Hi, I am struggling to find a definitive answer to the issue I am experiencing with Spiceworks. The issue that I am experiencing is that Spiceworks does not seem to be receiving ticket updates sent via email. It receives the tickets fine, and is sending replies, the issue is it just not receiving updates. I feel like I have checked/tried everything... I even tried setting up a separate Google Account, instead of an Office 365 account, but that didn't make any difference. I have tried both imap and Exchange settings, and that didn't change anything either. Am I missing something really obvious? I'm hoping I can get this resolved soon, as I really want to get the helpdesks live at our sites. Many thanks in advance.

Hi I am wanting to start getting staff to use the portals in spiceworks. At the moment when they go to it, it asks them to login with their network details which they do and then they have to enter them again with their email address. Is there a way to stop this? So in school they just go to the page and they are logged in automatically? and at home just enter their username and password once? I have it linked to AD. Thanks

I am trialling Spiceworks at school, but am concerned about security of the information it holds. Potentially it could be storing all device names and IP addresses, usernames and passwords, and other confidential support information that would make a hackers life very easy. Does anyone know if its safe? is anyone else using it it successfully and allowing it to store this kind of information? Cheers

Hi all I have recently had my second attempt at trying to get my head around using spiceworks. I want to hear from you guys, what you find good about it, what you find bad about it, what is useful etcetc There seems to be so many bits and bobs on there to get to grips with, i want to know what you guys/gals think is worth utilising from it. thanks

If Anyone can help me at all, then please set forward Over summer, the secondary school i work for are moving from moodle 1.9 to moodle 2.2.2 we currently use the help desk block to track any issues with our network and VLE i need help with either: 1) re-writing the block to work on moodle 2.2 platform OR 2) writing a new block to intergrate 'Spiceworks' onto the moodle platform if there are any programmers out there that think they can do this then please help

I'm having a problem setting up a new instance of spiceworks, the email settings to be more specific. I have the following settings. Outgoing: SMTP outlook.lancsngfl.ac.uk port:587 (Ticked "Requires authentication") username:email address Password:************* Incoming: IMAP outlook.lancsngfl.ac.uk port:993 SSL username:email address password:************* When i hit save and it runs a test it shows the following error: Error on outgoing settings: Sending email from SMTP server failed: 550 5.7.1 Client does not have permissions to send as this sender Running Version 4.7.52439 BTW I got all the settings from my phone that can send and receive my work emails without problems. Has anyone got a working lancsngfl email spiceworks instance. Need to get a working support desk going again!

Thank You in advance.

I have been tasked with researching/proposing a new solution that includes a help desk, asset management, and the ability to remote support (e.g. VNC) to users on site. We currently have none of these. I'm just looking to get a feel for what sort of solution others may be using (this is for an independent school), and get some feedback on what I'm currently looking at. Help desk For the help desk/ticketing component, I am currently considering: Spiceworks SysAid (On-premise) OSTicket Kayako (Download) Web Help Desk (SolarWinds). Spiceworks is probably my favourite pick right now, simply because it is so easy to use + customise/brand, and generally seems geared specifically for IT. Having a good experience for our end users is very important, and the fact that Spiceworks seems to supports Active Directory SSO for the user portal with very little fuss is great. Dragging and dropping to design the portal, and being able to create custom ticket forms + attributes/fields is also quite nice. As for e-mail queues, this seems to be quite robust as well, and taking a look at the E-mail templates/variables I think some very professional looking notifications could be created. I'm also quite fond of OSTicket, having used it in another project. I'm glad to see the newest versions are getting better. This could be customized to our hearts' content, considering it is open-source. I am a little concerned about the help desk aspects of SysAid and Web Help Desk; the whole category soup that users would click through to identify their problem seems designed to help route a much larger ticket volume than we would anticipating and would likely confuse our end users. One advantage SysAid has is that it integrates the ticketing, asset management, and the remote support into a single product. Kayako is certainly a solid solution for ticketing, although like SysAid and Web Help Desk, if you want to customise the look and feel it seems all you can do is download a pack of HTML + CSS and make your changes to that. Asset Management On the asset management side of things I'm looking at: Parago School Asset Manager Spiceworks SysAid Web Help Desk (SolarWinds). Kayako "Advanced Assets Module" The first two, Parago and School Asset Manager, are not really "IT Focused". These would certainly be very useful to the school as a whole, but probably aren't the best place to start since our project is IT specific, especially considering the pricing structure. We have had on-site demonstrations for both and were particularly impressed with Parago, with the way it organized assets and provided a virtual representation of the school. Spiceworks again seems to handle asset management quite well (I only tested it in inside a virtual environment so far, so haven't inventoried things like switches or printers). I have seen other spiceworks users complain about performance/impact of scanning on the network so I'm a little concerned about how well this would work in production. The tools you get in Spiceworks for assets are a bonus too (WOL, one click-VNC, etc.) I did have a few issues getting SysAid to properly WMI scan and deploy its agent to assets. This seems to have been eventually resolved when I pushed out some firewall exceptions (though I had been trying with the client firewalls disabled at one point). I haven't played too much with Web Help Desk's asset management so far, although I can see it does include a WMI scanner alongside its integration with 3rd party network discovery tools. Remote support Products I've looked at for remote support: VNC (RealVNC Enterprise, UltraVNC, TightVNC) ABTutor Impero SysAid Dameware Mini-Remote Control (SolarWinds) VNC is an obvious choice, although unfortunately the open-source versions are a little flaky with encryption/AD integration which would be nice to have. UltraVNC does have a screen blanking feature however, which not even RealVNC Enterprise fully supports (you would need to toggle the blanking on the server settings and then reconnect for this). I have used ABTutor v6 quite a bit in a past role, and generally found it to be quite a nice solution. I did encounter issues with the mirror driver on Windows 7 however, preventing Aero from working and more importantly breaking some D&T designing software. Hopefully the situation is better in v7. It's also a shame that AB doesn't seem support any form of authentication other than the connection password.. though perhaps we could configure the windows firewall to only allow connections from a management subnet/VLAN etc. It would also be nice if AB supported a command like argument to directly connect & watch a client; this way we could integrate for example Spiceworks using CustomURL to do a one click from ticket/asset to remote support (the best AB can do right now seems to be the -g flag to bring up a specific group). Impero is quite popular and seems to be packed with a lot of features. Unfortunately as some others on the forum have pointed out, it does come with a premium price tag. SysAid does come with a remote support aspect, however it appears to be licensed per channel, and isn't cheap. After getting it working, I discovered that it is merely a customized UltraVNC plus a more limited HTML5 client. Paying £100s more just so we can run more than one UltraVNC session at a time doesn't sound great. The Dameware remote control solution seems nice, including its own enhanced protocol as well as being able to connect to VNC/RDP. --- Bit of a long post I know, but if anyone currently has such a solution, is working on one, or has any experience with any of these products it would be useful to hear from you. Thanks, Karl

Curious how you guys are celebrating SysAdminDay today (assuming you've even heard of it!) Here at Spiceworks, we threw a pizza party for our two IT masters and provided public thanks on the Community site. Share what your companies have been doing. And if it's nothing, you may want to remind the ones in charge that the IT guys hold your online lives in their hands!

Greetings EduGeek forum regulars! My name is Jason Smith and I'm the Online Marketing Manager for Spiceworks. We're honored to be the exclusive sponsors of the EduGeek.net Windows Forum throughout the summer. A little background on Spiceworks: We create network management and help desk software for IT pros and SysAdmins around the world. One advantage Spiceworks has over our competitors is that our software is 100% free - forever! This includes any product upgrades we have (19 software iterations since we launched in January 2006) and phone and online support. Spiceworks remains free thanks to IT sponsors that offer exclusive deals and promotions in non-intrusive advertisements directly in the IT management app. If you currently use Spiceworks or have used us in the past, I'd love to get your feedback on your overall experience. What did you like? What didn't you like? Where could it improve? What functionality would get you to become more reliant on the software? Do you (or would you) recommend Spiceworks to other IT pros you know? If you never used Spiceworks or never heard of us before, I'm open to any and all questions that you may have, either in this thread or via PM. If the question is too technical for me, I'll get you a response from someone on my Development team as soon as possible. Looking forward to hearing from all of you soon. -Jason Smith, Your EduGeek liaison to Spiceworks

Hi all, I have just taken up a role as senior network technician at a high school and, after my first week observing, can see that I will need to bring in some basic administration systems for processes. Top of the list is getting a working helpdesk/ticket system in place - temporarily I have put Spiceworks up (as its free) as teachers can continue to email "IT" and so from their perspective there is no change. However, Spiceworks doesnt split calls into "service requests" and "incidents/problems" from what I can see - does anyone know or are using something that allows this feature, so that calls can be prioritised that way? Thanks in advance!

We have Spiceworks set up internally and awaiting SLT approval but I've run into a problem with the shortcut on Windows 7 which is preventing us releasing it to the staff. -All of our accounts can access the portal by hostname on XP but only some can access it on Windows 7. -All accounts can access it by IP address, but that doesn't seem to work with SSO so isn't an option. -Local admin account can access it. -Domain admin can access it. -One entry in DNS to the correct IP address. -Editing the hosts file doesn't make a difference It works fine using our Pre-Prep login but not using the student login. I did a GP report and checked all options applied by the Pre-Prep GPO but nothing seems applicable. The other difference between these accounts is that the student account loads a mandatory profile from the server whereas the Pre-Prep account loads the local default one and settings are applied by the GPO. The domain admin account also uses the local default profile. Is there something I need to change to get Windows 7 mandatory profiles to be able to resolve intranet names?

We currently use Spiceworks as a Helpdesk Solution and for us it works great - but the school now uses Parago for the Asset tracking (which our IT inventory has to be put in to). Anyway, I've heard on the grapevine that they now have a helpdesk module?? Can anyone confirm this and give any feedback on it?

Hi We were looking to use spiceworks for a helpdesk solution here, unfortunately due to being behind a proxy, we cant set it up through our G-mail, so we need to look into altentives, i know there's probably posts about this, but a nice fresh list of alterntives for me to look into would be ideal. Ideally looking for a free helpdesk in the short term. Thanks

I know it's been covered previously and recently but I wondered if there is anyone out there using helpdesks systems for more than IT. I currently have 6 spiceworks on-premise servers which serve: Maintenance team, Finance, Personnel, IT, Admin and Data Team. These work really well and everyone is used to working with them and sending email requests etc. I cannot think of a way to host multiple systems on a single instance server, even with rules and being a bit creative. It still means an awful lot of emails to everyone who is admins on the help systems. The options seem to be: Cloud Helpdesk version. This is hosted in the US and I am unsure what content might be sent (GDPR risk) by users. Apart from that, it uses their own mail system which I have had issues with before when I hosted one of the finance helpdesks in the cloud. There were mail delays at times which made it difficult to use and be relied upon. No good for our IT helpdesk and it showed to be an issue with the dept who used it. Also meant I had investigate missing emails all the time. I can migrate existing tickets which is good. On-Premise Helpdesk Server: My issue is the new spiceworks Helpdesk Server is chopped down and not as configurable. It's like an on-premise cloud version. Apart from that, I don't really want to maintain 6 servers anymore for obvious reasons. I could migrate current and historic tickets which is a plus. Another helpdesk system: It would need to be able to cope with 6 helpdesk departments. I would need email to ticket function. A portal wouldn't work and that is an obvious solution to number of issues. Anyone use something similar or know anything that might be suitable? Cheers

So I'm faced with quite the tricky scenario regarding a new setup of Spiceworks as a helpdesk (only) in a School environment, it's set up to sync with AD (read only). The first problem is that the school does not keep any e-mail addresses of users in AD, it's all stored via LGFL Mail so they've never had to worry about it. Now, we need Spiceworks to email the Staff with ticket updates and the only way to do this would be to have email addresses added to the Staff Accounts in AD.. The other problem is that Spiceworks is syncing all the student users etc and other accounts we don't want. We only need Staff accounts to be synced. My proposed solution as of yet is: - Grab all email addresses/LGFL usernames from LGFL and then write some scripts or excel formulas to 'generate' the usernames (then quickly check manually that the output is correct) - Use a PowerShell/equivalent script to import emails to AD using username as reference. - Somehow write an LDAP filter to only allow users within a certain group or DN so only Staff users are synced. Does what I'm doing sound correct? is there an easier way to do all of the above? should I throw in the towel and give up?
