Hello, Just after some general feelings if VLEs are still a vital part of a successful school? Couldn't you just have something like Home Access Plus so students/staff can access personal files and then a third party application such as SchoolComms for MIS data and reports? I ask because at my current place the VLE has never been actively used. Just a file access system if I am honest even though I invested a great amount of time developing them. Any thoughts? William

Surely there will be an easy simple way........... I came from a Frog school which allowed all staff to login to the VLE and see all the network drives so they could theoretically work from home on all the schools data and access what they required. Is there a way or a product which will allow me to implement this at the school I am now at? I have a VPN connection set up for staff with school laptops but as you can imagine not everyone has those! Thanks in advance!!

Hi everyone, Just had through our renewal for RM Unify with a whopping 50% price increase. Has anyone else seen this outrageous hike, and what alternatives are there? Currently looking like we're over the barrel so to speak. We currently use RM Unify to provision O365 and for SSO/saved password to several key apps. But don't plan to use it to write-back to AD and was considering disconnecting it from O365 in favour of MS's own Sims tool. Thanks Craig

Before I started at this school, back in the days when everyone was rushing to get their VLE up and running, they signed up with one provider who initially ran the VLE, their email and their website. Since then, the website is something they no longer provide and the only thing that sees any use is the email, which doesn't seem great value at £1.5k/yr. Currently using O365 tied to the school's .co.uk domain which, AFAIK is included in our VL agreement. So... we basically want to get rid of the VLE provider and just use O365 for email/calendar/storage etc. The question is how to do this without losing current emails (and preferably calendars/drives)? Would there be extra costs? Would it be better to go "Google" and, if so, how would we transfer emails across? Ideally we'd like to keep the same domain.

Hi All, SLT have asked for student and staff to have their school photo as their profile picture in Office 365. They want it to have a more friendly/VLE feel. I understand their point of view but using student photo does make me feel unconformable from a child protection view. What do people think?

Hi my name is Perry Leigh from a company called INASIA Learning Ltd who support and sell Multimedia Science School (Previously supported by PLATO Learning Ltd and RM). Here is a support note if you are seeing problems when upgrading to the latest version of the Shockwave. Any problems then please contact me directly. Symptoms You may find that upgrading to the latest version of Shockwave (12.0.7.148) causes problems with Network and Standalone versions of Multimedia Science School 11-16. You may get the error “MSS Content Browser has stopped working” with the only option is to close the program. Previous versions of Shockwave before version 12.0.4.144 seem to work without problem (except for the Diffusion and Osmosis module, see separate support note). On-line versions of Multimedia Science School delivered through a VLE/LMS or from the Multimedia Science School portal are unaffected. Cause It seems that the latest version of Shockwave is not compatible with the browser component that is part of the Multimedia Science School application. To fix just install an older version of Shockwave but it is recommended that Version 10 is installed because this version is able to coexist with the latest version. Using this version will allow Multimedia Media Science School to work but also keep compatibility with other Shockwave content you may have. Fix To fix this problem quite simply install the version of Shockwave (Version 10) that is on the Multimedia Science School installation CD, (\supportfiles\installers\shockwave) or download from here.: www.multimediascienceschool.com/shockwave/Shockwave_Installer_Full_101.exe When the install completes you may get the error “Windows cannot find C:/Users/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/Applicationm/chrome.exe” Please ignore this message and click OK twice to close. You will find that once this older version of Shockwave is installed that Multimedia Science School will start working again. Please note that installing the older version of Shockwave does not overwrite the latest version of Shockwave installed already on the computer but is advised that in Google Chrome that you disable the older version. Do this by typing in the browser of Chrome http://chrome://plugins/ then just scroll down until you reach Adobe Shockwave Player - Version: 10.1r11 and then disable. This will unsure that there are no other incompatibilities with other Shockwave content that you may be using. Internet Explorer and Firefox are not affected by the installation of the older version of Shockwave so no need to reconfigure. Alternative Fix As mentioned previously the On-line versions (SCORM) of the software are unaffected by the latest version of Shockwave so you may consider upgrading so that it can run through the School or College LMS or VLE. This has 2 main advantages in that Multimedia Science School is not installed directly onto the network so is easier to manage and also Students can access the software from home. For more details contact Perry Leigh at [email protected] or visit the Multimedia Science School Portal. Kind regards Perry

Another popular frog post We have just paid for it and awaiting the ISA software to turn up to do the final prep before the Design of frog starts. Just wondering what other schools have created so far in Frog? We have a few staff asking about online Detention forms, behavior records (similar to our databases). The beviour record is also used to report CET calls (SMT) which then sends an email to the relevant Key Stage Team. We IT peeps are after creating our Help Centre on there as well, this is currently on sharepoint 3.0 - free Having looked around so far it does all seem possible but just wondering what other places have created so far. If so do you offer them free or cost? Our Frog is going to be heavily used and we do plan on so much being put on there, we understand there may be limitations. I my self have a huge list of stuff I want to go on there and all my spare* time I will be developing Frog. I do have a ton of other things to do though.

Hi I want to remove certain fields from the moodle profile page for example the Optional for im etc etc.

Now I'm not asking anyone to go out of their way and start photoshopping up a full set of logos for me here, because I'm not that cheeky. But... if anyone has a pack of logos that they use for the subjects on their VLE (English, Maths etc.) that are fairly unified in appearance, would you mind awfully posting them up for me to steal? Our VLE working group are demonstrating the VLE to faculties for the first time tonight and I want it to look as SHINY and IMPRESSIVE as possible, and I've not had time to photoshop up some Web 2.0ish icons yet for various reasons, so if someone can save my posterior for me here, I'd be endlessly grateful! As I said - don't go out of your way to make something for my poorly-time-managed self, but if you have something anyway and it will only take you a few minutes to zip them up and post them, then help a brother out!

Hi all, As part of a reward system, I'm looking to (preferably) source or (if needed) purchase some educational games for our students. Specifically I'm looking for KS3, 4 and 5 especially in Numeracy and Literacy. They would need to be fully enclosed within the .SWF file (i.e. no linked dictionaries) as the VLE's Flash embedding capabilities aren't the greatest. Does anyone know where I might be able to find such resources? I've done a few scans on Google but the amount of malware websites returned somewhat frightens me! Thanks in advance,

I am not new to VLEs but have had to work with what I had before. Now I am looking to find the right platform for the way I want to develop platform from the bottom up (learning model first then facilitate it wit the VLE). To meet my requirements I am looking for something that will allow me to do the following: Set a learning task. Host a series of resources needed in satisfying the learning task (learning, practising, researching, building understanding etc) Track which resources have been used and to what extent Receive the completed task with a history of the resources used in order to contextualise the outcome Support communication which allows for "learning manager" communication and peer review Records and facilitates feedback including tagging recommended further study or activities keeps and maintains an achievement profile of the learner which can produce reports based on level of success/achievement helping to identify areas (strengths/weaknesses) Provides a graphical representation of achievement not just lists or marks/grades Works with single or groups of learners Has assignable groups to create learning teams with team tasks and responsibilities (supports diary entries for the group and individuals) Has secure access and keeps a log of use Can be customised in terms of the "desktop" (visual, layout etc) Has an ability to promote a sense of belonging (community) Facilitates needs such as fun, freedom, power (ability to affect own learning) A bit of a list I know hence my difficulty in finding a suitable VLE with which to work. Anyone with any suggestions please help me out. I do not want to adopt a VLE to find I meet a key limitation several months down the line! Kev

Hello My school currently does not have a VLE, we used to use Moodle before I started but there were problems with the installation and unfortunately I've not had the time to start again from scratch with it (which is what I originally planned to do). The server it was hosted on has been reutilised so I wouldn't be able to try to fix the issues. The pressure is on to set up a VLE before September, with my current workload I'm going to struggle to find time and our teachers wouldn't be able to add much content by this deadline. Do you know of any hosted services which come with KS2 and 3 content on them? Particularly for English, Maths and Science. If not is there any good SCORM content available for KS2 and 3? Most of what I can find online is targeted at KS4. Thank you James

Hi all, I have been a long time viewer of this forum and I think it is really good. I was hoping that you lot could help me out with a new project I have been working on. I am in the process of creating a new virtual learning environment application, and would like to know people's views on what to include. I want to know what features you think are essential and which are desirable. Also I would like your view on what current VLEs do badly, or you think could be done better. These views can be generic to the education sector, or personal to your establishment. I am hoping the end result will be a top quality product, which will be set apart from other packages available at present. Taking into account the needs of the most, but also unique things that some may like. I think too many of the VLEs out there seem to be detached from their potential customers and their views, so hopefully we can help change this. Thanks

We are considering replacing Uniservity with either My Learning or It's Learning as our VLE. I have been initially impressed by both products and would be grateful for any opinions from anyone using either. I would be particularly interested in comments on ease of use, CMIS integration, parent portal and reporting tools. Thanks.

Hello, we have recently just setup a new Sharepoint 2010 deployment which seems to working ok (still developing it a bit at the moment!). We have been looking at Sharepoint Learning Kit for some time now and was just wondering how others have got it setup. I have looked at some things online at it says the best way is to have a site per class and then add the appropriate students/staff to that site. Surely there is a lot of administration overhead here. Is there anyway this can be done automatically without having to buy andy additional software. I have read that you can use Excel to provision users to these sites. My main question is how can we setup SLK to work efficiently and without much manual administratrion overhead. Thanks.

Very soon my country will be using Fronter's VLE. Fronter VLE is asking me as a new client to put up a help desk for all stakeholders (administrators, teachers, parents and students). Does anyone have any experiences to share? What should be included? What is required and what are the implications of setting up a help desk? What are the type of most common questions and who can best answer them (technicians, teachers...?)

This summer the secondary school I am a technician at will be switching from Moodle to Frog. I have read up all the post on here, and elsewhere about Frog, but wanted to hear back about some of the problems that others have encountered when switching VLE. I have read that some people had problems with using Frog with IE 9, and haven't found out if such problems have been resolved. Just any notes that anyone has on the set-up/transfer from Moodle or other VLE's, and what work can be expected would be greatly appreciated. Also we have renewed our licence with ClickView, which integrates with Frog as well, any notes on this would also be appreciated. Last of all will Frog be able to integrate with library software, we are currently using autolib library software, again any notes would be appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and thank you very much in advance if you reply.

Bit of a weird one but one of my central/North London independent school clients requires a developer to build a page in firefly that displays results from a SIMS Assessment Manager marksheet, filtered to only show results from pupils that the logged-in user teaches. So would need to know firefly (or be able to develop software or scripts in asp.net and/or sql) In addition to this they need to create online forms that have some fields that are pre-populated from SIMS, specific to the logged on users. In more detail, these are holiday consent forms that they are asking parents to complete, of which we have most of the data already held in SIMS, however the parent must confirm all of these details on the holiday consent form. Is anyone interested in this consultancy work? Not sure on a suitable rate but open to offers
