in any of the services we offer feel free to PM me any time, if you would like to speak to any of our schools for references or you just have a general question on Exa, again just PM me, or of course you could just ring the office too, we are nice people I promise, and we never hard sell. Okay, enough about that side, so why the *nix forum. For one someone else was already doing the Internet one but being more serious; as well as being an ISP we are a software development house; we develop and run our services primarily on *nix platforms. Our in house systems team and R&D teams have been working on *nix platforms for far longer than any of us care to remember, and we do consider ourselves to be somewhat experienced in this field, and we thought it would be good to share some of that experience and expertise with anyone else interested in developing on, or running *nix platforms. We also have a good track record of developing lots of opensource projects including software such as ExaProxy and ExaBGP. In fact some of the biggest companies in the world including Microsoft and Facebook use our opensource software. So if you have any questions on running *nix servers or developing for the platform(s) pm me or any of my colleagues that you will see on here from time to time and we will do our best to help. Please bear in mind if we don't come back to you immediately it is not that we are ignoring you, it's just we all have the full time job of running and developing for Exa and keeping all our customers happy too! Look forward to chatting with many of you over the years to come.

The staff want to introduce python programming into the school. I was wondering how this can be done safely. My concern is that a pupil will cut and paste malicious code into python make an exe and run it. Also a program that is easy to deploy would be nice

Hi all, I am currently in the process of getting a few quotes for around 40 Avigilon CCTV Cameras for both external and internal areas. We are being quoted to have all 5mp cameras externally (mainly dome cameras) and 2,3 and 5mp cameras internally. The quotes are all quite high (by the time dedicated switches/cabling and NVRs have been added on) I just wanted to know if anyone on here had got Avigilon or had looked at it previously, and your thoughts on it? Or if anyone has a better suggestion of hardware/software to look at then I would definitely take this on board. Many thanks!

Dear all, I don't know if someone could shed some light on this for me or what I am doing wrong, I have a folder structure set up as follows: Top Level e.g. H: Drive THEN Folder e.g. Home Directories THEN Sub Folder(s) e.g. Staff, Students, Parents THEN Sub Folders(s) e.g. various specific accounts under the folders above. How do I set the security permissions so that users can navigate their folders and have Read Write and Modify, but hide the folder structure above and also deny access to them. ** So ideally all users would see is their own folder, and have access only to their own folder. ** Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards.

Hi, I have inherited an older system that has not been maintained for a number of years, and appears to have been hacked around a bit. Three servers running Win 2k3 1=AD plus Exchange plus plus plus plus bits 2=AD plus SMS 3=Terminal Server There are around 75 plus workstations ranging from laptops to desktops and a mixture of student and teacher configurations The login script is using something called kixstart and is full of errors and registry hacks. There is very little in teh way of GPO settings The AD is poorly organised and not making efficient use of OUG's Where do I start? I am no expert, just well informed, so I would need a lot of asssistance. The first thing I want to be able to do is stop students from launching any applications/scripts/batch files from anywhere accept the authorised locations such as C drive etc. How do I do that? Second, I want to re rationalise policies/profiles and login scripts. At the moment each logon creates a profile on teh machine which slowly fills the local machines hard drive and kills it. Would Mandatory Profiles stop this or not? I want to be able to first lock the system down for students and also for some staff who are useless at security to protect the sytsme from hackers and wasteful malicious pranks. Also would like to expand in the future to add student laptops with a variety of OS's and capablities Also would like to know how subnetting could work, as we are only using one domain and if that could have subnets as we are running out of IP address! I appreciate your help in advance Jim

I am trialling Spiceworks at school, but am concerned about security of the information it holds. Potentially it could be storing all device names and IP addresses, usernames and passwords, and other confidential support information that would make a hackers life very easy. Does anyone know if its safe? is anyone else using it it successfully and allowing it to store this kind of information? Cheers

Setting NTFS Permissions on multiple files / folders "Windows Server 2008 R2"
Guest posted a topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
Hi I'm going to go straight to the point, Now I've been aware of this problem for a while but surely there must be a way round it!!! but how I can set file permissions on multiple files / folders at one time. I have got to re organise a few shared folders with different permissions but I don't fancy spending hours on it when I know it can be done within minutes. I know I could do this with Windows server 2003 but since the release of 2008 they removed this. does anyone know how to get the security tab back when you highlight multiple folders or a program that will do the same job?? thanks- 4 replies

We're going be taking on some boarders next year and I'm currently having discussions about the best way to accommodate their IT requirements. I'm keen on BYOD, with a separate VLAN linked to a VDSL line with OpenDNS web-filtering. (This would also server the residential staff quite nicely too). It seems to me though that there are rumblings amongst some of the teaching staff responsible for the boarding house that they'd rather have School-provided IT equipment for the students as "they'll be less likely to get viruses that way, and won't be able to play games". Now... my thoughts are that BYOD would encourage a greater sense of responsibility for the students (surely, part of what is going to turn them into well rounded adults), they'd be able to use their platform of choice for keeping in touch with their family (rather than us having to install every flavour of instant messenger/skypetypething/whatever) and the fact that they can play games is not necessarily a bad thing and I see that as being a pastoral issue rather than anything else. Plus I envisage that the school-provided equipment wouldn't be loved and cherished... ;-) What do other people do? Cheers!

Hi all Today I was asked to go to a group of PCs that had been locked out by the BIOS password being changed from setup to always. All of our PCs have a BIOS password so no pupil should have been able to access the BIOS. Is anyone aware of a back door way into BIOS? Needless to say if they have got the BIOS password there are approx 600 PCs that need to have it changed! I don't want to do that unless forced

I am trying to check that a supplier is Iso certified as they claim to be. Anyone ever done this? I have checked with BSI but the supplier isn't listed with them. I thought there would be a central database of certified suppliers. The supplier concerned isn't on the DfE list sadly. Thanks in advance.
